Havre de Grace
Years ago, Americans used decoys (假肢) to hunt ducks and other waterbirds. Those days are gone. But collecting artful decoys is now popular. Havre de Grace is a town in the America state of Maryland, one part of which is famous for its wildlife. Captain Jobes is one of the top decoy cravers in Havre de Grace. Hunters use decoys to get ducks and geese to come close enough to shoot. The wooden birds are so highly respected here that Havre de Grace calls itself the decoy capital of the world. It also has a museum with more than 1,000 decoys. Most were hand made.

Firstly, what confuses me most is the proper use of tenses. I often mix up tenses, leading to low scores on my writings, What’s more, I s truggle to find appropriate wordsto express myself accurately. Despite my massive efforts to expand my vocabulary, words still fail me when I need to write. In addition, I find it difficult to make my writing well-structured and coherent, which frustrates me a lot.I’d appreciate it if you could give me some practical suggestions on my problems. Looking forward to your reply.Yours,Li Hua第二节(满分25分)Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I quickly glued together whatever materials I could find, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. However, several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed buildings. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and their constructions were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was apparent that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had. That taught me a great lesson. I learned from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks ontime, but I also felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr. Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.听力录音稿Text 1M: Do you have any idea what’s wrong with my houseplant It gets plenty of sun and enough plant food...W: Are you watering it too often Remember this plant comes from the desert where there’s hardly any rain.M: Ah..Maybe that’s the problem!Text 2M: It seems to be human nature to pursue what we don’t have. Tall people want to be shorter, and short people want to be taller... W: I know. For example, when I was younger, my cousin always wanted my golden hair, and I wanted dark hair like hers.Text 3W: Hi, are there any tickets left for tonight’s concertM: Sorry, they’re sold out. But I can put you on the waiting list, in case there are any cancellations tonight. Would you like me to do thatW: Oh, yes, please. Let me give you my phone number.Text 4M: Oh, this is so annoying! We’ve been driving around for ages, and I haven’t seen a single space.W: There’s a street party going on in town today. That’s probably why it’s busy. Let’s try the supermarket... You can park there for free as long as you buy something.Text 5W: So, tell me a little bit about the character you played in your new film Last Weekend.M: Well, Jake is a sort of the ‘everyman’ character. He doesn’t have any special talents. In fact, he lives a pretty boring life, until his old friend Maggie returns to town...Text 6M: Can I borrow your phone for a second Mine is dead, and I can’t find my charger.W: Sure.M: Thanks. Hey, what’s wrong with your screen It’s all dark and the colors look strange.W: Oh! I’ve been using an app called “Sunset” to help me sleep at night.M: Really HowW: Well, studies show that too much blue light from screens can make sleeping difficult. So, in the evenings, the app puts a red filter (滤光器) over the screen to cancel it out.M: Oh, interesting. Does it helpW: Yeah, I think so! I also listen to white noise, which helps me fall asleep too.Text 7M: Can we do something about the temperature in here I have so many emails to deal with today, but my hands are so cold that I can hardly type my report!W: I know. I’ve been struggling too. But the heat probably won’t be turned on until the end of the month.M: Why notW: It’s a part of the company’s plans to save energy.M: Well, I can understand that. But how are we supposed to work in these conditionsW: I guess we always have the choice to work from home.M: True. But before my youngest daughter starts school, it’s just too difficult for me to do that. I wouldn’t be able to focus.W: Then I think we should talk to the boss about what can be done, otherwise people will start getting ill.Text 8W: Well, here we are! I can’t wait to get inside and see what’s on offer!M: I heard this year’s Mini Fair is going to be even bigger and better than last year’s. It won’t disappoint us.W: Oh really I had to go to a boring work event at that time, so I couldn’t come last year.M: Yes! I got so many things for my model train set.W: Like whatM: Well, the coolest things I got were some tiny little trees. They looked so real.W: Wow!M: I’m hoping t he guy who sells them is here again this year.W: I hope so! Now that I’m satisfied with the inside part of my dolls’ house, I want to focus on creating the garden. So, it would be great to get some little plants and trees. What about youM: I want some little model cars and people to add to my train station scene. But I need to find a toilet first.W: Over there, by the restaurant hall.M: Great. Meet you in five minutes, by the ticket desk.Text 9W: Hi, are you here for the tourM: Yes, I’m Michael Green. Are you the head girlW: That’s right. I’m Jayne Palmer. You look a bit older than the kids I usually show around the school!M: Ha-ha! Yeah, I’ll be sixteen next month.W: My birthday is in October, too!M: ReallyW: Yeah! So, why are you changing schoolsM: Well, my mom got a new job in this area, so we’re moving here. I’ve heard good things about this place.W: Well, as you can see, we have some great facilities... Here are the basketball courts. Then just behind them, you’ll see the football field and the running track. And that building over there is our swimming pool.M: Wow! There wasn’t room for anything like this at my previous school. I was on the swimming team, but we had to travel to use the city pool for our practices.W: Well, we’ve certainly got plenty of space. The arts teaching here is also excellent. We have a music studio and our own theater. M: Amazing!W: So, where would you like to go firstM: Well, I’m quite interested to see the science