2015 Text 1A new study suggests that contrary to most surveys, people are actually more stressed at home than at work. Researchers measured people’s cortisol, which is a stress marker, while they were at work and while they were at home and found it higher at what is supposed to be a place of refuge.“Further contradicting conventional wisdom, we found that women as well as men have lower levels of stress at work than at home,” writes o ne of the researchers, Sarah Damaske. In fact women even say they feel better at work, she notes. “It is men, not women, who report being happier at home than at work.” Another surprise is that the findings hold true for both those with children and without, but more so for nonparents. This is why people who work outside the home have better health. What the study doesn’t measure is whether people are still doing work when they’re at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office. For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back. For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office. And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with-household tasks. With the blurring of roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it’s not surprising that women are more stressed at home. But it’s not just a gender thing. At work, people pretty much know what they’re supposed to be doing: wor king, making money, doing the tasks they have to do in order to draw an income. The bargain is very pure: Employee puts in hours of physical or mental labor and employee draws outlife-sustaining moola. On the home front, however, people have no such clarity. Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out. There are a lot of tasks to be done, there are inadequate rewards for most of them. Your home colleagues –your family –have no clear rewards for their l abor; they need to be talked into it, or if they’re teenagers, threatened with complete removal of all electronic devices. Plus, they’re your family. You cannot fire your family. You never really get to go home from home.So it’s not surprising that people are more stressed at home. Not only are the tasks apparently infinite, the co-workers are much harder to motivate.21.According to Paragraph 1, most previous surveys found that home .[A]offered greater relaxation than the workplace[B]was an ideal place for stress measurement[C]generated more stress than the workplace[D]was an unrealistic place for relaxation22.According to Damaske, who are likely to be the happiest at home?[A]Working mothers.[B]Childless husbands.[C]Working fathers.[D]Childless wives.23.The blurring of working women’s roles refers to the fact that .[A]their home is also a place for kicking back[B]they are both bread winners and housewives[C]there is often much housework left behind[D]it is difficult for them to leave their office24.The word “moola” (Line 4, Para. 4) most probably means .[A]skills[B]energy[C]earnings[D]nutrition25.The home front differs from the workplace in that .[A]family labor is often adequately rewarded[B]home is hardly a cozier working environment[C]household tasks are generally more motivating[D]division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut2015 Text 2For years, studies have found that first-generation college students –those who do not have a parent with a college degree – lag other students on a range of education achievement factors. Their grades are lower and their dropout rates are higher. But since such students are most likely to advance economically if they succeed in higher education, colleges and universities have pushed for decades to recruit more of them. This has created “a paradox” in that recruiting first-generation students, but then watching many of them fail, means that higher education has “continued to reproduce and widen, rather than close” an achievement gap based on social class, according to the depressing beginning of a paper forthcoming in the journal Psychological Science. But the article is actually quite optimistic, as it outlines a potential solution to this problem, suggesting that an approach (which involves a one-hour, next-to-no-cost program) can close 63 percent of the achievement gap (measured by such factors as grades) between first-generation and other students. The authors of the paper are from different universities, and their findings are based on a study involving 147 students (who completed the project) at an unnamed private university. First generation was defined as not having a parent with a four-year college degree. Most of the first-generation students (59.1 percent) were recipients of Pell Grants, a federal grant for undergraduates with financial need, while this was true only for 8.6 percent of the students with at least one parent with a four-yeardegree.Their thesis – that a relatively modest intervention could have a big impact – was based on the view that first-generation students may be most lacking not in potential but in practical knowledge about how to deal with the issues that face most college students. They cite past research by several authors to show that this is the gap that must be narrowed to close the achievement gap. Many first-generation students “struggle to navigate the middle-class culture of higher education, learn the ‘rules of the game,’ and take advantage of college resources,” they write. And this becomes more of a problem when colleges don’t talk about the class advantages and disadvantages of different groups of students. “Bec ause US colleges and universities seldom acknowledge how social class can affect students’ educational experiences, many first-generation students lack insight about why they are struggling and do not understand how students ‘like them’ can improve.”26.Recruiting more first-generation students has .[A]reduced their dropout rates[B]narrowed the achievement gap[C]missed its original purpose[D]depressed college students27.The authors of the research article are optimistic because .[A]their findings appeal to students[B]the recruiting rate has increased[C]the problem is solvable[D]their approach is costless28.The study suggests that most first-generation students .[A]are from single-parent families[B]study at private universities[C]are in need of financial support[D]have failed their college29.The authors of the paper believe that first-generation students .[A]may lack opportunities to apply for research projects[B]are inexperienced in handling their issues at college[C]can have a potential influence on other students[D]are actually indifferent to the achievement gap30.We may infer from the last paragraph that .