雅思阅读练习题:Why Hollywood refuses actors of color-
雅思阅读练习题:Why Hollywood refuses actors of color?Four of the year’s 25 top-grossing movies(票房收入的电影)star a minority in a leading role. All but two had white directors. And the number of minority actors forecasters expect to get Oscar nominations(提名)can be counted on one hand. (有望获得奥斯卡提名的少数族裔演员屈指可数。
) In the year since the Sony Pictures hack exposed racially insensitive emails and cast a spotlight on Hollywood’s diversity problem, movie studios have shown little progress in hiring more people of color for their casts and crews. The industry is ignoring a gold mine. Every year for the past half-decade,the average white American has bought a ticket to fewer films than the average black,Hispanic or Asian moviegoer, industry data shows. Though 37 percent of the U.S. population, minorities bought 46 percent of the $1.2 billion in tickets sold in the United States last year. Some of the year’s biggest surprises had diverse actors and small budgets but ended up dominating(控制)the silver screen. For five straight weeks ending in September, movies with predominately(占绝大多数地)black casts topped the box office(票房), including the Christian drama “War Room, ” thriller “The Perfect Guy” and rap biography “Straight Outta Compton, ” which has made $200 million on a $28 million budget to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time.More recently, “Creed, ” a “Rocky” spinoff starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler — both 20-something black men who led the 2013 critical darling “Fruitvale Station” — has triumphed with $72 million at the box office and one of the best opening weekends in the boxing franchise’s(连锁加盟店)40-year history.High-profile hires of actors such as Jordan in “Creed” and John Boyega in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” have remained the exception in a Hollywood that has shown only stuttering(结巴的;不持续的)progress over the past year in getting more-diverse talent into blockbuster(大片) roles. (《信念》中用乔丹当演员,以及《星球大战:力量苏醒》用约翰.勃耶加,如此高调的行为在好莱坞仅仅是例外而已。

For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider (蜘蛛) with four legs.Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain to break down when it was broken. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed. To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals (信号) to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then work out the machine’s shape at any moment. The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better man-made (人造的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who losethem. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals work out their own sense of place in space.“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in the US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”1.(小题1)Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?A.They have no computers inside.B.The computer has changed a lot.C.They cannot repair themselves.D.The computer cannot work if the robot changes.2.(小题2)The new technology allows the robot to .A.do house work for humansB.tell people where it isC.remember a lot of informationD.keep working after being damaged3.(小题3)The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to.A.sensors B.arms and legs C.scientists D.robots4.(小题4)How do the sensors in the robot work?A.They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.B.They can find out where the damage comes from.C.They can replace (替代) the computer when it’s broken.D.They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.C15、One day when the government officials(官员)were rebuilding a barn(谷仓), they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to force the mice inside the hole to come out. That journey is not an easy one because every day it makes us face new problems in new ways. When I was a little boy, I always looked forward to the next trip or the next holiday. Maybe it is because we lived in a small and boring town. When I finished school, I kept moving. As a result, Portuguese culture is deeply immersed into many comers of Macao. Many Portuguese settled and opened Portuguese restaurants in the special administrative region, but the flavor is more adaptable to Chinese people.Marking at the Ruins of St. PaulThe Ruins of St. Paul is the signature landmark of Macao. The ruins consist of the St. Paul's College and the Church of St. Paul, built in 1583. However, after three intense fires in 1595, 1601 and 1835, the church was seriously damaged. I remember watching the first Harry Potter film and my friend was complaining that the characters weren't how she imagined them to be. I couldn't understand what she meant because, in my mind, they had never been images at all, just concepts. When l shut my eyes, I see nothing. I have no visual imagination.I thought everyone's minds worked this way until about two years ago, when I came across a text about aphantasia, a condition where you lack a functioning mind's eye. I was 23, and it blew my mind to learn that others could visualize things. It was clear I had aphantasia, too, and a lot of things started to make more sense. For me, imagination had always been impossible. If someone asked me to close my eyes and picture myself by the sea, I would see nothing.I am currently studying for a PhD in biology at college. A good little test for me is drawing. I can copy things almost like for like if they are in front of me, but if I were to draw from my imagination it would look terrible. It doesn't mean you cannot be creative; you just have to adapt. Regardless of how many times I read a technique, it didn't make sense. But when I came to do it in the lab, I understood it immediately. If you have a visual imagination, you can look at a diagram and it triggers your memory; but I learn by repetition or physically doing something.I'd love to experience life with a mind's eye. I think it'd be cool and beneficial to imagine things so vividly. If you offered me a day with a visual imagination, I'd be excited. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that while the number of nurses will increase by 19 percent by 2022, demand will grow faster than supply, and that there will be over one million unfilled nursing jobs by then.So what's the solution? Robots.Japan is ahead of the curve when it comes to this trend. Toyohashi University of Technology has developed Terapio, a robotic medical cart that can make hospital rounds, deliver medications and other items. It follows a specific individual, such as a doctor or nurse, who can use it to record and access patient data. This type of robot will likely be one of the first to be implemented in hospitals because it has fairly minimal patient contact.A robot's appearance affects its ability to successfully interact with humans, which is why the RIKEN-TRI Collaboration Center for Human-Interactive Robot Research decided to develop a robotic nurse called Actroid F. It is so human-like that some patients may not knowthe difference. This conversational robot companion has cameras in its eyes, which allow it to track patients and use appropriate facial expressions and body language in its interactions. During a month-long hospital trial, researchers asked 70 patients how they felt being around the robot and "only three or four said they didn't like having it around."It's important to note that robotic nurses don't decide courses of treatment or make diagnoses, though robot doctors and surgeons may not be far off. Instead, they perform routine and laborious tasks, freeing nurses up to attend to patients with immediate needs. This is one industry where it seems the interaction of robots will lead to collaboration, not replacement. 8.What does the author say about Japan?A.It ranks top in future robotics technology.B.It takes the lead in offering robotic nursing.C.It is in desperate need of registered nurses.D.It provides the best medication for the elderly.9.Which of the following best explains “implemented'' underlined in Paragraph 3? A.Cancelled. B.Constructed. C.Improved. D.Applied. 10.What do we know about the robot Actroid F?A.It has no difference from a human nurse.B.It gets favorable remarks from all the patients.C.It interacts with patients like a human companion.D.It uses body language even more effectively than words.11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Cooperation will not be replaced.B.Nurses will still play their roles.C.The robotics industry will be promising.D.Robots can meet patients' immediate needs. Why should most of us hate spiders when we know deeply how much good they do? Is it because they somehow seem so alien? After all, what other land creatures on earth have eight legs? What other creatures spin silk webs in which to catch and wrap their prey to preserve it for the future, much as we put food in the fridge to eat later? I do not personally suffer from arachnophobia, the name given to an abnormal fear of spiders, but I can't say that I like the little beasts. However, some people do, and they actually keep them as pets! There is a wide variety of spiders in the world. In fact it has been estimated that there are some 35,000 species——from little "money spiders" that live in your back garden, to the "black widow spider", and the “tarantula” ,the spider that is now sometimes kept as a pet.A tarantula can be any one of a large hairy spiders family and there are about 800 species of them. While experts can tell the difference between species at a glance, most are usually described in reference books as “rather slowly" with “a strong bite which may be poisonous”. They are covered with hairs which can cause a rash (皮疹)if they are handled. No one has calculated the number of human deaths caused by a bite from a tarantula perhaps because it has never happened, or happened so rarely, and indeed a tarantula will do no harm to anyone if handled correctly. Their disgusting image cannot belie their gentle nature but experts tell us not to handle a tarantula without expert advice.Tarantulas are popular as pets and it requires very little space to maintain them in excellent condition. They should be kept singly in a glass container, which need not be very large but should have a layer of stones in the bottom. They feed on insects, and while young tarantulas eat twice a week, adults will often eat no more than once every 10 days. You might like the idea of keeping a tarantula, but personally I am content with just watching them at a distance.12.According to the text, why do most people dislike spiders?A.They are abnormal beasts.B.They take food from fridges.C.They have unpleasant appearance.D.They make people suffer from arachnophobia.13.What do we know about the tarantula?A.It must be kept in groups.B.It feeds on poisonous insects.C.It doesn't belong to hairy spiders.D.It has mild nature if handled properly.14.