Are organically grown foods the best food choices
研究生英语作文-中南大学版本
1.How to win loveThe youth frequently ask how to win love. In my opinion, before planning to win love, you have to understand exactly the meaning of true love. It is impossible to gain some thing whose meaning you don’t know. So, what is the authentic lov e?The most centre meaning of love is to tolerate imperfection. As we all know, there is no perfect thing in the world, hence, nobody is perfect but God. You must be aware of the many sides of the other person, including his/her limitation, inconsistencies and flaws. In a love relationship there exist times of boredom, real strain etc., besides happiness. Someone says that love comes into an imperfect world to make it livable. Therefore, to know the person from whom you are going to win love is the first step. Then, enduring rough times when you feel like giving up and experiencing an impasse.Additionally, love is independence -not excessive dependence on the person for your meaning and survival. Love is freeing, so, please give more space for you and the person you love to develop.Simply put, you will win love, if you completely understand Fromm’s words: Mature love is union under the condition of preserving one’s integrity, one’s individuality. In love this paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.2.The Fourth Millennium in My EyesTechnology has shrunk the globe and stretched our lives and our minds, and, this situation will continue as long as human society exists. What will the fourth millennium look like?In my eyes, a thousand years later, there will be great changes in many areas. But, the future will not be utterly foreign, because human nature will not change. Taking education, new electronic equipments and new modes of education will be popularized, such as on line schools. All the revolution, however, will not make the schoolroom obsolete, for the interactions among students and teachers are essential to the students’ forming characters. As for computer, it will be used in all kinds of fields to serve us—not control. Blooming virtual society, for instance e-community, will increase communicating convenience and ways of entertainment. Yet, virtual reality will never make us permanent antisocial shut-ins. Because, being social species, humans have instincts to communicate by face-to-face contact. All in all, People in the world of 3000, I think, will live in the world in which technology will enrich rather than dominate human lives.3.The Organic FoodsAre organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. The organic foods are purely natural products without using chemical agent, such as chemical fertilizer or pesticide, during the growing process. Many people believe that such foods are safer and more nutritious than the foods produced on a large scale by traditional methods. That may be right, for the natural nutrients are not destroyed in their growth cycles. Nonetheless, it is pity that there is no scientific evidence to support it. On the contrary, I know that some natural products, for instance some bee products, which are poisonous in themselves, have to be processed for diet. The key forming the view, I think, is that the organic foods are more delicious and tasteful. Comparatively speaking, the organic foods are too costly and inefficient, for their long growing time and inadaptability to mass production, to meet needs of population growth. To sum up the above arguments, the organic foods are not the best food choices, but they can serve as a complementary to others.4.Young People without an EducationAs we all know, education, of young people especially, plays an important role in human development. Some say that the issue of youth education has to do with the survival of a nation. According to relative statistic data, there is still a relatively large group of young people who do not complete a youth education. Why?One of the main causes of the social problem has something to do with family background. Poverty plays some part in it. But experts in youth education claimed that parental influence greatly affects children’s attitude of learning. Parents fail to offer parental guidance for different reasons: Some are busy with their own work and neglect their children; some are not aware of the importance of education--they don’t view youth education as the preparation for the youth to become potential leaders, etc. Furthermore, the forms of education on offer cause partly the problem. So far, in china, the education is mostly examination-oriented, which leads to teachers’ blind cramming. Some children are sick of this form of education and give up learning. To conclude, about the issue young people without an education, I quote experts’ saying that there are no problem children, only problem guardians.5.Individualism vs. collectivismIndividualism and collectivism are quite different in some aspects. Are they conflicting?Generally speaking, individualism is formed in the western societies, and collectivism in the eastern societies. In the west, the focus is on the individual, in the east, the focus is on the relationship between individuals. The western value evolves from Hunting Societies, in which the accent was autonomy and individualism. The eastern value comes from Planting Societies- from which comes the notion of interrelation, interconnection and interdependence- in which suppression of individual impulses is required. From these different values evolved very different ways of doing business, and different ways of conducting ourselves within our society. To the extent, individualism and collectivism seem to be conflicting. With economic development, neither individualism nor collectivism can meet the demands of the global community alone. Pushed to the extreme, individualism has created tremendous indifference and cynicism, and, collectivism has caused patronage. One man’s meat is another man’s poison, so, they are complementary. I believe combining them is the best policy in the new economic environment.6.Which one is Gold, Silence or speech?Conversation is one of the major means of communication. But an old saying goes: ’Silence is gold, and speech is silver.’ Do you think this idea is as applicable today as it was in the old days? Write an essay to state your opinions.Which one is Gold, silence or speech? There is an old saying: silence is gold, and speech is silver. That is to say, silence is more important than speech. I don’t think so. Because both speech and silence have their own advantages.Silence has many advantages, for instance, it gives you more chances to listen others’ words so that you can get more useful information and knowledge, and, it can avoid unwanted arguments. Compared with speech, silence may protect yourself, because, the more you speak, the more mistakes you make, the more you betray yourself. It seems that silence means everything. But, sometimes, keeping silence makes you misunderstood by others. They may think that you have nothing in your mind, or that you are reluctant to be involved in the talk.Similarly, speech also has many advantages. In a group interview, speech allows you to assertively show your talent to grasp the opportunity. Speech is a power to persuade others to follow your ideas, when you prepare for implementing your new plan in your company. Also, speech breaks the ice among the strangers, to liven up the party. But, in some circumstances, speech makes you have no chance to be a good listener, hence it may be hard for you to establish a good relationship with others. To sum up, which one is Gold? It depends.7.Two Sides to China’s WTO MembershipThere is an old saying that every coin has two sides, so it is with China’s WTO Membership.Pessimist argued that putting them in a battleground, WTO membership would destroy money-losing state-owned enterprise and shatter China’s banks at a time of high unemployment, hence domestic economy would be attacked fiercely. Yet, experts in management claimed that threat implies opportunity. At the broadest level, while increased competition from foreign companies would undoubtedly cause economic pain, they could also prompt much needed corporate reform—becoming more proactive in developing new products, improving services and bringing down costs. For example, co nfronting competition from Japanese, China’s consumer-appliance makers have been pushing Japanese firms from domestic market. And, much the same phenomenon is at work in the computer industry. An economist says that if China enters the WTO, Falling trade barriers would also provide domestic companies with better access to technology, efficient machines and markets. And that would make the companies better positioned to export. The textile industry would benefit tremendously from the removal of quotas by western governments. Furthermore, besides Chinese exports, thanks to lower import tariffs, companies that import components and raw material would extremely benefit from WTO membership. Additionally, to consumers, it would mean better quality products with lower price and more goods choices. So, WTO membership would initially be painful for the Chinese economy, however, in the longer term, the economy as a whole would benefit if Chinese companies turn the new pressure from growing competition into impetus. All in a word, the advantages outweigh the disadvantage for WTO membership.。

