That was the news this week from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The downturn is the longest since a depression that began in 1981 and lasted sixteen months.Economists generally wait for production to shrink for six months in a row before they declare a recession. But the bureau, a private group, uses a wider set of information to measure the economy. The news only confirmed what many people already knew: that the world's largest economy is weak and may not recover soon.Worsening conditions have led to a big drop in spending, especially on costly products like new cars. Congressional leaders denounced (指责) them two weeks ago after they came in private jets with no clear plans for saving their industry. The request for aid has risen from twentyfive billion dollars two weeks ago to thirtyfour billion in loans and credit lines.G.M. wants almost half of that, and says it needs four billion dollars this month. It warned that without support it cannot continue to operate.Ford is in a better position. But the sharing of suppliers means it could be affected if G.M. or Chrysler fails. Ford is asking for a nine billion dollar credit line in case it needs it.Chrysler is the smallest and most trouble of America's Big Three. It says it needs a seven billion dollar loan by the end of the month. Two days of congressional hearings began Thursday in the Senate Banking Committee. The chairman, Democrat Chris Dodd, said he would support helping the automakers for the good of the economy. But the committee's top Republican, Richard Shelby, continued to express opposition to a bailout (财政援助).A main root of the world financial crisis is the weak housing market in the United States. She planned to study biology and chemistry in college and become a pediatrician. Instead, Gbowee writes in her autobiography, Mighty Be Our Po w ers, within six months of that party in 1989, everything around her was gone — her country torn apart by civil war, her family broken, her plans abandoned. And Gbowee never became a doctor. Gbowee saw civilians murdered before her eyes. She fled with relatives from one shelter to another, often went hungry. Upon returning to Liberia in 1991, she saw a terrible sight: everyone had fled, leaving their homes to the fighters.Yet her spirit wouldn't die. She began studying under a UNICEF program. Finally, with her family's help, she imagined a movement of women demanding peace in Liberia and made it happen. Traveling from village to village, Gbowee began organizing women and persuaded women of different cultures to unite; under her leadership, thousands of women were dressed all in white to symbolize peace. Gbowee writes:“We were silent before, but after so many of us have been killed, fallen with diseases, and lost our children and families, war has taught us that the future lies in saying no to violence and yes to peace!”The women had reason to fear, but Gbowee had no choice. Then women could register to vote. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa's first female president in 2005. Gbowee's work was just beginning. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is really worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in distant areas away from any industrial cities. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentrationof carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burningof fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouseeffect〞—keeping heat reflected from the earth and raisingthe world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen. Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people ignore the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization〞. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?1.People used to think that air pollution ________.A.caused widespread damage in the countrysideB.affected the entire eastern half of the United StatesC.had a very bad effect on healthD.existed merely in urban and industrial areas2.As to the greenhouse effect, the author ________.A.shares the same view with the scientistsB.is uncertain of its occurrenceC.rejects it as being ungroundedD.thinks that it will destroy the world soon3.The underlined word“offset〞in the second paragraph could be replaced by ________.A.counteract B.break fromC.get along D.communicate4.If the world's temperature lowered just a few degrees ________.A.it would not do much harm to life on earthB.it would lead major farming areas to disasterC.particular things would increase greatly in the atmosphereD.seas and oceans would flood many cities5.This passage is primarily about ________.A.the greenhouse effectB.the burning of fossil fuelsC.the potential effect of air pollutionD.the possibility of a new ice ageB(2013·绍兴高三模拟)A group of eight public high school students in Massachusetts, aged 15 to 17, designed and ran their own school within a school. They named their practice the Independent Project. They represented the usual range: two were close to dropping out before they started the project, while others were honors students.Their guidance teacher was their adviser, consulting with them when the group encountered difficulties. Though they sought advice from English, math and science teachers, they were responsible for monitoring one another's work and giving oneanother feedback. There were no grades, but at the end of the term, the students wrote evaluations of their classmates. The students also designed their own course. In addition to some regular courses, they each took on an “individual project〞, learning to play the piano or to cook, writing a novel or making a video about domestic (国内的) violence. At the end of the term, they performed their new skills in front of the entire school. The last part of their selfdesigned course was to do a “collective project〞that had social significance. Because they felt the whole experience had been so lifechanging, they ended up making a film showing how other students could start and run their own schools. The project was a success. After returning to their traditional study, the students have high motivation and are doing well. One student who had failed all of his previous math courses spent three weeks teaching the others about probability. The lesson learned here is that if students are given the opportunity to take control or contribute significantly to their own learning they will become more accomplished, more engaged and more knowledgeable. The students in the project are remarkable because they demonstrate the kinds of learning and personal growth that are possible when teenagers feel ownership of their high school experience, learn things that matter to them and learn together.6.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Some students might drop out of high school.B.The teachers monitored the students' homework.C.The students themselves solved all their problems.D.The teachers evaluate the students' performances.7.The students involved in the Independent Project ________.A.didn't need to learn common lessonsB.tended to escape from the whole societyC.were unwilling to share their experiencesD.focused on selfstudy and working together8.According to Paragraph 4, we know that ________.A.the traditional study is better than the projectB.all the students had failed their math coursesC.the students have freedom to design their lessonsD.the project was mainly concerned with math courses9.The project made the students outstanding because ________.A.they are unusually talentedB.they have better backgroundsC.they have supportive teachersD.they are owners of their education10.What would be the best title of the text?A.Structure the Kids' Days to the MinuteB.Let Kids Rule Their Own School Within a SchoolC.Offer Students Few Opportunities to Do AnythingD.Provide Traditional Education to the Students答案课时跟踪检测(二十五)Ⅰ.1.选D 考查交际用语。

Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious testtakers.Sian Beilock:“They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into thecollege they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive (认知的) horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious testtakers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.Sian Beilock:“What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it's not as bad as they might think it was before and, in essence, it prevents these thoughts from popping_up when they're actually taking a test.”The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B +, compared to a B - for those who did not.Sian Beilock:“What we showed is that for students who are highly testanxious, who'd done our writing intervention, all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most prone to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations.”But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? The wood, which is tapered (使成锥形) on one side in a way that looks deliberate, may provide important clues to a mysterious period in North Americanprehistory.“This was the stage when humans gradually shifted from hunting large animals to fishing, gathering and agriculture,” said anthropologist John O'Shea. “But because most of the places in this area that prehistoric people lived in are now under water, we don't have good evidence of this important shift itself. We just have clues from before and after the change.”With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), O'Shea and his colleague Guy Meadows began exploring the area several years ago. In 2009 they reported finding a series of stone features that they believe were “drive lanes” used by ancient Indian hunters.Since that discovery, O'Shea and Meadows have worked on identifying human campsites, which are typically located away from hunting areas. On their 25-foot boat, the researchers first spotted the ancient wood object using a small piece of equipment with a camera. Then a team of divers — including O'Shea — went down about 100 feet to get it.The wood's age has now been fixed by means of carbon dating. It is currently undergoing more detailed analyses to determine whether there has been human modification, which visual examination suggests. “The first thing you notice is that it appears to have been shaped with a rounded base and a pointed tip,” O'Shea said. “It must have been created. It looks like it might have been used as a tent pole or a pole to hang meat.”In addition to the wood, the researchers have collected many other samples from the bottom of the lake. O'Shea and his colleagues will need to wait for calmer weather before they can resume their search for evidence of human life under the great lake.1.During the mysterious period mentioned in the passage, the Lake Huron area ________.A.was deserted by ancient IndiansB.witnessed the start of agricultureC.was taken up by large animalsD.began to be covered by water2.Which of the following statements is WRONG?A.The findings of John O'Shea and his colleagues may prove a previous theory.B.The effort that John O'Shea and Meadows made before 2010 was meaningless.C.Some equipment was used to support the discovery.D.John O'Shea and his colleagues didn't draw the final conclusion from visual examination.3.What's the fourth paragraph mainly about?A.How the wood was found.B.Why the wood is important.C.Preparations that were made for the discovery of the wood.D.Conclusions the experts have made from the discovery of the wood.4.According to the passage, ________.A.experts haven't found out the age of the woodB.experts first noticed the wood when they were divingC.the wood was probably a human-made toolD.the wood is the most important discovery among all the samples found under the lake 5.What do we know about the future plan of John O'Shea and his colleagues?A.They will explore another lake soon.B.They will study the weather around Lake Huron.C.They will have a long holiday before going back to work.D.They will continue to explore Lake Huron.Ⅲ.书面表达(2013·泰安高三一模)教育局将每年的9月10日定为爱心慈善日(Charity Day),今年活动的主题是“人人为贫困孩子献爱心”。

