3-1 Passage oneInterviewer: Can you tell me…how do you think you have changed as you have matured? What things have had a major influence on you?Speaker 1 : Well, let me think…I suppose going to university had a big impact on my life. It made me much more open-minded. I met so many different types of people there with weird and wonderful ideas and it changed the way I see the world. I‘m much more tolerant now… It made me a more rounded pe rson.Interviewer: Great, and had any particular person had a central role in forming your character?Speaker 1: I guess that‘d have to be my grandfather. I was very close to him, and he taught me to stand up for my beliefs. He was always telling me about this…Interviewer: So what people or events have had an impact on your life?Speaker 2: I think that traveling my gap year made me grow up and see both the beauty of the world and, well…just the generosity of ordinary people. I traveled a lot around Asia a nd you know, I found that in some of the poorest countries, like Cambodia and Laos, people share whatever little they have, and they possess a real joy for life. It‘s probably made me a less selfish person.Interviewer: Interesting…so you would recommend t hat young people take a gap year to discover themselves and the world?Speaker 2: Definitely. It gives you an opportunity o learn about the world beyond the one you grew up in and I found it really…Interviewer: Could you tell me what things in your life have had the greatest influence in forming your personality?Speaker 3: Well…a couple of years ago I was on a reality TV show where a group of young people all lived in a house together. Each week some one was voted off by the audience. I got down to the final three! I suppose being on the show and seeing how the other contestants behaved made me realize how selfish and spiteful some people can be just to get what they want. I also realized it‘s best to just be yourself in life. If you pretend to be someone different people will eventually see through the lies.Interviewer: Right…And how did you feel when you were eventually voted off?Speaker 3: Relieved, to be honest with you. But you know, a slight regret that I didn‘t win because I kind of…Interviewer: So you can tell me, what one thing do you think that has had the biggest impact on your life?Speaker 4: Hmm, that‘s a difficult question. But I think helping victims of the tsunami in 2004 had a very great impact on me. I‘m half Thai and I‘d just arrived in Thailand for a family Christmas holiday. When I heard the news I knew I had to help-you couldn‘t not. I ended up acting as an interpreter for a group of volunteer doctors. It was an incredibly difficult time but you know, even in the middle of such a horrific tragedy there is still a huge amount of genuine human kindness.Interviewer: That‘s amazing! And has it changed the way you view your future…采访者你能不能告诉我…你认为在你渐渐成熟的过程中产生了怎样的变化呢?什么事情对你产生了主要的影响?发言人1 嗯,让我想想… 我认为上大学对我的生活产生了重大的影响。

The Solar Water Heater[11:55.15]Solar water heaters are used around the world and are not very difficult to build. [12:02.37]The system is based on a design developed some years ago.[12:06.84]It can heat seventy liters of water to sixty degrees Celsius.[12:12.28]It can do this between sunrise and noon on a clear day[12:16.79]with an average air temperature of thirty-two degrees Celsius.[12:21.75]There are two parts to the solar water heater.[12:25.56]One part is made of a sheet of metal painted black.[12:30.79]Black surfaces become hotter in the sun than surfaces painted any other color. [12:37.54]The second part of the solar water heater holds the water for the system.[12:42.67]This storage tank can be a container that holds about one hundred liters.[12:48.10]Two rubber pipes are attached to the water storage tank.[12:53.54]One pipe lets water flow into the system.[12:57.23]The other lets water flow out.[13:00.39]The solar water heater will last about two years[13:05.01]before the rubber pipes need to be replaced.91The American Dream[00:56.14]Each individual may define the American dream differently.[01:01.45]But the general idea is that a person in the United States[01:06.14]has the freedom to carry out his or her goals.[01:10.26]It usually means a person has the chance[01:13.29]to work hard, earn money and create a secure life.[01:17.90]For many people, this means being able to get a good education,[01:23.32]have a good job and own a house.[01:26.37]The expression is often linked to immigrants[01:29.94]who have come to this country seeking more freedom or a better life[01:34.28]than they could have in their own countries.[01:36.78]Some people would say that the United States Declaration of Independence first defined the American dream.[01:45.37]It expressed why the American colonies decided to fight British colonial rule[01:51.77]in order to become an independent nation.[01:54.85]The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal,[02:01.06]and that they have the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. How to Apply to an American College[00:58.35]The American university system is one of the best in the world,[01:02.77]but competition for admission can be steep.[01:06.56]The application process itself is a labyrinth[01:10.14]that most American students approach only[01:13.06]with the help of school councilors, parents and peers.[01:17.60]Above all else, applying to American colleges and universities[01:22.70]requires patience and persistence.