IIe’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 64. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________ A. . provide some key facts about Confucius B. attract the readers’ interest in the subject C. show great respect for the ancient thinker D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations 65. The passage is likely to appear in ___________. A. a biography B. a history paper C. a newspaper D. a philosophy textbook D Inside the pleasingly fragrant cafe, So All May Eat(SAME) in downtown Denver ,the spirit of generosity(慷慨)is instantly noticeable :A donation box stands in place of a cash register. With his wife Libby. Previously volunteering at soup kitchens, the Birkys were dissatisfied with the often unhealthy meals they served there. “We wanted to offer quality food in a restaurant where everyone felt comfortable ,regardless of their circumstances,” Birky says. SAME’s special lunch menu changes daily and most food materials are natural and grown by local farmers. The café now averages 65 to 70 customers (and eight volunteers) a day. And the spirit of generosity behind the project appears to be spreading. In early2007,one volunteer who had cleared snow for his meals during the long winter said goodbye to the Birkys,”He said he was going to New Orleans to help with the hurricane clear up,” says Birky. 68.What can we learn about the soup kitchens the Birkys previously worked for? Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.(40 points)Text 1Homework has never been terribly popular with students and even many parents, but in recent years it has been particularly scorned. School districts across the country, most r ecently Los Angeles Unified, are revising their thinking on his educational ritual. Unfortun ately, L.A. Unified has produced an inflexible policy which mandates that with the excepti on of some advanced courses, homework may no longer count for more than 10% of a st udent‘s academic grade. This rule is meant to address the difficulty that students from impoverished or chaotic homes might have in completing their homework. But the policy is unclear and contradic tory. Certainly, no homework should be assigned that students cannot do without expensiv e equipment. But if the district is essentially giving a pass to students who do not do the ir homework because of complicated family lives, it is going riskily close to the implicati on that standards need to be lowered for poor children.District administrators say that homework will still be a pat of schooling: teachers are allowed to assign as much of it as they want. But with homework counting for no more than 10% of their grades, students can easily skip half their homework and see vey little difference on their report cards. Some students might do well on state tests without com pleting their homework, but what about the students who performed well on the tests and did their homework? It is quite possible that the homework helped. Yet rather than empo wering teachers to find what works best for their students, the policy imposes a flat, acro ss-the-board rule.At the same time, the policy addresses none of the truly thorny questions about hom ework. If the district finds homework to be unimportan t to its students‘ academic achieve ment, it should move to reduce or eliminate the assignments, not make them count for al most nothing. Conversely, if homework does nothing to ensure that the homework students are not assigning more than they are willing to review and correct. The homework rules should be put on hold while the school board, which is responsi ble for setting educational policy, looks into the matter and conducts public hearings. It is not too late for L.A. Unified to do homework right.21.It is implied in paragraph 1 that nowadays homework_____.[A] is receiving more criticism[B]is no longer an educational ritual[C]is not required for advanced courses[D]is gaining more preferences22.L.A.Unified has made the rule about homework mainly because poor students____ _.[A]tend to have moderate expectations for their education[B]have asked for a different educational standard[C]may have problems finishing their homework[D]have voiced their complaints about homework23.According to Paragraph 3,one problem with the policy is that it may____.[A]discourage students from doing homework[B]result in students' indifference to their report cards[C]undermine the authority of state tests[D]restrict teachers' power in education24. As mentioned in Paragraph 4, a key question unanswered about homework is whe ther______. [A] it should be eliminated[B]it counts much in schooling[C]it places extra burdens on teachers[D]it is important for grades25.A suitable title for this text could be______.