He kayaked in ocean fjords, tracked a rare deer, and was stranded on a beach during a storm. He also got used to sleeping on the ground—at times in a room filled with 16 people –and living in simple conditions. Those who took part, called “volunteers”, both contributed and learned. The prince helped locals build wooded walkways and buildings, and taught English to schoolchildren. He was described by other volunteers as hardworking, humble, andlaid-back. As one said, “He struck a really good balance between working hard and having fun…getting on with everyone, and taking on the team spirit.”The prince said he liked being treated as an “equal” by other volunteer, who came from all walks of life. Around 20 percent were from problem backgrounds, some having had troubles with drugs or crime. It seems that there’s a lot more to education than university and books, and the Chilean forests and a little contact with regular people may do a lot of a British prince.Uint3II. Beginning in the early 20th century, the two-parent family known asthe nuclear family was the predominant American family type.Generally children live with their parents until they go away to a college or university, or until they acquir e their own jobs and move into their own apartment or home.In the early mid-20th century, the family typically was the sole wage earner, and the mothe r was the children’s principle care giver. Today, often both parents hold jobs. Dual-earner families are the predominant type for families with children in the United States. Increasingly, one of the parents has a non-standard shift; that is, a shift that does not start in the morning and end in later afternoon. In these families, one of the parents manages the children while the other works.Prior to school, adequate day care of children is necessary for dual-earner families. There’s a new stone on the gem market, tanzanite, and it is giving diamonds some serious competition.Tanzanite was one of a number of gems discovered in East Africa inthe 1960s. The new colors and varieties changed the gem market. But the real gem among these stones was tanzanite, discovered in 1967 in Tanzania. The stone was named after its country of origin by New York’s Tiffany and Co. which introduced it to the world. It draws one’s attention quickly with its color—blue, purple or bronze, depending on the direction it is viewed from.More important for its value, though, is its rarity. Tanzanite has been found in only one small area, near Mount Kilimanjaro, inTanzania. And its supply will probably be fully mined in the next two decades. As one mining official puts it, “It should never have really occurred in the first place. It did occur. And only this one deposit on this entire planet that is known…mak es it more than a thousand times rarer than diamonds. And certainly within the next 15 to 20 years, there will be no more tanzanite to be mined.”The current value of the tanzanite market, at . $10 billion, is equivalent to that of diamonds. And so another saying “Diamonds are forever” may lose some of its meaning.Uint4II. Basic Listening PracticeKeys: 3. AIII. BV. Let’s TalkScriptVI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: The Role Memory Plays in Our LifeScriptKeys:Task 2: Two Essential Factors in an Interview ScriptWhen ap plying for a job, especially a job you really want. It’s not usually to feel nervous and anxious. Sometimes it’s this anxiety, not our qualifications, that keeps us from obtaining our dream job.So you must overcome your nervousness and build up confidence. This often involves two factors: one mental and the other physica l. Mentally, it’s important to prepare yourself for the interview without obsessing over it. Remember, it might be your dream job, but it won’t be the end of the world if you don’t get it. Tell yourself that the company would be lucky to get you; and if they choose someone else, it will be their loss. In essence, you need to build your self-confidence. Your ability to answer all questions without hesitation will certainly impress the interviewer. Now that you are mentally ready for any question that might be thrown your way, it’s time to work on your physical presentation. No matter what position you are applying for, your physical appearance at the interview will be a big factor in the final determination. It’s always a good idea to wear a suit; it doesn’t have to be a designer suit, but something plain and conservative. Do not dress too informally. For example, don’t wear a red fashionable jacket for your interview. Make sure, too, that it is clean and pressed. This may seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised how careless some applicants are. While it’s not necessary to visit the beauty salon before your interview, make sure that your nail are well-manicured, and your hair is styled carefully and neatly.Task3: An Interview That Upsets the BossScriptNews ReportA Galaxy of Film Prize WinnersScriptThe European Film Awards—First Hollywood, then Cannes, and now PairsThe European Film Awards ceremony was held in Pairs in early December, honorin g the best in European and world films.Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark was the overall winner of the evening, receiving awards for the best European film and best actress—Bjork..The audiences was disappointed, however, as neither von Trier, Bjork, nor the Oscar-winning Italian director Roberto Benigni showed up to accept awards.Still, other prize winners did come. By extension, the word became, as recently as the 18th century, synonymous with “an individual commercial enterprise”. When referring to activities, the terms business and industry sometimes appear interchangeable. Thus a fisherman might say either that he is in the “fishing business”, which is a bit colloquial or that he works in the “fishing industry”, which sounds somewhat formal. The word “trade” may serve as an equivalent of both “business” and “industry”.People establish business in order to perform economic activities. With some exceptions, such as non-profit organizations andinstitutions of the government, businesses exist to product profit. In other words, the owners and operators of a business have receiving or generating a financial return for their time, effort and capital as one of their main objectives. One can classify businesses in many different ways. In recent years, service businesses have become increasingly popular. They offer intangible products and typically have different, usually smaller, capital requirements than manufacturers. Distributors need smaller funds than manufacturers. Most laws specify the forms that a business can take, and a body of commercial law has been developed for each type. Some common types include partnerships, corporations, also called limited liability companies, and sole ownerships.Task3: An office boy or a billionaireNews ReportA Historic Settlement between the Law and Business ScriptBill Gates, Microsoft Chairman:We hope that when the state attorney general fully reviewed the settlement, they will also agree that it’s the right way forward. Pamela complains that the government just squanders people’s hard-earned tax money on some unnecessary projects. But Alan does not mind paying taxes, saying it means