It would then join a wild flock and chatter away in the trees, its words being learned by younger birds in the flock. The older ones would be unlikely to start learning. When chicks are born, they hear the words being spoken by the older birds and grow up repeating the phrases. And so it continues, generation after generation.Mr. Robinson said that because of a drought in the western regions of New South Wales, flocks of wild bird “speakers〞 among them have been flying to Sydney, where more food is available, and have been hanging around suburban gardens. From the tree tops in gardens, from chimney pots and lamp posts, the flocks have been talking away, leaving many people wondering if their minds were playing tricks on them.“These birds are very smart and very social, meaning that communication and contact is important between them,〞said Mr. Robinson. “I just hope a pet bird that's been taught dirty words doesn't join a flock because we don't want to hear that kind of thing going around the back gardens.〞1.When people heard a flock of birds say “Hello there!〞, they felt ________.A.there was something wrong with their mindsB.they had drunk some wineC.they were in a world of parrotsD.they heard people speaking2.Flocks of wild bird “speakers〞 have been flying to Sydney because ________.A.they are following some escaped pet parrotsB.it is easy for them to find food in SydneyC.there are fewer birds left in New South WalesD.they are on their way of migration3.Which of the following gives the correct order of events given in the passage?a.People hear a bird in a tree say “Hello there!〞.b.The pet parrot escaped from its cage.c.A flock of wild p arrots learned to speak from the escaped “speaker〞.d.A pet parrot picked up some sentences from its owner.e.The pet parrot joined a flock of wild birds.A.b, c, d, a, e B.e, a, c, d, bC.d, b, e, c, a D.e, b, c, a, d4.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.parrots like to learn to speak human languageB.younger birds are most likely to learn the language from the escaped parrots C.parrots can learn to speak from each other, whether old or youngD.parrots flock together because they speak the same language5.What Mr. Robinson said in the last paragraph suggests that ________.A.a flock of parrots can only pick up some simple sentencesB.parrots cannot learn to say dirty wordsC.parrots can even pick up dirty wordsD.a pet parrot is forbidden to be taught dirty wordsⅢ.书面表达(2013·烟台高三一模)2012年伦敦奥运会已经完毕,我国体育健儿取得了骄人的成绩,请以“What makes an outstanding athlete?〞为题,并根据以下所提示的信息写一篇英语短文,内容要点如下:1.你觉得一名优秀的运动员应具备的最重要的1~2个品质是什么,如坚决的意志、健康的体魄、突出的技巧等;2.以你所熟悉或喜爱的运动员为例适当展开说明主题;3.这种品质对你有何影响。