[A]universities often reject the culture of the middle-class[B]students are usually to blame for their lack of resources[C]social class greatly helps enrich educational experiences[D]colleges are partly responsible for the problem in question2015 Text 3Even in traditional offices, “the lingua franca of corporate America has gotten much more emotional and much more right-brained than it was 20 years ago,” said Harvard Business School professor Nancy Koehn. She started spinning off examples. “If you and I parachuted back to Fortune 500 companies in 1990, we would see much less frequent use of terms like journey, mission, passion. There were goals, there were strategies, there were objectives, but we didn’t talk about energy; we didn’t talk about passion.”Koehn pointed out that this new era of corporate vocabulary is very “team”-oriented – and not by coincidence. “Let’s not forget sports – in male-dominated corporate America, it’s still a big deal. It’s not explicitly conscious; it’s the idea that I’m a coach, and you’re my team, and we’re in this together. There are lots and lots of CEOs in very different companies, but most think of themselves as coaches and this is their team and they want to win. ”These terms are also intended to infuse work with meaning – and, as Rakesh Khurana, another professor, points out, increase allegiance to the firm. “You have the importation of terminology that historically used to be associated with non-profit organizations and religious organizations: terms like vision, values, passion, and purpose,” said Khurana. This new focus on personal fulfillment can help keep employees motivated amid increasingly loud debates over work-life balance. Theabout why women still can’t have it all and books like Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, whose title has become a buzzword in its own right. Terms like unplug, offline, life-hack, bandwidth, and capacity are all about setting boundaries between the office and the home. But if your work is your “passion,” you’ll be more likely to devote yourself to it, even if that means going home for dinner and then working long after the kids are in bed.But this seems to be the irony of office speak: Everyone makes fun of it, but managers love it, companies depend on it, and regular people willingly absorb it. As a linguist once said, “You can get people to think it’s nonsense at the same time that you buy into it.” In a workplace that’s fundamentally indifferent to your life and its meaning, office speak can help you figure out how you relate to your work – and how your work defines who you are.31.According to Nancy Koehn, office language has become .[A]less strategic [B] less energetic[C] more objective [D] more emotional32.“Team”-oriented corporate vocabulary is closely related to .[A]sports culture [B] gender difference[C] historical incidents [D] athletic executives33.Khurana believes that the importation of terminology aims to .[A]revive historical terms[B]promote company image[C]foster corporate cooperation[D]strengthen employee loyalty34.It can be inferred that Lean In .[A]voices for working women[B]appeals to passionate workaholics[C]triggers debates among mommies[D]praises motivated employees35.Which of the following statements is true about office speak?[A]Linguists believe it to be nonsense.[B]Regular people mock it but accept it.[C]Companies find it to be fundamental.[D]Managers admire it but avoid it.2015 Text 4Many people talked of the 288,000 new jobs the Labor Department reported for June, along with the drop in the unemployment rate to 6.1 percent, as good news. And they were right. For now it appears the economy is creating jobs at a decent pace. We still have a long way to go to get back to full employment, but at least we are now finally moving forward at a faster pace. However, there is another important part of the jobs picture that was largely overlooked. There was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time. This figure is now 830,000(4.4 percent)above its year ago level. Before explaining the connection to the Obamacare, it is worth making an important distinction. Many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs. They take part-time work because this is all they can get. An increase in involuntary part-time work is evidence of weakness in the labor market and it meansthat many people will be having a very hard time making ends meet. There was an increase in involuntary part-time in June, but the general direction has been down. Involuntary part-time employment is still far higher than before the recession, but it is down by 640,000 (7.9 percent) from its year ago level. We know the difference between voluntary and involuntary part-time employment because people tell us. The survey used by the LaborDepartment asks people if they worked less than 35 hours in the reference week. If the answer is “yes,” they are classified as working part-time. The survey then asks whether they worked less than 35 hours in that week because they wanted to work less than full time or because they had no choice. They are only classified as voluntary part-time workers if they tell the survey taker they chose to work less than 35 hours a week. The issue of voluntary part-time relates to Obamacare because one of the main purposes was to allow people to get insurance outside of employment. For many people, especially those with serious health conditions or family members with serious health conditions, before Obamacare the only way to get insurance was through a job that provided health insurance. However, Obamacare has allowed more than 12 million people to either get insurance through Medicaid or the exchanges. These are people who may previously have felt the need to get a full-time job that provided insurance in order to cover themselves and their families. With Obamacare there is no longer a link between employment and insurance.36.Which part of the jobs picture was neglected?[A]The prospect of a thriving job market.[B]The increase of voluntary part-time jobs.[C]The possibility of full employment.[D]The acceleration of job creation.37.Many people work part-time because they .[A]prefer part-time jobs to full-time jobs[B]feel that is enough to make ends meet[C]cannot get their hands on full-time jobs[D]haven’ t seen the weakness of the market38.Involuntary part-time employment in the US .[A]shows a general tendency of decline[B]is harder to acquire than one year ago[C]satisfies the real need of the jobless[D]is lower than before the recession39.It can be learned that with Obamacare, .[A]it is no longer easy for part-timers to get insurance[B]full-time employment is still essential for insurance[C]it is still challenging to get insurance for family members[D]employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance40.The text mainly discusses .[A]employment in the US[B]part-timer classification[C]insurance through Medicaid[D]Obamacare’s troublePart AText 1 21~25 A B B C D Text 2 26~30 C C C B D Text 3 31~35 D A D A B Text 4 36~40 B C A D A。