科普知识与现代科技一、阅读理解1 You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬) built into a street lamp,” he said. The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand Sensors(传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed(安装) at 2 metres off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.1.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?A.To predict a heavy rain.B.To check the weather forecast.C.To protect people from the rain.D.To remind people to take an umbrella.2.What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?A.His creation was inspired by an experience.B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.3.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?A.motor→canopy→sensorsB.sensors→motor→canopyC.motor→sensors→can opyD.canopy→motors→sensors4.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?A.Its moving speed.B.Its appearance.C.Its installation.D.Its safety.5.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.D.The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.2 Scientists around the world have been studying the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean known as El Nino (厄尔尼诺). The appearance of El Nino is known to affect the weather around the world. Scientists still do not completely understand it. Yet they now find they can use it to tell about the future in different areas of the world. One example is the work of two scientists at Columbia University in New York, Mark Cane and Gordon Eshel. A scientist of Zimbabwe(津巴布韦), Roger Buckland worked with them. They have found that when El Nino appears, Zimbabwe has little or no rain. This means corn crops in Zimbabwe are poor. The last El Nino was in 1991 to 1993. That was when southeastern Africa suffered a serious lack of rain. The scientists wrote about their recent work in the publication(出版物)Nature. Their computer program can tell when an El Nino will develop up to a year before it does. They suggest that this could provide an effective early warning system for southern Africa, and could prevent many people from starving.1.El Nino is known as ___.A.the changing of the weather in southern AfricaB.the warming of waters in the Pacific OceanC.the weather which brings drought(旱灾)to AfricaD.the weather phenomenon(现象)that brings heavy rains to Africa2.Scientists study El Nino in order that ___.A.they can provide a kind of early warning to the place that will suffer from droughtB.they can tell why Zimbabwe has little or no rainC.they can do some research work in this field.D.they can put all this information into their computers.3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Scientists come to understand how El Nino appears.B.Three scientists from the USA work on this subject.C.Southern Africa suffered a serious drought and many people died from hunger.D.El Nino has something to do with Zimbabwe’s poor crops.4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?A.The computer is used in this research work.B.Scientists know when an El Nino appears by means of the computer program.C.The scientists published their results of the research work.D.Nature is the name of the article written recently by the scientists.5.What’s the best title for this passage?A.Appearance of El Nino is Predictable(可预测的)B.Drought in ZimbabweC.Early Warning SystemD.Weather in Africa3. Organic(有机的)farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural e of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized by the use of green manure(肥料),biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productivity.Limiting the use of man-made chemicals or completely doing away with them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. Organically grown food products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world-farmland cover. The hard work of Sir Albert Howard, the Father of Organic Farming, has paid off.Advantages of Organic Farming:(1)The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion(侵蚀).(2)Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more topsoil.(3)Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.(4)The use of green pesticides(杀虫剂)is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human’s health.Disadvantages of Organic Farming:(1)Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.(2)Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change.Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO2,but not to a significant degree. However, though there are some disadvantages to organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional anic agriculture is surely better in the long term.1.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard________.A.worked hard for nothingB.succeeded in organic farmingC.spent all his time on organic farmingD.didn’t expect organic farming to be successful2.According to the passage, compared to traditional farming,organicfarming________.a.is more environmentally friendlyb.produces a lot more foodes less energyd.results in more weeds in the farmlande.is better for human’s healthA.abcB.acdC.aceD.bce3.The author’s attitude toward organic farming is________.A.anxiousB.hopelessC.unclearD.optimistic4.The writer wrote this passage to tell us________.A.the development of agricultureB.what kind of food is being grown at presentC.why organic farming is so popular around the worldD.what organic farming is and its advantages and disadvantages4. Getting stuck in a traffic jam is one of the most boring problems for people living in big cities. The fact that you’re moving so slowly leads too stress, anger and the wish that your car could just fly over the traffic like an airplane.Soon, however, that wish could come true .On May 8, US car-renting company Uber showed off what it described as “the transportation mode of the future: on-demand air transport,”reported ABC News .According to Nikhill Goel, head of products for Uber Air, the company's air taxi service may launch test flights in the US cities of Dallas and Los Angeles , as well as Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, as early as 2020. If everything goes according to plan, passengers will be able to fly to work by 2023 .When the Olympics comes to Los Angeles in 2028 . Uber “expects to have hundreds , if not thousands , of its aircraft in the skies.” Goel told Newsweek .So what would Uber's flying vehicles be like ?They are small , electric aircraft that take off and land vertically (垂直地) , ther give off zero emissions (排放) and are quiet enough to operate in cities .Just like an airplane , the vehicles will have fixed wings to help them glide . But while a helicopter has just one big fixed rotor (定量) . Uber's vehicles will have multiple rotors , which will help increase fuel efficiency (效率) while reducing emissions and noise.Because of these fixed wines and multiple rotors . Uber’s flyingtaxis“should be quieter and safer than a helicopter.” reported ABC News .However , the service still has a long way to go before it's ready to accept passengers. For example , to avoid any potential accidents . Uber is working with NASA to study air traffic control problems associated with low-flying aircraft. In today’s world, understanding how to analyze big data is a significant tool for students, scientists, and citizens alike-and a key topic during both speeches at the 2017 Research Teachers Conference.During their speeches, Lisa Purcell, Senior Scientist at Regeneron and Ruth Krumhansl, founder of the Oceans of Data Institute, both offered recommendations to more than 200 teachers at the conference on how to effectively use big data in the classroom.“Having a lot of data is worthless unless you can make sense of it, ” Ruth said. “We have a responsibility to help our students make wise decisions in a very complex world.” R uth explained that she is always seeking to increase data literacy(数据素养能力)and transform science education using big data. With these resources, students can conduct a variety of big data research projects -all from the classroom. Moreover, even students interested in non-STEM(科学、技术、工程、数学)careers like consulting or business analytics can benefit from understanding how to analyze and understand data sets.Lisa stressed that teachers have the power to change the world by providing the next generation with the correct analytical tools and approaches to handle such large quantities of information. “You can train the next generation with them to do whatever, whether it’s dealing with climate change, creating a vaccine (疫苗) for Ebola, or becoming the next Pres ident of the U.S. or Prime Minister of Canada,” Lisa said.Understanding big data is critical to students’ success in school and their future careers. According to Ruth, students should begin working with data from a young age. This will enable students to practice analytical thinking as early as possible, and to begin asking important questions about what is going on in our world. And big data can help answer questions that students have. “Students are interested in what is known, but they get more exc ited about what is not known,” she said.1.According to Paragraph 2, we know the speeches of Lisa and Ruth _______.A.advise students to increase data literacyB.ask teachers to know how to analyze big dataC.show the significance of big data in non-STEMD.advise teachers to apply big data in the classroom2.What can we know about Ruth?A.She was a real specialist in analyzing big data.B.She laid the base for students to do big data projects.C.She stressed the important role of teachers in using big data.D.She made outstanding achievements with the help of big data.3.Which of the following may Lisa agree with?A.Teachers are given the power to change the world.B.Teachers should try to transform science education.C.Teachers can help students apply big data to many fields.D.Teachers know the importance of big data for students.4.What may be the best title for the passage?A.How can students analyze big data?B.How can students make use of big data?C.Big data-a significant tool in today’s classroomD.Big data-a necessary subject for students to learn6. Call small, organic agriculture really feed the world? Won’t we need science to produce enough food as the world population is growing to 9 billion by 2050? The answer to both questions is YES—but that science may look different than you think. We’ve been told that the only way we’ll be able to feed the growing population is through the science of GM(转基因)crops and chemicals. But the latest scientific studies are saying just the opposite. In study after study, the message about agriculture is: To feed the world, we need to support sustainable(可持续的)agriculture on different. Local, family farms that work with nature. In 2008, an international study found that sustainable agriculture, not GM crops, shows more hope of ending hunger. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Technology for Development (know as the IAASTD), calls for a change of the world’s food and farming systems. The Assessment said that industrial agriculture has greatly destroyed the world’s soils and other natural resources, and now is doing harm to water, energy, and weather safety. The report warns that expensive, short-term ways—including GM crops—are not likely to cut down long-term hunger, and could even make environment and social problems worse in many places.A recent report by the UN Environment Program shows that food problems will become more serious because of environment problems and strongly supports sustainable agriculture on small family farms. It also showed that a worldwide change to organics could actually increase the world’s food production by as much as 50%--enough to feed a population of 9 billion people with the land we have now. GM crops, once popular, are now being questioned worldwide.1.How can we feed the growing population of the world according to the passage?A.In expensive, short-term ways.B.By encouraging industrial agriculture.C.By developing small, organic agriculture.D.Through the science of GM crops and chemicals.2.We can learn from the last paragraph that there will be no food problems if_________.A.the world supports sustainable agricultureB.we increase a lot of farm landC.the environment problems are solvedD.all the small family farms are used3.Which of the following can best describe sustainable agriculture?A.the science of GM cropsB.Working on small family farms.C.a fast way to increase t he world’s food production.D.An approach to agriculture without harming the environment.4.What might be talked about if there is one more paragraph?A.The causes of food problems.B.The disadvantages of GM crops.C.The development of industrial agriculture.D.The disadvantages of sustainable agriculture.8. NASA might be famous for sending rockets up to space quickly. But it will be more famous for making your next holiday come more quickly. The space agency is working on a new plane, which could solve the problems of supersonic(超音速的) flight and vastly increase the speed of journeys abroad. If successful, the plane would be able to fly between New York and London in just three hours. And it would reduce the time spent flying other journeys by a half, since it could be used more broadly. Until now, the problem with such planes has been the sonic boom(声爆), made famous by the original Concorde. That happens when a plane reaches supersonic speeds. It is a thunderous noise that upsets people on the ground---- disturbing animals and even causing physical problems to materials and houses underneath. It was that effect that led Congress to ban such planes from being used over the US land, a decision that in turn was responsible for Concorde’s failing to b e commercially used.In view of the problem, the space agency has developed a new technology and tried it out in wind tunnels, and now believes that it could be put to commercial use. That plane will fly as high as 55,000 feet---- far higher than normal planes---and make a sound of only 60 decibels. That’s far less than 90 decibels thrown out by normal planes, and is roughly in line with a car on the motorway or a busy restaurant.“As long as we can get endorsement from the general public, the plane will probably be something that’s acceptable,” said Peter Coen, project manager for NASA’s commercial supersonic research team, in a new Bloomberg report. “If we get approved, we will have the full-sized version of the plane tried out and the plane will b e put into use.”1.Why does the author mention Concorde?A.To suggest the rapid development of planes.B.To stress the negative effect of sonic booms.C.To introduce how a commercial plane is designed.D.To show Congress’ important role in making planes.2.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A.The basic data of the new plane.B.The working principle of the new plane.C.The problems of the new plane.D.The potential market of the new plane.3.What does the underlined word “endorsement” in paragraph 5 mean?A.Responsemitment.C.InvestmentD.Agreement4.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To inform people of NASA’s new plane.B.To prove the disadvantages of supersonic flight.C.To explain why speed matters in supersonic flight.D.To clarify some misunderstandings about commercial planes.9. 2017 was an influential year for artificial intelligence, not just in terms of the advancement of the technology itself, but also for the development of our understanding of AI’s influence on our society. When we talk about AI, often we focus on the belief that it is going to take away certain types of jobs. However, we often ignore the fact that this technology will also slowly spread into most of our lives during work.I refer to this as the difference between AI and IA: artificial intelligence vs. intelligence augmentation (智能增强). Despite the great steps we’ve made in AI development and will continue to make in 2018, we are still years away from AI fully replacing human jobs. However, we are much closer to seeing the influence of AI spread into almost every job and the growth in human intelligence.Take a doctor for example: AI will soon be able to test and diagnose (诊断) common diseases more quickly and accurately than humans. Now, doctors can spend more of their time explaining the possible diagnoses, communicating with patients and developing unique, reliable treatment plans that are most effective for each specific patient.Algorithms (算法) are desirable for their ability to make well-informed decisions quickly and accurately, allowing us to focus on the parts of our job that are most important. But that same power allows algorithms that are making incorrect decisions to do so with greater speed and widespread influence than humans have ever had.2018 will be the year that companies purchasing AI products don’t just ask about the predictive power of an algorithm-they will make sure that algorithms are tested in advance, greatly reducing their potential unexpected influence.1.What do most people mainly focus on AI?A.AI can be completely controlled.B.AI will replace certain human jobs.C.AI is advanced technology.D.AI will gradually spread into our lives.2.Why does the author mention the doctor?A.To prove AI will make more doctors unemployed.B.To prove AI always makes right decisions.C.To prove AI will change the way we work.D.To prove AI can make treatment plans.3.What is the author’s attitude towards AI and IA?A.Objective.B.Negative.C.Optimistic.D.Uninterested.4.What will probably the following paragraph refer to?A.To tell the readers how AI can be closely controlled.B.To compare the very difference between AI and IA.C.To explain to us why an Algorithm is so important.D.To predict the development of AI in the year of 2018.10. If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no value. Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense? One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions (任务), and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many technologies it provides. Are organically grown foods the best food choices
Are organically grown foods the best food alternatives? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others. The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs.Do you think organically grown foods are the best food alternatives? The debate has been discussed for a long time. Advocates of organic food frequently proclaim that such products are safer and morenitrous than others.Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderance of written material proceeding such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for folklore.Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new vitamins and other foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports which natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains and the like. One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can maintain a good health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is a real cause for concern if consumers particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and purchase only expensive organic foods instead.。

