Humans put a heavy pressure on nature, from exploitation(开采)of resources to habitat destruction. It turns out that we're having a bad effect. We're driving other mammals(哺乳动物)to conduct their activities during the night in an effort to avoid humans.A study published by Science found that, on average, mammals across the world have become 1.36 times more active during the night than they've previously been in the past. Translated into percentages, animals that used to divide their activities between day and night have increased their nighttime activities by 68 percent.Gaynor and her colleagues first noticed this phenomenon of the mammals in the research they conducted in Tanzania, Nepal and Canada when they observed that animals in each country were more active at night when they were around people. To determine what kind of effect it was having on themselves, Gaynor's team conducted an analysis, which was a review of previously published studies and reports that contained information in the 24-hour activity patterns of large mammals. These observations of animal behavior were collected using "remote control cameras, GPS and radio collars and direct observation," along with other methods.Additionally, Gaynor explains in a piece for The Conversation about the study that the researchers relied on studies that tracked a variety of behaviors, like "deer activity in and out of the hunting season, bear activity in areas with and without hiking and elephant activity inside protected areas and outside among, rural settlement." Using some data, Gaynor and her team determined the degree to which each species performed activities during the night and factored in whether there was a high or low amount of human disturbance. Finally, 62 species across six continents were tracked in the study, and the results consistently showed an increase in animal activity at night. These changes in habitat were consistent regardless of the type of disturbance. So whether it was hiking or hunting or farming, the very presence of humans resulted in changes in the animals' night behaviors.(1)Why are some animals active during the night?A: To enjoy the nature more freely.B: To search for a new kind of lifestyle.C: To hunt for more food on the farm.D: To get away from the trouble caused by humans.(2)How is Paragraph 2 organized?A: Listing figures.B: Giving examples.C: Making a comparison.D: Analyzing the process.(3)What did Gaynor want to find out according to Paragraph 3?A: How people influenced the animals.B: Whether the previous discovery was true.C: What effects animals' night activities had on themselves.D: How the animals adapted to the life around humans.(4)What led to the changes in the animals' night behaviors?A: The research Gaynor and her team did.B: The existence of humans' activities.C: The changes in their living space.D: The evolution of the mammals themselves.【答案】DACB【解答】(1)D 目的意图题。

①It is the first time _____ she has been in Shanghai.②It was the time _____ Chinese people had a hard life. It is/was the first/second ... time +that从句。

Before I tried the great escape, the wooden door suddenly opened to the singsong voice of Mrs Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher."We've been waiting on you!" she said in an unusually high voice. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left standing in the center stage in front of a group of students.Over the next few days, Mrs Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend and help me join a choir(合唱队). During history lessons, as I didn't want to speak in front of the class she would not only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates. She laughed at my nervousness when I wouldn't get in line to sharpen my pencil for fear of being embarrassed. Her silliness made me smile and finally feel much more relaxed in the new environment. One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class."I'd like to speak with you, Amanda."My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone's feelings?"Are you enjoying your new school?" She sat comfortably behind her desk."I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.""Okay." My throat all of a sudden felt very dry. With her eyebrows raised she said, "I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show—I think you have great potential(潜能)to be something very important."I listened attentively to every word."I've been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That's very important. Remember that and you'll go far."She then hugged me and said, "See you tomorrow."Her singsong voice was music to my ears that day.

表示因果关系的连词有as a result结果,thus/therefore因此,so (such)...

表示转折关系的连接词有:However然而, nevertheless仍然,然而,不过, nonetheless尽管如此,依然,然而, still还;然而, though可是,不过,然而, yet然而, in spite of不顾,不管, at any rate无论如何,至少, in any case无论如何,不管怎样, whoever无论是谁, whatever无论什么,on the contrary正相反, in contrast与此相反, 相比之下, by contrast相反, 相比之下, in comparison比较起来,比较地, by comparison相比之下, conversely相反(地), otherwise否则;除此以外,not---but不是-----而是,as well也等。