facilities. I’m hoping for a career in medicine.W: Okay, great! Well, the laboratories have all been updatedrecently, so we’ve got some really good equipment. Follow me. Text 10On my recent business trip to Shanghai, I met up with a local friend who took me out for a very interesting evening meal. At the Community AI Canteen, everything is done by robots. When you walk in there, you place your order on a screen. Using robotic arms, the intelligent cooking system then cooks your food before packing it up... It even adjusts the temperature, depending on whether you want to eat it straight away or take it home with you! To pay, you place your food on a smart cash desk, which immediately calculates (计算) the cost. There’s even a 24-hour noodle machine just outside, which offers hot and fresh food around the clock. The canteen offers a huge amount of choices and the dishes taste great. It is really fun to get “a taste of the future”. However, I’m not sure I would like all restaurants to be run by robots. I can see the benefits for busy families or office workers needing a quick lunch, but what about lonely older people who would miss the human touch I do think we will see more places like this in the future, though. At best, a human waiter can serve around 100 people in a day. The AI system can serve double that figure, making it good for business.荆州中学2024-2025学年高二上学期9月月考英语试题命题人:审题人:(全卷满分150分考试时间120分钟)第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)听下面5段对话。

Some people have more disposable(可支配的) income to spend on luxuries such as holidays, cars, TVs and smartphones. Recent data has shown that the number of people living in extreme poverty(贫穷) has halved in recent decades. So should we celebrate the fact that more of us now have a better standard of living?Maybe not. Whilst the gap between rich and poor in some countries is narrowing, there is still a lot of inequality in other places-some people have a lot of money and opportunities and others don't. A recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse revealed how divided many of us are when it comes to wealth. A lot of the money in the world is in the hands of very few people. In fact, 48% of global wealth is owned by the richest 1% of the population. But some countries are attempting to reduce this inequality and make the poor, less poor. According to David Bryer from Oxfam, Brazil has been taking "some really sensible measures-measures around having moreprogressive(逐步发展的) tax, around investing in a higher minimum wage and investing in central public services." Having a higher minimum wage, can help people eat better and seek a better education. And more people with more money buy more things-and factories can produce more. In turn, a factory which produces more will need more workers. So, more jobs are created.Other wealthy individuals are doing their bit to help reduce inequality. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, earned a lot of money from his company but when he retired, he and his wife Melinda, created a foundation to help the poor. He thinks that rich people should, of course, pay their taxes but he also advises that they should all "look at taking their wealth and being philanthropic, both in their own country and to help the global poorest."Bill Gates feels that giving money to help poor people is "fulfilling". But if other super-rich people don't want to experience this fulfilment then, according to Oxfam, very soon the wealthiest 1% will soon own more money than the rest of the world's population.【1】According to a recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse, .A.the gap between the rich and the poor is widening graduallyB.increased wealth helps people to reduce the inequalityC.people should be happy about the world’s getting richerD.a small number of people possesses the major wealth【2】What the author’s attitude towards Brazil’s measures?A.Cautious B.ApprovingC.Doubtful D.Critical【3】What is the meaning of the underlines word “philanthropic”?A.Merciful B.ResponsibleC.Realistic D.Broadminded【4】The author develops the article mainly by .A.comparing opinions from different fieldsB.listing detailed numbers and analyzing themC.presenting a trend and analyzing its cause and effectD.presenting research findings and giving some examples3.At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers: while many of them wanted to stay close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of me going away, she was supportive and excited for me.One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards; getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A’s.I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what's important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I have turned out so strong and independent.【1】When the author decided to go to Puerto Rico, his mother .A.wanted to go with him B.worried about his safetyC.didn’t allow him to go D.asked his grandmother for advice【2】The author decided to move away for college to .A.be different from his peers B.keep away from his motherC.be independent in outside world D.make his mother unhappy【3】We can learn from the third paragraph that the author’s mother .A.had a high expectation from him B.was too strict with himC.used to expect nothing from him D.cared little about his learning【4】In the passage, the author mainly wants to tell us .A.his long way to becoming independentB.his good relationship with his motherC.his mother’s deep love for himD.the importance of a mother’s trust and support4.There are countless short videos on YouTube. Then, how can we know what the future will look like?【1】The world has changed a lot in the past 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago, such as food, sleep, the feeling of being appreciated and loved.【2】No. In addition, generally speaking, the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human effort for freedom and communication, to be able to get in control of the time and world. Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years. But why do we need to predict the future? Predicting the future is important for two reasons: first we need to start to think about what kind of future we’d like for ourselves and to pass on the next generation.