It's an interesting and original form of tourism which will no doubt revolutionize real travel, and even make actual life somewhatdifferent. On the banks of the River Rin, in the city of St. Alban, you can now take a half virtual, half real tour on horseback with the help of a piece of electronic equipment, earphones, and a science-fiction style visor (面罩) which contains a small camera. This modern equipment is called Life Clipper. It is the original idea of both Swiss inventor Jan Torpus, who studied in Barcelona, and German technology expert Nikolas Neecke.According to the instructions for the Life Clipper, once a tourist is equipped, he'll need a guide to assist him to get used to seeing the world8through the visor. Once on the Rin riverbank, the tourist starts his journey with the sounds of the water, which are created by sensors(传感器).From here the tourist travels on foot to theSt. Alban neighborhood, feeling and sensing the view with his hands, nose and mouth. What he sees are images between the year 1000 and the year 1500: carriages, princes, etc. This project sounds like something from science fiction and it looks funny when people in a visor try to touch a horse which isn't there. So far, this tourism has been a success only in Basilea, and will be introduced anywhere else in the world in the near future. This is a fun and unusual way of travelling. Surely it won't be long before we see a new and improved form of Life Clipper - one that isn't just for sightseeing, but also for other parts of our life. For example, instead of taking a bus to the office or university, we just sit at home and put on the visor, feeling as if we were m a different place, and virtual work becomes reality.41. As we drove along, my spirits went up again, and I turned, with pleasure, to the thought of the new life which I was entering. But though it was not far past the middle of September, the heavy clouds and strong north-easterly wind combined to make the day extremely cold; and the journey seemed a very long one, so that it was nearly one o’clock before we reached the place of our destination. Yet when we entered the gateway, my heart failed me, and I wished it were a mile or two farther off. For the first time in my life I must stand alone: there was no retreating now. I must enter that house, and introduce myself among its strange people. But how was it to be done? True, I was near nineteen; but, thanks to the protecting care of my mother and sister, I well knew that many a girl of fifteen, or under, was gifted with a more womanly address, and greater ease and self-possession, than I was. Yet, anyway. I would do very well, after all; and the children, of course, I should soon be at ease with them."Be calm, be calm, whatever happens," I said within myself; and truly I was so fully occupied in steadying my nerves and keeping down the rebellious beat of my heart that when I was admitted into the hall and into the presence of Mrs. Bloomfield, I almost forgot to answer her polite greeting; and it afterwards struck me that the little I did say was spoken in the tone of one half-dead or half-asleep.With due politeness, however, she showed me my bedroom, and left me there to take a little refreshment for a little while and led me into the dining-room. Some beefsteaks and potatoes were set before me; and while I dined upon these, she sat opposite, watching me (as I thought) and trying to keep something like a conversation—consisting chiefly of commonplace remarks. In fact, my attention was almost wholly absorbed in my dinner: not from appetite, but from the toughness of the beefsteaks, and the numbness of my hands.“I have had so little time to attend to their education myself, but I think they are clever children, and very willing to learn, especially the little boy; he is, I think, the flower of the flock— a generous, noble-spirited boy, one to be led, but not driven, and remarkable for always speaking the truth.” “His sister Mary Ann will require watching,” continued she, “but she is a very good girl on the whole, though I wish her to be kept out of the nursery as much as pos sible, as she is now almost six years old, and might acquire bad habits from the nurses. I have ordered her bed to be placed in your room, and if you will be so kind as to look after her washing and dressing, and take charge of her clothes, she needs to have nothing further to do with the nursery maid.”I replied I was quite willing to do so; and at that moment the children entered the room. Tom Bloomfield was a well-grown boy of seven. Mary was a tall girl, for her age of six, somewhat dark like her mother. The second sister was Fanny, a very pretty little girl, looking little younger than Mary. The remaining one was Harriet, a little broad, fat, merry, playful thing of scarcely two, whom I had more desire for than all the rest — but with her I had nothing to do.1. Which of the following statements best describes how the writer felt when she entered Mrs. Bloomfield's home?A. She was nervous, dissatisfied with her manners but still confident.B. She was cold, hungry but eager to see all the children in the family.C. She was frightened, nervous and regretful about her decision.D. She was calm, confident and very happy with all the family.2. What job would the writer take in Mrs Bloomfield's home?A. A nursery maid.B. A house cleaner.C. A home cook.D. A family teacher.3. Which of the following was TRUE according to the passage?A. The writer had some difficulty with her lunch because of the tough food and the cold.B. The delicious food took the writer's attention away from Mrs. Bloomfield’s words.C. All the children were well educated before the writer came to the family.D. All the children in the family were looked after by Mrs Bloomfield herself.4. From the passage, we can infer that ______.A. Mrs Bloomfield would treat the writer kindly and help her a lotB. the youngest girl Harriet would be the writer’s favorite studentC. the writer would take on more responsibilities than she shouldD. Tom Bloomfield would be the cleverest of all the children【参考答案】1—4、ADAC2016高考训练题。