[01:26.38]The application process consists of filling out[01:29.49]the Common Application, supplemental applications,[01:33.16]writing a personal statement, and any necessary supplemental essays.[01:38.64]In addition, all applicants are required to submit standardized test scores,[01:44.68]letters of recommendation, high school transcripts,[01:48.16]along with an application fee.[01:51.21]You should study the web sites of schools that interest you.[01:55.13]You can find information about how and when to apply,[01:59.92]how much it will cost and whether any financial aid is available.[02:04.90]And you may be able to apply online[02:07.45]and pay the application charge with a credit card.93Credit Cards on Campus[00:57.84]Most undergraduates in the United States last year had at least one credit card. [01:04.75]Half had four or more.[01:07.80]Borrowers who do not pay their card debt in full each month[01:12.22]have to pay interest on whatever balance remains.[01:16.07]In a time of economic downturn,[01:18.87]college students are depending on credit cards more than ever.[01:23.60]Many seem to use them to live beyond their means[01:27.27]- to spend more than they have.[01:30.01]However, a new law makes it harder for banks[01:33.83]to give credit cards to people under 21.[01:37.93]To get a credit card, they need a parent or other adult over 21 to accept joint responsibility.[01:46.27]Or they need to show they can repay their debts independently.[01:51.68]Also, schools are urged to consider limiting the number of places on campus[01:57.99]where companies can market credit cards.[02:01.10]And they are urged to offer credit card and debt education[02:05.21]and counseling sessions to all new students.Allowance[00:57.29]Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance.[01:02.30]The purpose is to let children learn from experience[01:07.15]at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.[01:11.51]The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend differs from family to family.[01:19.03]Timing is another consideration.[01:22.39]Some children get a weekly allowance.[01:25.50]Others get a monthly allowance.[01:28.74]In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything,[01:33.97]the child is expected to pay for with the money.[01:37.08]At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. [01:44.48]If they do this, they will learn the hard way[01:48.65]that spending must be done within a budget.[01:51.88]Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.[01:59.22]The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving.[02:08.37]Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs.95Savings[00:55.26]In the United States, people who want to start a savings have many choices.[01:01.74]Banks and credit unions are traditional places to open an account.[01:06.89]Savings are protected up to a limit if a federally guaranteed bank or credit union ever fails.[01:14.53]Banks and other financial organizations pay interest on savings accounts,[01:20.88]but the interest rates are low.[01:23.01]Certificates of deposit are another way to save.[01:27.12]They pay higher interest rates.[01:30.09]With a certificate of deposit, a person agrees[01:33.72]not to withdraw an amount of money for a period of time.[01:37.77]The term could be three months, or it could be several years.[01:42.57]Longer terms, and larger amounts, pay higher interest.[01:47.45]Another way to save is through a money market fund.[01:51.69]They pay higher interest than savings accounts.[01:55.41]The money is usually placed in short-term government securities.[02:01.13]Money market funds, however, may not be federally guaranteed like other kinds of savings.Savings[00:55.26]In the United States, people who want to start a savings have many choices.[01:01.74]Banks and credit unions are traditional places to open an account.[01:06.89]Savings are protected up to a limit if a federally guaranteed bank or credit union ever fails.[01:14.53]Banks and other financial organizations pay interest on savings accounts,[01:20.88]but the interest rates are low.[01:23.01]Certificates of deposit are another way to save.[01:27.12]They pay higher interest rates.[01:30.09]With a certificate of deposit, a person agrees[01:33.72]not to withdraw an amount of money for a period of time.[01:37.77]The term could be three months, or it could be several years.[01:42.57]Longer terms, and larger amounts, pay higher interest.[01:47.45]Another way to save is through a money market fund.[01:51.69]They pay higher interest than savings accounts.[01:55.41]The money is usually placed in short-term government securities.[02:01.13]Money market funds, however, may not be federally guaranteed like other kinds of savings.97Mergers and Acquisitions[00:56.59]Mergers and acquisitions are a big part of the corporate finance world.[01:03.62]A merger is when two or more companies combine their operations.[01:09.64]Generally the combined company is able to negotiate lower prices with suppliers [01:17.97]because of its bigger size and market.[01:21.33]Jobs are sometimes also cut in mergers to save money.[01:27.68]The idea is to increase the value of the combined company for shareholders.[01:34.21]But that does not always happen.[01:37.88]Some experts suggest that only one merger in three creates big gains for shareholders. [01:46.16]At the same time, mergers can reduce competition,[01:51.63]resulting in higher prices.