【3】How about the virtual worlds? It might be possible in the future to experience the sand between your toes, and hear the waves, just lying in your bed at home.【4】So, even if a great invention is there for an affordable price, it'll never take the place of the common experience if it's not real.【5】What we'll see in the next 50 years is the transition from an oil-dependent society to a new society. Here there'll be new medicine, continued exploration of space, challenges in the climate change, and new inventions that make life a little easier.A.So what will the future look like then?B.Will this change in the next 150 years?C.Predicting the future can help us in many ways.D.However, you'll never get the feeling of being there.E. Well, to understand the future, you must know the past.F. However, no matter how real the experience will feel, it doesn't happen for real.G. Then we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will give the best result in the future.三、完形填空One morning all the employees reached the office as usual. So why was I standing in the schoolyard of an unfamiliar school, wearing myself out for a summer teaching job? The extra paychecks were nice, but I lacked the energy of my younger colleagues. Like Stella. She was in her early twenties, and made keeping up with the kids look effortless. She reminded me of myself, back when I was a bright-eyed student teacher at Ramona Elementary…I’d never forget my first day. I was too full of energ y. Nervous energy. My supervising teacher was watching, and I wanted to make a good impression. I asked my third graders to take out their crayons for the day’s lesson. All of them obeyed. Except one. A girl with two long, dark braids(辫子). Everyone called her Estrellita, or “little star.” Why was she unprepared for class? I demanded to know.“My sister has my crayons,” she said.“You should each have your own crayons,” I told her. “That’s no excuse.”“There are 10 children in my family,” Estrellita said quietly, her big brown eyes never leaving my face. “We have to take turns.”I was taken aback. I’d completely misjudged the situation. All day Estrellita’s words played on my mind. The next morning I bought a pack of crayons to leave on Estrellita’s desk. She was so happy! That experience taught me an important lesson. Every student had a unique set of challenges—it was my mission to help my studentsovercome them. That mission used to energize(激励 )me.Rest was almost over. Stella turned to me and we started c hatting. “How long have you been teaching?” she asked. I told her I’d started twenty years before, at Ramona Elementary.“I went to school there twenty years ago!” Stella said. I looked at her again, this time really seeing her. Those big brown eyes. That long, dark hair...“Did you use to have two long braids?” I said. “We called you Estrellita… ”Stella shouted. “ You ! You gave me the crayons!”She’d become a teacher. To help students like I did. Even doing something that small mattered. That summer, I threw myself into teaching with a renewed sense of purpose. Estrellita had taught me a lesson once again.【1】How did the author feel according to Paragraph 1?A.She felt relaxed.B.She felt very tired.C.She was still excited.D.She was proud of herself.【2】Why didn’t Estrellita take out her crayons?A.She had to share them.B.She was being naughty.C.She forgot to bring them.D.She lost them before the class.【3】Which can replace the underlined part “taken aback” in Paragraph 6?A.fairly serious.B.quite pleased.C.very surprised.D.extremely angry.【4】What did the author learn through Stella?A.Never make excuses.B.Why her job mattered.C.How to be a good teacher.D.To be a giver, not a receiver.3.It was Saturday morning. I heard loud noises of moving furniture in the next room. I could almost feel the excitement of John who was soon going to get a room of his own. I remember my own feelings when I was 13. I knew how much he longed for his right to privacy (私人空间) when he was sharing a room with his younger brother, Robot. He said, “Mum, Can I please have a room of my own? I could use Jeff’s. He won’t mind.”It was true that Jeff had graduated from college and flown from the nest. But would he mind? The room was the place where I told him a thousand stories and we had a thousand talks. As close as we were, though, the time came when Jeff needed a door between us. His life was spreading into areas that had less to do with family. I no longer could-or should-know everything about him.It turned out that getting Jeff’s permission was easy. He said, “Of course, Mum, it would be selfish of me to hold on to it.” Then his voice softened, “Mum, I won’t be living at home again---you know that.” Behind his glasse s, his eyes were lit with all the love. There were no doors closed here---they had all opened up again. As John and I were cleaning the room, I fixed my eyes on Jeff’s things around me and could almost touch the little boy who I knew was gone forever. I looked at the room and, in my heart, I let it go. To hold on would be, as Jeff said, selfish. Now it was time for John, shouldering through the door, his eyes bright with promise of independence, to disappear behind the door. It was time for letting go to happen again.【1】How did John feel when he finally got a room of his own?A.Scared.B.Confused.C.Excited.D.Anxious.【2】The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably means “______”.A.Jeff finally flew out of the houseB.Jeff needed his right to privacyC.Jeff would have less to do with his familyD.Jeff got tired of those familiar stories【3】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.John was sharing a room with Jeff.B.John was moving to live with his brother.C.Jeff agreed to let his brother have his room.D.Jeff disliked living with his parents.