he is earning money, which is better than living on charity. Pamela insists that if the poor would just get jobs, taxes would bee much lower. Alan disagrees, saying most people would rather work than receive charity, but sometimes there are no jobs that they aretrained for. But Pamela asserts that the jobless people should take the needed training to upgrade their skills and knowledge to become more employable. Alan believes that some of the government taxdollars are already directed to training and upgrading programs that help the poor to get jobs. When Pamela says some of the unemployed don’t want to work, preferring to have handouts, Alan points outthat some people have to be educated to realize how much fuller their life would be if they ere not dependent on charity. Pamela is, however, more down-to-earth, thinking the government should attack unemployment by reducing the tax rate. That would give people more money; then, they would spend more, which would create more jobs for the poor.Task 2: A Professional GamblerScriptKeys: TFTFTTask3: Fighting Teen Smoking ScriptKes: 1D 3. Barry Venable said. "Ways we're going about that include blocking public access to the Web sites, because that's the way this worm works, to prevent it from using our networks to propagate (繁殖) itself."The virus exploits a security flaw (缺陷) in certain Microsoft network servers. The flaw was announced last month when a patch was released to fix it."To protect our DoD web sites from being compromised, DoD organizations have been told to review the status of the Internet information servers... to make sure that all the patches that were previously installed had been installed," says Venable.Only a handful of the major Defense Department sites, with the suffix ".mil," appear currently accessible to the public, including the central public affairs site DefenseLink and the military services' main homepages. Public access is blocked to information connected to those sites, and others such as the National Missile Defense site and the US Air Force's European site. Registered Department of Defense personnel continue to have access to the sites, Venable said.1.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. The Code Red Worm.B. Blocking public access.B. Shutting down e-mail.C. Reviewing the status of the Internet information servers.D. Having necessary patches installed.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. For an increasing number of students at American universities, old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs. Coupled with the aging of the baby-boom (生育高峰) generation, a longer life span means that the nation's elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995. The change poses serious questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well. "In addition to the doctors, we're going to need more sociologists, biologists (生物学家), city planners and specialized lawyers," says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Gerontology (老年学).Lawyers can specialize in "elder law", which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination (歧视). Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. "Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money," one professor says.Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She began college as a biology major but found she was "really bored with bacteria". So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, "I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying."6.The words "... old is suddenly in" (Para. 1) most probablymeans "_______".A. America has suddenly become a nation of old peopleB. gerontology has suddenly become popularC. more elderly professors are found on American campusesD. American colleges have realized the need of enrolling olderstudents7.With the aging of America, lawyers can benefit _______.A. from the adoption of the "elder law"B. from rendering special services to the elderlyC. by enriching their professional knowledgeD. by winning the trust of the elderly to promote their owninterests8.Why can businessmen make money in the emerging eldermarket?A. Retirees are more generous in spending money.B. They can employ more gerontologists.C. The elderly possess an enormous purchasing power.D. There are more elderly people working than before.9.Who can make big money in the new century according to thepassage?A. Retirees who are business-minded.B. The volunteer workers in retirement homes.C. College graduates with an MBA or law degree.D. Professionals with a good knowledge of gerontology.10.It can be seen from the passage that the expansion ofAmerica's elderly population ________.A. will provide good job opportunities in many areasB. will impose an unbearable burden on societyC. may lead to nursing home abuse and age discriminationD. will create new fields of study in universitiesQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. The decline in moral standards—which has long concerned social analysts—has at last captured the attention of average Americans. And Jean Bethke Elshtain, for one, is glad. The fact that ordinary citizens are now starting to think seriously about the nation's moral climate, says this ethics (伦理学) professor at the University of Chicago, is reason to hope that new ideas will come forward to improve it.But the challenge is not to be underestimated. Materialism and individualism in American society are the biggest obstacles. "The thought that 'I'm in it for me' has become deeply rooted in the national consciousness," Ms. Elshtain says. Some of this can be attributed to the decay of traditional communities, in which neighbors looked out for one another, she says. With today's greater mobility and with so many couples working, those bonds have been weakened, replaced by a greater emphasis on self.In a 1996 poll of Americans, loss of morality topped the list of the biggest problems facing the US. And Elshtain says the public is correct to sense that: Data show that Americans are struggling with problems unheard of in the 1950s, such as classroom violence and a high rate of births to unmarried mothers. The desire for a higher moral standard is not a lament (挽歌) for some nonexistent "golden age," Elshtain says, nor is it a wishful (一厢情愿的) longing for a time that denied opportunities to women and minorities. Most people, in fact, favor a decrease in prejudice.Moral decline will not be reversed until people find ways to counter the materialism in society, she says. "Slowly, you recognize that the things that matter are those that can't be bought."11.Professor Elshtain is pleased to see that Americans ________.A. have adapted to a new set of moral standardsB. are longing for the return of the good old daysC. have realized the importance of material thingsD. are awakening to the lowering of their moral standards12.The moral decline of American society is caused mainly by________.A. its growing wealthB. the self-centeredness of individualsC. underestimating the impact of social changesD. the prejudice against women and minorities13.Which of the following characterizes the traditionalcommunities?A. Great mobility.B. Emphasis on individual effort.C. Concern for one's neighbors.D. Ever-weakening social bonds.14.In the 1950s, classroom violence ________.A. was something unheard ofB. attracted a lot of public attentionC. was by no means a rare occurrenceD. began to appear in analysts' data15.According to Elshtain, the current moral decline may bereversed ________.A. if people can return to the "golden age"B. when women and men enjoy equal rightsC. when people rid themselves of prejudiceD. if less emphasis is laid on material things。