This phase is a two-fold one, including recovery and prosperity. During the recovery period there is ever-growing expansion of existing facilities, and new facilities for production are created. More businesses are created and older ones expanded. Improvements of various kinds are made. There is an ever increasing optimism about the future of economic growth. Much capital is invested in machinery or heavy industry. More labor is employed. More raw materials are required. As one part of the economy develops, other parts are affected. For example, a large expansion in automobiles results in an expansion of the steel, glass, and rubber industries. Roads are required; thus the cement and machinery industries are stimulated. Demand for labor and materials results in greater prosperity for workers and farmers from increased demand for supplies of raw materials. This increases purchasing power and the volume of goods bought and sold. Thus prosperity is diffused (扩散) among the various segments of the population. This prosperity period may continue to rise and rise without an apparent end. However, a time comes when this phase reaches a peak and stops spiraling (盘旋上升) upwards. Apart from these sciences is philosophy. In the first place, pure or theoretical knowledge has been sought only for the purpose of understanding. What distinguishes man from animals is that he knows and needs to know. If man did not know that the world existed, and that the world was of a certain kind, that he was in the world and that he himself was of a certain kind, he wouldn't be man. The technical aspects or applications of knowledge are equally necessary for man and are of the greatest importance, because they also contribute to defining him as man and permit him to pursue a life increasingly more truly human. But even while enjoying the results of technical progress, he must defend the value of pure knowledge. Knowledge sought directly for its practical applications will have immediate and foreseeable success, but pure or theoretical knowledge will not. Let me recall a well-known example. If the Greek mathematicians had not applied themselves to the investigation of conic (圆锥形的) sections, keenly and without the least suspicion that it might someday be useful, it would not have been possible centuries later to navigate far from shore. The first men to study the nature of electricity could not imagine that their experiments, carried on because of mere intellectual curiosity, would eventually lead to modern electrical technology, without which we can scarcely think of contemporary life. Pure knowledge is valuable for its own sake, because the human spirit cannot resign itself to ignorance. But, in addition, it is the foundation for practical results that would not have been reached if this knowledge had not been sought disinterestedly.16.The most important advances made by mankind come from________ according to the passage.A. practical applications of social sciencesB. practical applications of pure knowledgeC. sciences dealing with the natural worldD. the biological sciences17.The author does NOT include among the sciences the study of_________.A. chemistryB. astronomyC. economicsD. literature18.The author points out that the Greeks who studied conicsections ________.A. were mathematiciansB. were interested in navigationC. were unaware of the practical value of their studiesD. worked with electricity19.The title below that best expresses the ideas of this passage is________.A. Reading ComprehensionPassage 1Teaching children to read well from the start is the most important task of elementary schools. But relying on educators to approach this task correctly can be a great mistake. Many schools continue to employ instructional methods that have been proven ineffective. The staying power of the ―look-say‖ or ―whole-word‖ method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively. The whole-word approach to reading stresses the meaning of words over the meaning of letters, thinking over decoding, developing a sight vocabulary of familiar words over developing the ability to unlock the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. It fits in with the self-directed, ―learning how to learn‖ activities recommended by advocates (倡导者)of ―open‖ classrooms and with the concept that children have to be developmentally ready to begin reading. Before 1963, no major publisher put out anything but these ―Run-Spot-Run‖ readers. However, in 1955, Rudolf Flesch touched off what has been called ―the great debate‖ in beginning reading. In his best-seller Why Johnny Can’t Read, Flesch indicted(控诉)the nation’s public schools for miseducating students by using t he look-say method. He said—and more scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert Dykstra later confirmed—that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics(语音学), is far superior.Systematic phonics first teaches children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds; it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words, it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast majority of the most common words in the English language can be learned. Phonics does not devalue the importance of thinking about the meaning of words and sentences; it simply recognizes that decoding is the logical and necessary first step.C 31. The author feels that counting on educators to teach reading correctly is___________.A. only logical and naturalB. the expected positionC. probably a mistakeD.merely effective instructionA 32. The author indicts the look-say reading approach because___________.A. it overlooks decodingB. Rudolf Flesch agrees with himC. he says it is boringD. many schools continue to use this methodD 33. One major difference between the look-say method of learning reading and the phonics method is__________.A. look-say is simplerB. phonics takes longer to learnC. look-say is easier to teachD. phonics gives readers access to far more wordsB 34. The phrase ―touch off‖ (Line 1, Para.3) most probably means________.A. talk about shortlyB. start or causeC. compare withD. opposeC 35. According to the author, which of the following statements is true?A. Phonics approach regards whole-word method as unimportant.B. The whole-word approach emphasizes decoding.C. In phonics approach, it is necessary and logical to employ decoding.D. Phonics is superior because it stresses the meaning of words thus the vast majority of most common words can be learned.Passage 2Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods – a term whose meaning varies greatly – frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others. The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderance (优势) of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and formed the basis for folklore.Almost daily the public is besieged (围攻) by claims for ―no-aging‖ diets, new vitamins and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains, and the like. One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are mislead if they believe organic food can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foods instead.A 26. The word ―advocate‖ in Line 2, Para. 1 is closest in meaning to which of the following?A. proponents.B. merchants.C. inspectors.D. consumers.C 27. According to the first paragraph, which of the following is true about the term ―organic foods‖?A. It is accepted by most nutritionists.B. It has been used only in recent years.C. It has no fixed meaning.D. It is seldom used by consumers.A 28. The author implies that there is cause for concern if consumers with limited incomes buy organic foods instead of conventionally grown foods because ______.A. organic foods can be more expensive but are often no better than conventionally grown foodsB. many organic foods are actually less nutritious than similar conventionally grown foodsC. conventionally grown foods are more readily available than organic foodsD. too many farmers will stop using conventional methods to grow food cropsB 29. From the last paragraph, consumers who believe that organic foods are better than conventionally grown foods are often ______.A. carelessB. mistakenC. thriftyD. wealthyD 30. What is the author’s attitude toward the claims made by advocates of health foods?A. Enthusiastic.B. Favorable.C. Neutral.D. Doubtful.Passage 3There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own concept of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly. For some people, simply being able to live their life with a minimum of misery and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his frugal life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own goals of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one’s goals at too low a level of achievement.A wise counselor once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professional success: ―You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park, or riding the subway downtown,‖ The counselor added, ―You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.‖C 31. In the first paragraph, the author implies that_______ are essential in achieving success.A. ability and goalsB. goals and determinationC. ability and environmentD. goals and environmentC 32.The word ―frugal‖(Line 3, Para. 2) means_________.A. wealthyB. wastefulC. thriftyD. miserableD 33. Some rich people consider themselves unsuccessful because___________.A. their life is miserableB. they do not live in peaceC. their goals are too lowD. they are not rich enough by their own standardsD 34. The last paragraph implies that___________.A. we should have high goalsB. success means achieving great goalsC. success means taking a walk in the parkD. success means trying one’s best at what one really likesA 35. This passage mainly talks about___________A. the definition of successB. how to achieve successC. how to set goalsD. the importance of goalsIII. 有机种植和无机种植的区别英语作文