In July last year, the six-time speed reading champion Anne Jones sat down to read Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. Just 25 minutes and 31 seconds later, she finished it —which equals a reading rate of around 3,700 words per minute. Jones runs training courses teaching speed reading, recall and concentration techniques and there are numerous speed reading apps that have appeared on the market over the past few years. But do they actually work?First, we need to understand how we read. The human eye movement system is central to our reading ability. Read over that sentence again, and think about how your eyes scan across the words. They don’t move smoothly over them. Instead, they make a series of short, sharp jumps, skipping over a few characters before briefly landing on a word. The movements are known as saccades (扫视) and the pauses are called fixations.Reading isn’t just about seeing the words — you need to comprehend them to build up a picture about what the text means. People are able to get through a block of text faster, but at the cost of accuracy and understanding. In other words, if you use a speed reading app, then you’ll probably get the gist (主旨) of a piece of text, but you’ll struggle to recall details about what you’ve just read. So, does speed reading work? Well, yes and no. It really depends on what you’re reading and why you need to read it. As yet, there isn’t a trick that enables you to read a piece of text both quickly and accurately — there’s always going to be a trade-off.1.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Speed reading is bad at times.B.Speed reading is a waste of time.C.Speed reading can work sometimes.D.Speed reading is always enjoyable.2.What can we know from the passage?A.Reading apps ensure we read much faster.B.Fast reading makes us learn more knowledge.C.Reading is no more than seeing the text words.D.Reading ability is related to the eye movement system.3.What does the underlined word “trade-off” most probably mean in the last paragraph?A.Balance.B.Change.C.Business. D.Bargain.4.What might the writer continue to talk about?A.The advantages of faster or slower reading.B.The reasons why to do faster or slower reading.C.The cases where to do faster and slower reading.D.The methods for making use of faster or slower reading.BA large-scale study has found a link between eating a diet based on organic food and having a reduced risk of cancer. If the new results are confirmed, promoting organic food consumption could be a promising preventative strategy against the disease, a team of researchers from several French institutions said.Among the environmental risks for cancer, there are growing concerns about exposure to different types of pesticides (杀虫剂) from farming. The impact of such chemicals on the human body is still not well understood but there are some indications that harmful effects can occur even at low concentrations.Meanwhile, pushed by environmental and health concerns, the organic food market continues to grow rapidly. Organic food is produced without the use of synthetic (合成的) fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, and the use of veterinary (兽医的) medications.“Organic food is less likely to contain pesticide remains than conventional food, and studies have shown that an organic diet reduces exposure to certain pesticide,”Julia Baudry, the lead author of the study from the Center of Research in Epidemiology and Statistics in France, told Ne w s w eek.“In the general population, the primary route of e xposure is diet, especially intake of conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. However, few studies have examined the association of organic food consumption with cancer risk.”For the study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, a team of researchers examined data on the organic food consumption frequency and dietary intake of 68,946 French adults collected by an ongoing survey which began in 2009. They then followed up on these people at various points in the future.Participants reported how often (never, occasionally or most of the time) they consumed 16 types of organic food including fruits, vegetables, soy-based products, dairy products, meat and fish, eggs, grains and legumes, bread and cereals, flour, vegetable oil and condiments, ready-to-eat meals, coffee, tea, and herbal tea, wine, biscuits, chocolate, sugar and so on.5.What is the finding of the study?A.Processed food consumption may lead to an increased risk of cancer.B.Promoting organic food consumption may help to prevent diseases.C.Organic food consumption can help cure cancer in a short time.D.Eating a diet based on organic food may lead to the risk of cancer.6.Why is organic food becoming popular nowadays?A.Organic food can cure diseases.B.Organic food market continues to grow rapidly.C.People care about environment and health issues.D.Organic food is produced in a clean environment.7.Which of the following is the advantage of organic food?A.Organic food never contains harmful pesticide remains.B.Organic food is less likely to be exposed to some pesticides.C.Different types of pesticides won’t affect organic food.D.Organic food won’t be influenced by outside environment.8.What might the article go on describing after the last paragraph?A.The researching process of the study.B.The disadvantages of organic food.C.The bright future of organic food.D.Other researches on organic food.CHumans and elephants don't always get along. In Africa and Asia, elephants damage infrastructure, farmers' crops, and natural habitat critical for other species. If an elephant becomes a problem, humans may kill it. So local people and conservationists are trying to find better ways to keep elephants away from sensitive places. Now, researchers think they have a good tool to stop elephants; honeybee pheromones(信息素). "Elephants hate being stung in the trunk, so it's an extremely sensitive organ. Imagine being stung in your nose by a bee, and multiply that a few thousand times," said Mark Wright, a professor of entomology(昆虫学)at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.Kenyan farmers have long known that if they hang live beehives around their farms: they will repel elephants, "The problem is logistical, how do you manage hundreds of thousands of hives, if you have a huge area to protect? And then the idea came up to look at the alarm pheromones, which are chemicals that the bees release to launch an attack on something that's damaging the hive," Because elephants have a highly developed sense of smell, Wrightand his team thought they might be able to use the bees' chemical alarm signal to affect elephant behavior. So the researchers tested out a synthetic blend of chemicals that imitates honey bees' alarm pheromones. In Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa, the team hung white socks treated with the synthetic mixture as well as untreated control socks around an elephant watering hole, and then observed the animals' behavior."Elephants are really curious organisms, they'll walk along and see something like a sock hanging on a branch in the environment, and they'll inspect it, and if it's not treated with the alarm pheromones, they'll pick it up, throw it around, try to taste it, things like that. And in the case of the treated ones, we found that they would show immediate signs of unease or uncertainty, and they'd eventually back off from them. Very seldom would they go to pick them up and play with them," The study is in the journal Current Biology.1.To prevent elephants from becoming a problem, the researchers willA. kill themB. scare them awayC. apply honeybee pheromonesD. restore a new ecosystem2.If we need to protect an area on a large scale, the method of the Kenyan farmers isA. scientificB. flexibleC. awesomeD. impractical3.Why did the researcher conduct the study?A. To confirm what they thought.B. To attract the elephants' attention.C. To preserve the elephants' habitat.D. To test out honeybee's alarm pheromones.4.What does the author intend to mention in the following paragraph?A. Add some background information.B. Summarize the previous paragraphs.C. Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossing to keep them updated about where their books have been found. Bruce Peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟). In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海滩), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship. The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott’s last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.33.
