6.46dm2(13-3+13)×4÷2=46(dm2)。

During one of my lessons he asked how much practicing I was doing. I said three or four hours a day.“Do you practice in long stretches, an hour 21 ?”“I try to.”“Well, don’t,” he said loudly. “When you grow up, 22 won’t come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, 23 household tasks. 24 the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life.”When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to 25 , but class periods, theme-reading, and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my 26 was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next 27 I conducted an experiment. Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my 28 , at the end of the week I had a rather large manuscript ready for revision, later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal method. 29 my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, in every day there were idle moments which could be caught and put to use. I 30 took up piano-playing again, finding that the small 31 of the day provided sufficient time for both writing and piano practice.There is an important 32 in this time — you must get into your work quickly. If you have but fi ve minutes for writing, you can’t afford to waste four 33 your pencil. Those stripes (条纹) may be most useful as protection from biting flies, a recent study concludes.Biologists studied zebras and other closely related African animals. They tested five popular ideas about how the stripes might function. No evidence emerged to support most of these notions, Tim Caro told Science News. A wildlife biologist, he works at the University of California, Davis.①.Some scientists had proposed those stripes help zebras hide from predators (食肉动物), such as lions, or confuse them. Still others suggested that those stripes might offer some cooling or help the animals in forming social groups.②. Instead, the stripes appear to help the animals avoid the bite of bloodthirsty flies. This finding supports some studies had found signs that flies prefer solids to stripes when hunting for a landing place.③ .To test all of the theories, Caro's group used geographic information. They looked at where in Africa the 20 different types of animals belonging to the genus Equus lived. Some of these equines (马科动物) have stripes, including zebras and asses (驴) with striped legs. Others are stripe-free. These include other asses and wild horses.The scientists found no connection between stripes and whether the animals lived in woodsy(树林多的)areas. That suggests stripes don’t camouflage(伪装)zebras in those places.The scientists also saw no link between where striped animals lived and where lions hunted. In ether st udies, researchers found that lions ate plenty of zebras. The new observations suggest stripes don't confuse the predators.The experts also looked for-and found-no evidence that stripes cool the zebras or help them recognize each another when forming social groups.④.Striped animals often live in places where the environment is just right much of the year for biting flies to flourish. In those areas, horseflies, tsetse flies(舌蝇)and other biting flies spread fatal diseases to zebras and horses. That connection now suggests stripes may help zebras reduce the number of bites-and the infections they can spread.The study doesn't answer how the zebra got its stripes in the first place, Caro admits. Science may never know. Inns Cuthill is a biologist at England's University of Bristol. He finds the new study “compelling(令人信服的)”,Until now, Cuthill's favorite hypothesis had been that zebra stripes confused predators. It's too soon to say the mystery of the zebra's stripes has been solved, he notes. But he says that keeping flies away is now probably “the leading contender.”41. According to the recent study, the stripes in zebras may be used toA. offer some cooling when it is hotB. help them hide from or confuse predatorsC. protect themselves from being bitter, by fliesD. help them in forming social groups42. Flies prefer solids to stripes when seeking a landing placeC. Cuthill now tends to believe the new theoryD. The mystery of the zebra's stripes will be solved soon44. When Lear wants to speak to her, Goneril tells her servant,Oswald, to say she is sick. She encourages her staff to be disrespectful towardsLear and begins complaining about the hundred soldiers Lear has brought withhim. However, King Lear soon has a friend by his side. The Duke of Kent, whoLear ordered to leave Britain, cannot abandon his king. He therefore comes toLear disguised as a servant called Caius and asks for a job.(Enter Lear, several of Lear's soldiers and Kent disguised as a servant.) LEAR: OK, Caius. I'll give you a trial. And if you prove to be good at your job, I'll keep you on as my servant. (Oswald enters.) Hey, you there. Where's my daughter?(Oswald ignores the king and hurries out of the room.) Hey. What's going on?Call him back. Is he deaf? (A Soldier rushes out after Oswald.) It's as though thewhole world has gone to sleep. (Soldier reenters.) Where's that servant? Whydidn’t he come back when I called?SOLDIER: Sir, he answered me very rudely and said he would not come back.LEAR: I don’t believe it!SOLDIER: Sir, I am sorry, to tell you this, but it seems to me that you are not being treated with the respect due to a king. Everyone here, including your daughter, isbehaving very coldly towards you.LEAR: Mmm. Now get up and get out of here. (Oswald leaves.) LEAR: My thanks, Caius. I can see you will be a most valuable servant.