Module 6 Animals in dangerA dead polar bear found on the Arctic island has shocked experts whosay climate change may be to blame for the animal's death. The starvedpolar bear in Norway was said to be in good health in April when theNorwegian Polar Institute examined and tagged it. However, the animalwas reduced to skin and bones by the time a group of explorers happenedto find his body in July.“From his lying position in death the bear appears to simply havestarved and died where he dropped,” polar bear expert Dr. Ian Stirlingtold The Guardian. “He had no any remaining fat, having been reducedto little more than skin and bones.”Stirling believes the bear starved to death as a result of a lack ofsea ice, which the animals use as a platform for hunting seals. Thatmay also explain why the 16year old male bear was found about 155miles north of where it was seen in April.Arctic sea ice reached a record low in 2012, according to a reportreleased this week by the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration, which pointed to continued signs of climate change.[阅读障碍词]be to blame应受责备tag vt. Match the word with its meaning.1.endanger A.保护区;保护圈2.reserve B.灭绝的;绝种的3.struggle C.值…… 1~5 FAIDC 6~10 EHJBGⅡ.Write down the meaning of phrases in each sentence.1.All roads are blocked by the heavy snow, so the passengers are in danger. 2.Thanks to your help, we finished the task ahead of schedule. 3.This figure increases to 72 percent during summer vacation.增加到4.Prices vary according to the quantity ordered.按照5.He was hit by a truck and died on the spot.当场6.Short hair and short skirts came into fashion at about the same time. Module 6 Animals in Danger

入舵市安恙阳光实验学校Module 6Animals in Danger维A 阅读理解(2012·浙江,A)Easter(复活节) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no,not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer—it lives on the islands!—but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0. 9meter rise would wipe out their habitat(栖息地)completely. The snowshoe hare,on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators(捕食者).As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators.Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 78 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate(迁移)to higher groundbut they already occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up.The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle.Scientists are concerned about their populations.Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development.Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs.Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.1.The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to________.A.show the importance of Easter DayB.introduce the issue about bunniesC.remind people of Easter traditionsD.discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies2.The word “culprit” (Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to________.A.criminal B.judgeC.victim D.producer3.According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators because they________.A.are exposed to more skillful huntersB.have moved to habitats with fewer plantsC.haven't adapted themselves to climate changeD.can't change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring4.The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that________.A.both are affected by less snowB.both are affected by rising sea levelsC.neither can find enough foodD.neither can migrate to higher places5.Which best describes the writer's tone in the passage?A.Approving. Module 6 Animals in Danger Section Ⅲ Grammar-复习定语从句语法图解探究发现①On a freezing cold day in January 1994, Jiesang Suonandajie found what he was looking for —a group of poachers who were killing the endangered Tibetan antelope.②In the battle which followed Jiesang was shot and killed.③Often working at night, the poachers shoot whole herds of antelopes at a time, leaving only the babies, whose wool is not worth so much.④The animals are skinned on the spot and the wool taken to India, where it is made into the shawls.⑤In the 1990s the Chinese government began to take an active part in protecting the antelopes in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve — the huge national park on the QinghaiTibetan Plateau, which is the main habitat of the antelopes.⑥Sometimes ther e were gunfights, like the one in which Jiesang Suonandajie was killed.⑦The small group of officials who work in the reserve are helped by volunteers who come from all over the country, and who are ready for the difficult conditions of life at 5,000 metres.⑧Meanwhile, in those countries where the shawls are sold, police are getting tough with the dealers.[我的发现](1)以上各句中黑体部分在定语从句中分别担当什么成分?③句中作定语;①②⑤⑦句中作主语;④⑥⑧句中作地点状语。

(2)哪些句子中的which可用that替代?②句中的which可用that替代。

There are occasions when (=on which) one has to yield.

This is the place where (=at which) Jack parks his car.

The building which/that stands near the train station is a supermarket.

The person whom you met yesterday is an honest man.

Such books as you borrowed are of great use.

Tell me everything that you know.

I bought a great many books, on which I spent all my money that I saved.

[即时演练1](1)用适当的关系词填空①Those people who/whom/that the boss interviewed are applicants for the job.②A company whose profits from home markets are declining may seek opportunities abroad.③I don't become a serious climber until the fifth grade, when I went up to rescuea kite that was stuck in the branches of a tree.④Can you show me a case where this phrase is often misused by Chinese students, Mr. Brown?⑤October 1, 1949 is the day that/which we'll never forget.⑥The reason why he was fired was not known to us.(2)用which或that填空①He is the very person that I want to talk to.②They were talking about person s and things that they remembered.③They have invited me to visit their country, which is very kind of them.

This is the pencil with which I draw pictures.

We will never forget the day on which the earthquake happened in Wenchuan.

He is the model from whom we should learn.

Look at the building over which is flying a red flag. It's where I work.

3.“介词+关系代词”前可有名词、数词或some, any, none, both, all, neither, most, each, one, few等代词,构成“名词/代词/数词等+介词+关系代词”结构。

Here are the questions, some of which I thought difficult for you.

[即时演练2](1)用适当的介词填空①Air, without which man can't live, is really important.②The witness to whom the policemen referred was killed.③I don't know the reason for which he was late for school.(2)用“介词+关系代词”完成下列句子①Trading le ather shoes is the business to_which_the_Greens_are_devoted (格林一家所致力于的).(devote)②He had a lot of friends, none_of_whom_would_offer_help (没有人会提供帮助) to him when he was in trouble.(offer)③There are two buildings there, the_larger_of_which_stands_nearly (较大的那栋大约有) a hundred feet tall.

He is the man who came to see you yesterday.

The concert was put off, which disappointed us.

并列句一般由and, but, so等词连接。

He paid the boy D|S10 for washing the windows, most of which hadn't been cleaned for at least a year.(非限制性定语从句)He paid the boy D|S10 for washing the windows, and most of them hadn't been cleaned for at least a year.(并列句)那个男孩擦了窗户,他付给那个男孩10美元。