Most job interviews start with chit-chat type of questions. They are designed to break the ice and get the conversation flowing. Examples are questions like"Did it take you long to get here?","Did you find the place all right?","Were you able to find parking ?" Most of these just require a"yes, no problem" type of response ; you can elaborate if you wish. However, ensure that you don’t provide information that will give them a bad impression . If you say something like"It took me ages to get here. The traffic was so bad; I hate traveling to this side of town", it would not make a good impression. If this is the place where you would be working, they would automatically be worried that you will be late for work everyday . More questions will be asked to find out a bit more about you. They might be historical questions regarding your previousemployment or education. , or they may be hypothetical questions starting with"What if...?". These are aimed at finding out how you would handle a situation or at finding out your personal views in certain areas. Whenever answering a job interview question, give as much information as you can. Tell them why, where, when and how. In other words use samples to prove what you are saying. For example, during the SARS epidemic, there was a high demand for facial masks in several countries --- and many entrepreneurs capitalized on this business idea.A similar effect is also created by larger social trends . There is much more of a demand for home-care services for the elderly than is currently being supplied. And the trend for pets to be treated as family members continues, creating demand for all kinds of pet-related services that didn't exist even ten years ago.Look at existing businesses and the products and services they offer, and then determine if there's a need for more of those products or services. If there is, develop business ideas to fit the market gap.Do you have any ideas for starting a business now? Write your business ideas down.Think about them for some time. Keep an open mind and continue to assess everything you read and hear from a business point of vie w. Y ou don't have to run with the first business idea you think of; you want to discover the idea that's best suited to your skills and desires.Dream, think, plan, and you'll be ready to transform that business idea into the business you've always wanted .Questions 1 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. An engineer retired after serving 1.loyally for 2. . It is much more than just a great workout. You get to be outside of the confines of a gym and be together with nature. You breathe in the fresh, clean air while the city life you endured all week just fades away. You are suddenly transported somewhere else. You are suddenly in a place where you can appreciate the untouched, simplistic beauty of nature. The trees are green, the wild flowers are growing and the woods are filled with activity. Once you experience it, you're hooked.Whether hiking in the deserts of Arizona or the mountains of Alberta, you suddenly realize you are not alone and there is something much bigger at work. There is a realization that life is precious and you think deeply about your life.Another wonderful part of hiking is that you can participate at any level and it is, for the most part, free. It is a great way to escape the rat race, even during the week. If you have any problems you need to solve, hiking is really good for clearing your head and removing stress. If hiking sounds intimidating to you, it is essentially walking on a whole new level. Experts have spoken about the benefits of walking for years. Walking doesn't stress your legs as much as runningand countless studies agree walking leads to weight loss and better health. It is good for your heart, reduces illness and has even been shown to enhance your thinking. So why wouldn't you want to do it?1. What makes hiking different from other forms of exercise?A. In the early years of the 20th century, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri. At first he thought it was transmitted (传送) by a germ (细菌). He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on rice which had had the external husk (壳) removed from the grain, called "white rice." It was thought this would be easier for weak, sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was confirmed when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on scraps (碎片) from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to isolate the germ he thought was causing the disease, but his experiments wereinterrupted by a hospital official, who ruled that the huskless polished rice was too good for chickens. The chickens should be fed cheap rice with the external covering still on the grain, called "brown rice."Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider the possibility that eating brown rice somehow prevented or cured beri-beri—even that a lack of some ingredient in the husk might be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent beri-beri was shortly afterwards isolated from rice husks and is now known as Vitamin B. The white rice, though more expensive, was keeping alive the disease the hospital was trying to cure.6. From the context, what do you think the author mentions in the paragraph that is just before this first paragraph?A. One example of the importance of vitamins.B. One example of the benefits of eating healthy foods.C. One example of the dangers of a restricted diet.D. One example of the benefits of various vitamins.7. Huskless, white rice ________.A. was cheaper than brown riceB. was less beneficial to the body than brown riceC. was more beneficial to the body than brown riceD. cured beri-beri10. The ingredient missing from white rice ________.A. was Vitamin BB. did not affect the chickensC. was named the Eijkman vitaminD. has never been accurately identified。