【4】It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the children did not like to live with adultsB.all her three kids made the author feel depressedC.none of the members in the family thought the same wayD.the author loved and missed the time together with her kids4.The bike-sharing companies that are powering a transportation revolution in China’s urban centers are not like those in the rest of the world. Their bikes have no docking ports or assigned zones for parking. Instead, riders open their smartphone apps, hop on, and start riding. So easy!In 2015, Ofo, China’s bike-share pioneer, launched its first fleet of bicycles in Beijing. The bikes’ bright yellow frames were soon met by the orange-rimmed(镶边), basket-equipped models launched by Mobike, Ofo’s main competitor today. In little over a year, the two companies have had a huge impact on revitalizing (重振) cycling in China, particularly among young people.Ofo placed 1 million bicycles across 35 cities and registered 15 million users in its first years, while Mobike has now gained more than 10 million unique users and bicycles in 21 cities. Inspired by their success, at least 10 other companies have jumped into the market, launching their own app-powered, brightly colored bikes in quick succession. But Mobike and Ofo are far ahead of them. The two industry leaders each take a different marketing method to a similar product. The Mobike app uses GPS to display bikes’ locations to users. They can use the map to reserve a bike and walk over to it. A scan of the bike’s QR code (二维码) unlocks the bike, and when users manually(手动地) lock the bike at the end of their trip, the app records the trip’s end and the bike will pop back up on the map as available. Equipped with this wireless technology, Mobikes cost between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan. Rides cost 1 yuan for an hour or a half hour, depending on whether a user chooses a “Lite” or regular bike, and the deposit (押金) required to the service is 299 yuan.Ofo, meanwhile, is devoted not just to producing its own bikes, which have slim yellow bodies and cost about 250 yuan, but also to connecting existing bikes to its network----- a philosophy that begins with the practice of 2000 bikes offered to a campus bike-share program. The 2000 bikes were the first generation of Ofo. Yet the maj ority of the company’s bikes are currently ones that have been specially manufactured and fitted with their lock system. Unlike Mobike,Ofo bikes themselves are offline: their locations are tracked through users’ cell phones. Users find a free bike, enter the license plate number into their app, and receive the bike unlock code. When they have reached their destination, they end the ride on the app and manually lock the bike. Rides cost 1 yuan for an hour and the deposit is 99 yuan.【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The bike rides based on apps are available whenever you need.B.The bike body in bright color only attracts young people to choose cycling.C.Ofo knows their bikes’ location by scanning the bike’s QR code.D.The bikes are locked automatically when the users reached their destination.【2】Which of the following is close to the meaning of the underlined word “succession ”in the 3rd paragraph? A.successful experience.B.movement to action.C.continuous process .D.production line.【3】How are Ofo bikes different from Mobikes?① no need for online condition.② without their own lock system.③ not only to produce ofo bikes but also put existing ones to use.④ to unlock the bike through app.⑤ to lock the bike by QR codeA.①②⑤B.②③④C.②④⑤D.①③④【4】What is the best title of the passage?A.Bike-sharing business models: Mobike and Ofo.B.A real transportation innovation(创新): app-powered bicycles.C.The successful secret of two bike-sharing companies.D.Cool experience of app-powered bicycles.二、其他I think the majority of people would agree that it’s unhealthy to live in the past. After all, we’re all familiar with the new age philosophy, “Yeste rday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.【1】. Living in the past holds us back from being able to enjoy the present moment. But are there any benefits of revisiting a previous time? Actually, yes. The past has several advantages:Learning from our mistakes: We all know that poor choices can be some of life’s greatest teachers.【2】.【3】: By revisiting an unfavorable event from our past, we can often view it from a different perspective as time has passed. Being older and wiser, we are now able to reevaluate the experience and gain deeper insights and understandings of what happened and why, and how it has impacted us since. What once scarred us can now be healed through a newly-found awareness and no longer be a negative force in our lives.Motivated by earlier successes:【4】. Other times life has been difficult. Remembering the past when we were at our best can help motivate us out of our current slump(低谷) and put us back on track for success. After you shut off the game, you still see those Tetris blocks falling in your mind. You're grocery shopping and find yourself thinking about rearranging items on grocery shelves. Your mind continues to play the game, even when you're physically not.Robert Stickgold, a Harvard professor, noticed something similar after a day hiking a mountain. That night, he dreamt he was still going through the motions of mountain hiking. Curious about this, he tried something: he got a group of college students of various skill levels to play Tetris and let them sleep in the Harvard sleep lab.Over 60% of the students, including those who suffered from amnesia (健忘症), reported dreams of images of Tetris pieces falling, rotating (旋转), and fitting together. Interestingly, half the Tetris expert students reported such Tetris dreams, while 75% of the beginners did.A study found that playing Tetris can grow your brain and make it more efficient. Adolescent girls played the game for an average of 1.5 hours a week over three months. The cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) of the girls grew thicker, while brain activity in other areas decreased. Richard Haier, who had found that there was a "Tetris learning effect", in which the brain consumed less energy as mastery of the game rose, concluded, "The brain is learning which areas not to use."Haier's study showed that as the girls practiced playing the game, nerve cells made connections, communicating through synapses (a synapse is a connection between two nerve cells). When you learn something, you change those connections. Every time you reactivate(激活) a circuit, synaptic efficiency increases, and connections become more durable and easier to reactivate. Stickgold says sleep plays a role in this memory process. So to sum up, whenever you do specific tasks over and over again, they take up less of your brain power over time. And that’s pretty amazing.