CVPR08 Learning realistic human actions from movies

Learning realistic human actions from moviesIvan Laptev Marcin Marszałek Cordelia SchmidBenjamin Rozenfeld INRIA Rennes,IRISAINRIA Grenoble,LEAR -LJKBar-Ilan Universityptev@inria.frmarcin.marszalek@inria.frcordelia.schmid@inria.frgrurgrur@AbstractThe aim of this paper is to address recognition of natural human actions in diverse and realistic video settings. This challenging but important subject has mostly been ignored in the past due to several problems one of which is the lack of realistic and annotated video datasets. Our first contri-bution is to address this limitation and to investigate the use of movie scripts for automatic annotation of human ac-tions in videos. We evaluate alternative methods for action retrieval from scripts and show benefits of a text-based clas-sifiing the retrieved action samples for visual learn-ing,we next turn to the problem of action classification in video. We present a new method for video classification that builds upon and extends several recent ideas including local space-time features,space-time pyramids and multi-channel non-linear SVMs.The method is shown to improve state-of-the-art results on the standard KTH action dataset by achieving 91.8%accuracy.Given the inherent problem of noisy labels in automatic annotation,we particularly in-vestigate and show high tolerance of our method to annota-tion errors in the training set.We finally apply the method to learning and classifying challenging action classes in movies and show promising results.1.IntroductionIn the last decade the field of visual recognition had an outstanding evolution from classifying instances of toy ob-jects towards recognizing the classes of objects and scenes in natural images.Much of this progress has been sparked by the creation of realistic image datasets as well as by the new, robust methods for image description and classifica-tion.We take inspiration from this progress and aim to transfer previous experience to the domain of video recog-nition and the recognition of human actions in particular.Existing datasets for human action recognition (e.g.[15],see figure 8)provide samples for only a few action classes recorded in controlled and simplified settings. This stands in sharp contrast with the demands of real applications fo-cused on natural video with human actions subjected to in-Figure 1.Realistic samples for three classes of human actions:kissing;answering a phone;getting out of a car.All samples have been automatically retrieved from script-aligned movies.dividual variations of people in expression, posture, motion and clothing;perspective effects and camera motions;illu-mination variations;occlusions and variation in scene sur-roundings.In this paper we address limitations of current datasets and collect realistic video samples with human ac-tions as illustrated in figure 1.In particular,we consider the difficulty of manual video annotation and present a method for automatic annotation of human actions in movies based on script alignment and text classification (see section 2).Action recognition from video shares common problems with object recognition in static images. Both tasks have to deal with significant intra-class variations, background clutter and occlusions. In the context of object recogni-tion in static images, these problems are surprisingly well handled by a bag-of-features representation [17]combined with state-of-the-art machine learning techniques like Sup-port Vector Machines. It remains, however,an open ques-tion whether and how these results generalize to the recog-nition of realistic human actions,e.g.,in feature films or personal videos.978-1-4244-2243-2/08/$25.00 ©2008 annotation. Our method for action classification extends recent successful image recognition methods to the spatio-temporal domain and achieves best up to date recognition performance on a standard benchmark [15].Furthermore,it demonstrates high tolerance to noisy labels in the training set and, therefore,is appropriate for action learning in au-tomatic settings. We demonstrate promising recognition re-sults for eight difficult and realistic action classes in movies.Future work includes improving the script-to-video alignment and extending the video collection to a much larger dataset. We also plan to improve the robustness of our classifier to noisy training labels based on an iterative learn-ing approach.Furthermore,we plan to experiment with a larger variety of space-time low-level features. In the long term we plan to move away from bag-of-features based rep-resentations by introducing detector style action classifiers.Acknowledgments.M.Marszałek is supported by the 2008英语一作文