(Enter Goneril.) What's up, daughter? You always seem to be frowning lately. I thought when I told you about their behaviour you would make thembehave, but now I hear you have insulted Oswald. I won't stay here to be insulted. I still have one more daughter. She'll scratch out youreyes when she hears how you've treated me. Men! Get my horses ready andcollect my baggage. The study, published in the British Ecological Society's journal Functional Ecology, is the first to show that human-made noise affects natural insect populations. Animals use sound to communicate formany reasons, including marking out territory, warning of predators and finding mates, and although previous research shows birds, whales and even frogs change their calls in noisy environments, the impact of human-made noise on insects has been neglected until now. Ulrike Lampe and colleagues from the University of Bielefeld in Germany caught 188 male bow-winged grasshoppers, half from quiet locations and half from beside busy roads. The grasshoppers use their song to attract mates.The team then studied the differences in the two groups' songs in the laboratory. To encourage them to sing they exposed the males to a female grasshopper, and then recorded their courtship songs. Analysis of almost 1,000 recordings revealed grasshoppers living beside noisy roads produced different songs to those living in quieter locations.According to Lampe: "Bow-winged grasshoppers produce songs that include low and high frequency components. We found that grasshoppers from noisy habitats increase the volume of the lower-frequency part of their song, which makes sense since road noise can mask signals in this part of the frequency spectrum(频谱)."The team's findings are important because traffic noise could be upsetting the grasshopper's mating system(交配系统). "Increased noise levels could affect grasshopper courtship in several ways. It could prevent females from hearing male courtship songs properly, prevent females from recognizing males of their own species, or impair females' ability to estimate how attractive a male is from his song," Lampe explains.Having discovered that human-made noise affects insect communication, the researchers now want to learn more about how the mechanism works, and whether the grasshoppers adapt to noise during their development as larvae(幼虫), or whether males from noisy habitats produce different songs due to genetic The bow-winged grasshopper is a common species in Central Europe. Adults occur mainly between July and September, preferring dry grasslands. Around 1.5 cm long, they vary in colour from green and browns to red and purple. The male's song consists of 2 second-long phrases that increase in amplitude (振幅) towards the end. The beginning of a phrase is characterized by slower ticking sounds that increase in speed and amplitude, leading to a buzzing sound towards the end of the phrase. A courtship song usually includes 2 phrases.49. He stopped by the fence in front of the house where he lived with his aunt Polly. He looked at it, and all joy left him. The fence was long and high. He put the brush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated the operation. He felt he could not continue and sat down.He knew that his friends would arrive soon with all kinds of interesting plans for the day. They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his having to work on a beautiful summer Saturday. The thought burned him like fire.He put his hand into his pockets and took out all that he owned. Perhaps he could find some ways to pay someone to do the whitewashing for him. But there was nothing of value in his pockets—nothing that could buy even half an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back into his pockets and gave up the idea.At this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderful idea came to him. It filled his mind with a great, bright light. Calmly he picked up the brush and started again to whitewash.While Tom was working, Ben Rogers appeared. Ben was eating an apple as he walked along the street. As he walked along it, he was making noises like the sound of a riverboat. First he shouted loudly, like a boat captain. Then he said “Ding-Dong-Dong”,“Ding-Dong-Dong” again and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to Tom, he stopped.Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look at Ben. Ben stared a moment and then said: “Hello! I'm going swimming, but you can't go, can you?”No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom's mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.Ben said, “Hello, old fe llow, you've got to work, hey?”Tom turned suddenly and said, “Why, it's you, Ben! I wasn't noticing.”“Say—I'm going swimming. Don't you wish you could? But of course you'd rather work—wouldn't you? Of course you would.”Tom looked at the boy a bit, and said, “What do you call work?”