First thing that passed through my mind was that it must be a misunderstanding, such a look was not meant for me, but later I saw the old lady’s face changing every time she saw me, at least seven times, no more doubt that she was very angry with me.I was confused, shocked, and near anger, my brains were spinning, trying to figure out h ow’s and why’s but somehow managed to not show it on my face. Went home, slept a night over it and decided that I have to find a way to break the ice with this lady. The very next day I bought some nice chocolate praying to see her again and when I caught sight of her, went straight to her and apologized telling her “I am so very sorry if I angered you, I had no such intention, please accept my apologizes”, and handled her the chocolate. Surprised, she told me not to mind her, and apologized too. It was an awkward moment, but we made peace and the grimaces换成embarrassment is/ are replaced by smiles now.I am very grateful for this experience, it shows me I still have plenty of work to do with my mind, I learned how it is not easy to take knowledge of, accept and forgive acts that we may feel as unfair, and it taught me of possibilities about fixing a conflict. Best advice to keep for myself? Do not react, do not be quick to judge, sleep it over, and throw in a pinch of empathy for self as well as others.(304词)24. The underlined phrase “out of the blue” in paragraph 1 probably means __________.A. unexpectedlyB. curiously。

I kept them in my hands as I walked in the post office. “Four is Ok,” an office said to a lady. The lady began searching her purse. Her face went red. I understood what had happened. The ambulance arrived and we went to a hospital, where she was treated in time and she came to life in the morning after rest and medical help.An interesting fact was that I guessed the woman in the raincoat was a doctor or a nurse. In the early 15th century, large-size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public. The Palace Museum is rectangular(长方形的) in shape, about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat(护城河). In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the suburban(郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts. Construction of the Forbidden City brought huge hardship to the laboring people. The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture(建筑) still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The palace has been expanded several times, but the original design was preserved. Afterliberation, some costly renovations(翻新) were done and the Palace Museum is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government.21. The Forbidden City is about 720,000 square meters.24. This passage most probably comes from a book on .A. customs and habitsB. dynasties and emperorsC. history and emperorsD. architecture and historyBCan dogs and cats live in peace in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new way for success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while attacking and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attack, while a dog doing the same signals admitting defeat. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can lear n how to talk “cat”. What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop theirintelligence. They can learn to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously thought. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The advantage of this research on cats and dogs may not only about pets — to people who don't get along, including neighbours, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.25.The underlined w ord “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.A. earlyB. sweetlyC. quicklyD. surprisingly26.Some cats and dogs may fight when ________.A. they are cold to each otherB. they look away from each otherC. they understand each other's signals in a wrong wayD. they are introduced at an early age27.What is found surprising about cats and dogs?A. According to a recent study, the more you struggle (努力) while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later. It might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. “Don’t be too quick to get help when learning something new,” education expe rt Manu Kapursaid. “Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another instead of getting help from the teacher.Wi th the teacher’s help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly, but they did come up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process (过程), not just the solution.Kapur’s advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than goin g to your teacher for help. “Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won’t work,” says Kapur. “The struggle needs to be a real attempt to figure out (想出) or solvea problem in as many ways as possible.”29. Which of the following is the best way to learn according to the passage?A. Figure something out on your own.B. Ask teachers for help in time.C. Be given the solution to the problem.D. AWhen you walk along a street in a big city in the United States, you may see clocks in most stores. Radio announcers give the correct time during the day. People there think that it is important to know the time. Most Americans have watches. They want to do certain things at certain times. They do not want to be late. Not all people all over the world value time. Suppose you visit a certain country in South America. You would find that people living there do not like to rush. If you had an appointment (约会)with someone, he would probably be late. He would not care for arriving on time. In some countries in South America, even the radio programs may not begin right on time, nor do the radio announcers think it important to announce the right time. Most Americans own watches.BFitzgerald, a very wealthy English man, had only one child, a son, who naturally was the apple of his eye. His wife died when the child was in his early teens. So Fitzgerald devoted himself to fathering the kid. Unluckily the son died in his late teens.Meanwhile, Fitzgerald's wealth was increasing all the time. He spent a lot on art works of the masters. Later Fitzgerald himself became seriously ill. Before his death, he had carefully prepared his will as to how his wealth would be settled——to sell his entire collection at an auction(拍卖).Because of the large quantity and high quality of his collection, a huge crowd of possible buyers gathered for the auction. Many of them were museum directors and private collectors eager to bid(出价). Before the auction, the art works were shown, among which was a painting of Fitzgerald's son by an unknown artist. Because of its poor quality, it received little attention. When it was time for the auction, the auctioneer gaveled(敲槌)the crowd to attention. First the lawyer read from Fitzgerald's will that the first art work to be auctioned was thepainting of his son.The poor-quality painting didn't receive any bidders except one——the old servant who had attended to the son and loved him, and who for emotional reasons offered the only bid.As soon as the servant bought the painting for less than one English pound, the auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the lawyer to read again from the will. The crowd became quiet, and the lawyer read from the will: “Whoever buys the painting of my son gets all my collection.” Then the auction was over.26. Fitzgerald was __________.A. a museum directorB. a master of artC. an art collectorD. an art auctioneer27. Which of the following is TRUE according to the story?A. What helped the old servant win the whole collection of Fitzgerald's?A. No more than one pound.B. His emotion for his young master.C. Great increase of his wealth.D. His strong passion for art.30. At the result of the auction, the old man would feel more than ______________.A. sadB. surprisedC. interestedD. expectedCWe parents often take material things for love. “I give him everything,” a disappointed mother complains. “New shoes, video-games, and his own TV. You’d think he’d at least show me respect!”Of course, love and presents are related. Most parents work hard to earn money. They want their children to have more than they did and have better lives. The problem is, most children don’t connect the things parents buy with the labor that pays for them. Children have more, but our culture——and television in particular——teaches them that more is never enough. Having more does not mean that a child feels loved. From a parent’s point of view, children are not thankful. But this has to do with their natural growth. Young children see their parents as all-mighty(万能的). If parents fail to provide what they want, it must be a matter of choice. It’s normal for children, even school-age ones, not to be able to take another person’s point of view. For example, they may dislike their parents for working long hours, and not realize that the parent would also rather have more time at home.In addition to giving presents, we have to find other ways to express love and create memories. Reading or telling stories together, making music and playing games are all ways for families to spend time without spending money. Traditions like reading favorite poems and even snowball fights all serve the purpose(达到目的). Most importantly, as parents, we have to learn to hold back some energy from our tiring jobs. When we’re present for our children, we ourselves become the presents we want to give.31. The underlined word “them”( in Paragraph 2) refers to______________.A. the things parents buyB. parentsC. childrenD. better lives32. According to the passage, children______.A. want fewer presentsB. want presents rather than loveC. are taught to ask for moreD. can live better without their parents.33. We can judge from the passage that there is _________.A. a heavy job load for some parentsB. a lack of money in some familiesC. misunderstanding between parents and childrenD. love between parents and children34.