【1】What does the underlined part ‘surreal ability’ in the first paragraph mean?A.The game can help people arrange things in life.B.The game can be applied to many aspects of life.C.There are great similarities between the game and things in life.D.The mind continues to play the game when we are doing other things.【2】What can we learn from Stickgold’s study?A.More than half of the students dreamed of images of Tetris.B.Students having bad memories didn’t dream of the game.C.The Tetris expert students were more likely to dream of the game than the beginners.D.More than half of the Tetris expert students didn’t dream of the game.【3】Playing Tetris for a long time can help ________.①grow one’s brain②one’s brain functio n efficiently③arrange things tidily in life④improve the adaptability of one’s brainA.①②③B.①②④C.②③④D.①③④【4】The purpose of the passage is to ________.A.encourage people to play TetrisB.warn people to focus while doing thingsC.warn people not to play games before sleepD.tell people they will improve at something if they keep doing it3.This past Christmas season, I went to visit my parents. I asked mother and father if I could take the letters back to my home. They agreed. As I opened each letter, all of them beautiful with age, I discovered a new page in this private part of my parents' lives. My father served in the army. His letters were full of frontline (前线) descriptions, and they continued all the way through the battle. Each of my mother's letters was sealed (密封) with her lipstick kiss. Father wrote that he sealed his return letters by rekissing her lipstick kiss. How they had been missing each other! I finished reading six months of the letters and discovered there were at least eleven months missing. Maybe they were lost forever. Not long after our Christmas visit, Father became very ill and was in hospital. I went to the hospital to see him. As I sat by his bedside, he told me how much receiving those lipstick-kissed letters had meant to him when he had been so far from home.Later that evening, Mother and I revisited the attic in search of the lost letters. Finally we dug them out of Mother’s old college trunk (皮箱). The next day was Valentine’s Day, and we went to the hospital. At my father's bedside, I showed him an old envelope. His curiosity was aroused. When he carefully opened the letter, he recognized it and his eyes were filled with tears. Because of this increase, several U.S. universities have started offering degrees in unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS.One of these universities is the University of Washington in Seattl e. Ward Handley is seeking a master’s degree in UAS at the university. When the drone program first began, he did not think it was a good idea. “Drones canbe used to invade privacy(侵犯隐私).” He said. But later, Handley changed his opinion. He said, “I think there are good enough purposes for them.”The FAA (the part of the U.S. government that controls air travel and traffic) is creating new rules to control the use of drones, however. A new law requires drone owners to register(登记) their drones. People who do not register their drones could face fines of up to US$20,000.The new rules may also present problems for students. One problem is finding a legal place to fly.Students at Blue Mountain Community College fly inside the college gym. In Seattle, University of Washington students test their drones in a big room.Christopher Lum, a scientist at the University of Washington, helps students explore how drones can safely share the sky with regular aircraft. Lum explained why they test drones inside a building, “We need to registerour aircraft and get permission to fly outside. That process can take months.”At this time, Kansas State University is the only school with permission to offer unmanned aircraft flight classesto students outside. The FAA selected Kansas State University and 15 other universities to be part of a national research group.Lum and some of his students recently moved their research to Australia. Even with a new coat of paint and the high wire fence, the school I knew ten years ago remains the same.Every day at 5 p.m., instead of flying kites with our friends, my brother and I had to go to Vietnamese school. No amount of kicking, screaming, or arguing could stop my mother, who was determined to have us learn the language of our culture. She held us by the collar and walked with us the seven long, hilly blocks from our home to school, leaving our tearful faces before the front of the school. We all sat in little chairs in a big empty room, which had a slight smell of old clothes that had been stored for a long time. I hated that smell. There was a stage far to the right, with an American flag on one side and the flag of the Republic of Vietnam on the other side.Although the school mainly taught language ---- speaking, reading, dictation ---- the lessons always began with an exercise in politeness. With the entrance of the teacher, the best student would tap a bell and everyone would get up, and say in Vietnamese, "How are you, teacher?"The language always made me embarrassed. More often than not, I had tried to separate myself from the loud voice that followed me whenever I went to the American supermarket outside our area. The voice belonged to my grandmother, a small old woman who could shout louder than anyone on the street. Her Vietnamese was quick, it was loud, and it was not beautiful. In our area, the comings and goings of hundreds of Vietnamese on their daily tasks sounded crazy. I did not want to be thought of as being mad, as talking stupid. When I spoke English, people nodded at me, smiled and encouraged me. Even Vietnamese people would laugh and say that I’d do wel l in life.My brother was even stricter than I about speaking English. He was especially cruel towards my mother, scolding her for her poor English. Bits of Vietnamese were often mixed in her conversation. After two years of struggle, I finally divorced my culture. I was permitted to stop Vietnamese school. I thought of myself as American. At last, I thought I was one of you; I wasn’t one of them.Sadly, I am only an American.