[A]Wrong Interpretation of an Educational Policy[B]A Welcomed Policy for Poor Students[C]Thorny Questions about Homework[D]A Faulty Approach to HomeworkText2Pretty in pink: adult women do not rememer being so obsessed with the colour, yet i t is pervasive in our young girls‘ lives. Tt is not that pink is intrinsically bad, but it is s uch a tiny slice of the rainbow and, though it may celebrate girlhood in one way, it also repeatedly and firmly fuses girls‘ identity to appearance. Then it presents that connection, even among two-year-olds, between girls as not only innocent but as evidence of innocen ce. Looking around, I despaired at the singular lack of imagination about girls‘ lives and interests.Girls‘ attraction to pink may seem unavoidable, somehow encoded in their DNA, but according to Jo Paoletti, an associate professor of American Studies, it is not. Children w ere not colour-coded at all until the early 20th century: in the era before domestic washin g machines all babies wore white as a practical matter, since the only way of getting clothes clean was to boil them. What‘s more, both boys and girls wore what were thought of as gender-neutral dresses. When nursery colours were introduced, pink was actually consid ered the more masculine colour, a pastel version of red, which was associated with strengt h. Blue, with its intimations of the Virgin Mary, constancy and faithfulness, symbolised fe mininity. It was not until the mid-1980s, when amplifying age and sex differences became a dominant children‘s marketing strategy, that pink fully came into its own, when it bega n to seem inherently attractive to girls, part of what defined them as female, at least for t he first few critical years.I had not realised how profoundly marketing trends dictated our perception of what is natural to kins, including our core beliefs about their psychological development. Take th e toddler. I assumed that phase was something experts developed after years of research i n to children‘s behaviour: wrong. Turns out, acdording to Daniel Cook, a historian of child hood consumerism, it was popularised as a marketing trick by clothing manufacrurers in t he 1930s.Trade publications counselled department stores that, in order to increase sales, they s hould create a ―third stepping stone‖ between infant wear and older kids‘ clothes. Tt was only after ―toddler‖became a common shoppers‘ term that it evolved into a br oadly accept ed developmental stage. Splitting kids, or adults, into ever-tinier categories has proved a sur e-fire way to boost profits. And one of the easiest ways to segment a market is to magni fy gender differences –or invent them where they did not previously exist.26.By saying "it is...the rainbow"(Line 3, Para.1),the author means pink______.[A]should not be the sole representation of girlhood[B]should not be associated with girls' innocence[C]cannot explain girls' lack of imagination[D]cannot influence girls' lives and interests27.According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is true of colours?[A]Colours are encoded in girls' DNA.[B]Blue used to be regarded as the colour for girls.[C]Pink used to be a neutral colour in symbolising genders.[D]White is prefered by babies.28.The author suggests that our perception of children's psychological development wa s much influenced by_____.[A]the marketing of products for children[B]the observation of children's nature[C]researches into children's behavior[D]studies of childhood consumption29.We may learn from Paragraph 4 that department stores were advised to_____.[A]focus on infant wear and older kids' clothes[B]attach equal importance to different genders[C]classify consumers into smaller groups[D]create some common shoppers' terms30.It can be concluded that girls' attraction to pink seems to be____.[A] clearly explained by their inborn tendency[B]fully understood by clothing manufacturers[C] mainly imposed by profit-driven businessmen[D]well interpreted by psychological expertsText3In2010.afederaljudgeshookAmerica'panieshadwonpatentsforis olatedDNAfordecades-by2005some20%ofhumangeneswereparented.ButinMarch2010ajudgeruledt hatgeneswereunpatentable.Executiveswereviolentlyagitated.TheBiotechnologyIndustryOrganisatio n(BIO),atradegroup,assuredmembersthatthiswasjusta―preliminarystep‖inalongerbattle.OnJuly29ththeywererelieved,atleasttemporarily.Afederalappealscourtoverturnedthepriordecis ion, rulingthatMyriadGeneticscouldindeedholbpatentstotwogenssthathelpforecastawoman'sriskofbr eastcancer.ThechiefexecutiveofMyriad, acompanyinUtah, saidtherulingwasablessingtofirmsandpati entsalike.Butascompaniescontinuetheirattemptsatpersonalisedmedicine,thecourtswillremainratherbusy. Before it ends,it will likely change the life course and character of a generation of young adults. A nd ultimately, it is likely to reshape our politics, our culture, and the character of our soci ety for years. No one tries harder than the jobless to find silver linings in this national economic d isaster. Many said that unemployment, while extremely painful, had improved them in som e ways; they had become less materialistic and more financially prudent; they were more aware of the struggles of others. In limited respects, perhaps the recession will leave socie ty better off. At the very least, it has awoken us from our national fever dream of easy r iches and bigger houses, and put a necessary end to an era of reckless personal spending. But for the most part, these benefits seem thin, uncertain, and far off. In The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, the economic historian Benjamin Friedman argues that both inside and outside the U.S. ,lengthy periods of economic stagnation or decline have almost always left society more mean-spirited and less inclusive, and have usually stoppe d or reversed the advance of rights