But many children don't know what part of the potato is the best for food. Take a knife and cut from the middle of the potato a piece as thin as paper. Hold the piece between your eyes and light. You'll see that the potato has skin,an outside rim and an inside part. The outside rim which is right under the skin of the potato,is the most valuable part of all. But this is often thrown away with the skin. Even the skin itself is better for food than the inside. When eating a cooked potato,if you choose the inside and leave the outside, you are throwing the best part of it. If you can't eat the whole potato, eating the outside rim and leaving the inside will do. 46.How many parts does a potato have?A.It has only one part, the outside rim.B.It has two parts, skin and the outside rim.C.It has three parts, skin,an outside rim and an inside part.D.It has four parts, the middle, skin,an outside rim and an inside part. 47.What is the best part of a potato?A.The outside rim. It is the color of most growing plants, too.Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes,it describes something that is not yet finished or plants that are not ripe. For example,a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, and who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century,a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns had not yet developed. A century or so later,a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in the war (战争).In the eighteenth century,a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.About one hundred years ago,“greenhorn” was a popular expression in the American West. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities in the east. The greenhorn didn't have the skills that he would need to live in the hard, rough country.Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s.A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her plants continue to grow after your plants have died. The Green Revolution (革命) is the name which was given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural (农业的) scientists who had green thumbs.51.According to the passage,a greenhorn means________ now.A.a young cow or ox whose horns have not yet developedB.a soldier who has not had any experience in the warC.a person who is new in a jobD.a man who doesn't have the skills to live in the country52.The meaning of the underlined word “ripe” in the second paragraph is ________.A.未完成的B.成熟的C.青涩的D.老练的53.Which of the following about the Green Revolution is NOT right?A.If there weren't the Green Revolution,we would have no rice to eat.B.The expre ssion “the Green Revolution” appeared several years ago.C.Because of the Green Revolution,we have more kinds of rice and other grains.D.Agricultural scientists with green thumbs started the Green Revolution. 54.We can know from the passage that ________.A.all growing plants are greenB.green is the most important color in natureC.a person with a green thumb can make plants grow wellD.the expression “a green thumb” has a history of two hundred years 55.The main idea of the passage is ________.A.a greenhorn B.a green thumbC.the Green Revolution D.the word “green” and its story八、任务型阅读(每小题2分,共10分)(词数:约290;建议用时:9分钟) Cyril Dick's house is neither a modern house nor a house of the future. It is 40 years old. There are more houses like that in the south of France. They are called “bubble houses”,and you can see why!Cyril Dick is a designer and he loves round things. He collects old records and clocks. He also collects round furniture. And now he has a completely round house.Everything in the “bubble house” is round. The centre of the house is one very big bubble. This is both the living room and dining room. There are round armchairs,a round table, and a big round rug (地毯) in front of a round fireplace. Around the living room are three small bubbles. One bubble is a kitchen with round shelves, another bubble is the garden room, and the third bubble is a music room. Upstairs there are two more bubbles—a bedroom and a bathroom. The doors and windows are also round,of course. The windows are like eyes. There aren't any curtains (窗帘) in the house, because Cyril likes to see the garden all the time.Bubble houses are the idea of a Hungarian architect (建筑师), Antti Lovag.“A lot of modern houses are bad for us,especially tall buildings of flats,” saysLovag.“Because round homes are more natural, people feel happy in them.” Cyril agrees with this.“Some people think my house is funny,” he says,“but for me,this is the perfect home.”56题判断正误(“T”表示正确,“F”表示错误);57题完成句子;58题简略回答问题;59题找出并写下第三段的主题句;60题将文中画线句子译成汉语56.You can f ind more “bubble houses” in the south of France.()57.Cyril Dick is a designer and he loves _________________________.58.What is the third bubble around the living room?____________________________________________________________ 59._______________________________________________________________60.______________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________九、词语运用(每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容及所给提示,补全文中单词或用所给单词的正确形式填空Every Tree Planting Day,we all go to plant trees in the park near our school. The Society named after him was founded in the late 1800s by conservationists concerned with the decline of birds, which were being killed so their feathers could be used in the manufacture of women’s hats.Sponsored by the National Audubon Society, more than 40,000 volunteers will be outside counting birds from today until January 3rd. V olunteers from all 50 states of the United States, every Canadian province, parts of Central and South America, Bermuda, the West Indies and Pacific islands have begun to count and record every individual bird and bird species observed during the two and one half week period of the count.Jeffrey leBarron is the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count editor. He says the count is the longest-running bird census in ornithology. This year, according to MR. LeBaron, more than 1,600 separate bird counts have been scheduled. Some would have as few as 10 people taking part, others with hundreds. The logistics of the Christmas bird count, he adds, are simple.“Each individual count is in a circle. It’s a 15 mile diameter circle, um, around the exact center point. And it’s always the exactly same area that’s done every year, usually, even on the same weekend during the count period. And what the ideal would be, which is virtually impossible, is this census: every single individual bird within that circle on the count day.”Mr. LeBaron says experienced bird counters can get a good idea of the total bird populations within the count circle based on the number of birds they actually see. The editor points out, however, that the counts are not only for experienced birdwatchers.“Anybody that is interested or concerned can become involved. Beginners will go out in a party with experienced individuals who know both the area and the birds in the area, in the field where more eyes and ears are better. And then anybody can point out a bird, and someone in the field will always be able to identify the bird.”Part III. Dolphin captivityA. 1 3 4 5 2B. Thesis Statement 1: Dolphins should be kept in captivityThesis Statement 2: there are educational benefits of keeping marine mammals in captivityCRick Troud: stress / sonar bouncing offDeborah Duffield: little difference in average age of death; life getting better for captive dolphinsRick Troud: natural behavior patterns are altered/ beating each other to death; suffering from fractured skulls, ribs or jaws.Doborah Duffield: Can’t learn from animals in the wild how they operate, breed, what they need, etc.(Alan Tu is an announcer for Colorado Public Radio; Peter Jones is a reporter for Colorado Public Radio. The other speakers are identified in the report.)A: A planned aquatic park in Denver is raising the ire of animal rights activists who object to aproposal to include a captive dolphin display. Although officials for Colorado’s Ocean Journeys say they have yet to make a final decision on the issue, local and national activists have already instigated a “NO Dolphins in Denver” campaign . As Colorado Publ ic Radio’s Peter Jones reports, the battle lineshave been clearly drawn.P: Rick Troud, a former navy dolphin trainer based in Florida, is taking an active role in the “NO Dolphins” campaign.R: Average age in the wild ranges anywhere in some of the studies between 30 and 40 years of age. In captivity, you can expect a dolphin to live maybe 5.13 year and every 7 years in captivity, the dolphin population is dead.P: According to Troud, there are many reasons why dolphins can’t live full lives in captivity.R: if you take a look at where the real dolphin is in the real ocean, you find the dolphin who swims 40 miles a day, is very family-oriented. These animals are separated from their mothers; that’s a stress. You put them is a concrete tank where their sona r bounces off of walls, they can’t swim in the same amount of time and direction that they can in the wild.P: Environmentalist and ocean explorer, Jean Michel Cousteau:J: there are some animals which reject captivity right away, and they’re very suicidal. I’ve had one of those in my own arms for many days. The next morning when I came to take care of him, he was dead. And