[01:54.43]The simplest way for companies to combine is through an acquisition.[02:00.28]One company buys another.[02:03.52]Companies may take a large part or a small part in guiding the policies of the businesses they acquire.[02:13.04]Some investors buy controlling shares of stock in companies[02:19.27]but leaving their management teams in place.Bankruptcy[00:56.61]Bankruptcy is a legal process for people and businesses that are in debt.[01:02.58]It is designed to help them get a new start.[01:06.50]It is also designed to help their creditors get paid[01:10.29]at least some of what they are owed.[01:13.40]In America, two kinds of bankruptcy are most common for individuals.[01:19.31]These are called chapter seven and chapter thirteen.[01:23.48]They are named after the parts of the United States Code that define them.[01:28.96]Chapter thirteen bankruptcy requires people to have a plan to repay their creditors. [01:35.74]They make payments for three to five years[01:38.85]until most of their debt is paid off.[01:42.27]In chapter seven bankruptcy, people must give up some of their property.[01:47.75]The property is then sold to pay their creditors.[01:51.48]But the people are able to keep the money they earn[01:54.53]after they bring their bankruptcy case.[01:57.70]Under chapter seven they are also able to keep most of the property they buy after that time.[02:05.36]The second and third readings.99]Debating Skills[00:55.83]A debate involves a discussion of the pros and cons of an issue.[01:02.61]Debating successfully is all about using argument and persuasion[01:08.52]to convince other people that your views are right.[01:13.81]Here are steps to debating perfection.[01:18.16]First, research the subject,[01:21.02]so that you have facts to back up your views.[01:25.13]Then, use logic to develop your case and make your points.[01:30.72]Lead each point on from what you were previously saying.[01:36.14]That way you build up a story and expand your answer.[01:41.31]It's always good to consider the counter-arguments in advance.[01:46.31]That way the other side can't catch you out and you're always prepared.[01:52.71]Next, be open-minded and prepared to change your opinion[01:58.99]if the other side convinces you your argument is flawed.[02:03.60]Last but not least, stick to the subject being debated[02:09.32]and don't stray into other areas.[02:12.55]It sounds obvious but it's not easy to do once you start debating.100English New Words[00:57.56]New words enter the English language all the time.[01:02.17]In fact, English has always been in a state of evolution.[01:07.90]In recent years more and more words and phrases have entered the language. [01:14.50]It's partly due to the increased willingness of editors[01:19.16]to include them in the dictionaries.[01:22.46]But where do all these words come from?[01:25.32]Words come out of the culture they represent and describe.[01:30.92]So if you've got a new development in medicine, for example, bird flu,[01:37.39]then you'll get the new word coming out of that.[01:42.11]If there's a military conflict,[01:44.29]that may well bring all sorts of new words to the fore.[01:49.15]Going back in time the First and Second World Wars[01:53.62]were times of great creativity of language[01:57.99]because people from different countries met each other and exchanged their words [02:04.40]and words developed from there.[02:07.26]So really words come from the playground, politics and any area of life[02:14.54]because every area of life is changing from day to day.。

To start, I’d like to have an introduction to advertising first. Advertising can be defined as a paid form of non-professional but encouraging, complimenting and positively favorable presentation of goods and services to a group of people by an identified sponsor. It does not include distribution of free samples or offering bonuses, these are sales promotion. In simplest words, advertising is an introduction to consumers and general public, of services and goods. In a modern society, no company can hope to make a profit on any product unless it advertises it first. Advertising creates brand awareness in general public and to make business more popular within the circle of potential buyers. Advertising, in a straight line, increases profit of the companies by escalating its revenue. The expenditure made on advertisement can turn as good boost in earnings. Therefore, the most important decision that a company has to make regarding advertising is where to advertise. On TV? In magazines? On the radio? In newspapers? We refer to these means of communication as “the media.”There are three categories of media: print, broadcast, and direct. Today, we are going to describe each of these categories and discuss their importance and usefulness in advertising. The first category, the print media, consists of printed information sources; in other words, newspapers and magazines. For the advertisers, each of these has certain advantages and disadvantages. Let’s talk first about newspapers, which receive more money from advertisements each year than any other medium. This is because newspaper advertising has several outstanding advantages. First of all, nearly everybody reads newspapers. Therefore, newspaper ads reach huge numbers of people. Moreover. Newspapers are generally local. This allows. small, local businesses to advertise directly to their potential