ALL THE CABBIE HAD WAS A LETTERFoster FurcoloHe must have been completely lost in something he was reading because I had to tap on the windshield to get his attention.“Is your cab available?”I asked when he finally looked up at me. He nodded, then said apologetically as I settled into the back seat, “I 'm sorry, but I was reading a letter. He sounded as if he had a cold or something."I'm in no hurry,” I told him. “Go ahead and finish your letter.”He shook his head. “I 've read it several times already. I guess I almost know it by heart.”“Letters from home always mean a lot,” I said.“ At least they do with me because I 'm on the road so much. ” Then, estimating that he was 60 or 70 years old, I guessed: “From a child or maybe a grandchild?”“ This isn't family,”he replied. “Although,” he went on, “come to think of it, it might just as well have been family. Old Ed was my oldest friend. In fact, we used to call each other' Old Friend'—when we 'd meet, that is.I 'm not much of a hand at writing.”“I don't think any of us keep up our correspondence too well,” I said. “I know I don't.But I take it he's someone you 've known quite a while?”"All my life, p r actically. We were kids together, so we go way back.”“ Went to school together?”“All the way through high school. We were in the same class, in fact, through both grade and high school.” "There are not too many people who 've had such a long friend ship,” I said.“Actually,” the driver went on, “I hadn't seen him more than once or twice a year over the past 25 or 30 years because I moved away from the old neighborhood and you kind of lose touch even though you never forget. He was a great guy.”“You said 'was'. Does that mean—?"He nodded. “Died a c ouple of weeks ago.”“I 'm sorry,” I said. “It's no fun to lose any friend—and losing a real old one is even tougher. ”He didn't reply to that, and we rode on in silence for a few minutes. But I realized that Old Ed was still on his mind when he spoke again, almost more to himself than to me: "I should have kept in touch. Yes,” he repeated, “I should have kept in touch. ”“Well,” I agreed, “we should all keep in touch with old friends more than we do. But things come up and we just don't seem to find the tim e. ”He shrugged. “We used to find the time,” he said. “That's even mentioned in the letter. ” He handed it over to me. 'Take a look.”“Thanks,” I said, “but I don't want to read your mail. That's pretty personal.”The driver shrugged. “Old Ed 's dead. There's nothing personal now. Go ahead,” he urged me.The letter was written in pencil. It began with the greeting "Old Friend,” and the first sentence reminded me of myself. I 've been meaning to write for some time, but I 've always postponed it. It then went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together when they both lived in the same neighborhood. It had references to things that probably meant something to the driver, such as the time Tim Shea broke the window, the Halloween that we tied Old Mr. Parker 's gate, and when Mrs. Culver used to keep us after school.“You must have spent a lot of time together,” I said to him.“Like it says there,” he answered, “about all we had to spend in those days was time.”He shook his head: "Time.”I thought the next paragraph of the letter was a little sad: I began the letter with "Old Friend" because that's what we 've become over the years—old friends. And there aren't many of us left.“You know,” I said to him, “when it says here that there aren't many of us left, that's absolutely right. Every time I go to a class reunion, for example, there are fewer and fewer still around. ”"Time g oes by,” the driver said.“Did you two work at the same place?” I asked him.“No, but we hung out on the same corner when we were single. And then, when we were married, we used to go toeach other 's house every now and then. But for the last 20 or 30 years it 's been mostly just Christmas cards. Of course there 'd be always a note we 'd each add to the cards—usually some news about our families, you know, what the kids were doing, who moved where, a new grandchild, things like that—but never a real letter or anything like that. ”“This is a good part here,” I said. “Where i t says Your friendship over the years has meant an awful lot to me, more than I can say be cause I 'm not good at saying things like that. ” I found myself nodding in agreement. “That must have made you feel good, didn't it?”The driver said something that I couldn't understand because he seemed to be all choked up, so I continued: "I know I 'd like to receive a letter like that from my oldest friend.”We were getting close to our destination so I skipped to the last paragraph. So I thought you 'd like to know that I was thinking of you. And it was signed, Your Old Friend, Tom.I handed back the letter as we stopped at my hotel. “Enjoyed talking with you,” I said as I took my suitcase out of the cab. Tom? The letter was signed Tom?“I thought your friend 's name was Ed,” I said. “Why did he sign it Tom?'“The letter was not from Ed to me,” he explained. “I 'm Tom. It's a letter I wrote to him before I knew he 'd died. So I never mailed it.”He looked sort of sorrowful, or as if he were trying to see something in th e distance. “I guess I should have written it sooner.”When I got to my hotel room I didn't unpack right away. First I had to write a letter—and mail it.language studybe lost in/ lose oneself in:be absorbed in, be fully occupied with 专心致志于He was lost in playing computer games so he was unaware of my entering the room. She was lost in her novel.I had lost myself in thought.available:able to be used, had, or reached 可用的; 可得到的Since 1990, the amount of money available to buy books has fallen by 17%.If you don't want to buy a kite, you can make your own using directions available in the book.We have already used up all the available space.or something:used when you are not very sure about what you have just said 诸如此类的事The air fare was a hundred and ninety-nine pounds or something. Here's some money. When did people first begin to use stamps? Who was the first to think of this idea?In the early nineteenth century, people did not use stamps. They had to pay postage when they received letters. They were unhappy about this, especially when they paid for a letter which they did not wish to receive at all. The postage was high at that time, because the post offices had to send many people to collect the postage.Rowland Hill, a schoolmaster in England, was the first to put forward a proposal to use stamps. He thought it would be much easier for people to use stamps to cover postage. They could go to the nearby post office to buy stamps and put them on envelopes before they sent the letters. The post office could simply put seals on the stamps so that people could not use the stamps again. In this way, the post office did not need to send postmen to collect postage. It only needed to send fewer postmen to deliver letters. That was a good idea and the government finally accepted it.On May 6, 1840, post offices throughout England began to sell stamps. Soon this new