what he’d done was to swim as fast as he could from one end of the pool on…to the other side and destroyed his head by hitting the wall. They have a very sophisticated brain. I don’t think we have any rights to play with the live of these animals.P: Cousteau’s anti-captivity position is challenged by Dr. Deborah Duffield, a biology professor at Portland State College in Oregon. Her 1990 study compared captive dolphins to the wild population of Sarasota Bay, Florida. Among other findings, the study showed little if any difference in the average age of death. And Duffield says life is generally getting better for captive dolphins.D: the ce nsus data say that every time I do a census, I’ve got older and older animals in it as well as this normal age distribution that we’ve been looking at . So my feeling is that the trend in captivity has been that the group of animals that we’re following ar e getting older, and if they continue to do that over the next five years, they will then indeed be older than the wild population.P: There is also a debate over the educational benefits of keeping marine mammals in captivity. According to Duffield, captive dolphins play an important role in our basic understanding of the animals.D: I firmly believe that we cannot learn anything about organisms that we share this world with if we do not understand how they live in an environment, and what they do, and that watching them go by in the wild will not do it. I cannot tell what an animal needs, unless I know how it operates, how it breeds, what it needs metabolically, and I can’t learn that from animals in the wild.P: But Troud says the dolphin displays are anti-educational because the animals’ natural behavior patterns are altered by captivity.R: IN the wild, you don’t have dolphins who beat each other to death. There are no dolphins that I’ve ever seen stranded on the beach, who are suffering from fractured skull, fractured ribs or fractured jaws, as is the case in captivity.P: the Ocean Journey board will take all factors into consideration before making a final decision on whether to include dolphins in the park. For Colorado Public Radio, I’mPeter Jones.Part IV. Birds—a source of wealthA.I. 9,300II. Habitat A. warmer climates/ 300 different species/ B. colder climatesIII. A. 2. habitat alteration B. esthetic valueIV. Birds’ populationMr. Lebaron says there are about 9,300 different known species of birds. Larger numbers of them live in the warmer climates. For example, more than 300 different species have been counted in Panama, while far fewer species are native to colder climates. Aside from their esthetic value, Mr. LeBaron says birds are important to the environment because they can signal changes in it. “Birds are one of the best indicators that we have of the quality of the environment within the given area. Whether it is a relatively local area, or even primarily on the worldwide bases, they are one of the first things to be altered. They are quite sensitive to a habitat alteration or to other threats. And often times when birds are disappearing out of the area, it just means there is a degradation of the quality of the habitat within that area which will adversely affect everything in there including humans”national Audubon society editor Jeffrey Lebaron calls the world’s bird populations a source of wealth that humans must protect.“people get so much pleasure out of looking at birds and listening to birds. And if they start disappearing just the quality of lie, may be not physically, but the mental quality of life can be degraded quickly.”Jeffrey leBaron says that while the National AudubonSociety’s annual Christmas bird counts show a declin e in some species, many types of birds are actually increasing their populations.Part V Do you know…?1.one and one-half million / 20 times2.100/ 40,000/ 65 million3.3,500/ 2 million square miles/ 3%4.200 animal species/ 1,0005. a third/ two thirds/ three quarters/。

现代大学英语听力2听力原文及题目答案Unit

《现代大学英语听力2》听力原文及题目答案Unit 2Unit 2Task 1【答案】1) b 2) a 3) d【原文】Texas was the biggest state before Alaska became the forty-ninth state in 1959. One good way to understand the size of Texas is to learn about its weather. Different parts of the state have very different kinds of weather.Laredo is one of the hottest cities in the United States in summer. The best time to visit Laredo is in winter, when it is pleasantly warm.Amarillo gets very cold in winter. Sometimes there is more snow in Amarillo than in New York, which is a northern city. Summers are better, but sometimes it gets quite hot. The best time to visit Amarillo is in the autumn when it is cool.If anyone asks you about the weather in Texas, ask him, “What part of Texas do you mean?”Task 2【答案】A.1)T 2) F 3) FB.1) d 2) c 3) cC.climate, reputation, extraordinary, unreliable, dry, wet, clear, dull, hot, cold, bad, mild【原文】Our friend, Nick, whose English gets better and better, declared solemnly the other day that he thought that the British climate was wonderful, but the British weather was terrible. He went on to explain by pointing out that the British climate was a temperate one. This meant, he said, "that you could always be certain that the weather would never be extreme —at any rate not for any length of time —never very hot and never very cold." He quite rightly pointed out that the rainfall in Britain, according to the statistics, was not very heavy. "Why then," he asked, "has the British climate such a bad reputation?" He answered by saying it was because of the extraordinary, unreliable weather. There was no part of the year at which you could be certain that the weather would be dry or wet, clear or dull, hot or cold. A bad day in July could be as cold as a mild day in January. Indeed you could feel cold at almost any time of the year. Nick blamed drafty British houses for this, but agreed you could also blame the small amount of sunshine and a great amount of dampness. He advised every student coming to Britain to bring an umbrella and to understand the meaning of that splendid word "drizzle".Task 3【答案】I.the country; Trees, grass, lakes and steamsII.A.1. concrete, iron, steel2. take in the heat during the day and throw off heat into the air at nightB. Warmer winters, car engines; electrical applianceⅢ.A. air pollution may stop sunlight from reaching the earthB.1. Ice near the North and South poles to melt2. to be slowly flooded and people living in these cities to move to higher land 【原文】Cities change the climate around you. In the country, there are trees, grass, lakes, and streams. In hot weather, the trees and grass cool the area around them. Lakes and rivers also cool the area around them. But cities are not cooled in these natural ways. Cities are built of asphalt, concrete, iron, andsteel. There are few trees and usually not much grass. Rain falls onto the streets and into the sewers. When the summer sun shines, streets and buildings take in the heat; after the sun sets, the streets and buildings throw off heat into the street. Once the sun sets, the countryside cools off, but a city may stay hot all night.Cities are hotter than the countryside in winter, too. Standing near a car with its motor running, winter or summer, you will feel the heat thrown off by the engine. The heat comes from the gasoline burned by the engine. This heat warms the air and the ground around the car. Thousands of running cars are almost like thousands of small fires burning.Carefully put your hand near a light bulb or television set. As you can see, electricity creates a lot of heat. This heat from electricity warms the house and the outside air.The heat given off by cities can affect the climate. Some experts even believe that cities can change the climate of the whole world. They think that air pollution may stop sunlight from reaching the earth. If less sunshine reaches the earth, the earth may become cooler.Still other experts think the world will get warmer. If the world did get warmer, great changes would occur. Ice near the North and South poles would melt. This would make the oceans rise. Cities near oceans — like Los Angeles, Boston, and Miami —would slowly be flooded. People living in these cities would have to move to higher land.Task 4【答案】A.1) b 2) cB. night, delight; morning, warning; gray, way, red, headC.1) F 2) T 3) F【原文】A red sky at either dusk or dawn is one of the spectacular and beautiful weather predictors we have in nature. By closely observing this phenomenon, you can achieve short-range accuracy of the weather as good as, or better than your local weatherman. In the Bible, Jesus in Matthew 16, 2-3 is quoted as saying, “When it is evening, it will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning it will be foul weather today: for the sky is red” when speaking to the Pharisees. An old English weather proverb based on this passage is:Red sky at night, sailors delight.Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.OrEvening red and morning gray,Sends the traveler on his way.Evening gray, morning red,Brings the rain down on his head.At dusk, a red sky indicates that dry weather is on the way. This is due to the sun shining through dust particles being pushed ahead of a high pressure system bringing in dry air. A red sky in the morning is due to the sun again shining through dust. In this case however, the dust is being pushed on by an approaching low reassure system bringing in moisture. Don't confuse a red sky in the morning with a red sun in the morning. If the sun itself is red and the sky is a normal color, the day will be fair.Task 5【答案】1) c 2) b 3) d 4) c 5) c【原文】Mark: I am an avid fly fisherman and frequently find myself on the river in a raft during lightning storms. We always have a debate at thesetimes on where we are safest —pulling into shore or staying on thewater. Since I have heard one is safe in a car when lightning strikesI wonder if the raft floating on the water is insulated, and thereforethe safest place to be.Meteorologist A: We spoke with some scientists about your question, and they all agreed that under no circumstances should you remain on the waterduring a lightning storm. If your raft is made of rubber, you mightfeel that you're .well insulated, but don't kid yourself. Typicallightning flashes travel 10 to 15 kilometers and can deliver as muchas 100,000 amps of current. In comparison, a toaster uses about 10amps of current. If lightning strikes the water near you, it willhave no trouble traveling through a few extra centimeters of rubber. Meteorologist B: So, if you're on the water and a thunderstorm approaches, get to the shore and seek shelter on land. Try a building or car. If neitheris available, look for a cave, cliff, wall, or a group of trees. Nevertake shelter under an isolated tree-it's also a good target forlightning.Task 6【答案】A.1) F 2) T 3) F 4) T 5) F 6) TB.Incredible, one minute, one kilometer, destroyed, lifted up, carried away, killed, injured【原文】Every spring and summer many inland areas are hit by tornados. A tornado is a kind of storm. It's a revolving, funnel-shaped column of air that moves through the sky at very high speeds. A tornado looks like a huge, black ice cream cone whirling through the sky. The speed of a tornado is very fast-it is believed to be between 200 and 700 kilometers per hour.Tornados form under very special weather conditions, and these special weather conditions occur most often in inland areas, such as the central United States. A tornado forms when a layer of warm, dry air is on top of a layer of cooler, moist air. This combination of dry, warm air above wet, cool air creates a condition that causes the lower layer of air to lift up. As the lower air rises, both layers of air begin to rotate, to turn around and around. The air begins to rotate faster and faster because of centrifugal force. The tornado has a center called an “eye” and the air rotates quickly around this eye.As the air begins to rotate faster and faster, the tornado cloud begins to grow downward; that is, it begins to form a funnel or cone, and this cone goes down toward the ground. The cone of air is dark because it develops from a dark rain cloud. As the cloud gets longer, as the cloud gets closer to the ground, it begins to pull up dirt from the ground. Then the funnel ofrotating air becomes very dark because of the dirt in it. As the tornado funnel gets longer, it begins to drag along the ground. When the tornado touches the ground, it does incredible damage. It usually touches the ground for only about one minute, and it usually travels along the ground for only about one kilometer, but during that one minute, buildings are destroyed, trees are lifted up out of the ground, small objects are carried away, and sometimes people are injured or killed.Task 7【答案】A.1) b 2) a 3) bB.1) It has been nice weather during the day, but it is going to change at night.2) Fine weather in southern Europe and not so nice in northern EuropeFor todaySoutheast England---26 degrees Celsius by mid-afternoonSouthern Scotland---Maximum temperatures of around 21 degreesBrighton---15 hours of lovely sunshineMidlands---23 degrees Celsius by early afternoonNorthwest of Scotland---Light showers around middayFor the weekendSpain---34 degrees CelsiusGreece---32 degrees CelsiusFrance---Cloudy with rain, maximum temperatures of 22 degreesNorthern Ireland---Heavy rain, 17 degrees CelsiusMost of England---Cloudy but mainly dry with sunny periods, 23 degrees Celsius 【原文】Radio Announcer: You’re listening to Radio Metro. It’s two minutes to nine, and time for the latest weather for cast from Dan Francis at the London Weather Centre. Francis: Hello. It's been another warm and fine day for most of us. Temperatures in southeast England reached 26 degrees Celsius by mid-afternoon, and Brighton had 15 hours of lovely sunshine. Further north it was a little cooler with maximum temperatures of around 21 degrees in southern Scotland, and in the far northwest of Scotland there were some light showers around midday. But the rest of the country, as I said, has been warm and dry with temperatures in the Midlands reaching 23 degrees Celsius by early afternoon though it was a little cooler along the west coast and in Northern Ireland. But already the weather is beginning to change, I'm afraid, and during the night showers will slowly move in from the Atlantic to reach south-west England and the southern coast of Wales by early morning. The rest of the country will have a very mild, dry night with minimum temperatures no lower than 15 degrees in the south, a little cooler — 11degrees or so —in the north. Any remaining showers in northwest Scotland will pass quickly to leave a mild, dry night there too.And now the outlook for Friday and the weekend. Well, southern Europe will, once again, get the best of the weekend weather, and if your holiday starts this weekend, then southern Spain is the place to go, with temperatures of 34 degrees along the Mediterranean coast. At the eastern end of the Med, too, you can expect uninterrupted sunshine and temperatures of up to 32 degrees Celsius in Greece and southeast Italy, but further north the weather's not so settled. Much of France, Belgium and the Netherlands will be cloudy with occasional rain, and maximum temperatures will be around 22 degrees — very disappointing for this time of the year.Scotland and Northern Ireland will have heavy rain for much of the weekend and temperatures will drop to a cool 17 degrees. Across most of England the weather will be cloudy but mainly dry with sunny periods. And when the sun does come out, temperatures could rise to a maximum of 23 degrees.Task 8【答案】【原文】As the air pressure around you either rises or falls, many changes in nature occur. Most of these are very obvious changes while others are of a more subtle nature.Mountains and other far away objects will appear to be much closer and more sharply focused as wet weather approaches and the air pressure drops. The dust particles in the air begin to settle to the ground and the air clears, allowing you to see more details of faraway objects. As a high pressure front approaches and the air becomes “thicker,” more dust particles become suspended in air and things take on their normal somewhat hazy appearance.“Sharp horns on the moon threaten bad weather.” This and a bright, clear moon are good indicators that wet weather is on the way. As the air clears of dust particles ahead of a low pressure system, the moon appears to come closer and be more sharply focused due to the lack of dust.Sound also becomes sharper and more focused prior to stormy weather. Instead of traveling upward and outward into the atmosphere sound waves are bent back to the earth and their range extended. Bird calls sound sharper, and, at my house, we can hear the blowing of the train horn as it rumbles through the valley below. If you find yourself out in a marsh or swamp and the air really seems to stink more than normal, expect rainy weather. This happens when the pressure drops and the methane trapped on the bottom of the swamp is released in greater quantities. In reverse, as fair weather approaches and the pressure rises, things won't smell quite so strong.Birds and bats have a tendency to fly much lower to the ground right before a rain due to the “thinning” of the air. They prefer to fly where the air is the most dense and they can get greater lift with their wings. With high pressure and dry air, the atmosphere becomes denser and they can easily fly at higher altitudes.Smoke rising straight into the air means fair weather and smoke hanging low meansrain is on the way. This is pretty much the same as with the birds and methane in the swamp. When high pressure approaches, smoke will rise whereas with low pressure it can't rise and tends to lay low.Remember a grandparent talking about how their corns, bunions, or joints ached right before a rain? Again, this is due to the decreasing atmospheric pressure allowing the gas in our bodies to expand.Task 9【答案】A. Statements 3, 6, 7 are true.B.f—c—a—d—b—eC.1) F 2) T 3) F 4) FD.1) d 2) b【原文】It was 1974. Richard Nixon was still president. Kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst was still missing. In Xenia, a pretty spot of 25,000 people amid fields of soybeans and corn, American Graffiti was held over at the Cinema. The Xenia Hotel offered a chicken and dumpling dinner for $, but everyone flocked to the A&W drive-in for burgers and root beer floats. That's where five of the bodies were found after the storm. In all, 33 people died in Xenia's tornado, the deadliest of 148 storms that raged through 13 states during