Passage 14After stepping down this summer as the head of the EPA, the embattled Christine Todd Whitman is once again in the hot seat. This time it's over her role in the downplaying of health hazards for New York City residents after 9/11. A report by the EPA inspector general says that Whitman assured the public that the air was safe before testing was conclusive. She's also under fire for allowing EPA statements to be filtered through the White House and screened by the Council on Environmental Quality, which is chaired by James Connaughton, a lawyer who formerly represented the asbestos industry. The long-term effects of inhaling contaminated air is unknown. But New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler accuses the administration of covering up a potential health danger in order to get the economy up and running. "Many people will die early because of this," says Nadler. In her first interview since the release of the report, Whitman tells NEWSWEEK that she did not object when the White House edited out cautionary notes by EPA scientists. "We didn't want to scare people," she said, explaining that spikes in asbestos readings tended to return quickly to acceptable levels. She believes that much of the data were open to interpretation, and that the public wasn't harmed by the White House's decision to adopt the more reassuring analysis. But New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is calling for an investigation, saying she knows how the White House works and that somebody surely leaned on the EPA to lie. "We were not told to lie," says Whitman.Firefighters and other rescue workers suffering health problems continue to blame the EPA for failing to make them aware of the risks. The EPA advised wearing protective clothing and masks, Whitman says, but many working on the site rejected the gear as too cumbersome. "We couldn't force them to do it," says Whitman. In addition, residents returning to the area say they weren't told to have their homes professionally cleaned. "Maybe there was one press release where we didn't say that, but then we said it over and over," says Whitman.EPA's former ombudsman said soon after 9/11 that Whitman had a conflict of interest because of her husband's connection to Citigroup, which owns Travelers Insurance. By pronouncing lower Manhattan safe, critics say, Whitman saved the insurance giant millions in cleanup costs. Whitman was cleared of the conflict by the EPA inspector general. "There's no way in hell--excuse my language--that I would ever, ever play games with this kind of information." Text 4;1. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. “Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour.” Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle’s neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull’s name, Gulliver, was given by him.The gull’s size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone’s attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller (婴儿车) on the floating dock (码头) when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie’s stroller shake strongly. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things. This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she’d learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears (眼泪). “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Katie sat up. “Katie! Katie!” Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. “How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks,” Uncle Ralph said, “At least… it sounded like him. A BAR AT THE FOLIES女神游乐场的酒吧间(Un bar auxfolies)A One of the most critically renowned paintings of the19th-century modernist movement is the French painter Edouard Manet's masterwork,A Bar at the Folies.Originally belonging to the composer Emmanuel Chabrier, it is now in the possession of The Courtauld Gallery in London, where it has also become a favourite with the crowds.《女神游乐场的酒吧间》是法国画家爱德华·马奈极为重要,最具声誉的作品之一,创作于19世纪现代主义运动期间。