But it's not so good for the tongue. Unfortunately for the USsoldiers of World War Ⅱ,the chocolate bars the army gave themtasted like they were intended for use in the bath.In the army's defense, it wasn't trying to win any cooking awards. In fact, it specifically ordered that its chocolate bars not be too delicious, so soldiers wouldn't eat them too quickly. These bars were created for survival, not taste. “They were awful,” John Otto, a former army captain in World War Ⅱ said. “They were big, thick things, and they weren't any good. I tried them, but I had to be awful hungry after I tried them once.”As unappealing as the chocolate bars were to some, others liked them. Samuel Hinkle, the chemist who created the chocolate bars, pointed out that the number of bars made were far greater than the army needed. “It soon became obvious that the generous American soldiers were sharing their valued possessions with their foreign friends, whether soldiers of other countries or local citizens.”The bars turned many hungry Europeans into friends of the United States. “People wanted them,” said Otto. “You'd give them to kids. In some places they were very hungry. And they sure helped relax people about American soldiers.”Otto said he never saw a European turn_his_or_her_nose_up_at the chocolate. “It was food,” he said.“At that time, ever yone was very hungry. I saw German kids standing outside the U. S. army kitchen. They weren't begging, just standing there very politely. When we were done, the kids would eat the food out of the garbage. They were that hungry.”Other Europeans did not see chocolate until well after the war ended. “We didn't see any Americans where I was,”said Elizabeth Radsma, who was 25 years old when the Germans occupied her country, the Netherlands. “Even after the war, we saw only English. Maybe the Americans gave out some chocolate in the big cities, but we were only in a small town. Before the British, we saw only German soldiers. But chocolate? Don't make me laugh! Maybe in my dreams!”A soldier in the field might have responded “Be careful what you wish for”—and then gratefully bit on a chocolate bar, the only food available for miles.1.What was the American soldiers' attitude towards the chocolate bars?A.They were delicious.B.They tasted awful.C.They were necessary for survival.D.Too many of them were produced.2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.The US soldiers used the chocolate bars as bath soap.B.The US soldiers did not have enough food during World War Ⅱ.C.The US army produced more chocolate bars than necessary for its soldiers.D.European people regretted eating chocolate bars from the US soldiers.3.The underlined expression “turn his or her nose up at” probably means ________.A.reject B.demandC.receive D.smell4.Why does the author mention the German kids' story?A.To tell how friendly the American soldiers were.B.To describe the hunger in Germany during the war.C.To prove German kids could be very polite.D.To show how much they were eager for chocolate.5.Elizabeth Radsma never saw chocolate during the war because ________.A.the US soldiers handed out all chocolate to people in big citiesB.the German soldiers kept them all for themselvesC.the British soldiers didn't share it with the local peopleD.the US soldiers never showed up in the small town she lived inⅢ.阅读表达(2013·山东省淄博一中高三阶段性检测)[1]We had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to pour heavily. When it became lighter, I decided to brave the small rain to get my car which was parked at my office three streets away.[2] My friends argued that I shouldn't go, mainly because I was seven months pregnant then.I assured them that I'd be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me but I insisted that she stayed with another friend who needed help with her baby.[3] I walked out of the hotel and started making my way to the car. At the traffic crossroads, a van stopped and the passenger got off with an umbrella. Before I knew what was happening, he walked right beside me and told me he'd help me to my destination. I was very embarrassed and declined, but he was very insistent.[4] During our walk, he kept telling me to walk slower, as the ground was wet. When we got to the car-park, I thanked him and we parted ways. I did not get his name and may not even recognise him now. Did he purposely stop for me? I'll never know.[5]So how did I pay it forward? I was at home when I noticed two Indian construction workers walking in the heavy rain. They were probably ________ to the construction site near my residence, which was a long walk. I went out and passed them an umbrella. They were taken aback by my gesture, and I told them they should take the umbrella and keep it.