The latest research suggests that the key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not I. Q. , a generally bad predictor of success. Instead, it’s purposeful practice. Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. If you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you’d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average language ability. It wouldn’t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same town, had the same family background, or, shared the same birthday. This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self. It would give her some idea of a fascinating circle she might someday join. It would also help if one of her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strong sense of insecurity and fuelling a desperate need for success. Armed with this ambition, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary know-ledge of her field. She’d be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly understand its inner workings. Then she would practise writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking anderror-focused. By practising in this way, she delays the automatizing process. Her mind wants to turn conscious, newly learned skills into unconscious, automatically performed skills. By practising slowly, by breaking skills down into tiny parts and repeating, she forces the brain to internalize a better pattern of performance. Then she would find an adviser who would provide a constant stream of feedback, viewing her performance from the outside, correcting the smallest errors, pushing her to takeon tougher challenges. By now she is redoing problems—how do I get characters into a room—dozens and dozens of times. She is establishing habits of thought she can call upon in order to understand or solve future problems. The primary quality our young writer posse sses is not some mysterious genius. It’s the ability to develop a purposeful, laborious and boring practice routine. The latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected. Public discussion i s affected by genetics and what we’re “hard-wired” to do. And it’s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But the brain is also very plastic. We construct ourselves through behaviour.1. The passage mainly deals with .A. the function of I. Q. in cultivating a writerB. the relationship between genius and successC. the decisive factor in making a geniusD. the way of gaining some sense of distinction2. By reading novels and writers’ stories, the girl could.A. come to understand the inner structure of writingB. join a fascinating circle of writers somedayC. share with a novelist her likes and dislikesD. learn from the living examples to establish a sense of security3. In the girl’s long painstaking training process, .A. her adviser forms a primary challenging force to her successB. her writing turns into an automatic pattern of performanceC. she acquires the magic of some great achievementsD. she comes to realize she is “hard-wired” to write4. What can be concluded from the passage?A. A fuelling ambition plays a leading role in one’s success.B. A responsible adviser is more important than the knowledge of writing.C. As to the growth of a genius, I. Q. doesn’t matter, but just his/her efforts.D. What really matters is what you do rather than who you are.【参考答案】1—4、CABD2016高考模拟题。

2016山东临清市高考英语二轮阅读理解选编练习(3)阅读理解训练So many of us hold on to little complaints that may have come from an argument, a misunderstanding, the way we were raised, or some other painful events. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.A friend of mine, recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she said, “I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize.” After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff(问题)” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right. You'll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right,” they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But, if for some reason they don't, that's okay too. You'll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you'll be more peaceful yourself.文章大意:该文章主要告诉我们在与别人争执时先向对方道歉,缓解朋友之间的关系,享受友情。

Which is safer --- staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, or working at the office? Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, which is very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemical industry? Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that of almost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home. The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this that chemical accidents so newsworthy. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947), Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552. The Pemex fire at a storage plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542 lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal. Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus the Texas City was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate, which is safe unless stored in a great quantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which took risks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accident shows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger on their doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaders were incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse by an overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reaction of exploding storage tanks. Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not explode. Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighters would all have died.1. According to the passage, the chemical accident that caused by the fault of management happened at _________.A. Texas cityB. FlixboroughC. SevesoD. Mexico City2. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Working at the office is safer than staying at home.B. Travelling to work on public transport is safer than working at the office.C. Staying at home is safer than working in the chemical industry.D. Working in the chemical industry is safer than traveling by air.3. From the passage we know that ammonium nitrate is a kind of _____.A. natural gas, which can easily catch fireB. fertilizer, which can't be stored in a great quantityC. poisonous substance, which can't be used in overcrowded areasD. fuel, which is stored in large tanks4. From the discussion among some experts we may conclude that _____.A. to avoid any accident we should not repair the facilities in chemical industryB. the local authorities should not be concerned with the production of thechemical industryC. all these accidents could have been avoided or controlled if effective measureshad been takenD. natural gas stored in very large tanks is always safe【参考答案】1—4、BDBC2016高考训练题。