有机种植和无机种植的区别英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Differences Between Organic and Inorganic FarmingAs someone deeply concerned about the environment and the food we eat, I have spent a lot of time researching and thinking about the pros and cons of organic versus inorganic farming. These two approaches to agriculture have some major differences that I believe are important for everyone to understand.Organic farming is a method of crop and livestock production that excludes the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms. Instead, organic farmers rely on natural fertilizers like manure or compost to enrich the soil and techniques like crop rotation and biological pest control to manage weeds and pests. The key principles of organic agriculture include working with natural systems rather than inputs, enhancing soil health, minimizing pollution, and promoting biodiversity.Inorganic farming, often referred to as conventional farming, is more focused on maximizing yields through the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical inputs. Genetically engineered seeds are also commonly used. While this industrial approach has helped boost food production, many have raised concerns about its negative environmental impacts and potential human health risks. One major difference is the overall environmental impact. Organic farming tends to be better for the environment in several ways. First, it does not rely on chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can run off into waterways, polluting rivers, lakes and oceans. The fertilizers used in organic systems come from natural sources like manure and vegetable matter which release nutrients gradually. Conventional synthetic fertilizers, in contrast, can deliver an excess of nutrients that ends up in water supplies.Organic farming has also been shown to promote greater biodiversity of plants, insects, and soil organisms compared to conventional methods. The lack of pesticides allows a wider variety of species to thrive. Organic systems also avoid monocropping and frequent tilling which can degrade soil health over time. The healthier soils found on organic farms have higherlevels of beneficial microbes, earthworms, and other organisms that support nutrient cycling.Another key difference is the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which are strictly prohibited in organic systems. While genetic engineering can increase crop yields, there are concerns about potentially unintended consequences on human health and the environment from introducing foreign genes into food crops. Organic proponents believe it is better to allow nature to evolve species over long periods rather than forcing dramatic genetic changes in the lab. When it comes to nutritional value and food safety, there is some evidence that organic foods have higher levels of certain nutrients like vitamin C, iron, magnesium and antioxidants. Organic produce also does not contain residues of synthetic pesticides which have been linked to increased cancer risk and other health issues, especially for children. That said, both organic and inorganic foods sold have to meet strict government safety standards. In terms of yields, conventional farming methods generally produce more crops per acre in the short-term because of the synthetic fertilizers and pest control methods used. However, over longer periods, organic systems can achieve competitiveyields, especially in harsh weather conditions. This is because the healthy, nutrient-rich soils found on organic farms improve drought resistance and resilience to other climate shocks. Organic systems also use less energy since they don't require manufacturing inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. There are some challenges with adopting organic practices on a large scale. Converting conventional farmland to organic status can take several years since the soil has to completely flush out residues of prohibited substances. This transition period means reduced yields for a few years which can negatively impact farmers' incomes. Organic farms also tend to have higher labor costs since many tasks like weeding and making compost need to be done by hand. The prices of organic foods also tend to be 20-100% higher than their conventional counterparts. While some of this premium goes to covering the higher production costs, it also reflects growing consumer demand for organic products perceived as healthier and more environmentally-friendly. From an economic standpoint, organic agriculture creates more jobs per acre since it is more labor-intensive. However, conventional agriculture provides an overall cheaper food supply which is important for food security in developing nations.Overall, while conventional farming currently accounts for the majority of global food production, I believe organic methods need to play an increasing role as we work towards a more sustainable food system. Climate change, water scarcity, and soil degradation are making it more important than ever to adopt regenerative agricultural practices that work in harmony with nature rather than trying to overpower it with synthetic inputs. In my view, an ideal approach would be one that combines certain techniques from both organic and conventional systems based on the specific conditions and needs. For instance, organic farms could use certain synthetic fertilizers allowed in organic production when deficiencies are identified. Conversely, conventional farmers should work to reduce their reliance on chemicals through approaches like integrated pest management. No single approach is perfect, but I believe organic farming principles should be the foundation that we build from. Enhancing soil health, protecting biodiversity, minimizing pollution, and producing nutritious foods need to be priorities. At the same time, we must find ways to improve yields on organic farms through techniques like polycultures, selectivebreeding, and better soil management. Scaling up organic production while increasing its productivity will be crucial for feeding a growing global population in a truly sustainable manner.篇2The Differences Between Organic and Non-Organic FarmingAs a student, one of the topics that has really piqued my interest lately is the subject of organic versus non-organic farming methods. With increasing concerns over health, environmental sustainability, and ethical food production, this is an important issue that more people need to be aware of. In this essay, I will explore the key differences between these two agricultural approaches.First, let's define what we mean by organic and non-organic farming. Organic farming is an agricultural system that relies on techniques like crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and control pests. Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, growth regulators, and livestock feed additives are generally avoided. In contrast,non-organic farming, also known as conventional farming, allows the use of synthetic inputs like pesticides and fertilizers derived from non-organic sources. One of the biggest differences is the use and avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs. Non-organic farms routinely use chemical pesticides to protect crops from insects, weeds, fungi, and other threats. While effective at increasing yields, these substances can persist in the environment and accumulate in the body over time, potentially causing health issues. Organic farms eschew synthetic pesticides in favor of integrated pest management techniques like introducing beneficial insects, planting pest-trapping crops, and applying organic pesticides derived from natural sources like plants. The use of synthetic fertilizers is another key distinction. Non-organic farms rely heavily on chemical fertilizers to replenish soil nutrients and boost productivity. However, these can pollute groundwater and contribute to issues like algal blooms in bodies of water. Organic fertilizers like manure, compost, and green manure release nutrients slowly and improve soil structure and biodiversity over time. From an environmental perspective, organic farming is generally viewed as more sustainable in the long run. The lack of synthetic chemical inputs combined with practices like croprotation and polyculture helps preserve soil quality, protect water sources, reduce pollution, increase biodiversity, and promote a healthier ecosystem. Conventional farming's heavy use of chemicals can degrade soil over time and negatively impact surrounding habitats and wildlife. When it comes to health, many people believe that organically grown foods are more nutritious and