B The painting is set late at night in a nineteenth-century Parisian nightclub.A barmaid stands alone behind her bar, fitted out in a black bodice that has a frilly white neckline, and with a spray of flowers sitting across her décolletage. She rests her hands on the bar and gazes out forlornly at a point just below the viewer, not quite making eye contact. Also on the bar are some bottles of liquor and a bowl of oranges, but much of the activity in the room takes place in the reflection of a mirror behind the barmaid.Through this mirror we see an auditorium, bustling with blurred figures and faces:men in top hats,a woman examining the scene below her through binoculars, another in long gloves, even the feet of a trapeze artist demonstrating acrobatic feats above his adoring crowd. In the foreground of the reflection a man with a thick moustache is talking with the barmaid.

Passage 2(Stricter Traffic Law can Prevent Accidents)From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. We are immunized from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. It is almost certain that one day remedies will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car ! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They swear, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-years-olds and utterly selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy tragic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten. It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through stringent annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can impair a person’s driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound inordinately harsh. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if tit results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.1.The main idea of this passage is[A] Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.[B] Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.[C] The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.[D] Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.2.What does the author think of society toward motorists?[A] Society smiles on the motorists.[B] Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.[C] Victims of accidents are nothing.[D] Society condones their rude driving.3.Why does the author say:’his car becomes the extension of his personality?’[A] Driving can show his real self.[B] Driving can show the other part of his personality.[C] Driving can bring out his character.[D] His car embodies his temper.4.Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?[A] Build more highways.[B] Stricter driving tests.[C] Test drivers every three years.[D] raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.5.The attitude of the author is[A] ironical[B] critical[C] appealing[D] militantVocabulary1.immunise 2.expectation of life = life expectancy 平均寿命3.versus = against 对顶,反对4.mutilate 伤害5.wilful 任性的,固执的6.benign 宽厚的,仁慈的7.condone 宽容8.desecrate 亵渎,玷污9.code 法规,规定,惯例10.stringent 严格的,紧急的,迫切的11.performance 演出,成品,这里是指car’s behavior such as speed, function etc.

Science Fiction1. Amongst the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.2. It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society,a theme which is still often found in modem stories.3. Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundredyears. Books by writers such as Jules Veme and H. G Wells, to mention just two well-known authors have been translated into many languages.4. Modem science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars (火星) or space adventure stories . They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now . Because of this, their writing has obvious politicalundertones(含义).5. In an age where science fact frequently overtakes (超过) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology.