customers. Third, newspaper advertising is relatively cheap; so the ad can be as long as the advertiser wants, and it can also be repeated. On the other hand, newspaper ads have no color, and they are not very exciting or glamorous. Instead, you find these ads in the second type of print medium, magazines. For the advertiser, the greatest advantage of magazines is that they have specialized groups of readers. In other words, the people who read Car andDriver are probably not the same people who read Glamour, which is a women’s magazine, or The New Republic, a political magazine. Therefore, advertising in a magazine allows a business to direct its ads to the people who are most interested in the product. The big disadvantage of magazine advertisement is that it can be very expensive, especially in magazines like Playboy or National Geographic. Let’s move along now and talk about the broadcast media, by which we mean radio and television. These also have both advantages and disadvantages. First, radio. Radio has two of the same advantages as newspapers: Almost everybody listens to it, and it’s usually local. However, the radio is a background medium, and most listeners are doing something else while listening, which means that the ad has to work hard to get their attention. Further, because radio listeners are spread over many stations, a company may have to advertise simultaneously on several stations to reach your target audience. Millions of dollars are spent each year on radio ads, but millions more are spent on television advertising. You can easily understand why. Of all the media, TV, with sound, sight, and motion, is the most dramatic, so the ads are easy to remember.’ How many of you, for example, can sing the slogan for Coca-Cola, “It’s the real thing?” That’s because TV permits ads to reach large numbers of people on a national or regional level in a short period of time. On the other hand, ads on TV are enormously expensive. For example, a thirty-second commercial during the evening can cost $150,000. Obviously, only large companies can afford to advertise on television. There is one more category of media that is used extensively in advertising. These are the direct media. The most common direct media is the mail, and direct mail advertising is a very big business. Even if you have only lived in this country for a short time, you have probably already received advertisements in the mail. The advantage of advertising by mail is that advertising message is targeted to those most likely to buy the product or service. However, many people don’t bother to read these ads; in fact, we call them “junk mail” and often throw them away without even opening the envelope. Another direct medium is billboards; these are the huge signs that you see whenever you drive down the street. Billboards are useful because they are colorful and easy to see. And the message is permanent. However, the message must be short enough for drivers to read as they are passing by. The third type of direct medium is signs and posters. They are usually used in what is called “point of purchase” advertising —that is, ads that appear in the same place where the product is being sold. You can see point of purchase advertising every time you go to the supermarket. There are always signs in the window telling you what is on sale that day. This is also a kind of advertising. Its great advantage is that it is cheap. OK. This brings us to the end of today’s lecture. I hope now you have a better understanding of different advertising media. In our next lecture, we’ll discuss in detail how to choose the best advertising media for different types of companies.AdvertisingI. She was once as one of the most important supporters of No Child Left Behind policy, or NCLB. But in her new book, she strongly opposed to NCLB. But why did you support the policy so vigorously before?W: For many years, there has been widespread recognition mat the performance of American students was less than optimal. NCLB seemed to offer a reasonable plan to strengthen basic skills of all students, which would men make them stronger in other subjects and prepare them better for college and the workplace.M: What motivated you to change these views and write your new book?W: As I saw the actual effects of NCLB, I came to realize that the focus on test scores in reading and math was having negative effects on subjects that were not tested, like history, geography, science, literature, foreign languages, etc. Because of the high stakes attached to NCLB testing, there was no incentive to teach anything that was not tested. Billions have been invested in materials to prepare for state testing. Yet the results have been meager to date, even in the subjects that are constantly tested.M: What message are you trying to convey about the current and future state of the American school system in your new book?W: I hope with my book to cause policymakers to rethink their reliance of testing, accountability, and private-sector choice as solutions to the problems of public education. I would like to see a renaissance of educational values; I would like to slow the momentum to reduce all education to a test score and to privatize public services.M: Many reviews have been very positive but some say you have changed your views on education completely. What has changed? What has not changed?W: I have never changed my fundamental principles, which