Jenny knows the professor is really good. But Harrison warns her that the professor is good, only if students are hand-workers, for he expects a lot. After class, Jenny admits that half of what the professor said went over her head, and Harrison assures her that a lot of what the professor said is explained in the reading. He’s never going to learn the value of money that way.‖―Don’t worry, honey,‖ Mom said, ―I taped the $100 check to the cover of his book, but I put the $1,000 one between the pages in Charper13!‖Keys: TFFFTTask3: How to Get Straight A’sScriptIt is interesting to note how straight A students achieve academic excellence. Here, according to education experts and students themselves are the secrets of super-achievers.First, they know how to set priorities. Top students allow no intrusions on study time. Once the books are open or the computer is turned on, phone calls go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored. Study is business, and business comes before recreation. Also, good students can study anywhere and everywhere. Claudia Hill, an Arizona State University business professor recalls a cross-country runner who worked out every day. Hill persuaded him to use his spare time to memorize biology term. Then he posted a list of biology terms on the mirror in the bathroom. He learned a fewterms every day while brushing his teeth. Eventually, he scored high on the final examination. Moreover, top students schedule their time well. Study times are strictly a matter of personal preference. Some work late at night when the house is quiet. Others awake early. Still others study as soon as they come home from school when the work is fresh in their minds. All agreed, however, on the need for consistency. A student says, ―Whatever I was doing, I maintained a certain period of time every day for studying.‖Another important characteristic of super-achievers is that they know hoe to read, According to a book entitled Getting Straight A’s, the secret of good reading is to be ―an active reader-one who continually asks questions that lead to a full understanding of the author’s message‖.1.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about super—achievers starting tostudy?2.What did the cross-country runner do to score high on the exam?3.What is the good thing all top students agree on?4.What does the speaker mean by ―an active reader‖?5.What is the main idea of the passage?Kes: 1B 2.C3. A lot of young teachers want to be promoted to a professorship.A: What you said has given us a fairly clear picture of a western professor’s primary responsibilities. Thank you very much for your time.B:You’re welcomeV. Let’s TalkScriptHi, everybody. My topic today is ―Problems with Our Educational System‖.There are a lot of things in our educational system that I don’t agree with. It seems that educators just want to give standardized tests, which focus only on academic performance but neglect students’ abilities and interests in other areas. I think there’re a lot of people who are very intelligent, but haven’t had the opportunities they could’ve had, had they been educated in a broader-minded educational systems. I feel that a lot of courses that students are focused to take in high school are too academic, and, as a result, many kids lost their interest in learning.Educators have failed to recognize various kinds of intelligence. They often exert a lot of pressure on students to be as well-rounded as possible. I think being well-rounded isn’t really possible. And as a consequence some students who are believed to be intelligent can’t get into good colleges if they, for example, haven’t scored well on the math section, even if they ate brilliant writers.Another thing that disturbs me is that the so-called ―weak students‖are separated from the rest of the school. Some kids are kept in a separate class id their grades are lower then others. And they’ve very aware of their social position, you know. I think it causes them to act in a way that is not really positive. They’re just acting in a way that they are expected to act. Often their grades go from bad to worse. And that’s pretty sad to me. I think that many of the kids in those classed are intelligent, but never actually realize their potential because of the way they are treated very early on in their education.DebateSAMPLEA:Many ads about English classes for children say, ―Don’t let your kids lose the competition just because they start later.‖I quite agree. I hear young children often learn a foreign language faster then adults.B:It’s hard to say. Kids may learn the pronunciation better than adults, but adults usually learn vocabulary and grammar faster.A: You can learn vocabulary and grammar later on; but when you grow up, you can hardly change your pronunciation.B: But if they learn the wrong pronunciation from the beginning? If they don’t learn English when they are young in the right way, it’ll affect their English studiesA: Anyway, some good or ―key‖ schools give English tests to kids before admitting them.B: English is important, bur other subjects like Chinese and math ate equally important. If kids spend too much time on English, they have little time left for other subjects.A:Some people say that learning a foreign language can help develop children’s mental abilities such as memory, attention span and concentration, which will e of help in learning other subjects.B: But too much time for studying and too little left for playing, children’s moral and physical development will be affected. A: Well, it’s difficult for me to convince you, and vice versa. Let’s agree to disagree.VI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: Harvard UniversityScriptHarvard University is the oldest institute of highest learning in her United States. Founded 16years after the arrival of the Pilgrim at Plymouth, the university has grown from 9 students with a single master to the present enrollment of more than 18,000students, including undergraduates and students in 10 graduate and professor schools. Over14, 000 people work at Harvard, including more than 2,000 faculties. Harvard has produces six presidents of the United States and 34 Noel winners. During its early years, Harvard offered a classic academic course based on the model of English universities, but consistent with the prevailing Puritan philosophy. Although many of its graduates became ministers in Puritan church throughout New England, the university never formally affiliated with a specific religious group. Under President Pusey (1953-1971), Harvard started what was then the largest fund-raising campaign in the history of American higher education. It was an 82.5 million dollar program for the university. The program increased faculty salaries, broadened student aid, created new professorships, and expanded Harvard’s physical facilities.Neil L. Rudenstine took office as Harvard’s 26th president in 1001. As part of an overall effort to achieve greater coordination among the university’s school and faculties, Rudenstine encouraged academic planning and identified some of Harvard’s main intellectual priorities. He also stressed the important of the uni versity’s excellence in undergraduate education, the significance of keeping Harvard’s doors open to students from families of different economic backgrounds, the task of as aping the research university to an era of both rapid information growth and serious fund shortage.1.What is main idea of the passage?2.How many teachers did Harvard have at the very beginning?3.What was the role of religion at Harvard University was during is early years?4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an achievement of President Pusey’sfund-raising program?5.What did President Rudenstine do?Keys: 1.B 2.A 3.C 4.D 5.DTask 2: The Final ExamScriptAt a university, there were four sophomores taking a chemistry course. They were doing so well on all the quizzes, midterms, labs, that each had ―A‖so far for the semester. These four friends were so confident that on the weekend before finals, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and party with some friends there. They had a great time, but after all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to school until early Monday morning.Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final exam and explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had planned to come back in time for the final exam, but, unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn’t have a spare, and couldn’t get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the final. The professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the final the following day. The guys were relieved and elated. The next day, the professor placed them in separate room, hand each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. They took at the first problem, worth five points. It was a simple question on a chemical reaction. ―Cool,‖they thought at the same time, each one in his separate room, ―This is going to be easy.‖ Each finished the problem and then turned the page. On the second page was a question worth 95 points: ―Which of the tires was flat?‖Task3: Applying for a place in an American University ScriptInternational students often underestimate the amount of time required to apply for admission to a college or university in the United States. You should avoid this mistake by setting yourself a schedule that starts well in advance of the time you hope to begin your studies. When setting this timetable, always remember that doing things early is the best way forward. To find the institution or program that will best serve your academic or professional goals, allow yourself sufficient time to research thoroughly your options. Then meet the application deadlines of the university to which you apply. These may be as much as 10 months before the school term. The need for an early start holds true even if you can apply on the Internet. University websites and other academic Internet sites may provide quick and convenient access to the required application forms, but you still need time to research your options, contact teachers and institutions to obtain recommendation and transcripts of academic records, and sign up for required entrance exams, that is, standardized tests, in time to meet application deadlines. In fact, although some studentsdid score high on TOEFL and GRE, they were not admitted because they failed to meet the deadline. For Reference:1. They often underestimate the amount of time required.2. They must allow themselves sufficient time to research thoroughly their options3. They may provide quick and convenient access to the required application forms.4. They still need time to research your options, contact teachers and institutions to obtain recommendation and transcripts of academic records, and sign up for required entrance exams, that is, standardized tests.5. Because they failed to meet the deadline.News ReportPrince William in ChileScriptWhat goes into a prince’s education today? For Britain’s Prince William, nature played an important role in his education this last winter, as the future king went on a 10-week expedition in Chile with Raleigh International. The experience was a very different one for the prince. He kayaked in ocean fjords, tracked a rare deer, and was stranded on a beach during a storm. He also got used to sleeping on the ground—at times in a room filled with 16 people –and living in simple conditions. Those who took part, called ―volunteers‖, both contributed and learned. The prince helped locals build wooded walkways and buildings, and taught English to schoolchildren. He was described by other volunteers as hardworking, humble, and laid-back. As one said, ―He struck a really good balance between working hard and having fun…getting on with everyone, and taking on the team spirit.‖The prince said he liked being treated as an ―equal‖by other volunteer, who came from all walks of life. Around 20 percent were from problem backgrounds, some having had troubles with drugs or crime. It seems that there’s a lot more to education than university and books, and the Chilean forests and a little contact with regular people may do a lot of a British prince.。

Whether or not vegetarianism should be advocated for adults, it is definitely unsatisfactory for growing children, who need more protein than they can get from vegetable sources. Alacto-vegetarian (part milk, part vegetable) diet, which includes milk and milk products such as cheese, can, however, be satisfactory as long as enough milk and milk products are consumed.Meat and cheese are the best sources of usable animal protein and next come milk, fish and eggs.Slow and careful cooking of meat makes it more digestible and assists in the breaking down of the protein content by the body. When cooking vegetables, however, the vitamins, and in particular the water-soluble (溶解于水的) Vitamin C, should not be lost through over-cooking.With fruit, vitamin loss is too small to be important, because the cooking water is normally eaten along with the fruit, and natural chemicals in the fruit help to hold in the vitamin C.Most nutrition (营养) experts today would recommend a balanced diet containing elements of all foods, largely because of our need for sufficient vitamins. Vitamins were first called "added food factors" when they were discovered in 1906. Most foods contain these other substances necessary for health, in addition to carbohydrates (碳水化合物), fats, minerals and water. The most common deficiency in Western diets today is lack of vitamins. It talks about principles like “Mental Visualization”, that is, creating a picture in one’s mind of what is to be remembered. This reminds the man of the principle of “Association”, which means connecting what one wants to remember with something one is familiar with. Then the woman adds the principle of “Consolidation”, or reviewing one’s notes after class and absorbing the new materia l into what one has already learned. When the man promise to study sixteen hours a day, the woman recommends the principle of “Distributed Practice”, which favors shorter study sessions distributed over several days. Finally, the woman tells the man that memory is like a muscle, and that it needs exercise.Task 2: You forget my toast!Keys: FTFFFTask3: Memory-Improving TechniquesKes: 1A . DV. Let’s TalkVI. He was described by other volunteers as hardworking, humble, and laid-back. As one said, “He struck a really good balance between w orking hard and having fun…getting on with everyone, and taking on the team spirit.”The prince said he liked being treated as an “equal” by other volunteer, who came from all walks of life. Around 20 percent were from problem backgrounds, some having had troubles with drugs or crime. It seems that there’s a lot more to education than university and books, and the Chilean forests and a little contact with regular people may do a lot of a British prince. Beginning in the early 20th century, the two-parent family known as the nuclear family was the predominantAmerican family type. Generally children live with their parents until they go away to a college or university, or until they acquir e their own jobs and move into their own apartment or home.In the early mid-20th century, the family typically was the sole wage earner, and the mother was the children’s principle care giver. In recent years, many private companies and home-based day care centers have sprung up fulfill this need. Increasingly, a company’s arrangement of day care as well as government assistance to parents requiring day care is occurring.