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.The death caused by a tarantula.B.The number of human deaths.C.The bite from a tarantula.D.The rash caused by hairs.15.What's the best title for the text?A.Never judge a book by its cover.B.Nothing seek, nothing find.C.No sweet without sweat.D.Once bitten, twice shy.二、七选五Choosing the right career can be hard. Many people graduate from school or college not knowing what to do with their lives, and get a job without really thinking about it. For some, things work out fine. 16.Your working life lasts an average of forty years, so it's important to find a job you like and feel enthusiastic about. Luckily, there are many ways you can get help to do this. The Australian website, , compares choosing a career with going to the movies. Before you see a movie, you find out what films are showing. 17.— find out what jobs are available and what your options are. Next, decide which movie you like best; if you're not a romantic person, you won't want to see a love story. In other words, with your career, you should decide which job will suit your personality. 18.Meanwhile, you should find out where the theater is before you go. With your career, you need to find information about where you can work, how much you will earn, and how to get a job in that profession. So, how do you start? Begin by asking yourself some questions. 19.Have you travel overseas? Do you have any extra certificates besides your degree, such as a first aid license, for example? Your physical state and build can also affect which jobs you can do. A person, for example, who is allergic to cats would probably never become a veterinarian. Flight attendants, firefighters, and police officers have to be over a certain height, and be physically fit. 20.Are you outgoing and extroverted, or shy and introverted? If you like working alone, a job that requires lots of teamwork might not suit you.A.Your personality matters, too.B.Finally, decide how to get movie tickets.C.The site suggests you do the same with your career.D.Choosing a career can take time and a lot of thought.E.Some jobs require you to have certain life experiences.F.But others often find themselves stuck in a job they hate.G.When you know you can work in your dream job, you'll be glad.三、完形填空Pennsylvania is full of mysterious places! 影评:《我们能成为英雄》A group of superhero offspring teamup to save their parents and theworld in Robert Rodriguezadventure.2 Most parents think it’s a big deal totake their kids to Disney World or Uni-versal Studios for some family bonding.Sorry, but Robert Rodriguez has youall beat. When this prolific filmmakerwants to spend some quality time withhis children, he makes a superheromovie with them. The result can eitherbe labeled a sort-ofspinoff4 of 2005’s The Adventures ofSharkboy and Lavagirlducer, director, director of photography and editor. But he’s also outsourced6 many of the creative chores to his chil-dren: son Racer Max, who created the characters of Sharkboy and Lavagirl when he was only 7, serves as a pro-ducer and has an onscreen cameo; son Rebel composed the film’s score; son Rogue designed the alien spaceship that figures prominently in the extended climax; and daughter Rhiannon came up with many of the female characters’ attributes. Try not to think of that next time you get all verklempt7 hanging your kid’s drawings on the refrigerator.4 Oh, and then there’s the film it-self, which is fast-paced and funny enough to satisfy even those adults on Christmas morning who haven’t gotten enough sleep. The aspect that should particularly please younger viewers isways; Facemaker (Andrew Diaz), who can alter his appearance at will; and even Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s progeny Guppy (Vivien Blair), who can manipu-late water … or something like that.Frankly, it’s hard to keep track, al-though parents should be very grateful for the abandonment of the film’s origi nal plan to have one of the kids’ super-powers be the ability to emit toxic farts. Figuring out that they’re the only ones who can save the day, the kids escape from the facility and eventually engage in combat with the aliens aboard their giant vessel. The extended, elabor-ately staged action sequence10 provides the film’s biggest set piece11 and should inspire no end of copycat12 alien battles among the small fry13 at home.sequence(电影中表现同一主题或场面的)音乐等中的)固定套路。

打篮球的摔伤脚和医生的英语作文
打篮球的摔伤脚和医生的英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1A Painful Lesson on the Basketball CourtIt was a beautiful spring day and I was really looking forward to playing basketball with my friends after school. The weather was perfect - sunny and warm with a light breeze. We met up at the outdoor court near my house and started our usual pickup game.At first, everything was going great. I was making some good shots and we were all having a blast just being outside and active after sitting in class all day. But then disaster struck in the form of an awkward landing after going up for a layup.I came down on my right foot at an angle and immediately felt a sharp, stabbing pain shoot through my ankle. I crumpled to the ground, clutching my foot and trying not to scream out loud. My friends gathered around me with concerned looks on their faces."Dude, are you okay?" Kyle asked, his eyes wide. I shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes from the throbbing ache."I think I really hurt my ankle bad," I managed to get out through gritted teeth. "I need to get to the doctor."Josh and David helped me up and half-carried me over to Josh's car. I couldn't put any weight on my right foot at all without feeling like my ankle was going to split open. They gently maneuvered me into the backseat while Kyle grabbed my backpack. The drive to the urgent care clinic seemed to take forever. Every little bump and turn made me wince in pain. By the time we arrived, my ankle was swollen up like a grapefruit. Josh and David practically had to carry me inside.I gave my information to the receptionist, trying not to make too much of a scene even though I was sweating from the pain and feeling lightheaded. After what felt like an eternity, I was shown back to an examination room. The doctor came in and immediately started firing questions at me. "What happened? When did the injury occur? Does this hurt?" She gently pressed on my swollen ankle, causing me to yelp out loud."Agh! Yes, that really hurts!" I exclaimed. She nodded solemnly."I'm afraid it looks like you have a Grade 2 ankle sprain," she said. "We're going to have to do x-rays to rule out a fracture, but either way you're going to need to stay off that foot as much as possible for several weeks."The x-ray process was a nightmare. Just moving my foot slightly was sheer agony. But the images showed there was no break, just a very severe sprain and soft tissue damage. The doctor wrapped my foot up tightly in an air cast and gave me a set of crutches to use for getting around. She prescribed some heavy duty painkillers and anti-inflammatories, stressing how important it would be to keep my foot elevated and iced regularly.I had to miss the last couple weeks of the basketball season, which was a huge bummer. But my teammates were really supportive and brought me milkshakes from the diner when they came to hang out. Having my foot elevated for so long was maddening, but I tried to look on the bright side that at least it was giving me time to catch up on my favorite video games and shows.Physical therapy was grueling as I worked on regaining my range of motion and strength in my ankle. The therapists kept encouragingly telling me "No pain, no gain!" which was easy forthem to say when they weren't the ones enduring the agony. But I kept pushing myself because I was determined to get back on the court as soon as possible. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I was cleared to start practicing and playing again. That first game back was rough and I was definitely rusty. But just being able to run, jump, and play the game I loved again felt incredible after being sidelined for so long. While spraining my ankle was one of the most painful experiences of my life so far, I learned some important lessons from it. I have way more respect now for how serious ankle and foot injuries can be. I realized I need to work on my conditioning to prevent future injuries. And I feel incredibly grateful just to be able to walk around without pain, something I definitely took for granted before the injury. Most of all, I'll never forget the compassion and care I received from the doctors, nurses, and physical therapists who helped me through my recovery. Their expertise and encouragement kept me going even when I wanted to give up. I have a deeper appreciation now for just how vital medical professionals are. Granted, it would have篇2Title: My Basketball Injury and Doctor VisitIt was a typical Friday night and I was really looking forward to shooting some hoops with my buddies at the park outdoor court. Basketball is my favorite sport and I've been playing since I was a little kid. I'm pretty good too - I can drain three-pointers and do some sweet crossover dribbles. I had just gotten a new pair of basketball shoes that claimed to provide extra ankle support, so I was eager to try them out. When I got to the park, my friends Michael, Tony, and Jamal were already there warming up. We did some lay-up drills and then started running full court games of four-on-four. The night was cool with a light breeze - perfect basketball weather. On one play, I drove hard to the basket, did a slick spin move to get past my defender, and went up for what I thought would be an easy lay-in. But just as I left my feet, I came down awkwardly on my left foot. There was a sickening pop and a white-hot jolt of pain shot through my ankle."Aaarrgghh!" I cried out as I crumpled to the ground, writhing in agony. My ankle already started throbbing and swelling up."Dude, are you okay?" Jamal asked with concern as the other guys surrounded me. They could see my ankle was already turning purple and ballooning up like a tennis ball."I...I think I really messed up my ankle bad," I groaned through gritted teeth. The pain was intense and I felt queasy. The guys helped me hobble over to a bench where I gingerly propped up my throbbing foot. We tried icing it with the towel filled with ice cubes we always bring, but I knew this was no ordinary rolled ankle. I was pretty sure I had done something much worse that was going to require medical attention. After a few miserable minutes, Michael's mom came to pick us up. The guys helped carry me to the car and I stretched out in the backseat, keeping my foot elevated. Mrs. Martinez