center on the idea that all children should have access to an education of high quality, one that includes not only basic skills, but history, geography, foreign languages, literature, science, and otherstudies, as well as physical education and health. Accountability and choice are means, not ends. I concluded that they are not effective means, because they subvert the goal. So I abandoned the means, but not the end, which is what matters most.M: You talk in your book about your education in Houston. How does your experience compare with that of students today? What has improved? What has declined?W: I had a good education, but not a great education. I don’t want to romanticize the public schools of my generation. Yet, despite their inadequacies, the schools understood that all students should have a broad education. Most tests were essays and demonstrations of knowledge, not standardized, multiple-choice questions. The current reliance on standardized tests is a product of advancing technology, but it has a bad effect on education because it narrows our means of gauging what students have learned. So now they learn to guess the right answer, instead of demonstrating knowledge and comprehension.M: One criticism of your book is that you are “necessarily vague about how to achieve your goals.” What concrete actions would you recommend at this point for American educational reform?W: My book was intended to be a critique of what we are doing now in national policy. Part of the critique implies different policies. For example, policymakers seem to have agreed on putting non-educators into positions of authority at every point in the education system: So we have school superintendents who are lawyers, businessmen, military veterans. We have principals who have little experience as educators but took a course to learn how to be a principal. And there is great enthusiasm among journalists for recruiting new college graduates to be teachers, who will remain in the classroom for only two or three years, then leave for other professions. I strongly recommend that we make education more professional, not less so. That we have superintendents who have extensive background in education; that we have principals who have been master teachers; and that we insist on high qualifications for new teachers and commit to building a better and stronger profession. At the same time. I believe we must have in every school a strong curriculum that ensures that every student will get a solid education in all the major subjects, not just those that are tested.M: In your opinion, what are the root causes of the high dropout rate nationally?W: Students drop out for different reasons. Some leave because they want to earn money to help support their family; some leave because they are discouraged after failing in school repeatedly. Some girls leave because they are pregnant. Some leave, but return at a later date. The most consistent predictor of school leaving is poverty, which is also correlated with low achievement. So failure breeds failure.M: Yes, OK. Thank you for all the insightful view on the education system.W: You are most welcome.11.What do we learn about NCLB?A.It proves to be a perfect educational program.B.It doesn’t focus on test scores in reading and math.C.It has negative effects on subjects not tested.D.It has results in constantly tested subjects as expected.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:听力12.What do Dr. Ravitch’s basic principles of education center on?A.All children should have access to an education of high quality.B.Accountability and choice are very effective means.C.More public services should be privatized at a faster speed.D.Physical education isn’t an essential part of high-quality education.正确答案:A 涉及知识点:听力13.What is the limitation of standardized tests nowadays?A.There are only essays and demonstrations of knowledge.B.There are too few multiple-choice questions.C.They narrow ways of measuring what students have learned.D.They make it difficult to unify a standard for evaluation.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:听力14.Dr. Ravitch will support the following policies EXCEPTA.having principals who have been excellent teachers.B.insisting on high qualifications for new teachers.C.committing to building a better and stronger profession.D.that students get a solid education only in tested subjects.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:听力15.Which of the following is NOT the reason for high dropout rate nationally?A.Some students have to earn money to support the family.B.Some students fail repeatedly in school.C.Some girls become pregnant.D.Some students get unfair treatment in school.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:听力SECTION C NEWS BROADCASTDirections: In this section you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. Due to the obstruction caused by the mountains, Yu Gong sought to dig through them with hoes and baskets. When questioned as to the seemingly impossible nature of his task, Yu Gong replied that while he may not finish this task in his lifetime, through the hard work of himself, his children, and their children, and so on through the many generations, some day the mountains would be removed if he persevered. The gods in Heaven impressed with his hard work and perseverance, and then ordered to remove the mountains.