My name is Jamie and I'm going to tell you about some really cool inventions that people made by looking at the natural world around us. Nature is amazing and full of incredible designs that have inspired lots of human inventions over the years. Let me give you some examples!One of my favorite nature-inspired inventions is velcro. Have you ever seen those prickly burrs that get stuck to your clothes or a dog's fur when you go hiking? In the 1940s, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral took a close look at these burrs under a microscope after they got stuck to his pants and his dog's fur on a hike. He noticed that the burrs had thousands of tiny hooks that caught onto the loops in the fabric. This gave him the idea for velcro - one side has stiff hooks, while the other has soft loops, and when you press them together, they stick! Velcro is used all over the place, from shoes to jackets to wallets. All thanks to studying those pesky burrs.Another awesome nature-inspired invention is the bullet train. The bullet train is a super-fast railway that can travel over 200 miles per hour! But do you know what gave engineers theidea? Birds! When engineers were first designing thesehigh-speed trains back in the 1960s, they ran into an issue. Whenever the trains would come out of a tunnel, they would make a loud "boom" sound from the built-up air pressure. This "tunnel boom" effect caused a lot of noise pollution and scared animals nearby. Then one engineer realized that certain birds like the kingfisher don't make loud noises when diving into water to catch fish from the air. Upon closer study, they discovered that the kingfisher's beak is perfectly streamlined to part the water with minimal disturbance. Using that bird's sleek design as a model, the engineers reshaped the front of the bullet trains to be more aerodynamic like the kingfisher's beak. This minimized the loud "tunnel boom" effect, making the trains much quieter.How about airplanes? You may have noticed that airplane wings are curved on top but flat on the bottom. This design was inspired by observing bird wings. The curvature on top creates an area of low pressure, which helps generate lift and keeps the plane in the air. Many birds' wings work the same way. Airplanes also have a sleek, streamlined shape to reduce air drag, just like birds and fish that can slip through the air and water easily. Even the first airplane designs by the Wright brothers took heavy inspiration from studying birds and how they fly. Nature was the original aircraft engineer!Have you ever gone snorkeling or scuba diving and noticed those full-body swimsuits made of neoprene? The design of those wetsuits was inspired by seals and whales. These marine animals have a thick layer of fat called blubber that insulates their bodies and keeps them warm in freezing cold waters. Wetsuits mimic this blubber-like layer to trap a thin film of water between your body and the suit, which your body then heats up to stay toasty while swimming. Talk about taking style tips from seals!One last example is Kevlar, the super-tough material used in bulletproof vests and lots of sports equipment. Kevlar's structure was inspired by the design of spider silk, which is crazy strong for its weight - even stronger than steel! Spider silk gets its incredible toughness from its cross-linked molecular structure. By arranging the molecules in Kevlar in a similar cross-linked pattern, scientists created an synthetic fiber that is five times stronger than steel! Who would have thought that studying how a tiny spider makes its silk could lead to materials that protect people's lives?There are so many more examples like sonar inspired by bats and dolphins, harvesting water from air like the desert beetle does, and even Velcro-like pads that let geckos walkupside-down. Whenever you look at the designs in nature, it's incredible to see millions of years of "field testing" through evolution. Plants, animals and other organisms have adapted super efficient ways to move, catch food, conserve water, protect themselves and more. By taking inspiration from thesebattle-tested biological designs, we can create new technologies to solve human problems too. Nature has given us an amazing source of ideas - all we have to do is pay close attention!So the next time you're outside, whether in your backyard or at a park, take a moment to observe all the plants and critters around you. The boys especially love building crazy high towers and ramp structures with the plastic brick blocks. Then they get those Hot Wheels cars and smash everything down, sending the little toys flying everywhere. I'm not allowed to play over there during free time because once I accidentally got hit in the head with a flying truck. No thanks!If you head to the back of the classroom, that's where the kitchen set is located. Sara, Jessie and a few other girls spend their free time "cooking" make-believe meals. They wear those cute chef hats and aprons and mix up pretend ingredients in the plastic bowls. Sometimes they even "bake" mud pies in the sandboxes outside if the weather is nice. I would join them but I want to be a firefighter when I grow up, not a cook!My friends Peter and Ricky are the leaders of the classroom detectives. But Chloe just can't help herself - she was born to be a rock star! Sometimes I join her and we make up silly songs about our families or favorite foods. I love looking at all the pictures in the books, especially the fairy tale ones. There are all sorts of adventures about princes and princesses, talking animals, and magic spells. Sometimes I curl up in the beanbag chair and read out loud to myself, using different voices just like Michael does. Once I get really good at reading, I'm going to be an author just like Dr. Seuss!Pretty soon though, Mrs. Parker begins ringing the cleanup bell. We all groan because we never want free time to end. But we know if we don't pick up our messes, we won't be able to do free choice activities tomorrow. So I put away the books, Michael stores the pretend kitchen set, and Chloe sets down her drumsticks. The block area is always the biggest disaster but ifwe all pitch in, we can click those plastic bricks back into the containers in no time.Once everything is all cleaned up, we gather back on the colorful rug for storytime and songs before our parents arrive to pick us up. Mrs. Parker reminds us to listen and pay attention, just like we do during lessons. I think storytime is the best part of the day! We get to hear such fun stories about talking pigs, chocolatey dreams, and silly monsters. We also sing all our favorite songs with the hand motions like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "The Wheels on the Bus." I don't know why but hearing those songs never gets old.All too soon, parents begin arriving at the classroom door. My friends and I give each other big hugs and high fives before skipping out to meet our families. I'm always a little sad that another day of fun has come to an end. The classroom gets super noisy with everybody yelling and laughing and playing.My favorite thing to do after class is play with my Lego sets. I keep a big box of Legos in my desk and after the bell rings, I take it out and start building all sorts of cool spaceships and castles and race cars on the floor. Sometimes my friends Jake and Tommy come over and we all build together, combining our pieces to make huge crazy constructions.Other kids like to play games instead of building Legos. Lots of them take out playing cards or board games and start setting them up on their desks. Three kids in my class, Maria, Paul, and Sarah, always get out this game called Guess Who and they play it at one desk together, asking each other those funny yes or no questions to try and guess the right characters.Over in the corner, there's a group of girls who spend all their time after class playing with dolls and stuffed animals. Theymake the dolls and animals talk to each other in littlehigh-pitched voices and have them act out stories and go on adventures. I think playing with dolls sounds kind of boring, but they sure seem to have fun doing it!When it's a nice day outside, some kids even open the classroom windows so we can throw things out or stick our heads out. Frank is always tossing paper airplanes out the window to see how far they'll go. And Amy sticks her head out and makes animal noises at people walking by, which makes everybody laugh really hard. I tried doing that once but I got in big trouble!There are a couple of kids who don't play or run around after class though. My friend Chloe always takes out her books and reads quietly at her desk until it's time to go home. And Brian just sits there drawing pictures with his colored pencils. I don't know how they can be so calm when there's so much fun happening all around them!Of course, while all this playing is going on, our teacher Mrs. Johnson is still in the classroom trying to get us to settle down. "Okay children, please take your seats and be quiet now!" she'll say over and over. But nobody ever listens to her. We're having way too much fun!Sometimes if we get too rowdy, Mrs. Johnson will get really mad and start yelling. "That's enough! I've asked you all to calm down but you won't listen! If you don't settle down right now, I'm calling all your parents!" She'll threaten. Then we might be a little quieter for a couple of minutes, but we always start getting loud and crazy again pretty quickly.Once in a while, Mrs. Johnson will turn on the TV and put in a movie to try and keep us entertained after class. I looked it up and it means being cautious and watching out for potential risks. Using fancy words doesn't make you sound smarter if nobody knows what they mean! Just say "we need to be careful about adopting AI everywhere."Her next paragraph was all about how AI could make our lives more efficient and convenient by automating tasks. She gave an example about AI assistants that can schedule appointments, answer questions, and manage your calendar. That's all true, but she failed to mention the