Farewell My Concubine
Farewell My Concubine
The opera Farewell My Concubine, made by Mei Lanfang, tells a historical story: At the end of Qin dynasty, Chu and Han had a fight. Han’s king ordered Li Zuoche to defraud Xiang Yu, trapping Xiang Yu in the GaiXia. Xiang Yu couldn’t make a breakthrough, and heard Chu song from all sides. He suspected that the Chu army had surrendered to Han, so he drank and said farewell to his concubine Yu Ji in the camp. Yu Ji cut the throat by Xiang’s sword. Finally, Xiang Yu failed and threw himself on a sword. The most impressive role in the opera is Yu Ji. She was a smart, faithful and brave woman, and that is why she can be Xiang Yu’s concubine. Yu Ji’s first appearance was that the loyal minister wanted her to persuade Xiang Yu not to send troops. Although Xiang didn’t listen to her, we can know that Yu Ji had basic war knowledge and offered some constructive suggestions to Xiang Yu. And she always compared with Xiang, no fear of enemies. The climax of the whole opera is that Yu Ji danced with double swords for delighting Xiang Yu, which surprised me most, given that from her strong dance, I only can see a female fighter who was brave, skillful and staunch. During her dance, she looked cheerful even if the cheer was strained. At the end of this set, Xiang Yu said farewells to his concubine, and Yu Ji just begged to throw herself on his sword. I can see the greatest faithful woman who had followed her king from the beginning to the end.The dressing of Yu Ji is different from other actresses first because of her unique crown, named “RuYi crown” and designed by Mei Lanfang, while other female roles who are concubines of kings wear “Phoenix crown”. What’s more, Yu Ji wearing “ancient female costume” is also different from other female roles. The traditional costume of female roles rarely shows the slim of waist, and the long dress that is vertical to the knee, covering the skirt. While the top of the ancient female costume, Yu Ji’s wearing, is bundled in the skirt, which outlines beautiful female lines. In addition, you can find that the costume of Yu Ji is a bit like fish scales. It is the famous Peking operas’ costume “Yulinjia (Fish scales shaped armor)” that was designed by Xie Xinsheng, the well-known operas’ costume designer. Yu Ji is endowed with civil and martial virtues in the opera, and she belongs to “Huashan”, which means that she combines the Qingyi, HuaDan and Wudan. It requires the actress should be proficiency in singing, dialogue, acting and acrobatic. Yu Ji should wear armor for she goes out the army. Therefore, Mei Lanfang invited Mr. Xie Xinsheng, the master of costumes, to design a new armor for Yu Ji. Yu Ji’s costume is less feminine and more resolute than other female roles, and she also has her own sword, which reflects her character. In this opera, it has a scene that greatly shows the performing arts of Peking operas—Yu Ji’s dance with double swords. Yu Ji in this scene expresses her moods by singing and dancing with two swords. The dance was composed by Mei Lanfang, combining Tai Chi and Tai Chi sword in martial arts. It makes people feel soft and beautiful, and at the same time, it must show a neat and clear sword technique. In the performance, Yu Ji wielded the sword, making the sword intersect, parallel, and coincide. The movement is smooth, neat, and very imposing, and it is amazing to swing the two swords together in the last period. The dance expressed Yu Ji’s desire to relieve Xiang Yu’s nervous mood and encourage Xiang Yu to regain confidence and fight against the battlefield. In Peking opera, according to the development of the plot and the identity, character and mood of the roles, combined with singing and movement, it can well represent theperformance art of Peking Opera. In Farewell my concubine, there is a famous singing of Mei style, and the tune is Nanbangzi. Nanbangzi's melody and sentiment are similar to that of Xipi, but it is more charming and soft, bright and beautiful, and therefore more lyrical. The famous singing in Farewell my concubine is “My king is sleeping well in the tent” In this scene, Xiang Yu slept peacefully in the tent, and Yu Ji walked alone in the moon. At this time, she sang a “Nanbangzi” singing, sorrow and sad, and a sentence of “relieve a great weight of sorrow” is very sonorous, which is a rare high tone in the opera, making people feel Yu Ji is anxious to relieve all her worries into a happy mood. The clear moonlight slightly relieved her tight nerves, but the beautiful moonlight was full of sorrow and separation, which made her just return to the cruel reality. This singing can be a classic Mei style singing, not only because of its beautiful melody, but also because it is closely related to the inner activities of the roles, which even though the singing ended, people also felt sad and sorrow.