the infamous "Super Outbreak'' of tornadoes April 3 to 4, 1974. In 16 hours and 10 minutes, 330 people were killed and nearly 5,550 were injured from Illinois to Georgia.Though the Xenia death toll has been matched by other killer storms, the degree of devastation makes the city's tornado among U.S. history's most destructive. The storm still is studied in colleges by aspiring meteorologists, a textbook case of a rare Category F-5, the most intense of tornadoes. On that fateful day, I was a young boy of 8 years old. We lived in the Arrowhead Subdivision. That afternoon I was around the corner playing with some neighbor kids.I thought I could hear my father calling me, so I ran back to the house. Thinking back now, there is no way I would have been able to hear him. I was too far away for a voice to have traveled in the afternoon noise. Besides, Dad had a very bad case of tonsillitis that day. Like I was saying, I went back home and got through the door just in time to answer the ringing phone. On the other end of the phone was my Mother. Mom was working. She told me she heard a bad storm was on the way. She told me to make sure the garage door was shut and to stay inside. After I hung up the phone, I settled down to watch The Dennis Show. To this day I can vividly remember the electricity going out. I looked out the large window in the living room and didn't have a clue as to what I was looking at.Dad was asleep on the couch, so I woke him up to look. Dad looked and said to get into the bathroom. We sat on the floor. Dad had his back to the door and hisfeet pushing against the wall opposite the door. I remember that as soon as we sat down, the windows broke. Glass blew under the door, and the sound was tremendous.I know it really didn’t take too long for the tornado to go past, but I do remember the conversation we had in the process. I could feel the cool air rushing under the floor through the crawlspace vents. I asked if we were flying. He said he wasn't sure, but he didn't think we were. He said the house was tearing apart. I asked him how he knew. He said he just knew it was. When things calmed down, we opened the door. The odd feeling I had, looking up the street from inside what once was my hallway, is still with me today.I think back often to that day. I think back and wonder what would have happened if my Dad hadn't been sick that day. Like a lot of kids, I stayed home by myself after school back then. I seriously doubt I would be able to tell you my story, if I had been alone that day. I still live in Xenia and wouldn’t trade this town for any other.Task 10【原文】Undoubtedly, Tibet is one of the harshest places for human existence. It is cool in summer but freezing cold in winter. In Lhasa, the mildest city temperature may exceed 29C in summer while plummeting to -16C in winter! Sun radiation is extremely strong in Tibet. The sunlight in Lhasa is so intense that the city is called Sunlight City. The thin air can neither block off nor retain heat so that the temperature extremes can be met in daytime and the same night respectively in Tibet. However it is not impossible to visit the holy snow land. April to October is the best time to visit Tibet, out of the coldest months, which are from December to February usually. The average temperature in north Tibet is subzero and winter arrives in October until the following May or June. July and August are the best time to visit the area, enjoying warm temperature, intense sunshine, beautiful scenery and festive events. May, June and September is the tourist season in east Tibet. In winter, roads are all blocked by heavy snow. Landslides and rock falls frequently occur, which will make travel difficult.。

The ability to catch the exact num bers spoken in English is an important but difficult skill for a Chinese learner. A good way is to pra ctice over and over again the pronunciation of the numbers, particularly the different ways to say thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, etc. It also helps to practice writing down the numbers yo u hear quickly in numerical forms, without translating them into Chinese. You're going to hear a p assage about Michael Jordan, a retired American professional basketball player.Listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the missing numbers.Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. He was born on Feb.17, 1963, in Broo klyn, New York. He is 1.98 meters tall and weighs 216 pounds. Jordan joined the Chicago Bulls tea m for the 1984 season. In the 1986 season he shot 3041 points, the third highest score ever. He w as named NBA Slam Dunk Champion(扣篮冠军)in 1987 and won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1988, an honor repeated four times in the next ten years to 1998. Jordan guided his team to win six NBA championships during the 1990s, s coring 45 points during the sixth and last game of the 1998 NBA finals. In 1999, he was named th e greatest North American athlete of the 20th century. Jordan left the NBA at the beginning of th e 1993-1994 NBAseason to pursue a career in baseball. M: I knew the names of all the football players and the dates of all the games in my high schooldays. But recently I have failed to keep up with football. W: Now you are busy with your golf gam es.Q: What do you know about the man from the conversation?Unit 2 Food and Drinks Part AListening StrategyListening "Between the Lines"People do not always say directly what they mean. Very often, we have to listen "between the lin es". The English language offers many ways for people to imply, rather than directly state, their m eaning. To find out what a speaker really means, we can rely on such things as the context, the m eaning of an idiom, and the intonation used. For example, if someone says "I have an essay to wri te" in answer to an invitation to go somewhere, we can infer from the context that he cannot acc ept the invitation. And if someone says "Andrew passed with flying colors" in reply to an inquiry a bout how Andrew did on a test, we can infer from the meaning of the idiom "to pass with flying c olors" that Andrew did very well on the test. Often, intonation also helps to reveal the real meani ng of a message. For example, "He is very clever" said with an ironic tone means just the opposite . You are going to hear eight short conversations between two speakers.Listen carefully and write down "Yes" or "No" to each of the following questions. 1. M: Have you ever been to that big restaurant opposite the school gate? W: Yes, many times.Whenever my friends come to visit me, I'll take them there to eat. 2. W: Is there something wron g, sir?M: My wife and I have been kept waiting for nearly an hour for our meal. 3. W: Where is the cake I made this morning?M: We ate it, mom. Can you make another one for us?4. W: I hear you like chicken very much.M: Next to beef.5. M: Have you tried this wine before?W: No, never. It's my first time, but it's really to my taste. 6. W: John, do you want a soda? M: Sod a? I think it tastes like medicine. 7. W: Why, the fish is left almost untouched. M: Well, it would be good if it were less salty. 8. M: Hi, Sue, would you like to eat out tonight?W: Oh, I'd really like to, but my sister may come to visit me this evening..[ti:Unit 2 Part B] Listening Tasks A ConversationWhat About Dining Out?Exercise 1Listen to the conversation and complete the following sentences. Do you have any particular place in mind?Peter: Well, I think I'd like to eat something that's not too heavy. I've been eating a little too much lately.Kate: Me too.Peter: I love Italian food, but maybe we should skip that this time. They always seem to serve somuch food in Italian restaurants, and you end up eating morethan you wanted to.Kate: Chinese food would be good.Peter: Yes, or maybe some Japanese sushi. What will they order?Unit 3 Weather Part AListening StrategyListening for Important DetailsBesides understanding the main idea of a listening text, we often find it necessary to grasp the im portant details as well. What counts as important details depends on the kind of information we want. Generally speaking, if we are listening to the narration of an event, we need to sharpen our ears not only for what happened, but also when and where, how and why it happened. In listeni ng to a weather report, on the other hand, the important details we should watch out for are the current weather conditions, temperature, and weather outlook. You're going to hear two short p assages about weather. While listening, pay attention to such details as the weather conditions, t emperature, weather outlook, damage caused by bad weather and so on, and write them down i n note form. Then complete the exercises in your book.1. The weather today: a fine day is in store nearly everywhere, with the best of the sunshine in so uthern and central areas of Britain. A pleasant day, then, with long sunny periods developing. Th ere will be light winds with a maximum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, 64 degrees Fahrenheit . Look at the outlook for the next few days: it will become mostly cloudy with heavyshowers mov ing in from the west.2. A storm in Changchun, capital of Northeast China's Jilin Province, claimed four lives on Sunday. The storm lasted about three hours from around 8 p.m. The winds reached speeds of over a hund red miles an hour, causing serious damage and a widespread power failure.