[News ReportPrince More Precious Than the DiamondScriptPeople have long known the saying “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” But this may be changing. There’s a new stone on the gem market, tanzanite, and it is giving diamonds some serious competition.Tanzanite was one of a number of gems discovered in East Africa in the 1960s. Tanzanite has been found in only one small area, near Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. And its supply will probably be fully mined in the next two decades. As one mining official puts it, “It should never have really occurred in the first place. It did occur. And only this one deposit on this entire planet that is known…ma kes it more than a thousand times rarer than diamonds. And certainly within the next 15 to 20 years, there will be no more tanzanite to be mined.”The current value of the tanzanite market, at . $10 billion, is equivalent to that of diamonds. And so anothe r saying “Diamonds are forever” may lose some of its meaning.Uint4|II. Basic Listening PracticeKeys: 3. AIII. While it’s not necessary to visit the beauty salon before your interview, make sure that your nail are well-manicured, and your hair is styled carefully and neatly.Task3: An Interview That Upsets the BossScriptNews Report'A Galaxy of Film Prize WinnersScriptThe European Film Awards—First Hollywood, then Cannes, and now PairsThe European Film Awards ceremony was held in Pairs in early December, honorin g the best in European and world films.Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark was the overall winner of the evening, receiving awards for the best European film and best actress—Bjork..The audiences was disappointed, however, as neither von Trier, Bjork, nor the Oscar-winning Italian director Roberto Benigni showed up to accept awards.Still, other prize winners did come. By extension, the word became, as recently as the 18th century, synonymous with “an individual commercial enterprise”. When referring to activities, the terms busi ness and industry sometimes appear interchangeable. Thus a fisherman might say either that he is in the “fishing business”, which is a bit colloquial or that he works in the “fishing industry”, which sounds somewhat formal. The word “trade” may serve as an equivalent of both “business” and “industry”.People establish business in order to perform economic activities. With some exceptions, such as non-profit organizations and institutions of the government, businesses exist to product profit. Alan disagrees, saying most people would rather work than receive charity, but sometimes there are no jobs that they are trained for. But Pamela asserts that the jobless people should take the needed training to upgrade their skills and knowledge to become more employable. Alan believes that some of the government tax dollars are already directed to training and upgrading programs that help the poor to get jobs. When Pamela says some of the unemployed don’t want to work, preferring to have handouts, Alan points out that some people have to be educated to realize how much fuller their life would be if they ere not dependent on charity. Pamela is, however, more down-to-earth, thinking the government should attack unemployment by reducing the tax rate. 新视野第三册2单元测试(含答案)Part 1 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice) (每小题:4 分)Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog. Summer is the ideal time of year for one of my favorite outdoor activities, hiking (徒步旅行). Walking doesn't stress your legs as much as running and countless studies agree walking leads to weight loss and better health. It is good for your heart, reduces illness and has even been shown to enhance your thinking. So why wouldn't you want to do it?1.What makes hiking different from other forms of exercise?A. It is a great workout.B. It is a summertime activity.C. It is an activity that slows breathing.D. It is an exercise that is done outside.2.What disappears for someone who is hiking?A. Green trees.B. Beautiful nature.C. City life.D. Precious things.3.Once you take up hiking in nature as something you do, you________.A. feel much bigger than beforeB. love it and want to do it oftenC. wish you lived outside of the cityD. look for new hiking places, like Arizona4.How do you feel after you've begun hiking?A. Intimidated.B. Thoughtful.C. Lonely.D. Free from stress.5.How is running different than walking?A. Running is harder on the legs.B. Running is better for weight loss.C. Running is good for a person's heart.D. Running is a cause for improved thinking.D C B D AQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Another example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as "beri-beri" (脚气病), which used to affect large numbers of Eastern peoples who lived mainly on rice. In the early years of the 20th century, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri. At first he thought it was transmitted (传送) by a germ (细菌). He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on rice which had had the external husk (壳) removed from the grain, called "white rice.”It was thought this would be easier for weak, sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was confirmed when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on scraps (碎片) from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to isolate the germ he thought was causing the disease, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who ruled that the huskless polished rice was too good for chickens. The white rice, though more expensive, was keeping alive the disease the hospital was trying to cure.6.From the context, what do you think the author mentions inthe paragraph that is just before this first paragraph?A. One example of the importance of vitamins.B. One example of the benefits of eating healthy foods.C. One example of the dangers of a restricted diet.D. One example of the benefits of various vitamins.7.The disease "beri-beri" ________.A. kills large numbers of Western peoplesB. is a vitamin deficiency diseaseC. is transmitted by diseased riceD. can be caught from diseased chickens8.The chickens Eijkman noticed in the hospital yard ________.A. couldn't digest the huskless riceB. proved beri-beri is transmitted by germsC. were later cooked for the patients' foodD. were suffering from vitamin deficiency9.Huskless, white rice ________.A. was cheaper than brown riceB. was less beneficial to the body than brown riceC. was more beneficial to the body than brown riceD. cured beri-beri10.The ingredient missing from white rice ________.A. was Vitamin BB. did not affect the chickensC. was named the Eijkman vitaminD. has never been accurately identifiedQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog.A strict vegetarian is a person who never in his life eats anything derived from animals. The main objection to vegetarianism (素食主义) on a long-term basis is the difficulty of getting enough protein—the body-building element in food. If you have ever been without meat or other animal foods for some days or weeks (say, for religious reasons) you will have noticed that