【1】What can be learned from the passage?A.The author’s brother liked learning Vietnamese.B.The author’s mother taught him English at home.C.The author’s mother put her sons in a language school in Vietnam.D.The author didn’t like learning Vietnamese when he was young.【2】The author often felt embarrassed because ________.A.his Vietnamese was not beautiful enoughB.his grandma spoke Vietnamese loudly in publicC.he could not fly kites like other kids at schoolD.his mother always treated him rudely in the market【3】It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author feels ________.A.regretful B.peaceful C.satisfied D.frightened【4】What’s the theme of the passage?A.It is important to adapt to a new environment.B.It is important to remember your childhood.C.It is important to appreciate your own culture.D.It is important to learn a foreign language.2.As is shown in a recent study, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type personality they have. Robert Phipps, a body language expert, has identified four sleeping positions that affectpersonality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal(胎儿的) position. He found that this is by far the most common bedtime position, sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log, indicating stubbornness. People sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer(更僵硬) than when they went to sleep.” The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is a nd you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.Yearner(向往型的) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style----on their backs with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting great results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.Perhaps the most special sleep style is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, it also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sle eping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”【1】Which of the following pictures is the fetal position?A.B.C.D.【2】The underlined word “rigid” the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.A.comfortable B.flexible C.stubborn D.strange【3】Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection?A.The fetal position B.The log positionC.The yearner position D.The freefaller position【4】What is the passage mainly about?A.Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably?B.A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day.C.How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day.D.Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night.3.OK, I admit it: emoticons(表情符号)are popular. Some people even think they are fun. Many seem unable to get through an e-mail or Instant Message chat sentence without using one. Some feel that they add feeling and character to otherwise cold digital communications. Some people, such as a Hollywood scriptwriter John Blumenthal, however, blast the use of emoticons as “infantile(幼稚)just like the people who use them”. He believes that words themselves should be enough. “If you’re funny, happy or sad, that should be apparent from the comment that goes before the emoticons,” he argues. In the eyes of Blumenthal, the use of emoticons is a gender issue. “Men don’t use emoticons very much. Maybe not at all,” he said, “Teenage girls and women seem to use them a lot. Maybe there’s an emoticon gene.”It’s an interesting opinion, but it is not shared by all.In an interview with The New York Times, Dacher Keltner, professor of psychology at the University of California, said that emoticons are popular because our brains are programmed “to seek out representations of humanity”. He believes that they are popular not because they are shortcuts for the lazy, but because they bring in something beyond language. They satisfy our needs to be with and communicate with people. All of these arguments may be somehow right. Each one of us will choose to communicate in our own way. I tried to use one once and felt like I was stealing into a primary school class that I had no place being in. I’d rather let my words do the talking.Friends, however, send me messages and e-mails full of emoticons. I have no problem with this. I don’t regard any of my friends as lazy or immature. It’s just a question of individuality.【1】What does the underlined word “blast” in the second paragraph mean?A.clarify B.criticize C.support D.approve【2】Which of the following views would John Blumenthal agree with?A.It’s enough to use language in digital communication.B.Instant Message chatters are childish.C.Men never use emoticons.D.There must be an emoticon gene in everybody.【3】From the text, we can conclude that the author______________.A.feels he has no difficulty using emoticonsB.thinks emoticons don’t suit himC.encourages his friends to use emoticonsD.believes that emoticons are suitable for everyone【4】What is the main point of the article?A.Advice on language used over the Internet.B.Arguments over the use of emoticons.C.The history of the use of emoticons.D.Reasons for the popularity of emoticons.4.Many of us enjoy doing it: you turn on the camera on your mobile phone and hold it at a high angle, making your eyes look bigger and your cheek-bones more defined. You turn to your best side and click. There it is —your selfie.Over the past year, “selfie” has become a well-known term across the globe. This August the Oxford diction-ary added the word to their online dictionary and defined it as: “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and up-loaded to a social m edia website.”Today it’s not difficult to find social networking pages full of photos people have taken of themselves and their friends. And selfie culture has become especially relevant for young people. As many as 91 percent of teenagers have posted photos of themselves online, according to a recent survey by the US Pew Research Center. So what are the reasons for the rise of selfie culture?