lecture-11-sectionB-Wrap up of Valuation

βA = βE
E E+D
(OK if the comp’s D not too high (+ can assume their D/V is stable))
3. Use the comps’ βA to estimate the project’s βA (e.g., as average). 4. Use estimated βA to calculate the all-equity cost of capital kA
How we get there:
Get D/V from comps, business plan, checklist, etc.
12
Cost of debt capital: kD
What we want: Expected return for creditors if project were a stand-alone with leverage ratio D/(D+E) estimated above. Imperfect approach to what we want: kD close the interest rate charged to project as stand-alone (unless debt is very risky). How we get there:
is reported as cash outflow but is not one Add (1-t)*Dep however, depreciation does imply a cash inflow of t*Dep. Altogether + Dep
- CAPX
Working capital has an opportunity cost

Big Mac index ,Jan 22nd 2009
• Helpfully, a UBS report published this week offers a handy guide to how long it takes a worker on the average net wage to earn the price of a Big Mac in 73 cities. Fast-food junkies are best off in Chicago, Toronto and Tokyo, where it takes a mere 12 minutes at work to afford a Big Mac. By contrast, employees must toil for over two hours to earn enough for a burger fix in Mexico City, Jakarta and Nairobi.

Naturally, the more property a person owns, the more he has to lose. Similarly, the more family responsibility a person has, the greater the impact if he of she dies or becomes physically disabled. Having insurance can reduce one’s concern about the possibility of suffering a loss of property or a disabling accident. Yet, is it wise to spend money on insurance even though a claim may never be made? Is keeping a spare tire in the car a wasted investment, even if the tire is never needed? The sense of security to the car driver may make the expense of the extra tire worthwhile. While financial compensation cannot make up for certain losses, it may compensate for other losses.

1.(2.7)Consider a particle with quantum number n moving in a one-dimensional box of lengthl.(a) Determine the probability of finding the particle in the left quarter of the box.(b)For what value of n is this probability a maximum?(c) What is the limit of this probability for n→∞?(d) What principle is illustrated in (c)?2.(2.17)A crude treatment of the pi electrons of a conjugated molecule regards theseelectrons as moving in the particle-in-a-box potential of Fig. 2.1, where the box length issomewhat more than the length of the conjugated chain. The Pauli exclusion principle(Chapter 10) allows no more than two electrons to occupy each box level. (These two haveopposite spins.) For 1,3-butadiene, CH2 =CHCH=CH2, take the box length as 7.0 Å and usethis model to estimate the wavelength of light absorbed when a p electron is excited from thehighest-occupied to the lowest-vacant box level of the molecular electronic ground state. The experimental value is 217 nm.3.(2.18) For the particle in a one-dimensional box of length 1, we could have put the coordinateorigin at the center of the box. Find the wave functions and energy levels for this choice of origin.4.

Costumer requirements change constantly!
The Kano model
Delighter
To test if a characteristic is basic, performance or delighter ask two questions 1. 2. How do you feel if the characteristic is absent ? How do you feel if the characteristic is present ?
The SIPOC is a useful framework to maintain the big picture perspective
Define – Voice of the customer (VOC)
Vital for every company
Solid starting point for making a VOC plan is to use the “Six serving men”.
Introduction to Define and measure
DMAIC and PDCA cycle
The DMAIC Wheel The PDCA cycle
DMAIC - Define
Define - Project charter
Define – The SIPOC diagram
Define – Voice of tion
• Proactive data – observation, interviews etc. • Reactive data – customer feedback, warranty claims etc.
“Once you embrace unpleasant news not as a negative but as evidence of a need of change, you aren’t defeated by it. You’re learning from it” (Bill Gates)
If 1 = bad, 2 = neutral, it is a basic If 1 = neutral, 2 = good, it is a delighter If the answer is “it depends”, it is a performance
Define – Voice of the customer (VOC)
“I knew six honest serving men, they taught me all I knew; their names are what and why and when, and where and how and who” Who What Why Where When How are the customers? do they want? do they want it? do they want it? do they want it? do they want it?
CTQ tree (critical to quality)
Call centre example
Need
Drivers
Capable operators
CTQ Characteristics
Accurate responses Not put on hold Quick decisions Authority to act Time on hold Customer transferred immediately to the correct person Detailed specifications – Easy to measure
Good service
Empowered operators
Short wait High level requirements – difficult to measure
Exercise
Honda is preparing a Hybrid car. Read the article as a foundation for your understanding. Use Six serving men, the Kano model and CTQ tree to make your own analyse of Honda’s project. When doing the CTQ tree the need for Honda is to produce a hybrid car that customers want to buy – you must come up with drivers and ctq characteristics. If the article does not give you sufficient information then use your common sense. Do the exercise in groups of 2.
