You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it’s likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement,so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break valu es up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values are the character traits(特征)of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some “being” values are kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering “being” these character traits becomes your life purpose.
Your “having” values are the feelings you need to crea te in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, “being” valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life.
When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的) ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思), or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强)your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.
59. The underlined word “void” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. a feeling of emptiness
B. a loss of power

60. According to the text, by acting on your own “being” values, you will _________.
A. gain a lot of power
B. fill your own needs
C. seek all human virtues
D. form positive personality
61. What can be inferred from the text?
A. “Having” values are better than “being” values.
B. The way other people think of you decides who you are.
C. A calm person does not choose to complain easily.
D. A responsible person does not care about financial security.
62. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. persuade the readers to make a commitment
B. inform the readers how to be truly happy
C. explain to the readers what personal values are
D. instruct the readers how to make wise choices
(C)
“Tear them apart!” “ill the fool!”“Murder the referee!”
These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let's not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real violence. Books have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain meanings may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual behavior. I see the term “opponent” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.
The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent” is “enemy”,or “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. I remember an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player's request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player went away to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then screamed, “Are they wet enough now?”
In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the effect that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent's intentional and illegal blocking by hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which differs from normal behavior.
Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升)the game to the level where it belongs, setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be a good way to start.
The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “friend” or “companion.” You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent”.
63. What did the handball player do when he was not allowed to change his gloves?
A. He refused to continue the game.
B. He angrily hit the referee with a ball.
C. He insisted that the referee was unfair.
D. He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.
64. According to the passage, players in a game may ______.
A. throw the ball at the opponent illegally blocking their way
B. keep on screaming and shouting throughout the game
C. 1ie down on the ground as an act of protection
D. kick the ball across the court with force
65. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The player's eagerness to win.
B. The player's bad behavior.
C. The player's attitudes towards the game.
D. The player's totally different behavior on and off the court.
66. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Players should be educated to respect referees on the court.
B. Replacing the present terms on the court can help reduce violence.
C. Raising the referee's sense of responsibility can help reduce violence.
D. Changing the attitude of players on the sports field can help reduce violence.
(D)
Ben walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do?
Suddenly he heard a bird’s wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly toward the sound.
He saw a colored head… the head of a beautiful bird. The bird did not move until Ben came close. Then it tried to fly away, but one wing was broken.
Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. The bird fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben’s arms.
Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wing so that it could fly again.
He was almost out of the woods when he heard the hunter behind him.
“You just found that bird?” the hunter asked.
“Yes,” Ben answered.
“It is mine!”
Ben was afraid and tried to answer, but his mouth was too dry to speak. Nevertheless, he wetted his lips and said, “No.”
“I shot him and I say he is mine!”
“But he is not dead yet,” Ben answered, “and besides, anything on my land belongs to me.”
The hunter looked down at the little man and smiled. “Say, who are you?”
Ben’s voice shook with both fear and anger. “I own this land. There are signs everywhere that say, ‘No hun ting’.”
“No need to get angry, mister,” the hunter said, “Control yourself.”
There was something threatening in the man’s cool quiet voice. And he had a gun. His arms were free and
Ben’s were not.
The hunter stepped closer and said, “Give me that bird!”
Be n was white with anger, “No!” he answered. His eye glasses became wet and he had to look over the top of them to see the other man.
“Give me the bird and I will go away,” the hunter said.
“You get off my land,” Ben told him. “Get off right now… you do not belong here!”
The man’s face got red. “Mister,” he said, “I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here.”
“That is a thing of the past.” Ben said. “I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place now and I’m telling you to leave. You go back through the woods and get off my land!”
“Now look, mister,” the hunter said, “be reasonable.”
The hunter raised his gun.
A cold wind blew across Ben’s face. He looked into the hunter’s gray eyes. Ben was frightened. It was not too late, he thought. He could still give the bird to the hunter and return safely home… that would end this whole ugly business.
The bird struggled weakly and made a wild, strange noise.
Then Ben knew he could never give this bird to the hunter. This feeling gave Ben great strength, and he was no longer afraid.
“I will never let you kill this bird,” he said. “Get away from here. If you try to take this bird, I will fight… you have a gun and you are bigger, but that does not worry me. You will never get this bird… you will have to kill me first.”
The two men looked at each other. Ben’s fear returned. His knees began to shake and felt sick. Yet he stood straight, wondering what would happen next.
They stood close to each other for a long time. The woods are strangely quiet. Then t he hunter’s rough voice broke the silence.
“You are a fool.” And then to Ben’s surprise, he slowly walked away.
Ben watched until he was gone. His arms hurt, his body felt wet and cold.
67. Why did the hunter smile when saying “Say, who are you” in the passage?
A. He was amused at Ben’s reply and interested in him.
B. He wanted to confirm Ben’s identity in a friendly way.
C. He looked down on Ben and thought his reply ridiculous.
D. He meant to be friendly enough to get the bird from Ben.
68. What strengthe ned Ben’s determination never to give the bird to the hunter?
A. His strong dislike of the hunter.
B. His firm confidence in himself.
C. His ownership of this piece of land.
D. His concern and sympathy for the bird.
69. The hunter thought Ben a fool in the end because _______.
A. Ben tried to protect a bird at all costs
B. Ben insisted he should leave the land

Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good job quite easily. Companies toured the universities, competing with each other to persuade graduates to join them. However, those days are gone, even in Hong ong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.
Most job organizations have provided three stages for graduates to follow in the process of finding a suitable job recognizing abilities, matching these to available chances and presenting them well to future employers.
Job seekers have to make a careful judgment of their abilities. One area of judgment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, confidence, leadership and caring for others. An honest judgment of personal interests and abilities such as creative or scientific skills, or skills developed from work experience, should also be given careful thought.
The second stage is to study the chances available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study available job chances and information in newspapers or they can visit a job office, write to possible employers for information or get in touch with friends or relatives who may already be holding a particular profession. After studying all the various choices, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various jobs.
A good personal presentation is necessary in the search for a good job. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling mistakes. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in detail, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employer’s needs, explain why they are interested in a job with the particular company and try to show that they already know something about the company and its activities.
When graduates are asked to attend an interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the would-be employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.
There will always be good job chances for people with ability, skills and determination. The secret to achieving a good job is to be one of them.

The elephant and the fly
An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away once more.
This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can’t you stay for a while in one place? ”
The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constant ly in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?”
The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get involved in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew it better. I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around. So when you are in charge of your five senses and attention, your mind will become calm too.”