“The cult (狂热) of the selfie celebrates regular people,” Pamela Rutledge, a professor at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, told Vogue magazine. “There are many more photographs available now of real people than models.”Posting selfies also allows you to control your image online. “I like having the power to choose how I look, even if I’m making a funny face,” Samantha Barks, 19, a high school student in the US, told Vogue. In addition to self-expression and documentation, selfies “allow of a close friendship for long-distance friends, because you can see each other’s faces every day”, wrote Casey Miller at The Huffmgton Post. But US psychologist Jill Weber is concerned that selfies might lead to social problems, “There’s a danger that your self-esteem may start to be tied to the comments and ‘likes’ you get when you post a selfie, and they aren’t based on who you are —they’re based on what you look like,” Weber told Vogue. “When you get nothing or a negative response, your confidence can plummet.”【1】With the first paragraph, the author intends to .A.tell us the fun of taking a selfieB.describe what a selfie isC.introduce where the selfie came fromD.inform readers that the selfie is popular among teenagers【2】Why is selfie culture so popular according to the article?a. It enables people to choose how they look.b. It helps people improve their self-esteem.c. It’s a chance for ordinary people to show off themselves.d. It is believed to be a helpful way to develop a new friendship.e. It is considered a good way to stay connected with friends that are far away.A.a, c, e B.b, c, d C.a, b, c D.b, d, e【3】What is Jill Weber’s attitude toward selfies?A.She thinks they are a good form of self-expression and documentation.B.She believes the disadvantages of selfies outweigh the advantages.C.She is worried that people’s self-esteem might be affected by how others react to their selfies.D.She thinks that selfies can help people learn about their friends based on who they really are.【4】The underlined word “plummet” in the last paragraph probably means .A.rapidly develop B.greatly exaggerateC.become dangerous D.quickly fall5.You have two eyes and they are set close together on the front of your face. Have you wondered why? The reasons are simple and important to the way you see the rest of your world.Your eyes are like two small cameras. A camera catches an image of an object and records it on film. Similarly, when you look at something, each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball. Because your eyes are set close together, they view the world from about the same height but from slightly different angles. Working as a team, the eyes send the images to your brain, which puts them together into a single, centered image.Seeing in stereo means seeing with two eyes working together, which is called stereoscopic sight. This allows you to view the world in three dimensions, or 3-D. Seeing depth helps you to judge the distance between youand the objects you see and to adjust to the changing angle at which you see something as you move closer toor farther away from it. If images are coming from only one eye, however, only two of these dimensions----height and width----can be perceived. A world seen with one eye is thus two-dimensional, as in a photograph. Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face. Think of other animals with the same arrangement. They are all animals that hunt, like lions and wolves. Their eyes face directly in front of them. This provides a field of sight about 180 degrees wide, which is called binocular(双眼的) sight. On the other hand, animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head, which provides nearly360-degree field of sight. In order to stay alive, they need to see things coming from the sides and from behind. However, without stereoscopic sight, they have difficulty determining how far a danger is.With sight both stereoscopic and binocular, humans share with animal hunters the ability to see from side to side and to accurately determine the distance. If you think it would be great to have another type of sight, perhapswith hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do, think again! Each tiny insect eye sees only a tiny part. Besides, what if you needed glasses? Be glad for the eyesight that you have.【1】According to the passage, the similarity of an eye and a camera is that they both .A.can imagine objects B.can record imagesC.provide centered images D.work at the same height【2】Stereoscopic sight is a result of having .A.two eyes close to each other that work togetherB.hundreds of eyes, all seeing tiny parts of an imageC.a three-hundred-sixty-degree field of sightD.one eye on either side of the head, each seeing a different image【3】What is the meaning of the underlined word “perceived” in Para3 most similar to?A.known B.seen C.taken D.understood【4】We can infer from the last paragraph that .A.our eyes work like camerasB.animal hunters are glad for the sight they haveC.the three dimensions are depth, height and widthD.human beings are fortunate to have such eyesight四、其他阅读下列各小题,根据汉语提示,用句末括号内的英语单词完成句子,并将答案写在答题卡上的相应题号后。

strike this month in protest against the unacceptable amount of after-school tasks their children are given. The homework load of Spanish children has long been a sore point with some parents, who argue that the burden is too great, places too much pressure on pupils and eats into family time.According to a study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD),Spanish 15-year-olds have 6.5 hours of homework a Week compared with an average of 4.9 across the 38 OECD countries. The Spanish Confederation of Associations of Mothers and Fathers of Students (Ceapa) is calling on parents whose children attend Spanish state schools to boycott weekend homework in November."We've lost a bit of common sense in this country when it comes to talking about education and we've got a system in which boys' and girls' free time has disappeared",said Jos Luis Pazos, president of Ceapa."Schools are passing on tasks to families that they shouldn't be.It starts with children from the ages of three to six doing half an hour's homework every day.For us,that's an unacceptable situation".Pazos said Ceapa disagreed with the belief that children should endure huge amounts of homework in the hope that it would ensure them a better future. They should be.happy when they're little and that life isn't just about someone telling you that you have to suffer inexplicably(难以理解地).The model needs to change because society has changed.Schoolchildren have to fit their homework around the school day, which varies from region to region and school to school, but starts early from around 8 am or 9 am and finishes anywhere between 2 pm and 5pm.However,schools are increasingly using an 8 am-2 pm timetable to save money and in the face of evidence that suggests the longer hours do not yield better results.A spokesman for the education department of Madrid said homework was a matter for individual schools rather than regional governments. They're the ones who know best what the need is in each case.