and freedoms. Anti-immigrant sentiment typically incre ases, as does conflict between races and classes.Income inequality usually falls during a recession, but it has not shrunk in this one,. Indeed, this period of economic weakness may reinforce class divides, and decrease opport unities to cross them--- especially for young people. The research of Till Von Wachter, th e economist in Columbia University, suggests that not all people graduating into a recessi on see their life chances dimmed: those with degrees from elite universities catch up fairl y quickly to where they otherwise would have been if they had graduated in better times; it is the masses beneath them that are left behind. In the internet age, it is particularly easy to see the resentment that has always been hidden winthin American society. More difficult, in the moment , is discerning precisely h ow these lean tim es are affecting society‘s character. In many respects, the U.S. was more socially tolerant entering this resession than at any time in its history, and a variety of n ational polls on social conflict since then have shown mixed results. We will have to wait and see exactly how these hard times will reshape our social fabric. But they certainly it, and all the more so the longer they extend.36.By saying ―to find silver linings‖(Line 1,Para.2)the author suggest that the jobless try to___.[A]seek subsidies from the govemment[B]explore reasons for the unermployment[C]make profits from the troubled economy[D]look on the bright side of the recession37.According to Paragraph 2,the recession has made people_____.[A]realize the national dream[B]struggle against each other[C]challenge their lifestyle[D]reconsider their lifestyle38.Benjamin Friedman believe that economic recessions may_____.[A]impose a heavier burden on immigrants[B]bring out more evils of human nature[C]Promote the advance of rights and freedoms[D]ease conflicts between races and classes39.The research of Till Von Wachther suggests that in recession graduates from elite universities tend to _____.[A]lag behind the others due to decreased opportunities[B]catch up quickly with experienced employees[C]see their life chances as dimmed as the others‘[D]recover more quickly than the others40.The author thinks that the influence of hard times on society is____.[A]certain[B]positive[C]trivial[D]destructivePart BDirections:Read the following text and answer the questions by finding information from the left column that corresponds to each of the marked details given in the right column. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEERT 1.(10 points)―Universal history, the history of what man has accomplished in this world, is at bot t om the History of the Great Men who have worked here,‖ wrote the Victorian sage Tho mas Carlyle. Well, not any more it is not.Suddenly, Britain looks to have fallen out with its favourite historical form. This coul d be no more than a passing literary craze, but it also points to a broader truth about ho w we now approach the past: less concerned with learning from forefathers and more inte rested in feeling their pain. Today, we want empathy, not inspiration. From the earliest days of the Renaissance, the writing of history meant recounting the exemplary lives of great men. In 1337, Petrarch began work on his rambling writing De Viris Illustribus –On Famous Men, highlighting the virtus (or virtue) of classical heroes. Petrarch celebrated their greatness in conquering fortune and rising to the top. This was t he biographical tradition which Niccolo Machiavelli turned on its head. In The Prince, thechampioned cunning, ruthlessness, and boldness, rather than virtue, mercy and justice, as the skills of successful leaders.Over time, the attributes of greatness shifted. The Romantics commemorated the leadi ng painters and authors of their day, stressing the uniqueness of the artist's personal exper ience rather than public glory. By contrast, the Victorian author Samual Smiles wrote Self -Help as a catalogue of the worthy lives of engineers , industrialists and explores . "The valuable examples which they furnish of the power of self-help, if patient purpose, resolut e working and steadfast integrity, issuing in the formulation of truly noble and many char acter, exhibit,"wrote Smiles."what it is in the power of each to accomplish for himself"His biographies of James Walt, Richard Arkwright and Josiah Wedgwood were held up as be acons to guide the working man through his difficult life. This was all a bit bourgeois for Thomas Carlyle, who focused his biographies on the truly heroic lives of Martin Luther, Oliver Cromwell and Napoleon Bonaparte. These epo chal figures represented lives hard to imitate, but to be acknowledged as possessing higher authority than mere mortals.Communist Manifesto. For them, history did nothing, it possessed no immense wealth nor waged battles:―It is man, real, living man who does all that.‖ And history should be the story of the masses and their record of struggle. As such, it needed to appreciate the economic realities, the social contexts and power relations in which each epoch stood. Fo r:―Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly found, given and transmitted from the past.