【听力原文】Section AN e w s R e p o r t O n eKenyan police say one person was killed and 26 injured in an explosion at a bus station in central Nairobi. The blast hit a bus about to set off for the Ugandan capital Kampala. Last July, the Somali group al-Shabab said it was behind the blasts in the Ugandan capital which killed more than 70 people. Will Ross reports from the Kenyan capital. The explosion happened beside a bus which was about to set off for an overnight journey from Nairobi to the Ugandan capital Kampala. Some eyewitnesses report that a bag was about to be loaded on board, but it exploded during a security check. Windows of the red bus were left smashed, and blood could be seen on the ground beside the vehicle. Just hours earlier, Uganda’s police chief had warned of possible Christmas-time attacks by Somali rebels.Questions 1 and 2 are based on the news report you have just heard.1. What is the news report mainly about?2. When did the incident occur?Woolworths is one of the best known names on the British High Street. It’s been in business nearly a cen tury. Many of its 800 stores are likely to close following the company’s decision to call in administrators after an attempt to sell the business for a token £1 failed. The company has huge debts. The immediate cause for the collapse has been British’s slide toward recession, which has cut into consumer spending. However, the business had been in trouble for years. Known for low-priced general goods, Woolworths has struggled in the face of competition from supermarkets expanding beyond groceries and a new generation of internet retailers. Many of the store group’s 25,000 employees are likely to lose their jobs. Some profitable areas such as the DVD publishing business will survive.Questions 3 and 4 are based on the news report you have just heard.3. What do we learn about Woolworths from the news report?4. What did Woolworths attempt to do recently?Cairo is known for its overcrowded roads, irregular driving practices and shaky old vehicles, but also for its air pollution. In recent months, though, environmental studies indicate there have been signs of improvement. That’s due in part to the removal of many of the capital’s old-fashioned black and white taxis. Most of these dated back to the 1960s and 70s and were in a poor state of repair. After new legislation demanded their removal from the roads, a low interest loan scheme was set up with three Egyptian banks so drivers could buy new cars. The government pays about $900 for old ones to be discarded and advertising on the new vehicles helps cover repayments. The idea has proved popular with customers—they can now travel in air-conditioned comfort and because the new cabs are metered, they don’t have to argue over fares. Banks and car manufacturers are glad for the extra business in tough economic times. As for the taxi drivers, most are delighted to be behind the wheel of new cars, although there have been a few complaints about switching from black and white to a plain white color.Questions 5 to 7 are based on the news report you have just heard.5. What change took place in Cairo recently?6. What helped bring about the change?7. Why do customers no longer argue with new cab drivers? Section BC o n v e r s a t i o n O n eW: Good morning, Mr. Smith. May I join you on the walking exercise? I thought it is a good idea to walk around to getsome fresh air early in the morning.M: Do come along. It is nice to have some company for a good exercise. My wife comes along with me sometimes but she isquite irregular. We have a large family and she has to preparebreakfast for the children and for me.W: Do you take walking exercise every morning?M: Yes. I feel much better after a good walk in the morning. I have to sit at a desk the whole day. Some exercise before going towork helps. It clears my head and puts vigor into my body.W: Some people prefer to take an evening walk after dinner.M: I get fairly late coming back from office. Then I have my little son with his lessons in the evenings.W: These days, fitness walking is getting very popular. Nearly all men come out for fitness walking between five and six in themorning.M: I notice that they are the middle-aged and older people, who are out walking in the morning. They understand theimportance of morning exercise.W: Yes, it seems like that. The young white collars go to parties after works so often that they can hardly get up early in themorning. That is the reason for their absence from fitnesswalking.M: Also perhaps they are in the prime of life and do not feel the strain like us older men.W: You said it.M: Well, today’s walking exercise was very refreshing and informative. I must go home now and get ready for work. Seeyou tomorrow again for a morning exercise.Questions 8 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.8. What do we learn about the man’s wife?9. In my B.A., I had commerce as my major.W: Do you have any previous experience in sales?M: This is my first regular job. I was a student before this. But I do have a little experience in sales.W: If this is to be your first job, where did you get the experience in sales?M: During my summer vacation, I used to work as a part-time door-to-door salesman for a lady who embroidered table linen at home. I went from door to door selling her handiwork. I earned a small commission on the good that I sold.W: That was enterprising of you. Didn’t that door-to-door selling interfere with your studies?M: Not really, Mrs. I did this work during my holidays when I had little else to do.W: Do you speak Hindi, Mr. Ford? That would be an essential requirement for a salesman in this area. Without a car, most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor, he doesn’t feel really poor when he has a car. There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all, the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. Long distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world.Nowadays there is a good system of air service provided by plane, but it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The Americans spirit of independence is what really made the car popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time, and this is the freedom that Americans most want to have.