Before unfolding this impressive muster roll (花名册),Homer makes a special, public appeal to the Muses to ensure he gets the facts right:Tellmeno w, Muses, w hoha v eyourhomesonOlympus—foryouaregoddesses, ande v er-present, andkno w allthings, and w ehearonlyrumour: nordo w ekno w anything. These lines reflect a central claim of epic poetry—that through the inspiration of the Muses, daughters of Memory, it can preserve the knowledge of people and the events of the past—a formidable power in the non-literate, oral cultures in which the Iliad evolved. The Iliad was composed around 750-700 BC, but its origins lie at least some five centuries earlier, deep in the Mycenaean Bronze Age—the world the Iliad poetically evokes. The Iliad is keenly aware of its role as the keeper of memory, and credibility is central to its storytelling. The epic is a work of fiction, and relates the events of a few weeks in the tenth and final year of the Trojan War fought between Greeks and Trojans over beautiful Helen, the Greek queen who deserted her husband to elope with a Trojan prince. Its cast of characters includes not only warriors and their captives and families, but the immortal Olympian gods, who perform many supernatural acts in the course of their eager participation in the action around Troy. The Iliad has the reputation for being an exclusively (专门地) male epic, weak on female characters, but to choose only one example—Homer's delicate characterization of Helen as a woman driven by reluctant remorseful (悔恨的) passion is as hauntingly (萦绕心头地) credible as any Anna Karenina.Longinus, a scholar in the 1st Century AD wrote that in recording as he does the wounding of the gods, their quarrels, vengeance, tears, imprisonment and all their passions Homer has done his best to make the men in the Iliad gods and gods men. The scene between Achilles and Priam displays this inversion and crystallises what the Iliad poets hadlearned in the course of the epic's Journey. That the gods we worship might not answer, and on occasion humanity must rise to fill their place. That glory is closely associated with painful loss. That the victor shares the humanity of the most vulnerable of the vanquished (战败者); that there is no such thing as pure victory in war.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了荷马史诗《伊利亚特》。

单元综合检测(二)(时间:100分钟;满分:120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AWhat is happiness?Different people have different ideas。
Some people are rich;they think they are happy。
Other people have many friends,so they feel happy.Still others are happy because their lives are meaningful。
Happiness attracts everyone. For children, happiness often suggests eating something good or playing with toys。
For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals。
And for a scientist,a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction。
There was once a beggar who was always happy. The king saw him and wondered why he was so happy though he was so poor. However, the king could have whatever he wanted;yet he himself was not happy at all。
Thus we can see one’s happiness doesn’t depend on whether he is rich or poor.Happiness is a state of mind.As long as one thinks he's content and satisfied,he is happy。

单元综合检测(二)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)AA lot of us lose life's tough battles by starting a frontal(正面的) attack—when a touch of humor might well enable us to win.Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒)about being late on the job.Although there was a good reason for Sam's a being lateserious illness at home-he decided that this bynowfamiliar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35.The place was as quiet as a locker room(更衣室); everyone was hard at work.Sam's supervisor came up to him.Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand.“How do you do!” he said.“I'm Sam Maynard.I'm applying for a job, which,I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago.Does the early bird get the worm?”The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped_off a smile and walked back to his office.Sam Maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh.Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected(忽略),means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”,criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians(喜剧演员) on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance(忍受力) than people in any other forum.【语篇解读】本文通过一个小故事讲述了幽默的重要性。

”A few students hesitated to start。
They waited to see what the rest of the class would do。
Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided。
Another group built something out of their own imaginations。
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time。

turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share.BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says,“The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read.BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops.Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it.E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found.Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real” and not the virtual(虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-five countries.36.Why does the author mention book groups in the first paragraph?A.To explain what they are.B.To introduce BookCrossing.C.To stress the importance of reading.D.To encourage readers to share have cereal, eggs and toast.Others had cakes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess,my supper was different from the other kids'.Butat least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day.Other kids always wore their clothes for days.We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst was yet to come.We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and get up at 7:45 the next morning. So when my friends slept,my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labour Law.She made us work.I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us.Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colours on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks.None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest ing this as a background,I'm now trying to bring up my three children,I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.40.From the passage we can learn that the writer's mother was________.A.not not unique to humans. The superb lyrebird, already known to be a gifted singer, can perform coordinated(协调的)song-and-dance routines(一套舞蹈动作)that put most humans to shame. The superb lyrebird is one of only two lyrebird species living in Australia, the other named Albert's lyrebird.Male lyrebirds have tails in the shape of an ancient musical instrument when spread out.Like most animals with beautiful body parts, the males use their tails to attract females. Each one sets up a small mound(小丘)on the forest floor, where he walks around proudly and sings. He also shows his tail by holding it over his head.Lyrebirds are gifted mimics(模仿者),so their songs combine their own calls, the songs of other species, and sounds they have heard in the forest. That would be enough showing off for other animals, but male superb lyrebirds also dance.Anastasia Dalziell of the Australian National University in Canberra filmed 12 lyrebirds in the wild. She found that males only danced during four song types, and that each song type was accompanied(伴随)by a specific move.“Lyrebirds match different dance styles to different types of songs,”she says. For example, when the male sang a series of rapid notes he also stepped to the side and held his tail wide.Another song type was accompanied by jumping and moving up and down, with the tail held narrow.“Our results suggest that the coordination between song and dance—like movements we see in humans can occur in other animals,”says Dalziell.Female lyrebirds might prefer males that are better at coordinating song and dance, although there is no evidence of that yet.44.Beyoncé Knowles, who can sing while dancing,is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to________.A.put most humans to shameB.introduce the topic of lyrebirdsC.show the author's admiration for herD.share the experience of the famous singer45.Male lyrebirds use their tails to________.A.attract femalesB.protect themselvesC.build up small hillsD.make beautiful sounds46.We can infer from the text that________.A.male lyrebirds good at dancing are more popularB.Albert's lyrebirds can also sing while dancingC.superb lyrebirds can make various soundsD.lyrebirds are fond of showing off47.The author writes the text to________.A.inform readers about lyrebirdsB.instruct readers how to sing and danceC.persuade readers that only men can danceD.encourage readers to learn from Beyoncé KnowlesDOn Felton Place,a street in Madison,Wisconsin, there is a very small library holding about 20 books. Not much bigger than a birdhouse, the little library is of simple construction.A door adds to the charm and to the belief that the books are to be valued and protected. It belongs to retired professor Marshall Cook and his wife Ellen.Within three kilometers of their house, there are a dozen more little libraries.Equipped with books ranging from academic texts to children's classics, music instruction and gardening magazines, these two-by-two-foot little libraries carry the same simple message:Take a book.Leave a book.“We had new books there within the first five hours of having it in our front yard”,said Meghan Blake Horst who built a Little Library on the bike path. The Cooks' library is part of the Little Free Library project to spread tiny libraries and the love of reading around the United States and beyond. The project started in 2009,the idea of Wisconsin men Rick Brooks and Todd Bol,two modern-day Andrew Carnegies. The Wisconsin men want to top Andrew Carnegie(1835—1919),who built and donated 2,509 libraries.“A book shelf where you share books is a great idea,”says Brooks,55,“but these little houses for books meet people's emotional needs for friends and neighbors,a feeling that we are all in a community together.”“The neighborhood starts taking care of it.People come together to talk about literacy, education—community things that we define so well but lack so much,”says Bol,63.The turnover(流通)in a Little Library can be impressive. At a Little Library outside the Indie Coffee shop in Madison, more than 1,000 books have changed hands since November. Most Little Libraries are in public areas, though some are also in front yards.A Little Library costs about $350.They can be ordered or built do-it-yourself from architectural plans. The two men have built about 100,most in the Madison area, but they have had 42,000 inquiries(询问),including some from Canada.“They're in rapid growth all over,”said Blake-Horst.“Someone drew a beautiful wall painting in chalk on our front sidewalk to show gratefulness.”48.What can be the best title for the text?A.Libraries build communitiesB.A library movement starts smallC.Two modern-day Andrew CarnegiesD.The love of reading increases in America49.What can we learn about the books in the Little Libraries?A.They are mainly for children.B.Each library has about 200 books.C.Many of them are donated by readers.D.Readers are not allowed to take them away.50.The Little Free Library project was started by ________.A.Marshall Institute, which is a non-profit organization that conducts research on many public issues. He says that a long summer vacation doesn't make sense in today's world. Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV,playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn't need an education to get a good job.But now things have changed. For today's students, academic skills are important to students' future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don't give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace,Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.Summer vacation also causes challenges for today's families. In the 1960s,more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom.Now two-thirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break.Someone must watch the kids. But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement.Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose significant ground in the summertime.A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boringwork.Rather,it should allow time-pressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons.Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts.Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century,it may also be BWhen I was a small boy, I noticed that though many of the adults around me were wealthy and educated, they were not always happy and this sometimes led them to behave in ways, which I, as a child, thought strange. As a result of that, I decided to try to understand what happiness was and how best to achieve it. It was not surprising, then, that I decided to study psychology. On arrival at the university, I was disappointed to find that academic psychologists were trying to understand human behaviour by studying rats in a lab.I felt that there must be other more useful ways of learning how we think and feel.I decided to build my career on trying to discover what made others happy. I started out by studying creative people such as musicians, artists and athletes because they were people who devoted their lives to doing what they wanted to do, rather than things that just brought them financial rewards.Later, I expanded the study by inventing a system calle d “the experience sampling method”. Ordinary people were asked to keep an electronic pager (传呼机) for a week which gave out a beeping sound eight times a day. Every time it did so, they wrote down where they were, what they were doing, how they felt and how much they were concentrating. This system has now been used on more than 10,000 people, and the answers are consistent: as with creative people, ordinary people are happiest when concentrating hard.I found that the most obvious cause of happiness is intense concentration. This must be the main reason why activities such as music, art, literature, sports and other forms of leisure have survived. In order to concentrate, whether you're reading a poem or building a sandcastle, what you need is a challenge that matches your ability. The way to remain continually happy, therefore, is to keep finding new opportunities to improve your skills. This may mean learning to do your job better or faster, or doing other more difficult jobs. As you grow older, you have to find new challenges which are more appropriate to your age.语篇解读:本文是记叙文。