[ti:Unit 3 Part B] Listening Tasks A ConversationDid You Hear the Forecast?Exercise 1Listen to the conversation and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. Alan: Oh, look at the sky, Michelle! It's starting to get cloudy.Michelle: I see it. I hope it doesn't rain. I thought it was going to be a fine day today.Alan: That's certainly what the department was hoping for when they chose today as the date for the annual picnic.Michelle: You can't have a picnic without good weather. You need sunshine for all the eating and games and entertainment.Alan: Yeah, sunshine — but not too much! Do you remember last year?Michelle: I sure do. It was so hot all we did was look for shade, look for ways to escape from the s un.Alan: And no one wanted to participate in any of the planned activities. All we wanted was cold d rinks. And then we dozed off.Michelle: If there had just been the tiniest breeze to cool us off.Alan: But there wasn't. Just that burning sun, without a cloud in the sky, and the temperature just seemed to climb higher and higher.Michelle: Well, we don't have that problem this year, apparently.Alan, did you hear the weather forecast? Is it supposed to rain?Alan: I don't know. I didn't catch the weather report. But maybe if it rains, it will only be a short s hower which cools things off a little. That might not be bad. Questions1. What are Alan and Michelle mainly doing?2. What do you know about Alan?3. What can you infer from the conversation?Speaking TasksListen to the following conversations and repeat after the recording. Then role-play them with yo ur partner. Conversation 1A: What lovely weather we're having! Nice and cool. B: Yeah, I really like this kind of weather. A: What's the temperature today?B: The high is 26 and the low is 20. The weather forecast says the good weather is likely to last, to o.A: I hope so.Conversation 2A: It seems to be clearing up. All the dark clouds are gone and the sun is coming out. B: Yes. Let's j ust hope it stays this way.I hate rainy days.A: I think it will continue to be fine for the next few days. Anyhow, that's what the weatherman sa ys.B: That's great. Let's go for a walk, shall we? A: All right.Conversation 3A: It's hot and humid, isn't it? I can hardly breathe. B: Yeah. I feel suffocating too.A: Are summers always this hot here? It's almost like in the desert. B: Yes, especially in July and A ugust. A: Well, what did theweatherman say? B: He said another heat wave is on the way. A: Oh no! I hope not.B: How about going out to the beach to cool off?A: Good idea. Maybe it's the only place for this sort of weather. Now make similar conversations according to the given situations. Listen carefully and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.1. W: It's been freezing for the last few days.M: Yes. And the forecast says there will be more snow next week, accompanied by strong winds. Q: What will the weather be like next week?2. M: We haven't had such a severe winter for a long time, have we? W: No, and the forecast saysit's going to get worse before it warms up. Q: What can we learn from the conversation?3. W: What if it rains hard? What are we going to do?M: I think it will clear up soon. But if it keeps raining, the whole thing will have to be cancelled. Q: What can we learn from the conversation?4. M: How was the weather when you left New York?W: It was very much like the weather in Beijing. You don't have to take a lot of clothes. Q: What c an we learn from the conversation?5. W: If it is this hot tomorrow, we may have to give up the idea of playing tennis in the afternoon . M: The weather forecastsays it will cloud over by noon. Q: What does the man mean?Unit 4 Music Part AListening StrategyListening for Signal WordsThe ability to identify signal words can help us follow the thread of the speaker's thought. People often use signal words or phrases like "but", "therefore" and "as a result" to add a comment that contrasts with what has just been said or to signal what they are about to say is the result or caus e of their previous remarks. Similarly, words and phrases like "for example", "most importantly", " first", "second", "finally" and "then" usually signal that the speaker is going to provide an illustrati on or emphasize a certain point or discuss several aspects of a certain topic. So we should pay att ention to signal words in listening as they will prepare us for what is going to be said. You're going to hear four short passages.Listen carefully and write down the signal word(s) in each passage. Then choose a, b, c or d to ind icate the function of the signal word(s) used in each of the passages.1. Most people like music. In fact, we are surrounded by it. It's on the radio and television and ca n be heard in stores and restaurants. However, not everyone likes the same kind of music.2. The manager of the music shop was called Brian Epstein. Because so many people had asked fo r a record by the Sun, Epstein decided to go and listen to the group himself.3. Firstly I would like to talk about classical music and its representative composers, then I will mo ve on to jazz music, and finally I will focus on pop music in the last century.4. We listen to exciting music and our hearts beat faster, our blood pressure rises, and our blood f lows more quickly. In short,we're stimulated.[ti:Unit 4 Part B] Listening Tasks A PassageBackground MusicExercise 1Listen to the passage. As you listen, read the signal words in your book and put a tick () in the bra ckets after the ones you have heard. Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the USA. V ery soon it spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music. To begin with, background music was intended simply to create a soothing atmosphere. Recently, however, it's becoming a big business. An American marketing expert has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third. But it has to be the light music. Lively music has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 34%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spo t items they would like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. The expert found that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sale s. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play faster music to keep the customers moving —unless, of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints. Questions1. Where was recorded background music first used?2. What was the original purpose of backgr ound music?3. What kind of music can have a powerful effect oncustomers in shops?4. Why doesn't the same kind of music work in restaurants according to the passage? Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the following conversations and repeat after the recording. Then role-play them with yo ur partner. Conversation 1A: Do you like English songs? B: I'm crazy about them.A: What's your favorite song?B: It's hard to say. There are so many beautiful songs. A: Who's your favorite singer then?B: Sarah Brightman, undoubtedly. I do admire her, you know.I love all her songs. A: I like her, too, but not that much. Conversation 2A: Do you care for opera?B: Yes, I do, very much.A: Which do you like better, opera or musical?B: Opera.A: Do you just listen to it or go to performances?B: I prefer going to a performance. It has everything, color and spectacle and great music. A: Why don't we go and see Aida together? It's being performed at the Grand Theater. B: I've seen it alre ady. It's excellent.A: Oh, lucky you! Conversation 3A: Do you enjoy listening to music?B: Yes, very much. I enjoy listening to music more than any other pastime.A: What's your favorite music?B: It depends. When I am in a good mood, I'd prefer something exciting, with a fast rhythm. But if I feel low, I can onlylisten to something soft and quiet. A: Mm, me too.Now make similar conversations. Use the structures and expressions above where appropriate. Y our conversations should include the following points.