could see how much pain I was in and drove me straight to the emergency room at Memorial Hospital. I'd never been this injured before from playing basketball. I hoped I didn't break anything! When we arrived at the ER, I was rushed back in a wheelchair.A triage nurse looked at my swollen, twisted, and discolored ankle and her eyes widened."Oooh, that does not look good at all! You must have done a real number on that ankle. Let me go get a doctor right away," she said.A few minutes later, a young male doctor with a friendly smile came into the examination room."Hi there, I'm Dr. Chen. I heard you had quite a nasty spill on the basketball court tonight. Can you tell me what happened?" he asked.I explained how I landed funny going up for a lay-up and felt and heard a pop, then the immediate pain and swelling. He gently pressed around on my foot and ankle, causing me to wince."Well, based on the deformity, swelling, and your description of the injury, I'm fairly certain you have suffered a severe ankle sprain, possibly along with some torn ligaments or tendons," Dr. Chen explained. "We'll need to get some x-rays to make sure nothing is broken though."He ordered a portable x-ray machine and the technician took some images of my foot from different angles. Sure enough, the x-rays showed no broken bones, just severe soft tissue damage to my ankle joint."The good news is that nothing is fractured. The bad news is that you have what we call a grade 3 ankle sprain, which is a complete tear of the ligaments and tendons," Dr. Chen said, reviewing the x-ray films. "This is about as serious as an ankle sprain can get without breaking any bones."My heart sank a little at those words. I knew bad sprains could take a long time to recover from. So much for playing basketball for a while."So what do we do now, doc?" I asked apprehensively. "How long until I can play again?""First off, we need to get that swelling down and immobilize your ankle so those torn ligaments can start healing," he replied. "I'll get you set up with a rigid brace along with a pair of crutches so you can keep weight off that foot. You'll also need to ice it regularly and keep it elevated as much as possible over the next few days."A nurse came in and wrapped up my swollen foot and ankle tightly in an air cast. Then she fitted me with a pair of crutches and gave me instructions on how to properly use them when walking. Dr. Chen prescribed a heavy duty anti-inflammatory medication as well as a mild painkiller."I'm going to set you up for a follow-up appointment to see an orthopedic specialist in a few days," the doctor said. "Depending on the extent of the ligament and tendon damage, you may need surgery to repair it. If not, you'll still likely need several weeks, perhaps months, of rehab and physical therapy before that ankle is strong and stable enough to play basketball again."My heart sank even further at those words. Several months?! The thought of not being able to play ball for that long was really depressing. Still, I knew the doctor was right - I needed to let it properly heal, however long that took."Now, in the meantime, here's what I want you to do..." Dr. Chen went on to give me detailed instructions about keeping my leg elevated, icing it, doing gentle range of motion exercises, and being diligent about my rehab once it progressed to that stage. As dejected as I felt, I realized this was just a temporary setback. If I was disciplined about following the protocol for healing and rehab, my ankle would get strong again. I vowed to listen to the doctors, put in the hard work, and get back on the basketball court as soon as possible. This was just another challenge I'd overcome through perseverance and determination.篇3The Ankle Injury That Ended My Basketball SeasonIt was a crisp February evening and our team, the Lincoln High Lions, was deep into a tightly contested game against our rivals, the Madison High Mustangs. The score was knotted at 62 with just seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. I had the ball at the top of the key, putting a series of crossover dribbles on my defender to try and create some space. Just as I split the double team and drove hard to the hoop, their center came over to help on defense. As he slid across, his foot clipped the back of my planted ankle. I felt a searing pain shoot through my leg as my ankle rolled completely over in a stomach-churning way.I collapsed to the hardwood floor, writhing in agony and grabbing at my throbly pulsating ankle. The referee's whistle pierced the air as my teammates and coach rushed over, their faces etched with concern. Through gritted teeth, I told the coach it was likely a bad sprain at the very least based on the intense pain and swelling that was already starting. An athletic trainer came out and after examining it for a few minutes, confirmed it was almost certainly either a severe high ankle sprain or break. Either way, she said I needed X-rays immediately.Trying to put weight on it was excruciatingly painful, so two of my buddies had to help me hop off the court and into the locker room. I'll never forget the sinking feeling as I looked over at the scoreboard showing the score still tied at 62 with precious little time remaining. My chance at hitting the game-winner and being the hero was stolen from me in that split second. As thethrobbing intensified, all I could