Reading across cultures

Reading across cultures

2015年专业四级英语真题(翻译)Passage 2(翻译)I was a second-year medical student at the university, and was on my second day of rounds at a nearby hospital. My university's philosophy was to get students seeing patients early in their education. Nice idea, but it overlooked one detail: second-year students know next to nothing about medicine.Assigned to my team that day was an attending - a senior faculty member who was there mostly to make patients feel they weren't in the hands of amateurs. Many attendings were researchers who didn't have much recent hospital experience. Mine was actually an arthritis specialist. Also along was a resident (the real boss, with a staggering mastery of medicine, at least to a rookie like myself). In addition there were two interns(住院实习医生). These guys were just as green as I was,but in a scarier way: they had recently graduated from the medical school, so they were technically MDs.I began the day at 6:30 am. An intern and I did a quick check of our eight patients; later, we were to present our findings to the resident and then to the attending. I had three patients and the intern had the other five - piece of cake. But when I arrived in the room of 71-year-old Mr. Adams,he was sitting up in bed, sweating heavily and panting (喘气). He'd just had a hip operation and looked terrible. I listened to his lungs with my stethoscope, but they sounded clear. Next I checked the log of his vital signs and saw that his respiration and heart rate had been climbing, but histemperature was steady. It didn't seem like heart failure, nor did it appear to be pneumonia. So I asked Mr. Adams what he thought was going on."It's really hot in here, Doc," he replied. So I attributed his condition to the stuffy room and told him the rest of the team would return in a few hours. He smiled and feebly waved goodbye. At 8:40 am., during our team meeting, "Code Blue Room 307!" blared from the loudspeaker. I froze. That was Mr. Adams's room. When we arrived, he was motionless. The autopsy (尸体解剖) later found Mr. Adams had suffered a massive pulmonary embolism (肺部栓塞). A blood clot had formed in his leg, worked its way to his lungs, and cut his breathing capacity in half. His symptoms had been textbook: heavy perspiration and shortness of breath despite clear lungs. The only thing was: I hadn't read that chapter in the textbook yet. And I was too scared, insecure, and proud to ask a real doctor for help. This mistake has haunted me for nearly 30 years, but what's particularly frustrating is that the same medical education system persists. Who knows how many people have died or suffered harm at the hands of students as naive as I, and how many more will?

Translation Practice and Gains from It学生姓名:二学位班级:主修学校:指导教师:翻译心得与翻译实践摘要“汽油喷射发动机”是一篇科技类的说明文,文中提到汽油喷射发动机主要有机械式和电子喷射式两种,本文主要介绍了一种L-型的电子控制汽油喷射发动机的组成和各部分的工作原理。

“The Post-alcohol Word”