[ti:Unit 4 Part C] Test Your ListeningListen to the passage three times and supply the missing information.Celine Dion is the youngest of 14 children in a working-class family in Quebec, Canada. Her pare nts, who both loved music, encouraged her to develop her musical talent. At 12, Celine had comp osed the song "It Was Only a Dream". Her mother and brother helped her to make a recording of that song and sent it off to an address they found on an album of a popular French singer. The ad dress was that of Rene Angelil, who became her first conquest, but there would be millions more. Celine's rise from a teenage singer to a pop superstar has been steady, but not without difficultie s. Record companies were at first less enthusiastic about investing in a teenager than Angelil, wh o mortgaged his own home to pay for her first album. But her first two albums won a great succe ss. And by 1983 she became the first Canadian ever to have a gold record inFrance. In 1990, Celine made her first English language record with Unison but her real breakthrough in America came when she was selected by Disney to sing the theme song of Beauty and the Beast. The song went to No.1 on the chart and won both a Grammy and an Academy award. In 19 96 she performed at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and in 1997 she r ecorded the theme song for Titanic, and her name became synonymous with the enormously suc cessful film. Celine Dion's favorite theme islove. She sings the depth and the power of love in a gr eat many of her hits such as "Love Can Move Mountains", "Because You Loved Me", "The Power of Love" and, of course, the theme song of Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On".Unit 5 Health Part AListening StrategyIdentifying the Relationship Between the Speakers in a ConversationIdentifying the relationship between the speakers in a conversation is an important skill in liste ning comprehension. Although sometimes the conversation itself does not contain words that sa y exactly what the relationship is, we can rely on contextual clues to find it out. Such clues includ e the degree of intimacy (e.g., how intimately the speakers address each other, what endearment s are used), the degree of politeness (strangers tend to be more polite towards each other than fr iends or family members), and the particular situation (at a doctor's consulting room, at a shop, e tc.).Listen to the following conversations and choose the right answers to the questions that follow the conversations.1. M: What's the trouble?W: I feel dizzy and my whole body aches. M: How long have you been sick? W: Two or three days now.M: How's your appetite?W: I've got no appetite. The sight of food simply turns my stomach. What's wrong with me? M: Y ou seem to be generally run-down.Q: What is the mnost probable relationship between the two speakers? 2. W: What's the matter, Jack? You look pale. M: Oh, Ifeel terrible.W: Why? What's the matter?M: I have a splitting headache and a sore throat. W: Why didn't you tell me?M: I thought they might go away, but I feel worse this morning. I'm aching all over.W: Hmm. You feel warm, too. You must have got a fever. There's a pretty bad flu going around, yo u know.Q: What's the most probable relationship between the two speakers?[ti:Unit 5 Part B]Listening TasksA ConversationGoing to See the DoctorExercise 1Listen to the conversation and choose the right answers to complete the statements. D: So what's your trouble?P: Well, doctor, I haven't been feeling well lately. My biggest problem is that I'm having trouble sl eeping.D: Have you tried any of the sleeping medications available? P: I've tried one or two, but they don 't seem to help. D: How long have you had this problem?P: Three or four months — it's been rather a long time now.D: Are you suffering from an unusual level of stress in your life lately? P: Not more than usual. My biggest worry is the fact I can't sleep. D: Well, some people don't need as much sleep as others. P: But I feel tired all day, so it is a problem for me. D: Have you been experiencing any other symp toms? P: I've also had a lot of indigestion lately.D: Well, you are a little overweight, aren't you?P: Yes. And I've gained about seven kilograms this past year.D: You really should try to lose at least that extra weight. Do you get much exercise? P: No, not ve ry much.D: Physical activity is very important.P: So what do you recommend, doctor?D: I will give you some medications for your insomnia and your indigestion. But I also recommend that you begin a regular exercise program.P: But I have neither the time nor the money to go to a gym.D: You don't need to go to a gym. A simple walking program would be very beneficial for you. I thi nk you'll find that diet and exercise will be very helpful in taking care of your recent complaints. Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the following conversations and repeat after the recording. Then role-play them with yo ur partner. Everyone knows you shouldn’t overwork yourself when you start exercising.W thanks for the concern. But tell Ma and Pa that I’ll be fine with what I’m doing.Understanding a passageIt is very important to exercise. Many studies have shown that regular activity and exercise can improve overall health substantially. Exercisereduces the risk of heart disease by up to 35%, stroke by about 28%, certain cancers by 20% and more, and high blood pressure by an amazing 52%. Exercise can also help you to build healthy bones and muscles. Athletes must do physical training on a regular basis to increase their level of performance. Exercising includes walking, running, biking and plenty of other activities as well. My advice would be to pick something you enjoy doing and wouldn’t mind pursuing on a regular basis. Then, you must stick to a schedule. Y ou can even pick a few different activities to mix things up and keep it interesting. Also, always stretch before physical activity! This is very important as you do not want to pull muscles. Most importantly, to keep a healthy body you must stay ACTIVE!Understanding a radio programHere at this Chicago High School and others, there has been so much emphasis on the quality of school menus, but this new study says that none of that really matters when fast food is just a short walk away. How can a cafeteria ever hope to compete with this? A new Harvard study says more and more schools now have to. Eighty percent of schools in Chicago with a fast food restaurant less than half a mile away, raising concerns about how easy it is for kids to eat poorly, and whether fast food companies are moving into the neighborhood on purpose.“they take into account the demographics of neighborhoods, the roadways in neighborhoods, and where the access is to the consumer base.”Doctor Bryn Austin is the study’s lead author and says on a typical day, nearly a third of American kids eat fast food. When they do, they consume more fat and calories, fewer vegetables and fruits than on days when they don’t.Overall, nearly nine million children in the US are overweight or obese, more than one in every seven kids, a number that has tripled since 1980. McDonald’s criticized the Chicago study, saying most restaurants are in heavily trafficked areas. Schools said their spokesmen have nothing to do with it. But child health advocates like Doctor Matte Longjohn say the study shows how recent attempts to improve school menus, even remove soda vending machines, may not be enough to improve children’s eating habits.Listening and speakingPeople talk endlessly about the benefits of exercise. And when they aren’t talking about it, they’re reading about it in health magazines, watching programs about it on television, or listening to recordings about it. People can become so concerned about exercise that they begin to goinsane with worry. It is easy to understand why people attach great importance to exercise. Exercise can not only improve your health, but also enhance your mood and reduce depression and anxiety. People who do regular exercise often achieve an overall sense of well-being.But this concern about exercise has gone too far. Some people are so obsessed with exercise that they give little time and attention to other aspects of their personal lives. I know a guy who spent all his spare time in the gym. Finally, he found himself estranged from his family. What’s more, if you do it in the wrong way, exercise can actually harm your body. Some people work out hard and pull their muscles; some even hurt a joint or break a bone.。

This meant, he said, "that you could always be certain that the weather would never be extreme — at any rate not for any length of time — never very hot and never very cold." He quite rightly pointed out that the rainfall in Britain, according to the statistics, was not very heavy. Ice near the North and South poles to melt2. to be slowly flooded and people living in these cities to move to higher land【原文】Cities change the climate around you. In the country, there are trees, grass, lakes, and streams. In hot weather, the trees and grass cool the area around them. Lakes and rivers also cool the area around them. But cities are not cooled in these natural ways. Cities are built of asphalt, concrete, iron, and steel. Cities near oceans — like Los Angeles, Boston, and Miami — would slowly be flooded. We always have a debate at these times on where weare safest — pulling into shore or staying on the water. Since I have heard oneis safe in a car when lightning strikes I wonder if the raft floating on the wateris insulated, and therefore the safest place to be.Meteorologist A: We spoke with some scientists about your question, and they all agreed that under no circumstances should you remain on the water during a lightningstorm. If your raft is made of rubber, you might feel that you're .well insulated, but don't kid yourself. Typical lightning flashes travel 10 to 15 kilometers andcan deliver as much as 100,000 amps of current. In comparison, a toaster usesabout 10 amps of current. If lightning strikes the water near you, it will have notrouble traveling through a few extra centimeters of rubber.Meteorologist B: So, if you're on the water and a thunderstorm approaches, get to the shore and seek shelter on land. Try a building or car. If neither is available, look for a cave, cliff, wall, or a group of trees. Never take shelter under an isolated tree-it's also agood target for lightning.Task 6【答案】A.1) F 2) T 3) F 4) T 5) F 6) TB.Incredible, one minute, one