think was "Please don't be broken...please don't be broken."The ambulance arrived a short while later to take me to the emergency room. The pain meds they gave me took the edge off, but I was still in rough shape. X-rays confirmed my fears - it was indeed a broken ankle, or what the doctor called a distal fibula fracture. He said given the extent of the injury and the displaced bone, surgery would likely be needed to get it realigned and stabilized with a plate and screws. I felt sick to my stomach. The next couple of weeks were a blur of surgery, a hideously uncomfortable splint, and a wheel of intense pain meds that made me loopy. My mom had to help me get around on crutches and with basic self-care since I was non-weight bearing. Despite being surrounded by friends, family, and teammates who were incredibly supportive, I couldn't shake my depression over having my senior season abruptly torn away. All those hoursin the gym, the early morning weight room sessions, the running and court workouts...it all felt like it was for nothing now that I was stuck on the bench.About six weeks after the injury, I was able to finally get the stitches out and switch to a walking boot. That was a huge lift to my sprits, as it meant I was that much closer to recovery. However, the doctor warned me the total recovery and rehab process would still be 4-6 months for something as severe as a broken ankle that required surgery. It was disheartening to think I might not even be 100% healthy again until well into the summer.Despite feeling bummed, I refused to let the injury stop me from being present and supporting my team in whatever way I could. I attended every practice and game, cheering louder than anyone else on the bench and staying as engaged as possible with game planning and scouting reports. The guys were incredibly grateful to have me there alongside them, even if I couldn't be on the court actually playing. My first rehab appointment was really eye-opening. The physical therapist made me do some simple range-of-motion exercises that I couldn't even come close to performing correctly. My ankle flexibility was almost non-existent from beingimmobilized for so long. She warned me that regaining that mobility was going to require a ton of disciplined work, both at the facility and at home doing exercises multiple times per day. I thought I was mentally prepared for the challenge, but actually doing those first few rehab sessions showed me the tough road ahead. For the next several months, I spent pretty much all my free time outside of school at rehab appointments or doggedly doing the prescribed at-home exercises - resistance band work, stretches, balancing drills, and lots of tedious ankle mobility movements. It was like having a part-time job, except this one was incredibly boring, monotonous, and not paying me a dime. The process was agonizingly slow, and there were many days where I'd look down at my still-swollen, stiff ankle and wonder if it would ever be the same again. But I kept grinding away, fueled by my love for the game and my refusal to let this injury rob me of my basketball career. My hard work started paying off in the form of improved range of motion, less swelling and limping, and the ability to gradually put more weight on it. By the time summer rolled around, I was finally cleared to start light court work like simple form shooting and ball handling. That first day back on the court after beingaway for months was an incredibly uplifting and gratifying experience.Over the rest of the summer, I diligently built my way back up to playing live, going from working on my shot to doing light individual drills and finally to full court 5-on-5 work. My first few runs were painfully tough, as I had lost a lot of my conditioning, muscle memory on my moves, and "basketball legs" under me. There were days my ankle would threaten to swell up again, forcing me to back off for a bit and rehab some more. But I kept fighting, encouraged by my steady progress and motivation to get back to my pre-injury form. By the time our next season started that fall, I was finally cleared for full, unrestricted action. It took many more weeks of practice to get my timing, footwork, and overall feel for the game back. But I never stopped grinding, putting in extra time before and after practice to make up for the reps I had lost while injured. The night of our season opener, I had gleaming butterflies in my stomach as I pulled my jersey on. Simply being back on the court and healthy was a huge achievement after everything I had been through. When I checked into the game for the first time, the crowd gave me a incredible ovation that made me a bitemotional. My long journey back from the devastating ankle injury was finally complete.I'll never take being able to play the game I love for granted again after being robbed of that opportunity as a senior. The rehab process was brutal - physically grueling and mentally draining. But I persevered every step of the way, attacking my recovery with the same intensity and work ethic that made me a successful player in the first place. While it's an experience I never want to repeat, I'm grateful for what it taught me about determination, resiliency, and perspective. Not every teenager gets their senior season robbed from them by a freak injury like I did. Whenever I'm having a bad day or want to slack off, I just think back to those long months of rehab angst and it lites a fire under me. That drive is what's going to help me reach my ultimate goal - contributing for a college team once my high school playing days are done.。