you tend to get rather weak physically. You are glad when the fast (禁食) is over and you get your reward of a delicious meat meal.Proteins are built up from about twenty food elements called "amino acids" (氨基酸), which are found in greater amounts in animal protein than in vegetable protein. This means you have to eat a great deal more vegetable than animal food in order to get enough of these amino acids. A great deal of the vegetable food goes to waste in this process and from the physiological (生理学的) point of view there is not much to be said in favor of life-long vegetarianism. The economic side of the question, though, must be considered. Vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. However, since only a small proportion of the vegetable protein is useful for body-building purposes, a consistent vegetarian, if he is to gain the necessary 70 grams (克) of protein a day, has to consume a greater bulk of food than his digestive organs can comfortably deal with. In fairness, though, it must be pointed out that vegetarians claim they need far less than 70 grams of protein a day.11. A strict vegetarian ________.A. rarely eats animal productsB. sometimes eats eggsC. never eats any animal productsD. never eats protein12.We feel weak when we go without meat and other animalproducts _____.A. because we are reducing our food amountB. because we do not get enough proteinC. because vegetables do not contain proteinD. unless we take plenty of exercise13.Proteins are built up from ________.A. about twenty different foodsB. about twenty different vegetablesC. various fats and sugarsD. about twenty different amino acids14.Physiologically, life-long vegetarianism may not be goodbecause ______.A. it makes people very thinB. the body must process too much wasteC. the farmer loses moneyD. vitamin-deficiency diseases may result15.One thing in favour of vegetarianism is that ________.A. vegetable food is easier to digestB. animal food is less expensiveC. vegetable food is cheaperD. vegetable food contains more amino acids11.C 12.B 13.D 14.B 15.CPart 2 Cloze (with four choices provided)(每小题:1 分)Directions: Read the following passage carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices given for each blank. Questions 1 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.A Roof over Our HeadsMan has three basic needs: food, clothing and shelter. If a man lives in a warm climate, clothing is not absolutely necessary. However, man cannot live without food, and he has little chance of survival without shelter. Man needs shelter to protect himself from the weather, wild animals, insects, and enemies.History of sheltersLong before man learned how to build houses, he looked for natural shelters, as the animals did. He found that he could protect himself by climbing up into trees or by hiding in caves. The first shelters or homes actually built by man were very simple. For his building materials, he used whatever he could find easily around him: rocks, tree branches, dried grasses, and animal skins. It was a long time, however, before man began to build permanent (永久的) shelters because, until man learned to farm, he lived by hunting (狩猎). And, in order to follow game (猎物), he had to be able to move from one hunting ground to another. Thus, the first man-made shelters were those that could be easily transported. The first permanent shelters were probably built twenty or forty thousand years ago by fish-eating people who lived in the places as long as the fish supply lasted. Fish-eaters could stay in one place for several years. However, once man learned to farm, he could live longer in such a place. Thus, he was able to build a permanent home. Once again, he built his home with the materials he found at hand. In Egypt, for example, wood was scarce, so most houses were built of dried mud, with a roof supported by tree trunks. When the Norsemen came from Scandinavia to northern Europe, they found many forests, so they built homes with a framework of heavy tree trunks and then filled the space between the trunks with mud. The Eskimos, on the other hand, lived in a land where there was little or no wood. They learned to adapt their homes perfectly to their surroundings. In the wintertime, when everything was covered with snow and ice, the Eskimos built their homes with blocks of ice. When the warm weather came and the ice turned to water, the Eskimos lived in a tent made of animal skins.Weather and housesThe weather is man's worst natural enemy. He has to protect himself from extremes of heat and cold and from storms, wind and rain. Where the weather is hot and dry, the windows are small and high up, so that the heat stays outside. There is often a flat roof, where people can find a cool place to sleep. In hot, wet areas, on the other hand, people need to be protected from the rain, as well as the heat. In such places, houses are built with wide roofs that hang over the side of their homes.Where there is a lot of rainfall, houses are built with steep (陡峭的) roofs to drain off the rain. People living in the Congo River region have found that steep roofs flow off large rains more quickly. Other people in Africa have found that rain flows quickly off a roof of broad leaves.Building housesIn Borneo, houses are built on high posts to protect people from dampness. And there are tribes in Malaysia that build their homes in the branches of trees, and people climb up to their houses on bamboo ladders. In northern countries, people build houses to protect themselves from cold and snow. Their houses are built of strong materials, and the roofs are steep, so that the snow will fall off. And, in northern Siberia, where snowfall is extremely heavy, the roofs even have a funnel-shaped (漏斗型的) platform to protect the chimneys from drifting snow.Protection from danger has also influenced the type of house man builds. When enemies threatened him, man made his house in places that are difficult to reach. People in the Philippines protect themselves by living high above the ground. When danger threatens, they remove the ladders leading to their homes. People who lived on the cliffs of the American Southwest built their homes high up on the sides of cliffs, where access was very difficult.Nomad tribes (游牧部落) must move from place to place, taking care of flocks of sheep that are always in need of fresh grass. Their houses must be simple and easy to transport. The nomads of central Asia have developed a round house with a hole at the top to let the smoke out.In Europe there are very few wooden houses being built today. This is partly because wood is no longer as plentiful as it once was, and partly because wooden houses burn quite easily. On the other hand, there are many wooden houses in America. This is because the first settlers wanted to build houses quickly and cheaply. Since the country was covered in many places with forests, some trees had to be cut down to make houses.Houses in many cities used to be made of wood. However, since the houses were very close together, fire could easily spread from one house to another. There were records of large fires in some cities, such as the great fire of London in 1666. When the burned-out cities were rebuilt, wood was still used for the roofs, but stones were used for walls. There are so many people living in some cities where it is often very difficult to find a place to live, and if one does find a place it is often too small. And many of the houses are too old and uncomfortable. Just as in man's earliest days, finding a good place to live continues to be one of his biggest concerns.1.Trees and caves served as man's first shelters.A. YB. NC. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: it can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public examination. If teacher and learner roles are distinguishable, how can teaching aid the child in the quest for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.1.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that________.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. too much time is spent in teaching about readingC. students spend endless hours in readingD. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance2.The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.A. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable3.The word "examination" at the end of Paragraph 3 most probably means "________".A. inquiryB. observationC. controlD. suspicion4.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when________.A. children become highly motivatedB. teacher and learner roles are identicalC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. reading enriches children's experience5.The main idea of the passage is that ________.A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD. reading is more complicated than generally believedQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Society usually tends to focus on the negative side of inner-city schools. Many people like to stereotype (模式化) these schools which, while these general statements may be true in some cases, tend to be worse most of the time. People think that the students of these schools receive inferior educations. My school, an inner-city school named St. Ignatius, is regarded as one of the best in the state. People also believe that violence occurs on a daily basis, both in the school itself and in the nearby city. I cannot even remember a serious fight at St. Ignatius. People who think that the teachers at inner-city schools lack love for their job worsen this typical stereotype even further. My teachers not only had a love for teaching, but they were also able to cultivate a love for learning in their students.Take Mrs. Borroni, my Spanish teacher, for example. She would often take time out of her class to tell her students about the numerous activities after class with which we should get involved. She loved her job so much that she stayed after school every day to moderate activities such as "Amnesty International" (an international organization that protects human rights) and the Spanish Club. Her students, including me, joined all of the clubs which she moderated just because she made them so interesting. After reading all of this, most people would argue that St. Ignatius should not be considered a true "inner-city school". While this may hold some truth, I am arguing that my life was greatly enriched simply because of the school's location in the middle of Cleveland, as opposed to a poor suburban area.6.What do people often think negatively about?A. Inner-city schools.B. Stereotypes.C. St. Ignatius.D. Violence.7.What can the author never remember seeing at St. Ignatius?A. Amnesty International.B. A serious fight.C. A Spanish club.D. Inferior students.8.What would Mrs. Borroni do after school?A. Give Spanish classes.B. Tell students about activities.C. Guide students in special groups.D. Help students love learning.9.Why might a reader of this article not view St. Ignatius as a real inner-city school?A. It is not in the middle of the city.B. It is in a poor suburban area.C. It enriched the author's life.D. It might be better than others. How does the author feel about inner-city schools?10.A. The stereotypes about them are not at all true.B. They are not necessarily all bad, as they can be good.C. They are much poorer than those in the suburbs.D. The students there are more enlightened.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. Before going to high school, I had a very simple view of life. I usually did not think about thesubjects of crime, poverty, or homelessness. As far as I knew, these things did not exist. The area around my school forced my eyes open as early as the first day of school. On the long bus ride through the city, I saw homeless dogs walking the streets. I also clearly recall seeing a homeless person picking through a trash can for the first time ever. The poverty of the area around my school made me see how truly lucky I was. I now began to appreciate everything which had been handed to me in life. In the long run, this led me to put a lot more faith in God because of all that He had given me. I started going to religious services more often. This also indirectly led to my involvement in the community around the school. Students' lives become enriched simply by attending an inner-city school. When a person is exposed to city life, many different advantages can be gained. For someone who had lived in the suburbs all his life, such as myself, a new style of living can be experienced. This alone expands one's views of life in general. The religious aspect of my life grew, I was easily able to get involved in community service projects, and I became much more aware of the dangers which exist in the city. Going to school in the city helped me to overcome the simple views I once had, and I am now better prepared to take on the challenges which await me in life. What sort of school does the author go to?11.A. A religious school.B. A high school.C. A community school.D. A school for poor people. What did the author begin to realize after she started attending her school?12.A. The bus ride to her school was long.B. Crime, poverty, and homelessness really existed.C. Homeless people often eat out of the trash.D. Homeless people live with their homeless dogs. Why does the author think she is lucky?13.A. She has a better life than many other people.B. She is a student at a very good school.C. She can learn a lot by studying in the city.D. She is involved in her community.Where does the author live?14.A. In the inner city.B. On the streets.C. In the suburbs.D. At her school. How does the author feel about inner-city schools?15.A. They are very dangerous.B. They are religious.C. They are prepared.D. They are very good in ways.Part 2 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice)(每小题: 1 分; 满分:15 分) (In the case of True/False type of questions, A stands for True and B for False, or A for Y, B for N and C for NG.)小得对学生答案Correct题分错1. 0 D (To be shown in 1 day.)2. 1 A (To be shown in 1 day.)3. 1 B (To be shown in 1 day.)4. 1 A (To be shown in 1 day.)5. 1 C (To be shown in 1 day.)6. 1 A (To be shown in 1 day.)7. 1 B (To be shown in 1 day.)8. 1 C (To be shown in 1 day.)9. 1 D (To be shown in 1 day.)1 B (To be shown in 1 day.)10.1 B (To be shown in 1 day.)11.1 B (To be shown in 1 day.)12.1 A (To be shown in 1 day.)13.0 A (To be shown in 1 day.)14.1 D (To be shown in 1 day.)15.Subtotal: 13Total: 15.5正确率:77.5% => 就此结束考试,返回我的课程返回我的课程。
