Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension (紧张气氛) between the interests (利益) of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings were. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs--or intelligence quotients--of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points.Murray Strauss from the University of New Hampshire worked with Mallie Paschall from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation. Professor Strauss has written extensively about physical punishment of children. He says the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. He also looked at average IQs in other nations and found them lower where spanking was more common.1.Which could be the best title of the passage?A. PunishmentB. The Best Way to Influence Behavior.C. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?D. Two Recent Studies.2.The underlined word “spanked” probably means______.A. wonB. punishedC. testedD. praised 3.According to the passage, the researchers may agree the best way to influence behavior is______.A. rewarding good behaviorB. correcting bad behaviorC. punishing badly-behaved childrenD. praising well-behaved children试题分析:文章主要介绍了两项研究的过程和研究成果。

阅读理解(2018·郑州一中入学测试)Enjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes,at haircutting shops,at airports...even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol.People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O'Hair Salon,Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and ma keup tables.“This is our first show at a hair salon,”Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week's performance.Frank said she and band members,Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time“interacting”with the audience.Concerts in people's homes,or small businesses such as O'Hair's,are becoming more popular, musicians say.“There is a more relaxed atmosphere,”said Domenic Cicala,a musician who opened up his O'Hair Salon to concerts.“People really get to know the artists.”At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers.Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.“People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,”said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Strangers,a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones.

Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·江西名校联盟检测)Several decades ago, educators in theU.S.A. began to call attention to a national problem: most students leave American schools without the mathematical skills needed for jobs or for higher education. This was especially true for female and minority students. The Educational Testing Service reported that, in an international survey, American teenagers had the lowest math scores. This situation has been defined as “innumeracy”, or the inability to grasp the basic idea of mathematics.Mathematicians, teachers, and scientists were alarmed by these findings. They looked for the reasons and decided that, in addition to poor education, there are many psychological blocks.Embarrassment about not knowing math can lead to fear in the classroom.Fear can lead to silence because students do not want to draw attention to their lack of knowledge. As a result, those students fall further and further behind.Low__visibility__in__the__classroom__has__notalways been__recognized__as__a__silent__call__for__help.Math educators decided to try to change that.Math reform is beginning with the educators themselves.Teachers are now being trained to recognize and to help students work through “math anxiety”—the roadblock on their way to gaining competence in mathematics. In addition, math textbooks are being updated to help students understand that math is not a sort of foreign language of numbers.Math is a tool that helps us to analyze patterns and structures, and to discover relationships.Traditional computing skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are still being taught, of course. However, there is added emphasis on logical thinking and creative problem solving, to which there may be several equally valid solutions.【解题导语】本文讲述了美国学生无法掌握数学基本概念的现象、原因及相应的对策。
单元检测(三十八) Highlights of My Senior Year Ⅰ. AMy mother is a talented dressmaker. When I was a child, I would lose myself in her pattern books. I liked the pictures of children's clothes — they gave me ideas for making dresses for my dolls. I liked cutting a hole in a piece of cloth for the doll's head and tying a belt around its waist. Perhaps that was why my mother sent me to the French sewing class.French sewing was taught by Mademoiselle Lambert on Friday afternoons. She also taught us the French language. So we called the stitches (缝法) by their French names. I didn't have any trouble with that. I was a star in French class.French sewing, however, was another matter. Sewing is a skill that requires the quality I always need: patience. Every Friday I suffered. I had to go to Mademoiselle Lambert and had her correct my mistakes. I watched sadly as, with a slight frown (皱眉), she carefully repaired my ugly sewing work. This was Mademoiselle Lambert in a different situation. I missed her energetic “Gre at!” after I successfully translated a passage in French. All I got now was a tired “OK” as she handed back my work.Gradually, I realized that some other girls who suffered from reading in French could make perfect French knots (法式花芯结), with which I never had the patience. Many times Mademoiselle Lambert smiled at their works and praised, “Great!” In French sewing class, they were the stars. And so I understood how they felt in French class when the_word wouldn't come. Now, I'm satisfied that I could sew well enough to complete easy patterns, though I could never sew like my mother.