‖This was the tradition which revolutionized our appreciation of the past. In place of Thomas Carlyle, Britain nurtured Christopher Hill, EP Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. His tory from below stood alongside biographies of great men. Whole new realms of understa nding —from gender to race to cultural studies —were opened up as scholars unpicked the multiplicity of lost societies. And it transformed public history too: downstairs becam e just as fascinating as upstairs.Section III Translation46.Directions:Translate the following text from English into Chinese.Write your translation on ANS WER SHEET2.(15 points)When people in developing countries worry about migration, they are usually concerne d at the prospect of ther best and brightest departure to Silicon Valley or to hospitals anduniversities in the developed world ,These are the kind of workers that countries like Bri tian ,Canada and Australia try to attract by using immigration rules that privilege college graduates .Lots of studies have found that well-educated people from developing countries are p articularly likely to emigrate .A big survey of Indian households in 2004 found that nearl y 40%of emigrants had more than a high-school education, compared with around 3.3%of a ll Indians over the age of 25.This "brain drain "has long bothered policymakers in poor c ountries ,They fear that it hurts their economies ,depriving them of much-needed skilled w orkers who could have taught at their universities ,worked in their hospitals and come up with clever new products for their factories to make .Section IV WritingPart A47.DirectionsSuppose you have found something wrong with the electronic dictionary that you bou ght from an onlin store the other day ,Write an email to the customer service center to1)make a complaint and2)demand a prompt solutionYou should write about 100words on ANSERE SHEET 2Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter ,Use "zhang wei "instead .48、write an essay based on the following table .In your writing you should1)describe the table ,and2)give your commentsYou should write at least 150 words(15points) 某公司员工工作满意度调查完形填空:1.B2.B3.A4.A5.C6.B7.C8.A9.D 10.B11.D 12.B 13.C 14.D 15.B16.A 17.C 18.B 19.B 20.DTEXT1:21. It is very kind of you to invite me to your house and I really look forward to going to your party and sharing your happy experiences abroad. Much to my regret, I will be absent from your party owing to the fact that the College Entrance Exam is just around the corner, for which I am now really busy preparing. What’s worse, I have caught a bad cold lately and I am really not myself. Anyway, we will have many more chances to get together. Shall we make it after the Exam? I am truly sorry. I hope you will forgive me and accept my sincere apologies. I look forward to your reply. Yours truly, Li Hua 听力原文: Text 1 W: Living in the city is very convenient. M: I think so, but I often think of living in the country. It’s peaceful and quiet. W: But don’t you think houses in the country can be cold in winter? M: I don’t think so. Text 2 M: May I see Professor Kent, please? W: I’m sorry, he’s been ill since last Friday. M: When can I expect to see him then? W: I think he’ll be back for his regular office hours next Thursday, but you might telephone Tuesday or Wednesday to make sure. Text 3 W: Is there anything I can do before we go? M: I can’t think of anything else. I have turned off the electricity and finished packing our clothes. You had better telephone a taxi while I am locking the suitcase. Text 4 W: I had hoped that I could see George here today. M: He was planning to come, but his wife’s father fell down some stairs and they had to take him to a doctor. Text 5 M: Mary, that’s beautiful. How is John? W: Thank you. He’s fine. M: You look down. What happened? W: As a matter of fact, I’m a little worried. I think John will raise the roof as soon as he sees the bills for this month’s expenses. Text 6 M: Martha said students can cake examinations online? W: This is a part of the long-distance education. It’s widely used now, and it’s convenient. Most of the net schools have their branches nationwide, which are in charge of arranging the examinations. M: You mean that long-distance examinations also need examination rooms and supervisors? W: Commonly it’s like this, but the questions and answers of the test are transmitted by the Internet. M: I see. Thus students can take examinations at any place convenient for them. W: Yes, some courses give out the results on the Internet as soon as the tests are over. Text 7 M: Good afternoon. W: Good afternoon. M: I will soon start my study here for a master’s degree, so I am quite concerned about what resources and support services are available. W: Good questions. May I know your major? M: Bioengineering. W: I see. The university is well-equipped. Especially the school you are in owns a Learning Resource Center which provides facilities for personal study and small group work. M: Fantastic. When is it open? W: It opens five days a week, usually 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. M: You mean students don’t have access to the center at weekends? W: Well, it may be open at weekends for students if they work on an important project. However, you need to ask your tutor to book it in