“I am so strong, I can uproot the mountains, and my courage is renowned. I’ve fallen on bad times, yet even my horse won’t run away to save itself. If it won’t run away, what can I do? And my beloved concubine, what shall I do about her?” sung by Xiang Yu, named Song of Gaixia. This poem was singing when Xiang Yu knew that he needs to confront with the fatal fight to express his pain and nervousness, and says farewells to Yu Ji. The poem sung before the death of the Western Chu great king Xiang Yu was a powerful song that simply made the gods cries. Expressed Xiang Yu’s feeling of resentment and helplessness surrounded by the Han army. “The army of Han has captured the land of Chu. And the mournful song of Chu has been heard from all sides. Your Highness, your heroic and strong will have been wiped out. Why do I still drag out an ignoble existence?” sung by Yu Ji, named Answer to Song of Gaixia in the opera, but we cannot know if in the real history. The poem expressed Yu Ji’s loyalty to Xiang Yu and the farewell to her life, and took the oath that she will live or die together with Xiang Yu with a sincere and flawless affection. And she hoped to stimulate Xiang Yu’s fighting spirit, and Xiang Yu doesn’t need to care about her, only to fight to break through. Yu Ji’s sober understanding of the state of the war, her reasonable persuasion of facing danger, and her determination of committing suicide, all reflected her kindness, bravery and foresight. She was Xiang Yu’s beloved concubine and good counselor.Farewell my concubine tells a historical story about the ancient war. Most of the background of Peking opera performances originated in ancient times. There are tragic love stories, life trivialities, or corruption of court officials, etc. in the Peking Opera, actors and actresses’ performance let the audience integrate into the play, analyze the era and history with doubt and inquiry, and feel the character’s mood. In this way, Peking Opera allows us to relive the historical knowledge of the past, and it has been sublimated morally and emotionally. Some historical characters and events that are worth being remembered that are inherited through Peking Opera. Peking Opera has a history of more than 200 years. The cultural essence, philosophy and principles contained in it, requiring us to understand and pass on from generation to generation.。
farewell,my concubine
简介:"Farewell, My Concubine" is a movie with two parallel, intertwined stories. It is the story of two performers in the Beijing Opera, stage brothers, and the woman who comes between them. At the same time, it attempts to do no less than squeeze the entire political history of China in the twentieth century into a three-hour time-frame.影评:A fine movie, truly an epic.I finally got a chance to see "Farewell my Concubine." I'd been anxious to see it since its initial release in 1993. It surprised me in its depth and technical skill.Three points make this film outstanding. The first is the technical skill of the director and the luscious taste of the director of photography. The entire film is a feast for the eyes, taking full advantage of elaborate costumes and exotic locations. The second strength is in the actual storytelling. The plot is a fascinating tragedy, it feels almost Shakespearean. The acting is nothing short of incredible. Some of China's finest actors demonstrate their ability to carry a story that covers 52 years. Normally, these two strengths alone would be reason enough to see a film, but "Farewell my Concubine" succeeds in satisfying one more category (the bain of any epic): historical accuracy."Farewell my Concubine" is exceptionally accurate in portraying the monumental changes that were sweeping China at the time. The film doesn't just treat these events as background events, but drags them right into the plot and pins the characters into their surroundings. This is interesting when you consider that the story takes place in the Peking Opera, not the most likely place for these events to have effect. Instead, as we see the new China emerge, we watch these vestiges of old society fall, and the work of all involved make this transition an achievement to behold. The power of this film was not missed by Chinese censors who banned, removed, and then banned the film again several times over -debating whether or not its artistic brilliance was worth subversive portrayals of suicide and homosexuality. Unlike "The Last Emperor," this film was made by Chinese film makers and is in tune with its subject. I recommend this film highly! As one last note, the version I saw was a DVD containing the original 170 minute version of the film, in its wide-screen splendor. From what I understand, the shorter versions released internationally deleted and shortened some opera scenes for fear that they would be lost on Western audiences. Having no prior experience with any Peking Opera, I found the scenes fascinating and integral to appreciating the entire story. Spend the extra time if you can.提问者评价thanks~~~。

Farewell to My Concubine
