Maintaining a Sharp EyeTeaching steps:1) Information Related to the Reading PassageLikes and dislikes with regard to food vary greatly from culture to culture. What is disgusting to one person can be a delicacy to another. Sometimes we need to change our eating habits. If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit and vegetables may not be available to us. As a result, we have to eat what is different from the food we are used to. Slowly, this strange food may become familiar to us. Our tastes may change, too, and we begin to enjoy eating the food that used to seem unusual to us.2) Read the passage in different ways. This adjective usually follows the noun or noun phrase it modifies. If ordered is the ellipsis of if they are ordered.Example: She asked me not to say anything until asked.2) Technically, one could order a dinner that would cost the price advertised by thegovernment , but if he did so, he would have 2 soups , one cheap fish and no dessert. Analysis: Technically here means according to the exact details of the rules and that-clause is a relative clause modifying a dinner, and advertised by the government is a past participle phrase modifying the price. If he did so can be paraphrased as if the tourist ordered a dinner at the price advertised by the government.Example: He is a man lived by us all.3) He had , as I suspected he might have , ordered the partridge,…Analysis: as is a conjunction introducing an adverbial clause of manner. At a Restaurant
What Would You Like?
Doug and Joanna are in a restaurant. They are looking over their menus.
J = Joanna, D = Doug, W = Waiter
J: Do you know what you're going to order?
D: I can't decide. Everything looks so good.
J: I've had the pasta stuffed with cheese and spinach before. It was great.
(The waiter approaches their table.)
W: Are you ready to order?
J: We're having trouble choosing. What would you recommend?
W: Are you looking for something filling or do you want a lighter meal?
J: I don't want anything too heavy, so nothing fried for me. Also, I don't eat red meat.
W: This evening's special is a wonderful fish that is steamed with ginger and lemon. It's served with lemon rice and a garden salad.
J: That sounds delicious, and fish is so healthy. I'll go with that.
D: Can you tell me a little about your steak?
W: We choose only the best cuts of beef. They're rubbed with sea salt and some pepper and grilled over an open flame.
D: I'll take the steak and a baked potato, then. Oh, and can I get a side order of the sauteed mushrooms?
W: Certainly, sir. And how would you like your steak cooked?
D: Medium-rare, please.