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16. What will happen to poor American when he owns a car?17. According to the passage, which of the following is true?18. Why do Americans prefer cars to other means of transport? P a s s a g e T w oFrom the earliest times the sea has been a place of secrets—a place of mysteries hidden from us by thousands of kilograms of water. The early Greeks sailed the oceans. They wrote about the sea. But since they could not dive deep into the waters, they could not lay bare these secrets. And so the secrets remained. But today we have more ways to study the sea than did the early Greeks. Scientists are learning about life in the sea, and how it may improve life on land. The study of sea plants and sea animals mayhelp us to learn new ways of getting food.Scientists are searching the ocean floor for oil and gas deposits, to keep our world running smoothly. And they are also learning how not to pollute the oceans. For if the sea dies, so does life on earth. The sea may even become our home someday. People are studying ways to build cities on the ocean, and make more room to live in an overcrowded world.More study was done, at first, by divers. But it was too dangerous for divers to keep diving and coming to the surface. So now, laboratories on the ocean s’floor are homes for divers for months on end. Divers can work outside in the water and return to the laboratory to eat and sleep.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.19. Who wrote about the seas in early times?20. What are the scientists learning about life in the sea?21. What happens when the sea dies?P a s s a g e T h r e eIn 1945, a new type of airplane engine was invented. It was much lighter and more powerful than earlier engines, and enabled warplane to fly faster and higher than ever before. This type of engine was called the jet engine because it blows a large jet of hot airbackwards at high speeds. The first airliner to use the new jet engine was built in Britain and it began carrying passengers in 1925. It had two jet engines and flew much higher than petrol-engine airliners. At this height the air is thinner and very cold, and so the airplane can cut through the air more easily. There are no clouds to disturb the flight of the airliner, and the rain and thunderstorms are far below it. The sky above is a brilliant blue. However, because the air is so cold and thin, the cabin has to be air-conditioned and has to be at normal pressure so that the passengers may eat, read and sleep in comfort.Today all long distance airliners have jet engines. The modern jet airliners are very big and carry as many as 200 passengers. Some airliners are even bigger; they can carry 350 passengers on two different floors. In this way air travel can be made much cheaper.Tomorrow’s airliners will be flying at over twice the speed of today’s airliners. In fact, a new-type airliner has already reached this enormous speed. It can carry passengers in safety and comfort far up in the blue sky.Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.22. Why can the jet plane cut through the air more easily?23. Why can the passengers in jet airliners eat, read and sleep incomfort?24. How many passengers can the biggest jet airliners described in the text carry?25. Compared with the speed of today’s jet airliners, how will tomorrow’s airliners fly?。

英语听力材料范文
英语听力材料范文Today, we will be listening to a passage about the history of the United States flag. The first official flag of the United States was created by the Second Continental Congress in 1777. This flag was made of thirteen alternating red and white stripes and had a British Union Flag in the left corner. The stripes represented the original thirteen colonies of the United States. In 1794, two additional stripes were added in order to represent the admission of Vermont and Kentucky into the Union. This flag was also known as the "Great Star" or "Star-Spangled Banner" and had 15 stripes and 15 stars. In 1818, a new American flag was adopted and it was thefirst to feature the now-familiar stars and stripes. This version of the flag had 13 stripes, representing the original 13 colonies, and a constellation of 20 stars. Each of the stars represented one of the 20 states then in the Union. The last star to be added to the American flag was the 50th, which was added in 1960. This version of the flag was also known as the "Ohio Flag" or the "Betsy Ross Flag" after Betsy Ross, the woman who is often credited with creating this design. We hope you enjoyed learning about the history of the United States flag. Thank you for listening.。