kilometer, destroyed, lifted up, carried away, killed, injured【原文】Every spring and summer many inland areas are hit by tornados. Then the funnel of rotating air becomes very dark because of the dirt in it. As the tornado funnel gets longer, it begins to drag along the ground. When the tornado touches the ground, it does incredible damage. It usually touches the ground for only about one minute, and it usually travels along the ground for only about one kilometer, but during that one minute, buildings are destroyed, trees are lifted up out of the ground, small objects are carried away, and sometimes people are injured or killed.Task 7【答案】A.1) b 2) a 3) bB.1) It has been nice weather during the day, but it is going to change at night.2) Fine weather in southern Europe and not so nice in northern EuropeFor todaySoutheast England---26 degrees Celsius by mid-afternoonSouthern Scotland---Maximum temperatures of around 21 degreesBrighton---15 hours of lovely sunshineMidlands---23 degrees Celsius by early afternoonNorthwest of Scotland---Light showers around middayFor the weekendSpain---34 degrees CelsiusGreece---32 degrees CelsiusFrance---Cloudy with rain, maximum temperatures of 22 degreesNorthern Ireland---Heavy rain, 17 degrees CelsiusMost of England---Cloudy but mainly dry with sunny periods, 23 degrees Celsius【原文】Radio Announcer: You’re listening to Radio Metro. It’s two minutes to nine, and time for the latest weather for cast from Dan Francis at the London Weather Centre.Francis: Hello. But the rest of the country, as I said, has been warm and dry with temperatures in theMidlands reaching 23 degrees Celsius by early afternoon though it was a little cooler along the west coast and in Northern Ireland. But already the weather is beginning to change, I'm afraid, and during the night showers will slowly move in from the Atlantic to reach south-west England and the southern coast of Wales by early morning. The rest of the country will have a very mild, dry night with minimum temperatures no lower than 15 degrees in the south, a little cooler — 11degrees or so — in the north. And when the sun does come out, temperatures could rise to a maximum of 23 degrees.Task 8【原文】As the air pressure around you either rises or falls, many changes in nature occur. As the air clears of dust particles ahead of a low pressuresystem, the moon appears to come closer and be more sharply focused due to the lack of dust.Sound also becomes sharper and more focused prior to stormy weather. With high pressure and dry air, the atmosphere becomes denser and they can easily fly at higher altitudes.Smoke rising straight into the air means fair weather and smoke hanging low means rain is on the way. The Xenia Hotel offered a chicken and dumpling dinner for $2.25, but everyone flocked to the A&W drive-in for burgers and root beer floats. That afternoon I was around the corner playing with some neighbor kids. I thought I could hear my father calling me, so I ran back to the house. Thinking back now, there is no way I would havebeen able to hear him. Dad had his back to the door and his feet pushing against the wall opposite the door. I remember that as soon as we sat down, the windows broke. Glass blew under the door, and the sound was tremendous. I know it really didn’t take too long for the tornado to go past, but I do remember the conversation we had in the process.

Let‟s TalkThe Origin of the Song “Happy Birthday to Y ou”The story of the song “Happy Birthday to Y ou” Began as a sweet one, but later became bitter. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at a kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, wrote a song together for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister‟s knowledge in the area of kindergarten education, …Good Morning to All” was sure to be a success. The sister published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten” in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Colu mbia University‟s Teachers College, a gentleman by the name Robert Coleman published the song, without the sisters‟ permission. He added a second part, which is the familiar “Happy Birthday to Y ou”. Mr. Coleman‟s addition of the second part made the song popular and, finally, the sisters” original first part disappeared. “Happy Birthday to Y ou” had altogether replaced the sisters‟ original song “Good Morning to All”. In 1916 Patty took legal action against Mr. Coleman. In court, she succeeded in proving that hey were the real owners of the song. 1. 2. 3. 4. teacher at a kindergarten Good Morning to All Happy Birthday to Y ou Happy Birthday to Y ouGood Morning to AllPossible Retelling for the Teacher‟s ReferenceThe story of “Happy Birthday to Y ou” was a nice, sweet on eat the very beginning, but later turned into a bitter one. In 1896, Thaddeus Cahill Filed a patent on the instrument for transmitting music electronically, and until 1914 he sent music signals down telephone lines with this instrument. And he wasn‟t even the first. Elisha Gray transmitted music over a telephone line in 1876, which was the same year the telephone was invented. Gray invented the first electronic music instrument in 1874, calling it the “Musical Telegraph”. Alexander Graham Bell also designed an experimental “Electric Harp” for speech to be transmitted over a telephone line using technology similar to Gray‟s. Bell was a speech teacher for the deaf. The girl shares that view because of the writing on the wall in blood.Task 2: A Great ActorThere was once a great actor who could no longer remember his lines. After several years of searching, he finally found a theater that was willing to give him a t ry. The director said, “This is the most important part, and it has only one line. At the opening you walk onto stage carrying a rose. Y ou hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, smell it deeply and then say the line on praise of the ros e: …Ah, the sweet smell of my love.‟” The actor was excited. All day long before the play he practiced his line over and over again. Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, looked at the audience, and with great emotion said the line, “Ah, the sweet smell of my love.” The audience exploded in laughter. Only the director was furious! “Ahhhhhh! Y ou damned fool!” he cried. “Y ou‟ve ruined my play! Y ou‟ve ruined me!” The actor was puzzled, “What happened? These are movies I saw this year I would like to recommend: Among comedies I highly recommend “Monsoon Wedding”. It‟s an Indian movie. The story is about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching on love and a past rape. This movie shows some of the wonderful customs of India, and the importance of f amily and love. It‟s great! Among dramas, I like “Adaptation”. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too fast to follow.I hope to see it again on DVD with captions. “The Pianist” is set in the Second World War. It‟s about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives in Warsaw with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe, but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a powerful movie with thought-provoking themes. “Rabbit-Proof Fence” is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it‟s based on real events. It is about three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special centers. There the girls are taught practical skills, and the government tries to integrate them into white Australian society. They can away from the camp and walked 1,500 miles to find their mothers. Thank you very much indeed for inviting me. A: No problem.Model 2 What did you think about the movie?John: So… what did you think about the movie? Laura: Well… I think this Star Wars episode is an excellent piece of work, but not as good as the previous ones. John: Really? But I think this Star Wars episode was incredible! Laura: Why do you think so? John: Well, one of the most spectacular things about it was the special effects. State-of-the-art special effects were the main reason for the s uccess of the previous episodes. Laura: Y ou‟re right. The special effects were amazing! And I like the fact that they created so many fantastic settings and other-worldly costumes, weapons and creatures. Now Y our Turn SAMPLE DIALOGA: What did you think ab out The Lion King? Why do you think so? A: Well, it‟s so i nteresting that the lives of the lions were similar to the lives of human beings. B: Y ou‟re right. The murder in The Lion King was almost the same as the murder in the Shakespearean play Hamlet.Model 3 The plot is first-class.John: It‟s kind of cool that they still used the same Star Wars theme song for this movie. Laura: Y eah! It just reminds me of the previous Star Wars scenes. John: I know exactly what you mean! Hearing that song makes me think of the past. Laura: I think the plot was first-class. But I don‟t think the character development was that strong. John: Do you think that has anything to do withthe casting of the movie? Laura: No, the casting was great; the actors are excellent, but I think the acting was a little weak. They just didn‟t have a lot of funny or meaningful lines. John: Well, maybe, but I liked the little kid that played “Skywalker”. I can‟t imagine anyone else - 10 - playing that part. Laura: Y eah, I liked him too. A: Yes, the characterization was rather weak. Do you think it is because of the casting of the movie? B: No, the cast was strong. But the acting was rather poor. And the lines are not interesting at all. A: Well, maybe. But I liked the heroine of the movie. She is excellent. B: Yeah, I liked her too. She‟s adorable!V. Let‟s TalkAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock was a British director. His movies frequently show innocent people caught up in situations beyond their control or even understanding. Hitchcock preferred the use of suspense in his movies. In surprise, the director provides the viewer with frightening things. In suspense, the director tells or shows things to the audience which the characters in the movie do not know, and then skillfully builds up tension around what will happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock had a great sense of humor. Once at a French airport, a suspicious customs official looked at Hitchcock‟s passport, which was marked simply PRODUCER. The curious official asked, “And what do you produce?” “Gooseflesh.” replied Hitchcock. Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in his movies: He was sometimes getting on a bus, or crossing a street, pr walking in front of a store, or across the courtyard in an apartment. However, for the movie Lifeboat in 1944, he was faced with a difficult problem. The entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. Originally, he wanted to float by as a dead body, but he was afraid he‟d sink! His clever solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper that one of the characters read during the course of the movie.1. A2.C3.DVI. A: I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and the idea for Harry just fell into my head. At that point it was essentially the idea for a body who didn‟t know he was a wizard. Q: Did you always plan to write Harry‟s story in more than one book? If so, how many? A: I always conceived it as a seven-book series because Idecided that it would take seven years, from age eleven to seventeen, inclusive, to train as a wizard, and each of the books would deal with one year of Harry‟s life at the school. Q: Any clues about the next book? A: I don‟t w ant to i\give anything away, but I tell you that the books are getting darker. Harry‟s going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Sorry if they get too scary! Q: Of the many things you must have heard people say about Harry Potter, what are some of your favorites? A: My very favorite was from a twelve-year-old Scottish girl who came to hear me read at the Edinburgh book festival. At the end of the festival, the queue for signing was very long. When the girl finally reached me, she said, “I didn‟t W ANT there to be so many people here, because this is MY books!” That is exactly how I feel about my favorite books. Interviewer: What about you, Richard? Richard: Just the opposite. It‟s more comfortable to sit at home. Interviewer: There‟re many different movie genres, for example, science fiction, action, comedy, romance. What‟s your personal favorite? Robert: My favorite would be action movies. Richard: And mine would be nice movies that touch me deeply. Interviewer: How do you like the old black and white movies of the forties, and fifties compared with the modern blockbusters? When you get to the part where I‟m expected to promise to …love, respect and obey her,‟ …giving up all others,‟ and …be true to her forever,‟ I‟d be happy if you‟d just leave that part out.” He gave the minister the cash and walked away with a light h eart. The wedding day arrived, and the bride and groom reached that part of the ceremony where they would make vows to each other. When it was time for the groom‟s vows, the minister looked the young man in the eye and said, “Will you promise to kneel befo re her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life and make a vow before God and your lovely wife that you will never even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?” The groom was shocked, but in spi te of himself, he said in a low voice, “Y es, I will.” Then the groom whispered to the minister, “I thought we had a deal.” The minister put the $100 into his hand and whispered back, “She made me a much better offer.”1.F2.F3.T4.T5.FTask 3: Long Distance FriendshipsAmerican weddings are not always the same. I‟d like to show you pictures of my wedding. When we got engaged, an announcement was published in the newspaper. The announcement typically includes the names of the bride, the bridegroom and their parents and the wedding is expected to be held. About a month before the wedding, we sent out wedding invitations to relatives and friends. This is the church where we had the wedding. My father gave me to my future husband. Then the minister started the wedding ceremony. He greeted the guests, and talked about the meaning of marriage. Next, we exchanged vows and gave each other rings. This is the main part of the wedding. After the vows, the minister prayed for us. Then the minister declared us husband and wife, and we kissed each other. Here is my sister, who was a bridesmaid. This is the bouquet I carried. Traditionally, the unmarried women gather after the wedding, and the bride throws her bouquet to them. The one who catches it will, according to tradition, be the next one to get。

Both thepassage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you heara question, you must choose the best answer from the four choicesmarked A), B), C) and D).Passage OneThe gestures are used to emphasize an idea or emotion, especially while speaking. Gestures are of great help as people are in a lack of words while trying to express their thoughts, emotions and feelings. While one is talking, he or she considers every sentence and word. Before one says some words, he thinks them over in order not to hurt someone or say something wrong. The vocabulary of a person is rather broad and contains millions of words that help us to express anything we want. According to the scientists, the average person uses about thirteen thousand of words in his everyday communication. One may say that thirteen thousand is a rather big number, but consider the fact that the average dictionary of a certain language contains about 600,000 words. That means we don't use even a half of the words in our language. So, it is common that sometimes we are in a lack of words to express something. As it happens, we start to express our feelings through different gestures. Gestures are the reflection of inner feelings we have but not able to express or try to hide. So, the gestures are a silent language. During our entire life we are wearing masks that help us to hide the feelings and thoughts. But, no matter what a skilful liar a person is, no one is able to control his gestures.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.will help people _____ to express theirthoughts and feelings.&A.who cannot speak a foreign language B.who are not well educatedC.who are not good speakersD.who are in a lack of wordsone says some words, _____.A.one makes sure they won't hurt people B.one tries to use the simplest words C.one makes sure that the grammar is correct D.one uses gestures to tell what is to be saidaverage, how many words does one use in his daily communication《A.13,000.B.16,000.C30,000.D.60,000.are the reflections of _____.A.spoken languageB.daily problemsC.our moodsD.hidden feelingscan't be controlled no matter how skillful one is .A.Manners.B.Behaviors.C.Gestures.D.Pronunciations.Passage TwoIt may be a question whether work is a cause of happiness. Thereis certainly much work which is troublesome, and too much workis always very painful. But I think that even the most boringwork is less painful to most people than no work at all. Thereare different kinds of work, according to the nature of the workand the abilities of the worker. Most of the work that mostpeople have to do is not in itself interesting, but even suchwork has certain great advantages. To begin with, it fills theday without the need of deciding what one shall do. Most people, when they are left free to fill their own time, are at a lossto think of anything pleasant to be worth doing. And whateverthey decide on, they are troubled by the feeling that somethingelse would have been more pleasant. What's more, always havingto make a choice is very troublesome. For many common people,it is better to be told what to do at each hour of the day. Most of the rich people who have no work to do suffer a kindof boredom. At times they may find relief by hunting in Africa,or by flying round the world, but the number of such experiencesis limited. So the clever rich people work as hard as if theywere poor to kill the bad feelings.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.most people, the most boring work is _____than no work at all.A.more painfulB.no more painful%C.as painful asD.less painfulis TRUE about most work that most people do A.They are not very interesting.B.They cause unhappiness.C.They are troublesome.D.They are exciting.most people, when they are free to fill their own time, they will probably _________.A.not know what is worth doingB.know how to kill the time*C.fill their time wellD.get lost in the streetshas certain advantages because _____.