lack potentially harmful residues. While the research is mixed, some studies suggest organic fruits and vegetables may have higher levels of nutrients like vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. More importantly, organic foods are free from synthetic pesticide residues that may have adverse effects in high quantities. However, it's important to wash all produce thoroughly, as even organic crops may have some level of natural pesticide residues. There are economic factors to consider as well. Organic farming is typically more labor intensive and yields tend to be lower, resulting in higher costs for organic products. Supporters argue that when you account for the environmental costs of conventional farming's heavy resource usage and pollution, organic methods make more economic sense in the long run. Critics contend that conventional farming's higher yields are crucial for meeting global food demands. There's also thechallenge for small organic farms competing against large-scale conventional agricultural operations. From an ethical standpoint, concerns have been raised about the living conditions and growth hormones/antibiotics used in conventional livestock farming. Organic animal farming prohibits these practices and generally allows animals to roam and feed more naturally. That said, both types of farming involve killing sentient beings, which some would consider unethical regardless of the method. In terms of food quality and taste, this is highly subjective. Those in the organic camp believe foods cultivated through natural methods simply taste better, while critics argue any perceived differences are psychological. Some blind taste tests have detected differences, while others have not. It likely comes down to the specific foods being compared and individual tastes.Overall, organic farming is a more holistic system that emphasizes ecological balance and a "do no harm" approach. Conventional farming prioritizes productivity and economic efficiency, even when that involves disrupting natural systems. Both have pros and cons that need to be carefully weighed.Personally, after examining the evidence, I lean towards preferring organic methods overall. To me, the potential healthbenefits and environmental advantages outweigh the lower yields and higher prices. I do believe there is a place for an integrated approach that utilizes some sustainable conventional farming techniques as well. But on the whole, I'm convinced that a large-scale shift towards organic practices would be better for people and the planet in the long run. That said, I know this is a complex issue with many facets to consider. There are no easy answers. As a society, we need to have thoughtful discussions weighing priorities like environmental sustainability, health, ethics, economics, and productively feeding a growing global population. My personal philosophy is that we should farm in a way that respects and works in harmony with nature as much as possible. But I'm interested to hear other perspectives as well. What are your thoughts on organic versus non-organic farming? I imagine it's an issue that will only grow more prominent and hotly debated in the years ahead. For young people like myself, it's crucial that we educate ourselves so we can make informed decisions about how we want our food produced. The choices we make now will impact future generations and the environment we leave behind.篇3The Differences Between Organic and Non-Organic FarmingOver the last few decades, the organic food movement has gained significant traction around the world. As consumers have become more health-conscious and environmentally aware, the demand for organically grown produce has skyrocketed. But what exactly is organic farming, and how does it differ from conventional, non-organic methods? In this essay, I'll explore the key distinctions between these two approaches to agriculture.First, let's define what we mean by "organic" farming. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic agriculture is a production system that avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, and livestock feed additives. Instead, organic farmers rely on natural substances and processes, like crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. In contrast, non-organic or conventional farming typically employs synthetic chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and other pesticides. These substances are designed to boost crop yields, control weeds, and eliminate insects and other pests that can damage crops. While these methods have allowed for increased food production, they also raise concerns aboutpotential negative impacts on human health and the environment. One of the primary arguments in favor of organic farming is that it produces food that is free from synthetic chemicals and pesticide residues. Proponents of organic agriculture argue that these synthetic substances can be harmful to human health, particularly for children and pregnant women. Some studies have linked exposure to certain pesticides to an increased risk of various health issues, including cancer, birth defects, and neurological problems. On the other hand, supporters of conventional farming maintain that the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers is carefully regulated and that the levels of residues found on conventionally grown produce are well within safe limits established by government agencies. They argue that these methods are necessary to meet the growing demand for food and to ensure an adequate and affordable supply.Another key difference between organic and non-organic farming lies in their impact on the environment. Organic agriculture is often touted as being more sustainable and environmentally friendly. By avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic farming helps to reduce soil and watercontamination, protect biodiversity, and promote soil health. Organic farming practices, such as crop rotation and the use of cover crops, can also help to improve soil fertility and prevent erosion. In contrast, critics of conventional farming argue that the widespread use of synthetic chemicals can have negative consequences for the environment. Pesticides and fertilizers can run off into waterways, contaminating streams, rivers, and groundwater supplies. The use of synthetic fertilizers can also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Additionally, some conventional farming practices, such as monoculture (the cultivation of a single crop over a large area), can deplete soil nutrients and reduce biodiversity. It's important to note, however, that the environmental impact of any farming system depends on various factors, including the specific practices employed, the location, and the scale of the operation. Some conventional farmers have adopted more sustainable practices, such as precision agriculture, which aims to optimize the use of inputs like fertilizers and pesticides, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impacts.Another consideration when comparing organic andnon-organic farming is productivity and crop yields. Proponentsof conventional farming argue that the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides allows for higher yields and greater efficiency, which is necessary to feed a growing global population. They contend that organic farming methods alone cannot meet the world's food demands. However, advocates of organic agriculture counter that these yield comparisons often fail to account for the long-term sustainability of organic systems. They argue that organic farming practices, such as crop rotation and the use of cover crops, can improve soil fertility over time, leading to increased yields. Additionally, some studies have suggested that organic farming can be just as productive as conventional methods, particularly in areas with favorable growing conditions and access to organic fertilizers and pest control methods.Beyond the debates around health, environmental impact, and productivity, there are also economic considerations to factor in. Organic farming can be more labor-intensive and may require higher initial investments in areas like certification, specialized equipment, and marketing. As a result, organic produce often commands higher prices in the marketplace, which can make it less accessible to consumers with limited financial resources. On the flip side, conventional farming relies heavily on purchased inputs like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which can be costly and subject to price fluctuations. Additionally, some argue that the true costs of conventional farming are not fully accounted for, as the environmental and health impacts of synthetic chemicals are often externalized and borne by society as a whole. As a student, it's essential to approach this topic with an open mind and to consider the nuances and complexities involved. While organic farming may align more closely with my personal values and beliefs around health and environmental stewardship, I also recognize the challenges and trade-offs associated with feeding a growing global population.Ultimately, I believe that a balanced approach that incorporates elements of both organic and conventional farming practices may be the most pragmatic solution. This could involve the judicious and responsible use of synthetic inputs when necessary, coupled with a strong emphasis on sustainable farming methods, such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and integrated pest management.Additionally, continued research and innovation in areas like precision agriculture, biological pest control, and plant breedingcould help to bridge the gap between organic and conventional farming, reducing the need for synthetic chemicals while maintaining or improving productivity. In conclusion, the debate between organic and non-organic farming is complex and multifaceted. While organic agriculture offers potential benefits in terms of human health, environmental sustainability, and long-term soil fertility, conventional farming methods have played a crucial role in boosting food production and meeting global demand. As a society, we must continue to explore and refine our agricultural practices, seeking a balance between productivity, environmental stewardship, and public health. By approaching this issue with open and critical minds, we can work towards a more sustainable and equitable food system for all.。