cheat“欺骗”;hide“躲藏”;recognize “认出”。

4.选B suffer from“遭受……之苦”。

由主句的时态和逻辑推理,第二个空格应为before。

此题易被误认为是not ...until句式。

5.选B考查冠词。

句意:经过连续几次的失败,他最终通过了驾驶考试。

a series of 是固定短语,意为“一系列;一连串”,所以第一个空用不定冠词a;第二个空用定冠词the,特指驾驶考试。

6.选B考查动词辨析。

此处表示“从疾病中恢复过来”,因此使用recover“恢复”。

suffer“遭受”;discover“发现”;return“返回”。

7.选C考查形容词词义辨析。

句意:目前,政府在为经济危机制定政策时必须要十分小心,确保政策正确时才能作出决定。

particular“尤其;特别”;concerned“有关的;关心的”;cautious“小心的;谨慎的”;alternative“可选择的”。

8.选C考查副词辨析。

entirely “完全地”,符合句意。

strongly “强烈地”;freely “自由地”;extremely “极端地;极其;非常”。

Scientists at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, US, announced on February 27that rich people are more likely to do unethical (不道德的) things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online inthe Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS, 《美国国家科学院院刊》).They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving more modest (不豪华的) cars.In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do unethical things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher-class families were more likely to act dishonestly.According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people's feelings. Finally, it simply makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self-interest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy (不能信赖的) or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts and values in different ways.1.By saying “money is the root of all evil”,the author wants to ________.A.draw readers' attention to the researchB.link wealth with bad behaviorC.show how the saying proves the findingsD.defend rich people who do unethical things2.Which of the following is TRUE about the experiments the scientists did, according to the scientist quoted?A.Most wealthy people are not trustworthy.B.The findings were not persuasive enough and the scientists will do further experiments.C.Drivers of more expensive cars are more likely to break traffic rules.D.Students from poorer families are not as honest as students from richer families.3.What makes rich people unethical according to the scientists?a.they become more selfishb.they have more desiresc.they believe money talksd.they welcome risksA.ab B.abdC.bc D.abc4.Why did the scientists do the experiments?A.To show how social status affects people's ethics.B.To show people's instincts and values in different ways.C.To test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true.D.To show the difference between higher-class people and lower-class people.5.What does the article really want to show us?A.Money is the root of all evil.B.There are more chances for the rich to act unethically.C.The saying is reasonable.D.All rich people are untrustworthy.Ⅲ.书面表达假如你是李明,你通过网络得知野生动物保护组织(WCS)现在正招募志愿者,你希望成为其中一员。

Yellowstone is believed to have been the world's first national park when it was established in 1872. To make it a popular website, there are a few general guidelines you should follow to increase your chances of success.[2] Write about what you know, and stick to one topic for a while. If_you_write_without_checking_facts_or_with_no_experience_behind_your_articles, _people_won't_believe_it_and_won't_come_back_to_your_site. Similarly, if you write about too many different topics, you won't be able to build up an audience of readers easily.[3] The first thing students are taught as early as grade school about evaluating websites is that if there are a bunch of grammatical errors, the website probably isn't credible (可信的). This means that you need to check every single post you write before you put it up on your site. It's a good idea to write something, leave it sit for a while, and then come back to read it over before you post it. This gives you fresh eyes to catch mistakes.[4] Keeping a schedule of posts can help you not disappoint your readers, because they will start to come back to your site regularly to see what's new. It's a good idea to set a goal for yourself and keep it, which is important to keep your readers coming back for more.[5] Knowing how search engines like Google or Bing find your site can help your posts show up higher on Internet searches and, therefore, get you more clicks to your site.[6] Websites now are so advanced in their graphic design that the way a website looks can point to its credibility just as much as being errorfree. We can also term it as “self-raising”. In slow parenting children are allowed to do what they think proper and parents just keep a watch over the child. Curiosity of the child leads to exploring and discovering things. Parents provide little help only when it's too necessary, otherwise keep themselves away from the child and just have a look on him/her. This brings about a feeling of self-dependency and they are encouraged to solve their problems. This is a natural way of learning. When a child is left to learn in anatural environment, the child's natural development takes place.Influence of any materialistic way doesn't let the mind develop naturally.Watching TV, playing video games or joining classes of dance, swimmingor any other sports will not let the mind develop naturally. Here creativity of their mind is developed. They explore ideas. The logic behind this is that the kids of animals learn by nature, so can our kids. So let our children play in the garden, towatch flowers, plants, birds, butterflies and other gifts of nature. In the classes of dance, swimming etc. their creativity is influenced and their natural creativity is suppressed. In these classes they are overburdened and can't enhance their creativity. So let them play in the open air or garden without any burden instead of joining classes.Generally parents give toys to their children and explain how to operate them. But those parents who believe in slow parenting give toys and observe how the children are managing them. Their skill to learn and understand comes out. Maybe the process is slow, but it will be their exploration, which will make them self-dependent, and self-capable to learn.1.In slow parenting, parents________.A.give the whole directions to what their children doB.keep a close watch over their childrenC.give their children freedom to do what they think properD.set limits to what their children do2.What is the main advantage of slow parenting according to the passage?A.Keeping children away from materialistic influence.B.Arousing children's curiosity.C.Making children interested in exploring nature.D.Helping children to be independent.3.We can infer from the third paragraph that________.A.exploring nature is a good way of slow parentingB.children can't learn by nature like the kids of animalsC.slow parenting should be done in a logical wayD.children should join some classes4.The author believes joining various classes________.A.can train children's ability of solving problemsB.is no good to children's creativityC.is a necessary part of slow parentingD.also helps improve children's creativity5.What is the passage mainly about?A.Different parenting styles.B.The requirements of slow parenting.C.Slow parenting and its advantages.D.The author's attitude towards slow parenting.答案课时跟踪检测(三十六)Ⅰ.1.选D考查情景对话。

