VOCABULARY
REVIEW
In this lesson, you will increase your vocabulary by learning words
to talk about reusing software.
Warm-up:
Read the de nitions below to your class and get them to tell you what word you are talking about. As they come up with the vocabulary write it on the whiteboard. For higher level classes you can reverse this process by giving students the vocabulary and have them give you correct de nitions. Do not write the vocabulary on the whiteboard in the order that it is shown below.
start work on to begin a new piece of work. start from scratch to begin something completely new, without any earlier versions to help you.
follow a procedure to do something according to rules, or in the way that it is usually done.
work closely together to work with another person or other people, on the same piece of work, so that you are always sharing ideas and knowledge.in the early stages during the first part of a process.
work to a tight deadline to have to finish a piece of work by a particular date, which means you must work very fast. obtain good results to finish a project successfully. down the line at a later stage of a process. come to an end to finish (used about a process).
ship to finish developing something and deliver it to customers.

In the online lesson the student heard a conversation between a man and a woman about working in a team. Pick a student to help you model the
dialogue again and tell the class that you want them to note down the order in which you read the new vocabulary.
Man: There’s nothing as exciting as this moment!
Woman: When you sit down together to start work on a new project. Man: Something brand new that you’re starting from scratch. You’ll have
to create it from your own ideas, because there are no rules or
procedures to follow.Woman: Working closely together can be hard…
Man: …especially in the early stages, before you get used to working
together.
Woman: …but your team spirit grows and grows as you work to the tight
deadline. You know that if you work as a team, you’re sure to obtain good results!
Man: Then, a few months down the line, when it all comes to an end...
Woman: …when you’re nally ready to ship the product…
Man: …you feel so happy and so sad at the same time!Woman: Yes!...No procedures to follow.Man: Nope, just our own ideas.Woman: Scary.Man: Co ee?Woman: Yeah.
In whole-class mode ask students to tell you which vocabulary item was mentioned rst, second etc. Alternatively you could use this dialogue as an information gap exercise.

You are now going to do a speaking activity to help you to use the vocabulary in this lesson. This is the situation:
Preparation:
Put students in pairs and assign student A to be Project Manager and student B to be a Senior Manager.
Situation:
Student A has been in charge of a project to design a new piece of software (students can choose what kind of software). The project has now nished and the product is about to be shipped.
Student B is the Senior Manager who calls student A in to discuss how the project went.
Remind students that as well as using the vocabulary from today’s lesson they can also expand and practice other language.
