濒危动物是指所有由于物种自身的原因或受到人类活动或的影响,而有危险的野生动物物种。
从广义上讲,濒危动物泛指珍贵、濒危或稀有的。
从野生动物管理学角度讲,濒危动物是指《》附录所列动物,以及国家和地方重点保护的野生动物。
濒危动物具有绝对性和相对性。
绝对性是指濒危动物在相当长的一个时期内野生种群数量较少,存在灭绝的危险。
相对性是指某些濒危动物野生种群的绝对数量并不太少,但相对于同一类别的其他动物物种来说却很少;或者某些濒危动物虽然在局部地区的野生种群数量很多,但在整个分布区内的野生种群数量却很少。

一些种类的濒危动物在得到了有效保护、其野生种群数量明显上升、不再有灭绝危险时,也可以退出濒危动物的行列。