Maybe life is really just a play, love, don't hate, resentment,, from, there is always a bitter end to end.Look at the Farewell to My Concubine,Brother's charming soft Wan has been unable to comment, beauty such as he, emotional expression is turned back to a hundred thoughts. His childhood lonely, for he was sold to Chinese opera, the mother was in the winter the knife cut off his extra fingers. Small children holding a bloody hand, say repeatedly repeatedly shouted the mother when the snow outside, in addition, have long been deserted. We often see this scene, the heart will be pain. Think of the depression was later Dieyi, opium, physical and emotional pain burst out crying is still the mother, raw pain, people vulnerable remarkable, not hold still, ask not sorrow. Maybe God will take pity on feminine witty person, so difficult in that many kalpas childhood met atmospheric strong he. In the play he is king, he is Yu Ji, life he is his only rely on, only regret he makes up his mind, deficient person, so his heart had with him, to sing to him a lifetime to play, one.Through a world of ice and snow in childhood, they finally famous city, his beauty, his pride, his little happy are immersed in Shige strong shelter. Dieyi to Xiaolou thrush, his heart's eyes is cherish and love, that is his most happy moments, as long as the Xiaolou is willing to, he is his concubine. However, "I am a man, and not the female jiao-e", this sentence he often spoken lines into his life irreparable sorrow. Xiaolou met his life of Yu Ji, he and Ju Xian began to belong to their happiness. While looking at his heart Dieyi overlord, stubbornly said "no.! That is a lifetime, a year, a month, a day, an hour, not a lifetime ", this is who give who promise? Who made him a lifetime? He was Yu Ji he play, he can take care of him, take pity on him, but he is never the man his life in the heavy. This always chuckle silent Dieyi stubbornly believe that the only thing in life, that is he was engraved in my heart "single mindedness", he has already promised faith, his heart years of deposition Sihuo truth was Xiaolou word negation, he just mad people in the eyes of others. Really is, others laugh at me so mad, I laugh others see don't wear. His eyes from the charming Wan into the boundless loneliness and solitude, that is the eyes of vitality. Once thought that as long as the small building to him, he can like Yu Ji and Overlord go through thick and thin together, together, happy for him, for his sad, to accompany him through every life. But now, he is lonely, his affectionateness fall into the earthly waste stream, no home, no echo. His follow just one person alone drunk. Italy is rare, perhaps only everyone is drunk, I wake up alone lonely. Or, has been drunk only brother one...However, Dieyi not said hate, as he never say love, he just out of disgust chrysanthemum instinct, he thought she stole his overlord. Actually all is so sentimental infatuation of the people, who is right and who is wrong, who wins, who say clearly. He just stubbornly insist on their own love, poured everything to defend him, help him, even building again betray his affectionate, again and again to his heart. Even until the end, Y u Ji's role was the fourth away, when Xiaolou pulled him determined to abandon do not play, he is also still so proud to die with him. He is his overlord death does not drop the arrogance, he can live and die together with him, he Mountains fall and the earth splits. However, in the face of weak reality, Xiaolou is ultimately compromise, Dieyi silence Jidi left the stage, listening to his overlord of the sentence as the past: "to have!" His heart had crumbled into dust.Everyone says the cultural revolution is the human nature is time, he still did not think of to expose him frantically at last, his critique was actually his heart dark Xu a lifetime follow fighter, he became lost faith, subversion, is he crazy or the world crazy? The heart is no longer the heart, love is no longer love, he no longer is he. He insisted on believe things have become so absurd, even the bullies are fragile, and what can persist? The ending so sad and heavy, between all people looks is the reality of the pain and madness. Lou said "don't go crazy, Dieyi not survive", he didn't have his dedication and enthusiasm, he just wanted to get a little bit of happiness in the world, as he said, "in this world, in this mortal heap, but how are we to live", but he only said "keep thinking about design, in this life I just want to when Yu Ji", he would prefer to jade and stone burned together, giant earthquakes and landslides, are unwilling to give up on art, on the heart, insist on love. This obsession, such affection after all only end up sad lonely. Their emotions are not equal, not fit on the mind, so they can not grasp each other, can only look at another sink. By the end of the film, Dieyi choose gorgeous die on the floor, dead in his overlord nearby. 霸王别姬中的菊仙--人物分析 Farewell My Concubine and Post Modernism-推荐下载
Character Analysis of Ju Xian and Post modernism------According to the movie Farewell My ConcubineCharacter Analysis of Ju Xian and Post modernism------According to the movie Farewell My Concubine Farewell my Concubine is a famous movie directed by Chen Kaige. The movie spans 53 years, presenting the lives of two men against the historical backdrop of a country in upheaval. The movie has received a lot of praise and rewarded many prizes. Hong Kong people regard it as their favorite movie during these years. The whole movie can be divided into three periods: the republican period, the period of anti-Japanese war, and the period of new China. Through these periods, the two main characters provided us with a touching epic.As a famous movie, Farewell My Concubine has many points that worth thinking