“Why, isn't that work?”Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answered carelessly. “Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. All I know is, it suits Tom Sawyer.”“Oh come, now, you don't mean to say tha t you like it?”The brush continued to move.“Like it? Well, I don't see why I shouldn't like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom moved his brush back and forth, stepped back to look at the result, added a touch here and there, and stepped back again. Ben watched every move and got more and more interested. Soon he said,“Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”Tom thought for a moment, and was about to agree, but he changed his mind.“No—no—it won't do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. It has got to be done very carefully. I don't think there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it well enough.”“No—is that so? Oh come, now—let me jus t try. Only just a little.”“Ben, I'd like to, but if it isn't done right, I'm afraid Aunt Polly … ”“Oh, I'll be careful. Now let me try. Say—I'll give you the core of my apple.”“Well, here—No, Ben, now don't. I'm afraid …”“I'll give you all of it.”Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness on his face, but joy in his heart. And while Ben worked at the fence in the hot sun, Tom sat under a tree, eating the apple, and planning how to get more help. There were enough boys. Each one came to laugh, but remained to whitewash. By the time Ben was tired, Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite; and when Billy was tired, Johnny bought it for a dead rat—and so on, hour after hour. And when the middle of the afternoon came, Tom had won many treasures.And he had not worked. He had had a nice idle time all the time, with plenty of company, and the fence had been whitewashed three times. If he hadn't run out of whitewash, Tom would have owned everything belonging to his friends.He had discovered a great law of human action, namely, that in order to make a man or a boy want a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to get.53. This can also be stated in simpler terms as a child who is not doing what adults want him to do at a particular time. Children with this disorder often seem to be behaving in different and socially unacceptable ways.Like learning disabilities, behavior disorders are hard to diagnose. There are no physical symptoms in the body that are observable or measurable. Behavior disorders are therefore identified by observing behavior patterns in the child over a period of time. If a child displays some of the following behaviors, he may be labeled with a behavior disorder:◆ Aggression and cruelty to people and animals.◆ Destruction of property — defacing or damaging things.◆ Little sympathy and concern for others.◆ Takes no responsibility for behavior. Also lies, cheats and steals easily.◆ Disregards rules and regulations.In addition to these general symptoms of a behavior disorder, there are other symptoms characteristic of more specific behavior disorders such as ADHD —this is the inattentive, can’t-sit-still behavior. The attention can’t last long and the behavior is impulsive at times. The child also seems quite distracted and forgetful.Behavior disorders come from brain injury, child abuse, and shock, etc. There have also been indications that it could be a genetic disorder. The behavior therefore is an involuntary response to these experiences and the child should not be blamed for his behavior. Since the child has problems controlling his behavior, it stands to reason that his performance in school will be affected. A child with a behavior disorder will feel bad about himself and that low self-esteem will be further worsened by the adults around him who do not treat his condition with understanding and willingness to help.Behavior disorders are best dealt with by behavior and psychological treatments. But, as with learning disabilities, accurate diagnosis is important and this must be over a length of time. It is also important in trying to modify the behavior to be clear about what is the behavior you are expecting. Make sure it is a rational expectation. For example, expecting a three-year-old to sit quietly through a long church service may not be reasonable, or demanding that a six-year-old does extra home work after a long day of school and extra curricular activities may be stretching the child’s concentration and attention too far. Since some behavior disorders result from shocking and upsetting life experiences or brain injury, treatments should include helping the child to resolve and heal emotionally from the experience. The behavior could be corrected through emotional healing. In other words, when a human being is emotionally healthy, that is, can be aware of his intelligence and enthusiasm for life and his loving connectedness to other human beings, he automatically “behaves” rationally.59. ___________ 60. ___________ 61. ___________ 62. __________ 63. ___________ 64. ___________ 65. ___________ 66. ___________ 67. __________ 68. ___________ 基础知识(14分)1.My husband _________________ a model plane the whole Sunday morning.