postal system was taken up by other countries. Now each country has its own stamps. And there are many people who collect stamps all over the world.Work Sheet 1:Find the answers to the following questions from the passage:1. Why were people unhappy to pay postage for letters in the early nineteenth century?2. Why was it much easier for people to use stamps for postage?3. Why was the postage much lower using stamps?4. How could the post office prevent people from reusing the stamps?5. Did other countries take up the new postal system?6. Does every country in the world has its own stamps now?Work Sheet 2:Complete the dialogue with the information you have got: A: Oh, What a beautiful stamp!B: Yes, it's from the U.S.A..A: Do you know ____________________ people did not use stamps?B: Then how did they pay the postage?A: ___________________________________________________________.B: Was the postage very high then?A: ___________________________________________________________.B: Who put forward the proposal to use stamps?A: ___________________________________________________________.B: Why do post offices put seals on the stamps?A: ___________________________________________________________.B: When did post offices begin to sell stamps?A: ___________________________________________________________.B: Thank you for telling me so many things about stamps. 高中英语阅读教学教案2Module 7 Unit 4 SharingReading A Letter HomeⅠ.Teaching ContentsModule 7 Unit4 Sharing Reading: A Letter HomeII.Analysis of teaching material本单元的话题是Sharing,本课设计的这篇课文是一个志愿者的一封家书,她在巴布亚新几内亚共和国的一个小山村教书。

(2’ each)There are three kinds of goals; short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly months. It should be remembered that just as a building is not stronger than its foundation, our long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of the short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course ofaction.1. Our long-term goals mean a lot if we .A) complete our short-term goalsB) cannot reach solid short-term goalsC) write down the datesD) put forward some plants2. New short-term goals are built upon .A) two yearsB) long-term goalsC) current activitiesD) the goals that have been completed3. When we complete each step of our goals, .A) we will win final successB) we are overwhelmedC) we should build up confidence of successD) we have strong desire for setting new goals4. Once our goals are drawn up, .A) we should stick to them until we complete themB) we may change our goals as we have new ideas and opportunitiesC) we’d better wait for the exciting news of successD) we have made great decisions5. It is implied but not stated in the passage that .A) those who have long-term goals will succeedB) writing down the dates may discourage youC) the goal is only a guide for us to reach our destinationEvery artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose. Their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it.If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something, all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.6. An artist hopes that the public will .A) understand him and learn from himB) notice only shapes and colors in his workC) teach him somethingD) believe what he says in his work7. It’s hard to explain what a painter is saying, because .A) most painters do not express themselves wellB) a painter uses unusual words and phrasesC) a painter uses shapes and colors instead of wordsD) many painters do not say anything8. A painter chooses certain shapes and colors because he feels that they .A) have been used frequently in the pastB) are easy to work withC) are worth showing to the publicD) will be most attractive to the public9. The writer says that contemporary artists might say their choice of subject .A) carries a message to the publicB) only provides interesting patternsC) has no pattern or formD) teaches the public important truths10. Implied but not stated: .A) A painting is more easily understood than a symphony.B) Art is merely the arranging of shape and color.C) Every artist tries to say something to the public.D) One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artist is saying.Part V. ”"Time g oes by,” the driver said.“Did you two work at the same place?” I asked h im.“No, but we hung out on the same corner when we were single. And then, when we were married, we used to go to each other 's house every now and then. “Where it says Your friendship over the years has meant an awful lot to me, more than I can say be cause I 'm not good at saying things like that. So I never ma iled it.”He looked sort of sorrowful, or as if he were tryi ng to see something in the distance. It is not only a great way to improve reading skills but also has a positive impact on memory, concentration, and language development.B) One of the main benefits of reading aloud is that it helps improve reading fluency. When we read aloud, we are forced to slow down and pay more attention to the words, which helps us become more familiar with the text. This, in turn, improves our reading speed and accuracy over time.C) Reading aloud also has a significant impact on memory. When we read something aloud, we engage more of our senses, including our ears and our vocal cords. This multisensory approach helps to encode the information more deeply in our memory, making it easier to recall later.D) Another advantage of reading aloud is that it can improve concentration. In a world full of distractions, reading aloud requires us to focus on the text in front of us. By blocking out other distractions and concentrating on the words, we are training our minds to stay focused for longer periods of time.E) Reading aloud is also beneficial for language development. It helps us to improve our pronunciation, intonation, and vocabulary. When we read aloud, we can hear how words are pronounced correctly, and we can also learn new words and their meanings in context.F) For children, reading aloud is especially important. It is a great way to introduce them to the joys of reading and to help them develop a love for books. Reading aloud to children also helps to improve their language skills, as they are exposed to new words and sentence structures at an early age.G) In addition to the above benefits, reading aloud can also be a formof stress relief. It allows us to relax and unwind while engaging in a simple and enjoyable activity.H) To get the most out of reading aloud, it is important to choose the right material. For example, if you are trying to improve your language skills, you may want to choose a book or article that is slightly aboveyour current reading level. If you are looking for stress relief, you may prefer something more light - hearted and relaxing.I) It is also important to read aloud regularly. Just like any other skill, the more you practice reading aloud, the better you will become. Try to set aside a specific time each day for reading aloud, whether it is in the morning, during your lunch break, or in the evening.J) In conclusion, reading aloud is a simple yet powerful activity that has many benefits.
