How to Determine the Topic
◆ Ask yourself “Who or what is the passage about?” ◆ Look carefully at the title. Often the general topic is one of
the words in the title. ◆ Look for clue words or phrases that are used repeatedly.
The first three sentences give details to explain why it was the best year in the company’s history. The main idea is stated in the last sentence.