Dogs bring out the best in us.~Author Unknown“M om! Get your dog off me!” I yelled, two seconds after walking through her door. It was Christmas Eve, one of the few days a year when I dress up.My thirteen-year-old daughter Desirée and I had arrived to pick my mom up for church, and before I even closed the door behind me, my mom’s Shih Tzu, Verdell, had gotten her light-gray hair all over my nice black pants.Instead of pulling Verdell away with both hands and messing up her own clothes, my mom grabbed the dog’s collar with her index finger. Verdell was so excited to see us that she spun around in circles trying to free herself. But instead of freeing herself, she twisted the collar around my mother’s finger, tightening it more. My mother’s finger was stuck and Verdell couldn’t breathe. My mom screamed and got down on her knees. I thought she was screaming in pain but it was m ore than that. She was trying to unfasten the collar but it wouldn’t budge and neither would the dog. Verdell was motionless.I could see the fear in my mom’s eyes as she realized her closest companion couldn’t breathe. She tried pulling her finger out but couldn’t. There was no time to spin the dog back around to free her. My mom frantically found scissors but I grabbed them away from her, fearing she would nick the dog trying to cut the collar with one hand. I wasn’t comfortable cutting it off with both h ands but I knew it was our only hope.My hands shook rapidly as I pushed the blade under Verdell’s collar, freeing her and my mom. Verdell’s head fell to the floor. I had never seen her still before.I put my ear to her chest to check for a heartbeat. There was nothing. I looked up at my mom, shook my head, and said, “She’s gone.”“Noooo! Nooo! Nooo,” my mom wailed. My daughter, who grew up with Verdell, ran to the bathroom and locked herself in. I stared at the dog in shock. I couldn’t believe Verdell was gone just like that. Only a couple of minutes earlier, she was greeting us at the door. It didn’t seem real. The lively little dog, who was never short of energy, lay there lifeless. My mother’s sobspenetrated my heart. I had never heard her cry like that. I thought her grief would kill her. I was never close to Verdell. I’m allergic to dogs, a bit of a germophobe in general and, as if she knew that, Verdell always went after me of all people. Aside from the shedding, she’d drool on me and even manage to slip her tongue into my mouth — a doggie French kiss.I don’t know what happened, but something clicked inside me. I grabbed Verdell’s slobbery mouth, took a deep breath, and proceeded to do CPR. I didn’t even know if CPR worked on pets or if I would remember all the steps, but it all came back to me. I tilted Verdell’s head back, put my mouth over hers, and breathed. Then… I pumped her chest.“One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousa nd,” I recited, and then breathed. “One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand.”I checked for her breath and heart beat. There was nothing.“One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand,” I said, and prayed to myself. Please Lord. Br ing her back for my mom. She can’t take this. Verdell’s all she has.My mom looked on quietly with hope and expectation, as if I knew what I was doing.I listened for Verdell’s heartbeat again. It wasn’t there.“One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-on e thousand,” I lamented.I checked Verdell’s vitals again. Nothing.“One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand.” Now I could barely get the words out. With tears rolling down my face, I checked Verdell one more time, looked up at my mom, and f inally said, “That’s it.”My mom burst into tears again, and I along with her. In the background, I could hear my daughter’s muffled cry coming from the bathroom. My mom and I looked down at Verdell. I zoned out looking into her eyes. For a second, I thought I saw one of them blink. I shook my head to snap myself out of it.“Did you see that,” my mom asked. “She blinked. There it is again!”I wondered if we were both wishful seeing. This can’t be, I thought. Then Verdell’s tail wagged.“Look, look, loo loo look… her her tail. Her tail!” my mom jumped up screaming.“She’s alive!” we cheered. “She’s alive! She’s alive!”I embraced my mom, not something we normally do in my undemonstrative family, as we watched Verdell slowly come back to life. Her blinking and tail wagging got faster and faster. Then Verdell lifted herself up by her front legs and joined our celebration as she joyfully ran around the house dragging her back legs behind her.Little by little, Verdell’s hind legs regained strength as well and she jumped all over us. I held her in my arms and she attacked my face with kisses. I didn’t resist. Verdell ran back and forth between me and my mom like a puppypleading to play. Then suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks and made a beeline for the bathroom where my daughter remained barricaded. Verdell scratched on the wooden door, but Desirée didn’t answer. She couldn’t hear anything over her sobs.“Desirée! Open up,” I yelled through the door.“Nooo!” she yelled back.