1How to win loveLove makes the world go around .Love to us is what water to fish; Love shines the most beautiful light of humanity, we born in it and lives by it. How to win love? It is an important lesson we should learn. My views are as follows.Firstly ,one who wants to get love should have a heart full of love themselves, a man with a loving heart will be endowed with a good opportunity to win love from others; Secondly, an old saying goes that the quickest way to get love is to show love to the one we love deeply. If we love someone, don’t shun it, but speak it out, then, we will win love in return. In my opinion: Love isn't all about looking at a good looking woman/man and hearing fireworks go off all the time. That's usually physical attraction, but it's normal at the beginning of our relationship. Love is respect, wanting to help that person in any aspect of their lives; protect them from harm's way; feeling safe with that person; proud of being with them; sharing your hopes and dreams together, feeling like you can conquer the world together! This is the true love.Love is so precious a gift that we should treasure it and at the same time we should win love from others properly.2The Fourth Millennium in My EyesThe Fourth Millennium is coming, people are singing, dancing and celebrating, and the whole world takes on a happy and joyful atmosphere. Yes, we are in the time of the Fourth Millennium now.In a broad sense, different countries are on good terms with each other, without war, terrorism nuclear weapons but peace, stability and prosperity; people from all over the world can live together friendly and equally without hatred and racial discrimination; people are in good and harmonious relationship with our environment, our environment becomes a better place for people to live in. in a narrow sense, science and technology are more advanced; People are more high—qualified, society will be more civilized. In a word, the whole world is developing on a healthy prosperous and harmonious road. This is what will be in my eyes in the Fourth Millennium. As long as we strive for the goal and try our best to achieve it, we will realize our dream.3The Organic FoodsAre organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others.growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderance of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for folklore.I stand here today to organic food and Normal Food for my personal opinion. organic food , we can see that he is the growth of the natural environment, no pollution, and Normal Food is in the heaven and the normal growth, nutrition, the relatively organic food nutrition is relatively high. organic food safety is relatively high, but the organic food than Normal Food varieties of the species. organic food prices are higher. So I think the organic food , although the price is expensive, but it's still keep us healthy life and good food.4 Technology cannot change the condition of humanityAs there are two sides in every story, thus different people have different ideas about whether technology can change the condition of humanity.Narrowly speaking, it can’t. The past century witnessed unpre cedented war and violence as well as unprecedented technological progress, some countries brought wars and disasters to human beings in order to get more resources and territories. Also, poverty and frequent natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, are entangling people. However, broadly speaking, it can and has done. With the rapid development of science and technology, people now live a more comfortable life than ever before. And due to the computer and internet, people in different places can communicate with each other very conveniently. Global village comes into being as a result of advanced transportation system. At the time, many diseases of which doctors had no ideas in the past can be treated now with the advanced medical technology. Technolo gy does change human’s lives. In a sum, I hold the view that technology is a double-sword. If we can utilize it properly for the purpose of making better lives for human beings, we can change the condition of humanity by technology.5individualism and collectivismThe values held by one culture are apt to differ from those of another. Generally speaking , individualism is a characteristic of western cultures while collectivism is a feature of eastern cultures.Individualism is the belief that every person is a distinct entity and ought to assert and achieve independence from others. Individualists advocate that society is only the means for an individual to achieve his personal goals. In the society based on individualism, self-reliance and self-affirmation are encouraged. People can freely express their feelings without outside interference, and can state different views publicly. An individual has the right to protect his privacy , make his own decisions ,and lead his life in his own way. The individual is permitted to pursue his self-interest on the condition that he never violate the rights of other people or the laws and the social moralities which protect the equal rights of all the people.By contrast, collectivism makes emphasis on the welfare of organization or group. Individualists won't be encouraged to pursue self-interest since this may be considered a thread to the conformity and harmony of the group. An individual is seen just as a member of a group and he must sacrifice his own interest to meet the demands of the group whenever there is a conflict. Collectivists are reluctant to attract other people's attention and they do not state different views from other people. The Future of High-Tech FarmingHigh-Tech farming provides an amazing forum for us in the world. Chicken and eggs production can be calculated by day; without a large pasture, you still could feed hundreds of calves; wheal and many kinds of vegetables grow fast without eaten by worms.During the time passing, something bad side unfolded to human beings. The foods became tasteless; Once some disease explored, these animals were so vulnerable to bacteria that people had to killed them. Some people freak out, however, they expect too much to high-tech farming before. They shouted to all over the world like it is something panic. They thought like this: high-tech farming is not only cruel to animals but also dangerous to our health. The only way to prevent the destiny is give up high-tech farming right now. Let’s go back to traditional farming. Just like some silly man who spill dirty water with child. Some others ponder on these. They clearly know that all the difficulties we suffered was just temporary situation. It should never be the reason that we should give up. The thought that go back to traditional is impossible, is stupid, is ridiculous. But they also knew that high-tech farming really exist some sever problems which might bring disasters that would made us lost a lot even damaged us all. However, what we should pay attention to, they believed, was not how to abandon it. The most urgent work should be done was how to prevent the badness. So, the future of high-tech farming would be bright. We, human beings, should treat the technology curiously but not just throw these into rubbish.