It mentions that there are two kinds of fuel injection engine—mechanical fuel injection engine and electronic control fuel injection engine. This paper mainly discusses one L-type electronic control fuel injection engine about its components and the ways they work. “The Post-alcohol Word”is also a scientific article. It discusses the coming back of the biofuel, its background, methods and future. I’m interested in both of them. As a student majoring in thermal energy and power Institute of school of Automobile, I have a good knowledge of vehicles. It’s comparably easier for me to translate Auto terms. In the whole process, I have always been using the translation skills learned in the class—amplification, repetition, omission, inversion, division, the changes of voices, literal translation and free translation etc. At first I was with Weariness Emotion when dealing with long, complex sentences. But after dividing them into lots of small parts, I found it not that difficult any more. Although I still can’t understand some parts of the article accurately, the whole process is smooth.I know I need take more efforts to improve my translation competence. I should get more knowledge of English language as well as Chinese culture. Only in this way can I accurately understand and translate articles. I have gained a lot from this work. The original 1970s appeal of biofuel was the opportunity to stick up a finger or two to the oil sheikhs. Over time, the opportunity to fight global warming added to the original energy-security appeal. Make petrol out of plants is a sufficiently clever way.Sadly, the output fuel was not petrol. Instead, it was ethanol, which stores less energy per litre, tends to absorb water and is corrosive. Thus they plan to make hydrocarbons instead of ethanol. These will be “drop-in” fuels. Appropriately designed drop-in fuels can substitute for diesel and aviation fuel, which ethanol cannot. If this approach works, it will not only be beneficial in its own right—modestly reducing greenhouse-gas emissions while making money for its investors—it will also provide a lasting market incentive to scientists to devise better ways of turning cellulose into sugar. The drop-in firms are starting to come out of the laboratory, float themselves on the stock market, team up with oil companies and build their first factories. Gevo, of Englewood, Colorado, is planning to make another type of post-ethanol fuel: butanol, which has four carbon atoms in its molecules, whereas ethanol has two. That gives butanol more energy for a given mass and makes it more alkane-like in its properties; nor does it absorb water as readily as ethanol. Moreover, the production process for butanol is more efficient than the processes that produce alkanes.Making cellulose into sugar is technically possible, and many firms are working on that possibility. Where does the cellulose come from? The answer is likely to be grass. If the price were right, such energy crops might take America a fair bit of the way to the “energy independence” that early proselytisers for biofuel crowed about. Such a future, though, depends on cars continuing to be powered by liquid fuels. Over the long run, the future for biofuel may be looking up.“Fuel Injection Engine” tells that :Compared with carburetor engine, the evident advantage of fuel injection engine is that it can accurately control the quality of the mixture. Thus it ensures complete combustion of the fuel inside the cylinder andreduces the exhaust emission as well as fuel consumption. At the same time it increases engine’s volumetric efficiency as well as engine’s power and torque. The drawback is that it’s more expensive .What’s more, once broken down, it’s difficult to repair.Fuel injection is typed into two kinds : mechanical fuel injection and electronic control fuel injection .Any kind of electronic control fuel injection device is composed of fuel injection circuit, the sensor group and the electronic control unit (microcomputer) idle equipment, exhaust gas recirculation control device etc. According to the air induction method, electronic control gasoline injection device is divided into two types .One is flow-sensor electronic control fuel injection device (L-type), which controls the fuel injection quantity by sensing the flow of air in the intakemanifold .The other one is the pressure-sensor electronic control fuel injection device (D-type), which controls fuel injection quantity by sensing the pressure of air in the intake manifold. The L-type is widely used. Both are scientific articles, thus there’re lots of terms especially in “Thepost-alcohol world”. Those original phrases are hard for me to understand, for example: “stick up a finger or two”, “t he dice are rolling”, “think big” etc. Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand thus I can’t translate all of them exactly.2 The Use of Translation MethodsIn the process of translation, I mainly used methods as follows: amplification, repetition, omission, inversion, division, the changes of voices, literal translation and free translation etc. I’ll list some examples.2.1 Using Amplification Translationeg.1 “汽油喷射发动机与化油器式发动机相比,突出的优点是能准确控制混合气的质量,保证气缸内的燃料燃烧完全,使废气排放物和燃油消耗都能够降得下来。

One cultural difference I’ve noticed between Britain and China is what we do during lunchtime. In China, people use lunchtime to rest and take a nap (小睡). I often see office workers rest their heads at their desks. Sometimes, I see workers in restaurantsalso taking short naps. However in Britain, this activity is quite uncommon. British students usually have a one-hour lunch break. Instead of napping, they fill that time by playing sports or talking with friends. And many workers in Britain don’t get the chance to nap. They generally have short lunch breaks-between 30 minutes to an hour. So there is not enough time to have a good nap. Because of the short breaks, it is common for people to work through lunch, and have food at their desks.Yet in China, workers have longer lunch breaks, giving them a better chance to sleep. And interestingly, it’s not only Chinese who enjoy napping. Spain is famous for its afternoon naps, which are called siestas. It usually lasts around two hours!1. On one trip, I was about ten. I was playing in the big bench in the back of the car. My grandfather was driving. And my grandmother had the passenger seat, She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the smell. Then I remembered an ad about smoking. It said that every puff (一口) of a cigarette would take about two minutes off your life. At that age, I’d take any excuse to do the math. I estimated (估算) the number of cigarettes my grandmother smoked per day, the number of puffs per cigarette and so on. When I was pleased that I’d come up with a number, I proudly told my grandmother, “At two minutes per puff, you’ve taken nine years off your life!〞I expected my grandmother would say something good for my cleverness. Instead, she began to cry, I did not know what to do. My grandfather had to stop the car by the roadside. He got out of the car, came around, opened my door and waited for me to follow. My grandfather looked at me and said gently and calmly,“Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.〞What I want to talk to you today is the difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift, and kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.1. What did Jeff’s grandparents do? (不超过10个词)2. When Janet saw him, she suggested crossing the street to the other side. But Amy said they needn’t.When Mr. Dawson saw Amy, he smiled and said, “Hello, Amy! I see you have a new friend with you today.〞 Amy smiled back and told him that Janet would stay with her that night. Mr. Dawson looked friendly and gave them each a fresh apple. The girls were glad to get them.Later Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he is the most unwelcome person in town. Why was he so kind to us?〞 Amy explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she pretended (假装) there was an invisible(看不见的) smile on his face and so she always smiled back at him. It took a long time, but one day he half-smiled back at her, and then started talking to her.“An invisible smile?〞 Janet was puzzled. “Yes.〞Answered Amy,“My grandma told me to think so. She says smiles can run around. If we keep smiling at someone, sooner or later he will really smile back.〞Remember what Amy’s grandma said, and we will find that most people can’t refuse our smile.1. Lesson 1 Paper TigersWhat happens to all the Asian-American overachievers when the test-taking ends?当考试结束时,所有的亚裔美国人都会有怎样的表现呢?By Wesley Yang Published May 8,2011para 1Sometimes I’ll glimpse my reflection in a window and feel astonished by what I see. Jet-black hair. Slanted eyes. A pancake-flat surface of yellow-and-green-toned skin. An expression that is nearly reptilian in its impassivity. I’ve contrived to think of this face as the equal in beauty to any other. But what I feel in these moments is its strangeness to me. It’s my face. I can’t disclaim it. But what does it have to do with me?有时我会从窗户里瞥见我的倒影,我会对我所看到的感到惊讶。

