A high school English teacher in Texas who works with needy students in emotional(情感的) or physical pain related to their immigration(移民) to the United States was named the 2015 National Teacher of the Year.
Shanna Peeples works at Palo Duro High in Amarillo, where about 85 percent of
students are from badlyoff families and where more refugee children (who have been forced to leave their country) are admitted than in any other high school in the 31,000student district.
Peeples said a childhood that exposed her to alcoholism and violence in her family has provided her with sympathy(同情) for students from Burma, Somalia, Ethiopia, Iraq and Cuba, many of whom are survivors of emotional or physical injuries in their wartorn homelands.
“That’s what helped me as a teacher probably more than anything, and that helped me make that connection with them, unfortunately,” Peeples said.
The 50yearold mother of three grown children, whose teachers when she was young advised her to write to find a way out of her pain and loneliness, began teaching after working as a medical assistant, pet sitter and journalist at Amarillo Globe News, where she covered education. She’s taught for 12 years, the past seven at Palo Duro High.
One former student knows there are plenty of selfless teachers in Texas and across the country. But Peeples has something that is difficult to describe exactly, said Viet Tran, a college junior who believes he wouldn’t be at Harvard studying neurobiology on a scholarship(奖学金) without Peeples’ help.
“The reason for her being a special teacher is she is able to bridge a very wide gap between student achievement and student experience,” said the 21year old junior who came to the U.S. in 1998 from Vietnam.
On occasion, Peeples has spoken with the refugee parents who wanted their children to get jobs so they could help support the family, rather than attend school.
“She tries to help the parents in families understand that their child’s future is really in education,” Tran said.

The yoyo may seem like a modern toy, but in fact it’s very old. It may have been invented in the Philippines or in China, but as long ago as 450 B.C., it had reached Europe. A boy playing with what we now call a yoyo is even shown on a bowl from ancient Greece.
Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant working in California, began to make and sell
yoyos in the 1920s. (The word yoyo means“come back” in a Filipino language.)
A few years later, Flores sold his company to Donald Duncan, an American businessman. Duncan, an ingenious marketer, sent employees around the country to show off yo yo tricks and give out free instruction books. When kids saw the cool tricks, they wanted yoyos for themselves.
With practice, anyone can learn yoyo tricks and perform them well. The first thing you’ll need to do is cut the yoyo’s string(线) to the proper length. Place the yoyo on the ground and pull the string up. Wind up the string and hold your yoyo in your hand. Flick(轻弹) it down, turning your hand over to catch it when it returns. Y ou’re now ready to go to Sleep.
Sleeping is the basis for many tricks. Begin with the regular throwing, but once the yoyo leaves your hand, hold your wrist still. Instead of returning, the yo yo should spin at the bottom of the string. A quick turn of the wrist will bring it back to you. If_you_have_trouble_sleeping,_try_a_glass_of_warm_milk_at_bedtime. If your yoyo has trouble Sleeping, make sure your string isn’t twisted(缠绕) up too tightly. Let the yoyo unwind and gently untwist itself.
Practice Sleeping until you can do it for five seconds without having your yoyo“wake up”. Once you can do that, you’re ready to Walk the Dog. Throw down a Sleeper, and then gently place it on the floor.