advance. M: Thanks a lot. W: Not at all. Text 8 W: Did you enjoy your visit or not, Jack? M: I did, not only the dinner but the atmosphere as well. What about yours, Linda? W: I did, too. The Tylers like to invite foreign students to visit them, and so do their friends. M: The family I visited was quite large: Mr. Selby, his wife, two little boys, a baby girl, andtheir grandmother. W: Should I send both a thank-you note and a gift of some sort? M: No, not both. A thank-you note is usual, but a gift isn’t. W: Then I’ll probably either send a note or call them up. M: Do the Tylers have a house or a flat? W: A flat, with two bathrooms and a view of the city. M: I bet you saw the whole flat. W: On the contrary, I didn’t even see the bedrooms or kitchen. I was afraid to ask to see them. M: But in this country people like to show you their homes. W: Thanks for that information. Next time I’ll be more familiar with these customs. Text 9 W: What are you reading, Tom? You look so attentive. M: I am reading the Entertainment Section of the newspaper. Oh, do you believe that nearly half of the section is taken up by some stars’ affairs. I wasted money to buy such rubbish news. W: In almost every form of media, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of the stars. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news. M: The practice leads people to pay more attention to these matters than they otherwise would. W: The media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them. M: Yes, you are right. And many stories about famous stars are untrue. They are only gossip reported to increase the sales of magazines and other media. W: They are unfair to the famous and mislead the public. M: I believe that the media should pay more attention to matters other than the private lives of public figures. W: In this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests. M: I completely agree with you. Text 10 One day a thirsty fox fell into a well as she was getting a drink of water. She could not find a way to climb back up. After a short time, a thirsty goat came to the edge of the well, seeing the fox below him, then he asked if the water was safe to drink. Thinking quickly, the fox said the water was pure and delicious and suggested that the goat come down to have a drink. The goat immediately jumped into the well. After he had enough to drink, he asked the fox how he could get back up and out of the well. The fox replied, “I have a plan. Put your front legs against the wall, and hold your horns up. I will climb up your back, onto your horns and then Iwill jump out of the well. Once I’m out, I’ll help you get out.” The goat agreed, and the fox quickly got out of the well. The goat called out to her, “Oh, Ms. Fox, you said you would help me get out of the well.” The fox called down to the goat, “Friend, if you had half as many brains as you have hairs on your chin, you would not have jumped into the well withoutfirst thinking about how you would get out.”。

I am on the planning committee for a one-day cycling event called “Tour de Cure”. It’s sponsored by the ADA and the profits(利润) of this event are used for diabetes research and program funding. While I was talking to people about our “Tour de Cure” event in downtown Denver one day, I met a young boy wearing a red hat from Oklahoma named Jack. I think he was 10-11 years old. It was the jar of red rubber wrist bands (The American Diabetes Association diabetes awareness wrist bands) that caught Jack’s eye. These are the bands we give out to people who have diabetes, who have a family member who has diabetes or to those people who know someone who has diabetes. People wear these for a variety of reasons: in memory of a loved one, to promote diabetes awareness and to show support for people who have diabetes. Jack walked towards me eyeing the jar and then he said, “Can I have one of those?” So, I replied to Jack, “Do you have someone in your family who has diabetes?” Jack said, “No, but I know someone who has diabetes.” So I gave him one to wear for his friend. Then, Jack began looking at our “Tour de Cure” photo album. When Jack had finished and was about to go, he looked up at me and said, “Would you take a donation?” I was surprised to hear this from a 10-11-year-old boy, but I said, “Yes.” I took the lid of our donation container off as Jack was reaching into his pocket. His hand came out clinched around the donation he was about to make. It was my impression that what he had in his hand was everything he had in his pocket, as he did not count it. After Jack dropped his donation into the container, I gave him a high-five, as I so often do to acknowledge an accomplishment or an appreciation. I also gave him a handshake before he parted. After Jack left, I counted his gift?3.00. I then realizoed that he gave all he had, without counting the cost. The heart of a child made me smile that day. Thank you, Jack. What attracted Jack to walk towards the author?A. The jarB. The hatC. The photo albumD. The donation container It was probable that Jack wore a wrist band to _____. A. prove his confidence in fighting diabetes B. promote his strong diabetes awareness C. express his love for his family members D. support his friend who has diabetes That Jack wanted to make