deeply, but here I’m just going to explain my own understanding from the angle of one heroine---Ju Xian.No doubt, though performed by the famous actress Gong Li, Ju Xian is not a main hero of the movie. Thus, most of the comments and critics about the movie are about the two leading roles---Xiao Lou and Die Yi. However, after watching the movie twice, I find Ju Xian my favorite character. Her wise, her kindness, her loyalty of love and her miserable fate all impressed me deeply. In order to have a better understanding of Ju Xian, we should make explicit of the roles she plays in the film in advance. When Ju Xian first appears in the movie, her identity is a prostitute, which is no doubt an ignominious job. However, Ju Xian seems different from normal hookers, she is aggressive and brave. When being asked to accompany those she doesn’t like, Ju Xian refuses resolutely and even jumps from the third floor to avoid violation. In this scene, Ju Xian tries to maintain her individuality as well as her dignity as a human, which is quite different from other women in the whorehouse. Indeed, nobody is born to be a prostitute. Many of those women suffered from great miseries and have no choice other than go to the whorehouse, including Ju Xian. Actually, when she finds that Xiao Lou wants to bring her out of that place and marry her, Ju Xian immediately abandons all of her property and go to find Xiao Lou. Her decision is quite brave and determined. Just like what the procuress says, if Xiao Lou refuses to accept her as his wife, Ju Xian would have nowhere to go and nothing to support herself. But she still follows her heart and goes to find the right one in her life! Though being a prostitute is really a dishonorable experience, Ju Xian still shows her dignity, braveness and strong will to pursue true love and happiness.Later, Ju Xian and Xiao Lou get married; her identity becomes the wife of Duan Xiaolou. In fact, Ju Xian is no doubt a good wife, she not only shoulders all the family internal affairs, but also cares about her husband’s life and career. She is a cleaver woman. When she steps out of the whorehouse and stands in front of Duan Xiaolou, she uses her wisdom and wins Xiao Lou’s heart. Later, when compete with her rival Cheng Dieyi, the partner of Xiao Lou, she also takes some measures to guard her love. She is a devoted woman. When Xiao Lou is caught by the Japanese army, Ju Xian went to Die Yi for help, for he is the only one who can save her husband. At that time, Die Yi asks her to leave Xiao Lou; otherwise he will not save her husband. Ju Xian, though strongly reluctant, agrees his requirement. She is even willing to give up her love in order to save Xiao Lou! What a great woman she is! She is a selfish woman. She loves Xiao Lou and occupied him. When compete with Die Yi who also loves Xiao Lou, she spares no sympathy and asks her husband to keep away from Die Yi as far as possible. Her love is selfish indeed, but love is always selfish! She has no obligation to share her husband with anyone else, let alone a homo. Ju Xian is a simple woman. At the night of their wedding, Ju Xian sits in front of the mirror and says, almost to herself, what she wants is to live a simple and happy life with her husband and then give birth to a baby. During which time, she murmurs “no opera again” twice. From this scene, we can find that Ju Xian really a simple woman, she doesn’t want much wealth or enjoyment. In fact, her only wish is to live simply and happily. Singing operas brings her family a lot of income, but setbacks as well. So she wants Xiao Lou to abandon that. She is a loyal woman. Ju Xian used to be a prostitute, but after her marriage with Xiao Lou, she shows her love and loyalty from beginning to end. When Xiao Lou is beaten by the soldiers, she went to help him regardless of her pregnancy; when Xiao Lou is caught by the Hongweibing, she embraced him on the street in spite of all the trash and garbage throwing on her body; when Xiao Lou said he doesn’t love her, Ju Xian’s world collapsed and committed suicide, for she can not accept the fact that her beloved husband does not love her.Besides being wife of Xiao Lou, Ju Xian also acts as the mother of Xiao Lou and Die Yi. During the marriage of Ju Xian and Xiao Lou, Xiao Lou has a lot of childish behaviors, for he knows little except for singing operas. So Ju Xian takes care of his daily life and helps him with his works. During the Anti-Japanese War, Xiao Lou stops singing opera and is immersed in cricket fighting everyday. It is Ju Xian that holds the whole family and prevents her husband from spending too much money. When time flies to the age of New China, Ju Xian warns Xiao Lou several times for not being too enthusiastic. Without the supervision of Ju Xian, Xiao Lou would have already been in prison. As we all know, Xiao Lou, the actor of Xiang Yu, always does things without second thought. When Yuan Shiqing is on trial, or when a group of people are discussing what real Peking Opera is, it is Ju Xian’s admonition that saves him from beingcaught to jail. Since married to Xiao Lou, Ju Xian takes care of him in every aspect just like his mother. Meanwhile, Ju Xian acts as Die Yi’s mother as well. Although the two