I worked as a part-time secretary for one day in the office there. Scary? Terrifying? Those boys were rough, tough and mean and there was no order at all — they made trouble at will. A year later, I heard that Max had taken over; I pitied him for having a job in hell. The following Christmas, Max was on local TV offering food baskets. Today, under guidance from Max and the organization he founded, they are welcomed contributors to the community. He sees the same hardships that we all do, but he figures out ways for everybody to help everybody else.Max turned a job in hell into positive community change. The number of courtissued punishment notices went up by 12% to 7,793 last year. The Department for Children, Schools and Families said that part of the rise was due to a ban on parents taking their child out of school during term time to go on holiday. The Labour government has a target to cut truancy (逃学) by a third, but the current rate of unauthorised absence in England is a third higher than in 2001.The government has introduced tough new permission to force parents to deal with their child's truancy. Parents can be fined, asked to sign contracts, or ordered to make their child go to school. Finally they can be sent to prison. The first parent to be put in prison was Patricia Amos, from Banbury, Oxfordshire, in 2006. Separate figures from the Ministry of Justice today show that 133 parents were put in prison between 2004 and 2011 for failing to prevent their child's truancy.Children's Minister Delyth Morgan said, “It's important that we back schools and local authorities in using these powers to deal with problem pupils and bad behaviour. They rightly make parents take responsibility for their children. These latest figures show that schools and local authorities continue to make good use of these measures.〞David Laws, the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, said, “While parents need to take responsibility for their children's behaviour and have the duty to ensure they attend school, truancy rates across the country remain sky high. What is needed is a more effective local approach involving parents, schools and the police. Extramoney to cut class sizes and provide more onetoone support will enable teachers to work with individual children and make sure that they are occupied in the classroom.〞1.Parenting contracts are signed to ________.A.remind parents to help their child with his homeworkB.make parents accompany their child to schoolC.keep children safe on the way to schoolD.ensure children attend school2.The worst punishment parents can be faced with is ________.A.to be finedB.to be put into prisonC.to sign a contractD.to lose the right to raise children3.The underlined word “back〞in Paragraph 4 probably means “________〞.A.adjust B.limitC.oppose D.support4.We know from the passage that ________.A.the government's approach has had little effect on children's truancy B.the government should take tougher measures against parentsC.the number of parents sent to prison has reducedD.schools and local authorities misuse the measures5.In David Laws' opinion, ________.A.only schools are responsible for children's behaviourB.schools have got less support from the governmentC.parents, schools and the police are to blame for children's truancyD.more effective measures should be taken to prevent children's truancyB(2012·济宁二模)Bollywood dance is fun, a great workout and an important contributing factor towards the international popularity of Bollywood films. Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious test-takers.Sian Beilock:“They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive (认知的) horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.Sian Beilock:“What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it's not asbad as they might think it was before and, in essence, it prevents these thoughts from popping_up when they're actually taking a test.”The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B +,compared to a B -for those who did not.Sian Beilock:“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention, all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most prone to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations.”But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.1.What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety?A.Test anxiety can improve students' performance to some degree.B.Students' attention and memory resources run out when worried.C.Students may not be admitted into their favorite college if worried.D.Test anxiety is sure to cause students to fail the test.2.Which of the following is TRUE?A.In the first math test, students who sat quietly performed better.B.In the second math test, students who wrote about their feelings did worse.C.Some college students are highly anxious test-takers while others are not in the tests.D.The result in the math test agrees with that in the biology test.3.What does the underlined phrase “popping up” mean?A.Appearing suddenly.B.Fading away.C.Becoming clearly.