potential downsides, like AI assistants losing your private data or scheduling the wrong things if they make mistakes. An essay should look at multiple perspectives.Later on, she talked about AI being used in medicine to diagnose diseases and recommend treatments. She wrote "An AI system's analysis is completely unbigotted and infaliable." Two mistakes there! First, she meant to say unbiased, not unbigotted. Bigotted means being opinionated against certain groups. Second, infaliable isn't even a real word! I think she meant infallible, which means incapable of making mistakes. Though even that isn't true - AI can definitely make mistakes since it's programmed by fallible humans.In her conclusion paragraph, she stated "As AI becomes more omnipresent in the comeing years, we must proactively shape guidelines and policies to protect sociatal wellbeing." Yikes, those are some bad spelling and grammar errors for a 12th grader! It should be "coming" not "comeing", "societal" not "sociatal", and omnipresent is another one of those fancy words that doesn't really make sense in this context since AI won't actually be everywhere in a few years.Overall, while I give Jessica's essay points for addressing some of the potential benefits and risks of AI, she made several errors in word choice, spelling, grammar, factual accuracy, and presenting a one-sided perspective. An essay on AI should more thoroughly explore both the advantages and disadvantages through concrete examples.Those are my thoughts! We packed our bags full of snacks, comics, and everything else we needed for two whole weeks of fun and games in the great outdoors!The bus ride there was really long and boring. Billy kept making fart noises and the counselors had to tell him to stop like a million times. But finally, we made it to the camp and I could smell the pine trees and lake water. This was gonna be awesome!Our first night in the cabin was pretty cool. We told ghost stories with our flashlights and dared each other to go out in the dark woods. Of course, nobody actually did it because we wereall chicken! We just laughed a lot and threw popcorn at each other before finally falling asleep.The next morning after a gross breakfast of runny eggs, it was time for activities! My favorite was archery because I'm a great shot. I seriously almost hit the bullseye like three times! Canoeing was fun too, until Tommy rocked the boat and we all fell into the freezing cold lake. Brrrrr!Later that night, we had a big campfire and roasted s'mores. While we were busy stuffing our faces with chocolate and marshmallows, one of the counselors told us about the camp's oldest legend - the Gobblin' Goblin!According to the story, every few summers a ginormous, green, smelly goblin comes out of the woods at night and gobbles up any kids he can find! The way the counselor told it with her creepy voice gave me total goosebumps.That night, I couldn't sleep at all because I kept hearing weird noises outside our cabin window. Were those the Gobblin' Goblin's footsteps coming to get us? Me and my buddies Eddie and Greg decided to be brave and go out to investigate.Using only our flashlight, we tiptoed out of our cabin and into the dark, creepy woods. The trees seemed to have creepyfaces and the shadows looked like monster claws reaching out for us! We jumped at every sound - a cracking twig, a hooting owl. Where was that Goblin?Suddenly, we heard a loud SNAP and a ginormous figure stepped out from behind a tree! It was bigger than three kids stacked on top of each other and was dragging its knuckles on the ground behind it. We saw two glowing eyes and smelled the worst stench ever!"The G-g-gobblin' G-goblin!" Eddie screamed at the top of his lungs. We turned around and booked it as fast as we could towards the cabins, screaming our heads off the whole way!We finally made it back to our cabin, out of breath and totally freaked out. When the counselors came to see what the ruckus was, we tried to tell them about the Goblin but they didn't believe us at all. To them, it just sounded like three boys got carried away with an old camp legend.Needless to say, we didn't get a wink of sleep for the rest of the week! We jumped at every sound and wouldn't even go to the bathroom alone at night. Our friends thought we were nuts, but we knew what we saw - or at least we thought we did!On the morning we were finally leaving camp, a ranger came to talk to us. He explained that what we had seen was actually Wilbur, the camp's sweet, gentle groundskeeper! The poor guy was just doing his nightly rounds, picking up litter in the dark. His size and the way he walked made him look like a monster, and he had bad gas from eating too many baked beans!We all laughed so hard at the anti-climactic truth. That sure explained the horrible stench too! I felt a little dumb for getting so scared, but it had seemed so real at the time. At least my summer camp adventure turned into an awesome tale that I'll never forget.Who knows, maybe the Gobblin' Goblin is still out there somewhere in the woods?