“Open the door,” I said. “Someone wants to see you.”“No!” she shouted. “I don’t want to see anyone right now.”“It’s Verdell,” I said. “She’s alive!”Desirée opened the door just a crack to peek out but enough for Verdell to push her way in. Desirée looked down at Verdell in shock. And th en excitement.“Verdell, Verdell, Verdell,” she screamed, through her strained voice.Desirée came out with Verdell in her arms. The dog squirmed, wanting to get down and run around some more. We called an emergency veterinarian. He wasn’t surprised by our Christmas miracle and said CPR is often used on animals. The vet asked a few questions about Verdell, congratulated me, and said we didn’t need to bring her in. I thought it was all too good to be true but he assured us that she was fine.We never made it to church that evening but Jesus definitely made His way to us. Verdell and I had a special bond after that night, a special connection that only we shared.【词汇过关】请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。

15 Spin Off Films No One Asked For15部没人想要的电影外传From highly questionable resurrections to getting rid of everything good about the original we look at Spin off films no one ever asked for从令人无语至极的吐便当到完全毁掉原作的电影,本期我们盘点这些没人要求去拍的电影外传和续集15 – Elektra,(艾丽卡)Before the Avengers,在复仇者联盟之前there was an attempt to create曾有个以超胆侠为起点a Marvel comic universe with ‘Daredevil’ as a starting point.创造一个具有漫威特色世界观的尝试Even though ‘Daredevil was critically p anned尽管超胆侠有拍续集it made a fairly decent profit并且赚取了可观的收益and plans went through with the first spin off,并驱使漫威计划拍摄一部由珍妮弗加纳主演centred around Jennifer Garner’s character “Elektra”的角色艾丽卡为中心的外传even though she had the slight problem of being killed off in the movie.尽管她在电影中已经领完便当But with a little help of plot magic但在主角光环的映照下she was resurrected to stab sand bags yet again.她复活了并再次刺沙包However ‘Daredevil’ had been so badly received by comic fans然而“超胆侠”的这部外传在粉丝中差评如潮and the public Elektra’s fate was already sealed.而艾丽卡的命运也是被雪藏This was one character that probably should have stayed dead.其实这角色本就该死掉的14 –Get Smart’s Bruce and Lloyd: out of control,糊涂侦探:失控的布鲁斯和洛依德Banking on the 2008 remake being a huge hit, the studio decided to capitalize on what would clearly be the break out characters of the film – the titular Bruce and Lloyd寄望于2008年糊涂侦探重制大获成功,电影公司投资拿电影配角做续集的主角,标题为:布鲁斯和洛依德。
But you might be asking who the hell are Bruce and Lloyd? Which would mean studios SUCK at predicting popular characters.但你可能会说他喵的谁是布鲁斯和洛依德啊?这意味着拍摄方在决定谁是新主角方面做得很糟。
Bruce and Lloyd were the geeky tech guys of CONTROL, a parody of Q from the Bond films. Appealing mainly to audience for then ‘Heroes’ star Masi Oka playing Bruce布鲁斯和洛依德是让人讨厌的控制技术人员,是007系列电影中Q先生的拙劣翻版。
所以这部电影主要吸引观众的,是由“超级英雄”明星冈政伟扮演的布鲁斯。
Released direct to DVD only 10 days after the theatrical release of Get Smart, the film was a product of the bloated publicity budget, existing only as an advertisement on store shelves.糊涂侦探在电影院上映10天后就直接发布DVD,这只是庞大宣传预算的产物,仅作为广告存在于商店的商品陈列架上However while Get Smart was a huge hit no one really wanted more Bruce or Lloyd and their adventures ended there with the film remaining only now as a marketing oddity.然而糊涂侦探大获成功,没人会再想布鲁斯和洛依德,他们的冒险到此结束。
但这部电影的营销方式直到现在都被认为是异类。
13 – Ace Ventura, Jr.: Pet Detective,神探飞机头3Yes this actually exists.没错,这片子的确存在One of the icons of the 90’s, Jim Carrey’s popular Ace Ventura sat dormant for 14 years before it was decided that the series would spin off the Ace’s son.在决定拍电影主角儿子的后传之前,90年代偶像之一,金凯瑞的著名电影《神探飞机头》已经沉寂了14年While the character was never established in the original films, someone felt it was a great idea to make and Ace Ventura film without Ace Ventura.在片中角色不是之前所有的,有些人认为一个没有埃斯·文图拉的神探飞机头是一个好主意And With Ace Ventura Jr. being in his early teens, the story loses all of the crude humor of Carry’s character again leaving the audience to just question “why bother?”尽管此时二代目神探飞机头十几岁了,整个故事却失去了凯瑞的无厘头幽默,让观众们问道:”何苦呢?“Oh but at least it does explain Ace sr.’s fate, apparently he get lost in the Bermuda Triangle, which is probably also where the unsold copies of the film were dumped.噢,至少它交代了初代目神探飞机头的命运,他貌似在百慕大三角迷失了。
这可能是未售出的电影副本被抛弃了吧。
12 – Ewoks – Caravan of Courage, Battle of Endor,伊渥克族:恩多之战‘Return of the Jedi’ is criticised mostly for one thing, the Ewoks. Those cute cuddly toy selling Muppet teddy bears, that were just too ridiculous for a film where a space wizard samurai fights a giant slug gangster.星球大战3:绝地归来被人吐槽的主要是伊渥克族。
这些可爱的待售提线泰迪熊,对于一部有着太空向导武士与巨型蛞蝓黑帮火拼剧情的电影来说实在是太扯了Regardless the Ewoks were a big seller with children and it made total sense that more Ewoks would be a good thing – enter Caravan of Courage and Battle of Endor.儿童是伊渥克族的大买家,它给人们的总体感受是:在《勇敢的马队》和《恩多之战》里,他们都是好人Two cheesy TV films that were really just toy adverts in disguise.而上述两部唯美的电视片实际上却是“伪装”好的玩具广告The films are mostly remembered today for giving us creepy GIF’s of Ewoks hugging children and for giving a small glimpse into how Lucas would screw up the prequel trilogy.这电影现在给我们唯一的印象就是那些伊渥克族拥抱孩子的吓人GIF图,还有就是让我们大概了解卢卡斯是如何弄糟前传三部曲的Caravan of courage was particularly supervised by Lucas after the embarrassment that was “the star wars holiday special” and doesn’t fare much better另外说一句,《勇敢的马队》是卢卡斯在“星球大战特别假日”节目遭遇手势尴尬且经营不善时特别监制的。
11 – US Marshalls,(美国警官)With The Fugitive being one of the biggest hits of 1993 it would make sense that a sequel would be on the way. Even though a sequel would make no sense to the story as everything is resolved. 随着电影逃亡者1993年的大成功,它的续集的制作就被提上了日程。
虽然续集的存在对一个一切都解决的故事来说毫无意义。