a donation surprised the author because the author thought_____.A. Jack was telling a lie to himB. Jack was playing a joke on himC. Jack was brave enough to do soD. Jack was a great person for his age What would be the best title of the passage?A. A lovely boy I metB. The heart of a childC. A moving day I spentD. The donation of a child B Bluegills, which are small enough to fit in your hand, are the fish that are protecting our water. They are common freshwater fish native to America and are also known as bream or sunfish. According to the Associated Press, the bluegills were originally used by the Army to make sure water was safe. Now San Francisco, New York City, Washington D.C and several other cities use the bluegill monitoring system. The bluegill system works by constantly filling the fish tank with city or town water. A small group of bluegills swim in the local water and are closely monitored. Bluegills are very sensitive to their environment. Changes in the environment cause their behavior and breathing patterns to change. They cough if the water is polluted. Fish cough by flexing their gills(鳃)to get rid of unwanted particles, like grain of sand, from their breathing passages. If the bluegills are coughing the computer sends analarm via email. The bluegills in New York City discovered an diesel spill(柴油外溢)hours before the usual monitors. Adding the bluegill system to regular water protection methods resulted in an early warning and safer water. People use the bluegill system to monitor water supplies_____. A. because they have high sensibility to their environment B. because they are used to swimming in the fresh water C. because they can cough by means of their gills D. because they are able to send e-mails by computers Which of the following statements about Bluegills is NOT true? But the way in which education is understood has changed completely. In the past, stern and rough ways were used to bring up a child, and unfeeling rules were supposed to create the excellent personality of the typical gentleman. Nowadays, society is much more open-minded and it does not put a great value on being so strict with children although this doesn’t mean that opinions regarding this subject do not differ. On the one hand, there are those in favor of a strict teacher and the narrow-minded people who consider that only a rough hand is able to properly educate a child. Firstly, according to them, children should fear their teachers, as this is the only way in which they will pay attention. In addition to that, they think that a pupil will never learn because he enjoys doing so and takes interest in what he is doing, but only because that is what he is supposed to do if he doesn’t want a low grade. On the other hand, there are people who believe that only by having a friendly attitude andlistening to the opinions of their pupils can a teacher do his job at a high standard. Their opinion is that there has to be a connection between teachers and students before any satisfying result can be achieved. Luckily, more and more teachers understand this fact and are doing their best to get over the strict rules and get in touch with their students. However, this does not mean that a teacher shouldn’t be a bit tougher when he feels that things are getting out of hand. All in all, I must say that a good teacher is a teacher that has the ability to be kind and strict at the same time, thus winning the respect and interest of his students. That means that while Italians may enjoy a glass of wine or beer, they don’t usually get very drunk. That’s not true any more. The new study by the Italian National Health Institute found that 63 percent of Italians under age 18 get drunk on the weekends. Now, the city of Milan has created a law that will stop anyone under 16 from buying alcohol. Anyone who sells or gives alcohol to a person under 16 can be fined up to $700. Young people who feel that the new law is unfair should go to the US for some perspective (观点). The US has the highest drinking age in the world: It’s illegal for anyone under 21 to buy alcohol, and stores or restaurants that are caught selling alcohol to people under the legal age risk losing their licenses. Many young Americans complain that the drinking laws are unfair: They are allowed to vote in elections and join the army at age 18, so why wait another three years just to buy a bottle of beer? These young people have found help in an unusual place. Last year, more than 100 presidents of US universities joined together to ask lawmakers to consider changing the drinking age. They argued that the law doesn’t stop underage college kids from getting drunk it just makes them want to drink more. For now, the law seems unlikely to change. But US teenagers who want alcohol can go north to Canada, where the drinking age is 18-19, or south to Mexico where the legal age is 18. Throughout much of Asia, Africa and Europe, the legal drinking age ranges 16-18. In plenty of places though, the official drinking age is ignored, and even young children can buy alcohol if they have the money to pay for it. No matter how old you are, you should always be responsible with alcohol. Teenagers in Milan are now learning that their reckless (不顾后果的) drinking behavior may come at a high price.