I ran into my parents' room to find Dad. When I saw him on the phone, he was crying. I'd never seen my dad cry before. My heart sank. What possibly could have happened?"Max, I'm so sorry," I heard him say. That's when it hit me. I knew that Suzie had died.Max has been my dad's best friend for years. Suzie, his daughter, had a rare disease that mainly affected her body. Her brain was OK. She knew what was going on; she knew that shehad problems and was different from other kids. Once she told her dad that she wished she could die and be born in a different body. Yet although she couldn't live a normal life ,she was still happy. When Suzie and I were little, we spent quite a bit of time together. As we grew up, we grew apart. She lived in New York, and I lived in the Midwest. When Suzie was ten she had to live ina hospital in Virginia. My whole body was shaking as I picked up the shovel, but I'm glad I did it.When Suzie and I first started calling one another, I thought it would be more of a burden on me, but I was completely wrong. Kingda Ka, the tallest roller coaster (过山车) on Earth, drops its passengers a life-flashing 418 feet. Ferrari World's Formula Rossa, the fastest, takes riders' breath away at speeds of up to150 mph. BRC Imagination Arts, a Southern California design firm, has proposed something entirely new: a ride that creates the sensation of zero gravity for up to eight seconds at a time.BRC drew its concept from the "Vomit Comet," the plane NASA uses to train astronauts. Its proposed theme-park ride would travel up and then back, similar to the existing "Superman: Escape from Krypton" coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. But unlike Superman and other open-car coasters, the vomit-comet ride would be fully enclosed. Riders would enjoy the illusion of floating within a stable chamber. To create that illusion, a special motor system would speed coasters up the track with great precision(精确度). As the coaster approached a top speed of more than 100 mph, it would suddenly and ever so slightly slow down—just enough to throw the passengers up from their seats and then quickly adjust its speed to fly in formation with and around the passengers. As the coaster reached the top of the track and began to drop back down, the computer system would continue to match its speed to that of the falling passengers, extending the sensation of weightlessness for several additional seconds, and finally rapidly slow down to a stop back at the base station.Roller coasters typically cost no more than $30 million, but the zero-gravity ride would cost $50 million or more, to a large extent because the precision-response propulsion system(推进系统) is so complex. But if someone were to write a check today, Rogers says, his company could be sending riders on weightless journeys by the end of 2014.1. What makes BRC's coaster different?A. It's the tallest roller coaster in the States.B. It's the fastest roller coaster on Earth.C. It can bring a sensation of zero gravity to its riders.D. It is a NASA product.2. Why would people in BRC's coaster have an illusion of floating in the chamber?A. Because it's designed with the inspiration of Superman.B. Because a special functioning motor system is applied to it.C. Because the coaster can approach a top speed of more than 100 mph.D. Because the coaster would cost $20 million more than normal ones.3. At what point could a rider begin to feel weightless?A. When the coaster reduced its speed immediately after it reached its top speed.B. When the coaster began to increase its speed.C. When the coaster reduced its speed to a stop back at the base station.D. When the coaster reached the top of the track.4. What can we infer from the passage?A. BRC is a famous design firm.B. You feel like a superman when riding BRC coaster.C. BRC's budget can't make the project complete until 2014.D. Kingda Ka and Ferrari World's Formula Rossa will close down soon.【参考答案】1—4、CBAC2016高考训练题。

Lack of parent willpower may contribute more to juvenile obesity thanunder-exercising or overeating.Research suggests that having overweight parents is a big influence upon a child’s weight, with one study finding that children with overweight parents were four times more likely to be overweight themselves. The findings add heat to an already fierce political debate over childhood obesity. The Prime Minister, John Howard, last week decided that $116 million be used for programs to deal with obesity, while the Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, recently announced that his party would move to protect children from unhealthy food advertisements..Clare Colins , a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle, believes such programs will definitely fail unless they influence the way of life of whole families. "If we can’ t get parents to take action against their own weight problems, then we can’ t expect to influence their kids," she said. However, Professor, Louise Baur from the Children’ s Hospital at Westmead, doubts whether adult education programs offer any solution to weight problems. "Many parents know they need to lose weight and they knew it influences their kids, but they lack the willpower to do anything about it.The l0-year study of 150 American children found two-thirds of children with overweight parents became overweight. Only one in six children whose parents were of average weight became overweight. The president of the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity, Associate Professor Gary Wittert, said parents needed help in doing their job and the Opposition Party’s policy(政策) might be on the right track."We know that driving without a seat belt is unsafe, s o we make law against it,” he said."Obesity is a major public health concern, so why shouldn’t we change the law regarding unhealthy food ads?"1. You know eating fruit and vegetables does good. But do you know it can also make you look good? People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found. Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look more healthy and an extra 3.3 portions could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange,it was not known a small increase was perceptible(被觉察)to others—and was seen as appealing.A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three weeks. Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)—which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red colour—and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.1. What do we know from the research?A. If you take in a little more fruit and vegetables, you will obviously look more attractive in three weeks.B. The researchers took the pictures of the 35 people in the research at different stages.C. Increasing your intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day can greatly improve your health.D. People who increased their intake of greens by 3.3 portions a day were found the most attractive after six weeks.2. Which of the following is NOT the function of carotenoids?A. They can protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays.B. They can prevent heart disease and cancer.C. They can prevent age-related diseases.D. They can keep you in good health.3. Which of the statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A. We've already known eating extreme amounts of carrots can turn skin orange.B. Are you a saver or a spender?"A penny saved is a penny earned." This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money. "_________________________" is another way to talk about saving for the future.People who hate to spend money are known as "tightwads," while those who like to get the most value for their money are called "thrifty." A thrifty person is different from a "spendthrift." A spendthrift is someone who spends wastefully. People like that are often said to spend money "like a drunken sailor" or "like there's no tomorrow."In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. These include banks and credit unions. Credit unions are cooperatives for people who have some kind of connection. For example, the members might work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are nonprofit organizations.Credit unions, banks and other financial institutions pay interest on savings accounts. But the interest rates are low. Certificates of deposit(存款证) pay higher returns. With a certificate of deposit, or CD, a person agrees not to withdraw the money for a certain period of time. This term could be anywhere from a few months to several years. Longer terms, and larger amounts, pay higher interest. People can withdraw their money early but they have to pay a fine.In a number of countries, people have been saving less over the years. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is a group of thirty-four countries. The OECD says in 1990, Americans had a household savings rate of seven percent. This year, that rate is expected to be a little more than four percent and many European countries have higher rates like the UK and France , but Americans save more than families in countries like Japan and South Korea.1.Which of the following proverbs can be filled in the blank in Paragraph 2?A.Health is wealth.B.Money is a good servant but a bad masterC.Put money away for a rainy day.D.Money doesn’t grow on trees.2.If you have $10,000, which of the following may help you get higher interest ?A.Choose certificates of deposit for one year.B.Put the money in banks for one year.C.Put the money in credit unions for one year.D.Choose certificates of deposit for one year but withdraw the money ahead of time. 3.What does the passage mainly talk about ?A.Different choices of putting money away in the US.B.The importance of saving money.C.How to put money into banks.D.The household savings rate in the US.参考答案1—3、CAA【阅读理解】人物故事类阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Experts believe that storms and severe weather in North America and Asia have disrupted bird flight paths across the world and swept huge numbers of bird species towards the British Isles.Birds flying to the other side of the Atlantic or to the Pacific to lay their eggs have been trapped in Britain and Ireland, adding their numbers to native species, and causing great excitement in the bird-watching community.Local birdwatchers have already observed a total of 442 species in the British Isles this year. The highest number ever seen in one year is 445, in 2008.“We only need four more to break our record,” said Lee Evans, who runs the British Birding Association. “With three months to go I’m sure we’ll do it.”Last month an extremely rare Siberian Rubythroat bird was seen in Scotland, sending hundreds of birdwatchers north in the hope of catching a glimpse of this colourful Asian beauty. Another very uncommon bird, the bufflehead duck was cited in Cornwell and caused similar excitement. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Evans. “The poor thing was completely knackered. It must have been blown to England by the storms while trying to fly from Canada to the southern United States for the winter. That’s 3000 miles!”Evans said that global warming over the past decade was playing a key role in transforming bird movements across the world. In addition, melting Arctic sea ice may also be opening up bird flight paths over the North Pole, making it easier for birds from the Pacific — such as the slaty-backed gull and tufted puffin, both of which appeared in London earlier this year — to reach Britain.Bird-watching is becoming an increasingly popular hobby among all age groups, added Evans. “A fifth of our m embers are under 18. This is a round-the-year hobby that you can enjoy from the kitchen window or from a car. More and more people arebird-watching, and as a result more and more unexpected species are being spotted in the British Isles.”1. What is the passage mainly about?A. The results of global warming.B. Changes in the British bird population.C. Increasing environmental pollution.D. Worsening British weather.2. The underlined word “knackered” is closest in meaning to __________.A. boredB. knockedC. spottedD. tired3. How many more bird species are needed to equal the British bird-watching record?A. 3.B. 4.C. 442.D. 445.4. According to the passage, which of the following birds comes from Asia?A. Slaty-backed gull.B. Bufflehead.C. Rubythroat.D. Tufted puffin.5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible reason for seeing more bird species in Britain?A. You’re in a department store and you see a couple of attractive young women looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation:“I can’t believe it—a Lorenzo Bertolla! They are almost impossible to find. Isn’t it beautiful? And it’s a lot cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome.”They leave and you go over to see this incredible sweater. It’s nice and the price is right. You’ve never heard of Lorenzo Bertolla, but those gir ls looked really stylish. They must know. So, you buy it. You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency. They are actually paid to go from store to store, talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes.Every day we notice what people are wearing, driving and eating. If the person looks cool, the product seems cool, too. This is the secret of undercover marketing. Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it.Undercover marketing is important because it reaches peopl e that don’t pay attention to traditional advertising. This is particularly true of the MTV generation—consumers between the age of 18 and 34. It is a golden group. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don’t trust ads.So advertising agencies hire young actors to “perform”in bars and other places where young adults go. Some people might call this practice deceptive (骗人的), but marketing executive Jonathan Ressler calls it creative. “Look at traditional advertising. Its effectiveness is decreasing.”H owever, one might ask what exactly is “real” about of young women pretending tobe enthusiastic about a sweater? Advertising executives would say it’s no less real than an ad. The difference is that you know an ad is trying to persuade you to buy something. You don’t know when a conversation you overhear is just a performance.1. My last days of my month-Song trip to Guatemala found me self-reflective and grateful. I had rejoined the living after spending two days in bed, thanks to a terrible period of food poisoning that had me running from both ends.I spent 36-plus hours locked up in my hotel room in a cold sweat and grasping my stomach in pain. There may have been a bit of crying. There also may have been a few out-loud prayers to God begging him to make it stop and asking why I had been chosen to go through this. I should mention that I am not religious.I didn’t have a mobile phone and my hotel room was not equipped with a fixed line, so I had no way to get in contact with my mommy or my loving boyfriend so that I could share my suffering.Days later, I had recovered fully. While the bug (虫子) ran its course, I had to give some thanks to the staff at my hotel in Guatemala for being so sweet. They came to check on me on a couple of occasions once they realized I wouldn't/couldn't leave the room. They offered me tea and to call a doctor. I declined both offers but was moved by their kindness.I may get sick often when on the road, but I had to say that the worst thing ever is to get sick while traveling alone. If I am sick, only when people I know and care about are around does it make me feel better. It’s not even about them playing Florence Nightingale -sometimes, just having them there and being able to feel their presence is enough to make you feel stronger.1.What is the best title for the text?A. Eddie Mckay,a once-forgotten pilot,is a subject of great interest to a group of history students in Canada. It all started when Graham Broad,a professor at the University of Western Ontario, found McKay’s name in a footnote in a book about university history. McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友)who had served during the First World War,but his name was unfamiliar to Broad,a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity,Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆)in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged,he finally gave up. On his way out,Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture,he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find,Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually,a picture came into view.Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron(中队)as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.” Yet,in a letter home,McKay refused to take credit, saying that Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane.McKay’s war records were destroyed during a World War Ⅱ air bombing on London—anexplanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students,a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in November 2007. “I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word‘deceased’ (阵亡)next to his name,” said Corey Everrett,a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us,but instead of finishing his time at Western,he chose to fight and die for his country.”1.