people compete and rival for several decades, Ju Xian is indeed the person who knows Die Yi most. When Die Yi was spitted by Xiao Lou for his singing to the Japanese, Ju Xian uses her sleeves to wipe the dirt for him. And when Die Yi is trying to get rid of drug and suffers greatly, it is Ju Xian who gives him a warm embrace. At that time, the words come out of Die Yi are: “Mom, I’m cold.” Just at that moment, Die Yi regards Ju Xian as his mother, and Ju Xian regards Die Yi as her unborn child. The last role Ju Xian plays in this film from my perspective is a victim. Ju Xian really lives a tragic life. Lives in the whorehouse originally, she has to deal with all those men’s harassment everyday. Later, when married to Duan Xiaolou, her life becomes even more twisted. What she wants is just a baby and a simple life with her family, but miseries always accompany her. In the following years, when Xiao Lou and Die Yi conflict with soldiers from Kuomintang, Ju Xian rushes onto the stage to help him. Unfortunately, she is also beaten and has an accidental abortion. How cruel it is for a future mother to lose her baby! The accident breaks her dream of being a good mother. She also got fed up with the complicated relationships of Die Yi, Xiao Lou and herself. Die Yi, who regards her as a third person, keeps being hostile towards her. While Xiao Lou, her husband, is always in a dilemma. Moreover, the changing ages and fate of Peking Opera keeps bringing problems for her family, no matter in the Kuomintang period or in New China, the three people did received many unfair treatments. Eventually, during the culture revolution, her experience of being a prostitute is exposed and Xiao Lou, her beloved husband, says that he does not her at all. With great disappointment, sorrow and despair, Ju Xian finally committed suicide. When she is found hanging on the roof herself, she is still wearing her wedding dress. Ju Xian, a woman who wants and keeps pursuing for true love and stable life, died. We can not condemn her death to anyone alone. In fact, the tragedy of Ju Xian is a symbol of the time she lives. During which time, with the changing of politic and economic situation, countless Ju Xian appears and disappears. As a post modernism film, the character of Ju Xian shows a lot of features of the post modernism. In this movie, the character of Ju Xian is no doubt complicated. She used to be a prostitute, but she has her own dignity and is faithful to her husband. She is selfish, but she is willing to do everything for her husband. She has a wise brain, but her husband still shouted “I do not love her, I have made a clear break with her!” under pressure, which breaks her heart. The complication and contradiction of a heroine shows the concept of anti-tradition, which is an important feature of post modernism.Besides, the tragic ending of Ju Xian is also a challenge of the traditional representations of a woman. According to the film, Ju Xian is blindness in pursuing love, for she chooses Xiao Lou, an actor of Peking Opera, as her husband at the first sight without any further understanding of his personality and characteristic. Moreover, she is dependent upon the patriarchal society, for she keeps helping her husband in doing things instead of finding a job of herself. With no economic income, Ju Xian has no other choices than following her husband’s steps. Furthermore, Ju Xian didn’t realize her own value. From the talk between her and Yuan Shiqing when she tries to save Die Yi we can find she is a woman with great wise. So, Ju Xian is able to carry out a lot of things which may provide more help to her family. But she didn’t realize her value, which indirectly result in her tragedy. In fact, these are common characteristics of most of the traditional women. So, this film criticizes the traditional concept of woman and appeals for women’s liberation, which is also a display of post modernism.。

It was so beautiful and moving that I just had to write about it for my English class. The play we watched was called "The Legend of the White Snake." It's a classic Chinese tale about a love story between a human and a snake spirit. The actors on the stage were dressed in colorful costumes and their makeup was so cool. They sang and danced, their movements so graceful and precise. The most impressive part of the performance was the singing. The actors sang in a style that is unique to Jingju, with high-pitched and powerful voices. Even though I couldn'tunderstand the language they were singing in, their emotions were so strong that I could feel it in my heart. The story itself was so touching. It was about love, sacrifice, and forgiveness. The White Snake spirit was willing to do anything to save her human husband, even risking her own life. It made me realize the power of love and how important it is to cherish the ones we care about. After the play ended, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I wanted to learn more about Jingju and its history. I even started practicing some of the movements and gestures I saw on stage.I feel so lucky to have experienced such a beautiful art form. Jingju is truly a treasure of Chinese culture, and I can't wait to see more performances in the future.。