【1】Why are parents in Spain being called on to go on a strike?A.To stop school violence.B.To ask for longer school time.C.To say no to heavy homework load.D.To request equal education for their kids.【2】Which of the following would Ceapa agree to?A.Longer school hours will ensure better grades.B.Happiness is the most important thing for a child.C.Huge amounts of homework means a better future.D.The 8 am-2 pm timetable is suitable for most children.【3】Which of the following should be responsible for students' homework according to the spokesman?A. Ceapa.B. The OECD.C. Regional governments.D. Each individual school.4.Growing up in Wyoming, everyday life was an adventure—I spent my time camping, and exploring mountains. When I was little,my mom became the state's first female U.S. Marshall.I'll never forget how the local newspaper praised her for her success in a field that's traditionally run by men.Under her influence,I made up my mind to achieve something great. Now,I've become famous for sailing,a sport often considered "a man's world".Sailing is considered a hard-to-break-into sport. And,generally, there are only two ways to get into it—either through a strict sailing education that leads to experience or by growing up on the water and racing in the Olympics. Most of my teammates became professional sailors in one of these two ways but I skipped both.In the summer of 2008,I went to St.Croix through a college internship(实习)program focusing on educating locals about HIV and AIDs.There,I discovered my love for sailing. Then,SCA,a global hygiene(卫生保健)company, made the decision to support an all-female team, and when they began accepting applications,I knew it was the chance of a lifetime.I made it my task to become a part of the team.Even when it seemed like there were no positions left,I never gave up.After a stressful,two-year application process,I finally got the call.I moved to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and began training with the team immediately. The process was physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting, but I finally achieved my goal.I sailed in the "Everest of sailing" with only six years' ter, there was an all-female team competing, and I was lucky enough to be a part of it.As women,we need to approach our dreams as if we deserve to achieve them as much as men, because we do. There are plenty of professions, including sailing,in which women are absent or have a minor presence—butthat's not because they shouldn't be there. We need to push the boundaries and focus on obtaining our goals and passions,no matter how unobtainable and challenging they may seem.【1】Why does the author mention her mother in Paragraph 1?A.To compare with her mother.B.To describe women's struggles.C.To analyze her mother's success.D.To show her mother's influence on her.【2】what does the underlined word "both" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?A.Two traditional ways to become professional sailors.B.Two important persons in the author's life.C.Two basic stages of being a sailor.D.Two famous professional sailors.【3】What is the correct order of the following events?a.I began training with the sailing team.b.I attended a college internship program.c.I took part in competing in an all-female team.d.I discovered my love for sailing as a woman.A.b-d-a-c B.d-a-c-bC.a-c-d-b D.a-d-c-b【4】Which can best describe the author?A.Humorous.B.Generous.C.Pessimistic.D.Determined.二、其他How to cultivate a creative hobby in collegeYour undergraduate days are arguably some of the most stressful of your life. The best way to get it all out is to express yourself creatively. Here is how to get started:【1】The first step is finding room in your schedule to actually sit down and let your creative juices flow.【2】 However, one of the best things you can do for yourself is take time to relax and let your mind wander as it pleases. If you want to actually make your art a part of your career though, you will have to devote a serious chunk of your day to it.Take a course.【3】Schedule an appointment with your advisor and see if the college you attend offers a course in the creative field that you're interested in.Join a club or make one.Chances are that there are other students at your school that share the same interests as you.【4】If there isn't one, check out the procedures for going about making one!Constantly search for inspiration.【5】This could mean something as simple as looking for blogs that showcase work that you admire or going to a museum in your college town and wandering around for a bit.Even if you don't feel that you have enough talent to make your art a part of your professional career,it never hurts to try.The skills that you learn while working at your art might even possibly help you in the workplace down the road.A.Learn how to make a club.B.Everyone is busy in college.C.Make time in your schedule.D.You should try to make you a well-rounded and interesting person.E.Visit your university's websites and see what clubs exist that relate to the art you practice.F.The easiest way to make time to express yourself is to fit it into your academic schedule.G.You should always be looking for the next thing that will inspire your work even further.三、完形填空On some special occasions in your life, you may find yourself faced with various choices. You've probably been asked what you would do if you found a leather____full of cash.Would you keep it,turn it in to the police or ask for a ____?Woralop,a tramp from Thailand, only had 9 baht(铢)to his name when he found it with 20,000 baht and several credit____in it.It was more than____to buy him food and even a place to stay for weeks.____,he didn't think about keeping it.