乌黑的头发。

斜眼。

黄绿色肤色的薄煎饼状的表面。

一种近乎爬行动物般冷漠的表情。

我想方设法地认为这张脸在美貌上与其他任何人都不相上下。

但在这些时刻我感觉到的是它对我来说很奇怪。

这是我的脸。

我不能否认。

但这和我有什么关系呢?Para 2Millions of Americans must feel estranged from their own faces. But every self-estranged individual is estranged in his own way. I, for instance, am the child of Korean immigrants, but I do not speak my parents’ native tongue. I have never dated a Korean woman. I don’t have a Korean friend. Though I am an immigrant, I have never wanted to strive like one.

The Paper Chase
1. "Running a house is lot like running a business." says Stephanie Denton, a professional organizer based in Cincinnati, Ohio, who specializes in both residential and commercial paperwork and record keeping. To get a successful grip on organizing documents, bills, and other materials, Denton suggests the following tips:
2. Create a space in which you can always do your paperwork. This is perhaps the most important element of a successful system. If you can't devote an entire desk to the task, at least invest in a rolling file cart to store active paperwork and a two-drawer file cabinet for family records. Store the rolling file cart wherever it is most convenient and comfortable to do your work. whether that is the kitchen, office, or family room.
3. When in doubt, throw it out, the first step to implementing a workable filling system is to eliminate paper you don't use, don't need, or that you could easily access again elsewhere. Throw out duplicate statements, old catalogs, and all of the coupons, mailings, or offerings you'll never have an opportunity to use or even read.
4. Set aside two days a month to pay bills, if a monthly due date doesn't fit into your cycle, call up the creditor and suggest a more convenient date, keep two manila folders at the front of your system for current bills — one to correspond with each bill-paying day — and file all incoming bills. Keep a list in the front of each folder of what needs to be paid in case the invoice never arrives or gets misplaces.
5. Think of your filling system not as a rigid tool, but as a living, breathing system that can accommodate your changing needs. A good filling system is both mentally and physically flexible, everyone's needs are different, says Denton, but when devising a filling system, ask yourself: "Where would I look for this?" Create main headings for your filling system, such as investments, Taxes, Children, and so forth, and file individual folders under the main headings. Never overstuff your files.
练习:
1. Paragraph 2 __________
2. Paragraph 3 __________
3. Paragraph 4 __________
5. Stephanie Denton is expert ____________________.
6. You can put your file cart anywhere you like, on condition ________.
7. Coupons should be thrown away because ____________________.

Stephanie Denton