2008英语一作文With the advent of the Internet, the landscape of education has been revolutionized. The year 2008 marked a significant milestone in the integration of the Internet into educational systems worldwide. This essay will explore the various ways in which the Internet has impacted education, focusing on its advantages and challenges.Firstly, the Internet has provided access to a wealth of information that was previously unavailable to many students. Online resources such as e-books, academic journals, and educational websites have become an integral part of the learning process. This has not only enriched the curriculum but also allowed students to conduct research and learn at their own pace.Secondly, the Internet has facilitated communication between students and educators. Email, discussion forums, and instant messaging have made it easier for students to ask questions, seek clarification, and receive feedback. This has fostered a more interactive and collaborative learning environment, where students can engage with their peers and teachers beyond the confines of the classroom. Moreover, the Internet has enabled the rise of online learning platforms and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These platforms offer courses on a wide range of subjects, making higher education more accessible to people who may nothave the means or opportunity to attend traditional institutions. This democratization of education has the potential to bridge educational gaps and promote lifelong learning. However, the Internet also presents challenges to the educational system. One major concern is the issue of information overload. With so much content available online, it can be difficult for students to discern reliable sources from unreliable ones. This requires a new set of skills, such as critical thinking and information literacy, which must be taught alongside traditional academic subjects.Additionally, the digital divide remains a significantbarrier to the widespread adoption of Internet-based education. Not all students have equal access to technology and the Internet, which can exacerbate existing inequalities in education. Efforts must be made to ensure that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, can benefit from the opportunities provided by the Internet. In conclusion, the Internet has had a profound impact on education since 2008. It has opened up new avenues for learning, communication, and access to education. However, it also presents challenges that must be addressed to ensurethat the benefits of online education are available to all. As we continue to integrate the Internet into our educational systems, it is crucial to navigate these challenges responsibly and thoughtfully.。

Action Learning Set:The Learning OrganisationFacilitated by John Gray, FrameworkStaring January 2008Introduction How do organisations and individuals learn? How can organisations make the best of their experience? How, indeed, can they even begin to make meaning out of what is happening to them (both internally and in the world), and to translate that understanding into service development? And what are the steps to creating a culture of learning and reflection? This action learning set will create a space for practitioners to explore themselves and their organisation or clients in relation to learning. Framework is a network of organisational consultants, established in 1985 and dedicated to working with the not-for-profit sector. Its members have recently conducted an internal Organisational Learning Review as a means of informing improving itself as a learning collective. The Action Learning Set Facilitators of action learning sets facilitator , if only to …hold‟ the process of learning and to provide guidance on resources and learning opportunities.John Gray is strongly influenced by Whole Person Learning, a theory of learning which places the learner at the heart of the learning endeavour. In this model, participants are responsible for not just their own learning, but also for collectively negotiating and agreeing the content, design, style and programme of learning. In whole person learning communities, the learning about the self-as-instrument can be the most powerful outcome, not least in the capacity it generates for them to work more as whole persons within their sphere of expertise. There are similarities between action learning sets, communities of practice, and Whole Person Learning communities. Perhaps the main difference inWhole Person Learning is the readiness of participants to seek and explorelearning from the experience of working together in the context of thegroup‟s external theme.Adapting some phrases wri tten by Bryce Taylor: “Whole Person Learning assumes the learner has both the means and the right to construct the learning that they require to make fulfilling choices both for themselves and for the world in which they play their part. They are a maker of meaning and an author of their experience, in company with others.” 1Several aspects of Whole Person Learning will feature in this Action Learning Set.Everyone will be encouraged to bring both personal and organisational priorities for their participation within the set, together with the commitment to create a peer learning community which will meet the learning needs of its participants. As the facilitator, John will bring attention to supporting the creation of the peer learning community, and will focus the group‟s attention on the process of the group where this will boost the collaborative learning experience. The promise of a peer learning community is the learning that can be gained both by individuals during and outside the timetabled sessions, and from the experience of the group working together. The latter in particular has the potential to hone skills of collaboration, inquiry, and self-reflection – all essential to supporting learning in oneself and in others.Organisational LearningThe theme of the Set is Organisational Learning (OL). OL is a highly-developed field within international development NGO‟s, and funding is often tied to an agency‟s ability to demonstrate it has the tools to generate learning from the work in hand. Many of these organisations have staff and policies dedicated to helping the organisation capture, analyse and use the learning from work in the field and internally. There is a lengthy pedigree of inquiry into OL. Names often linked with its early development are Peter Senge, and Donald Schon and Chris Argyris (see reading list at the end of this paper). There is a burgeoning literature on the subject, including in international NGO‟s and in commercial and public organisations.OL is a comparatively new concept to some UK voluntary and statutory organisations. Many staff in these sectors know the value of monitoring and evaluation, and are aware that culture and leadership can be more or less conducive to learning. But few will have learning strategies in place, and1 See Learning for Tomorrow, Bryce Taylor, Oasis Press, 2007fewer still will have staff dedicated to knowledge management or facilitating learning. This Set will provide exposure to theories about OL and improving an organisation‟s capacity to learn. Participants will be able to apply those theories to their own organisation, and to explore ways in which learning can be encouraged. The Whole Person Learning aspects of the Set will help participants carry their learning about learning back into their own organisation or into the organisations or individuals they work with. Background readingOrganisational Learning:∙P.