课后汉译英:1What is it we want most from a marriage? To love and be loved. To be happy and secure. To grow ,to discover. A love relationship is the garden in which we plant ,cultivate and harvest the most precious of coups, our own self, and in which our spouse is provided the same rich soil in which to bloom..We cannot obtain what we want unless our partner also gets what he or she wants. A woman may, for instance, want to go to the symphony. Her husband might hate symphonies. But by spending a few hours listening to music he doesn’t care for, he can bring joy to his partner. That’s pretty cheap price to pay for joy, isn’t it?2At present, with further progress of economic globalization, countries are increasingly interdependent, and the pursuit of peace ,development and cooperation has become an irresistible trend of the time, presenting the world with rare opportunities for development. At the same time, uncertainties and destabilizing factors in world economic growth have increased recently, as evidenced by continued turbulence in the financial market, rising prices for energy and resources, acute problem of food security, and growing pressure of global inflation. There remain numerous grim challenges in the effort to build a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.3China is the largest countries in the world, her territory being about the size of the whole of Europe. In the vast country of ours there are large areas of fertile land which provide us with food and clothing; mountain ranges across its length and breadth with extensive forests and rich mineral deposits; many rivers and lakes which provide us with water transport and irrigation, and a long coastline which facilitates communication with nations beyond the seas.4The success of science has less to do with a particular method than with an essential attitude of the scientist. This attitude is essentially one of inquiry, experimentation and humility before the facts. Therefore, a good scientist is an honest one. True scientists do not bow to any authority but they are ever ready to modify or even abandon their ideas if adequate evidence is found contradicting them. Scientists, they do place a high value on honesty.Scientists must accept facts even when they would like them to be different. They must strive to distinguish between what they see and what they wish to see----for humanity’s capacity for self-deception is vast. People have traditionally tended to adopt general rules, beliefs, creeds, theories, and ideas without thoroughly questioning their validity and to retain them long after they have been shown to be meaningless, false, or at least questionable. The most widespread assumptions are the least questioned. Most often, when an idea is adopted, particular attention is given to cases that seem to support it, while cases that seem to refute it are distorted, belittled, or ignored. We feel deeply that it is a sign of weakness to “change out minds.”Competent scientists, however, must be expert at changing their minds. This is because science seeks not defend our beliefs but to improve them. Better theories are made by those who are not hung up on prevailing ones.5Respect versus popularity ----it is the old conflict between being professional and being personal. We want to do a good job, but we want to be friends with everyone, too. The truth is, you can’t always be liked if you do your job properly. And the desire to keep everyone happy can become a weakness. If you do your job properly you’ll seldom be everyone’s favourite person. But the payoff comes in the form of a deeper liking and admiration. Respect is like money in the bank: you have to put it in before you can draw it out. Don’t worry about popularity, work on respect. That will take you a lot further in the long run.First, the teacher’s personality should be pleasantly live and attractive. This does not rule out people who are physically plain, or even ugly, because many such have great personal charm. But it does rule out such types as the over—excitable, melancholy, frigid, sarcastic, cynical, frustrated, and overbearing. I would say too, that it excludes all of dull or purely negative personality.Secondly, it is not merely desirable but essential for a teacher to have a genuine capacity for sympathy—in the literal meaning of that word—a capacity to tune in to the minds and feelings of other people. Closely related with this is the capacity to be tolerant—not, indeed, of what is wrong, but of the frailty and immaturity of human nature which induce people, and again especially children, to make mistakes. The process of learning an art can be divided conveniently into two parts:one, the mastery of the theory;the other, the mastery of the practice.if I want to learn the art of medicine,I must first know the facts about the human body, about various dieases.when I have all this theoretical knowledge,I am by no means competent in the art of medicine.I shall become a master in this art only after a great deal of practice, until evently the results of my theoretical knowledge and the results of my practice are blended into one—my intuition, the essence of the mastery of any art.but aside from learn the theory and practice, there is a third factor necessary to becoming a master in any art—the mastery of the art must be a matter of ultimate concern.there must be nothing else in the world more important than tha art.this holds true for the music, for medicine, for carpency—and for love.and, maybe, her lies the answer to the queation of why people in our country try rarely to learn this art,in spite of their obvious failures:in spite of deep-seated carving for love, almost everything else is considered to be more important than love:success, prestige, money, power—almost all our energy is used for the learning of how to achieve these aims, and almost none to learn the art of loving.Love means having a responsibility toward the person I love.If I love you,I’m responsive to most of your major needs as a person. This responsibility does not entail my doing for you what you are capable of doing for yourself;nor does it mean than I run your life for you.It does imply acknowledging that what I am and what I do affect you,so that I am directly involved in your happiness and your misery.A lover does have the capacity to hurt or neglect the loved one,and in this sense I see that love rntails an acceptance of some responsibility for the impact my way of being has on you.In the Japanese mind, collectivism is neither a corporate or individual goal to strive for nor a slogan to pursue.Rather the nature of things operates so that nothing of consequence occurs as a result of individual effort.Everything important in life happens as a result of teamwork or collectivie effort. Therefore,to attempt to assign individual credit or blame to results is unfounded.A Japanese professor of accounting,a brilliant scholar trained at Carnegie-Mellon University who teaches now in Tokyo, remarked that the status of accounting system in Japanese industry is primitive compared to those in the Unite States.Profit centres, transfer prices, and computerized information system are barely known even in the largest Japan companies, whereas they are a commonplace in even small Unite States organizations.Though not at all surprised at the difference in accounting system,I was not at all sure that the Japanese were primitive. In fact,I thought their system a good deal more efficient than ours.。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)There's a dreamy atmosphere to Adjuntas, a coffee town in the Valley of the Sleeping Giant high in the mountains of Puerto Rico. A passion for the land and its customs runs through this place, where people say their families have lived “since forever^ and formal good manners rule daily life. You smell it in the surrounding streets, where food is cooked at roadside barbecues. You see it in the graceful horses paraded through town on holidays, and you feel it in the large, elegant square, with its fountains and stone benches.Several decades ago, this love of the land motivated the local people to oppose a massive mining operation. The mountains surrounding Adjuntas are rich with gold, silver, copper, and zinc and the Puerto Rican government had reserved about 30 square miles for mineral exploitation.People fought to protect the land despite the promise of jobs and money. They were saved by growing coffee and selling it throughout Puerto Rico. The profits helped the group persuade the government to transform the mining zone into a national park, El Bosque del Pueblo, which is now protected by law. Opened in 1998, the park runs a reforestation program allowing young and old to plant trees where land has been excavated (挖掘)."We have never learned to man age the forest,” said Tinti Deya, a local resident. ccWe5re like children doing everything for the first time, except in our case we're grandmothers."Grandmothers are everywhere in Adjuntas and they're all respectfully addressed as Dofia. Lala Echevarria, an 85-year-old great-great-grandmother, was born on the oldest street in town, where she still lives in a small home. She grew up before electricity and running water, and remembers when the first car arrived in Adjuntas. "As a child, I used to spend all my time carrying water, finding firewood, looking after the chickens and the cows. ”she said. "There were sixteen of us. We would wash our clothes in the river and we used to cook on an open fire. At meal times, we kids would sit on the floor to eat”Dofi a Lala was working as a maid when she met and married the love of her life, Mariano the mechanic. They had thirteen children and shared 44 years before he died in 1983. She shows me the dozens of photographs of four generations of descendants that now fill her tiny home.56.What can be learned about Adjuntas from the first paragraph?A.The people there have a deep love of it.B.It is the very place where coffee originated.C.The streets are littered with food waste.D.The town is surrounded by barbecue site.57."The profits” (in paragraph 3) refer to the money made from _________.A.protecting the landB. mining valuable metalC. growing and selling coffeeD. transforming the mining zone58.Which of the following statements is true of the reforestation program?A.Grandmothers play a vital role in it.B.Anyone can plant trees in the mining zone.C.It did little to help the building of the national park.D.It was launched to protest against the mining operation.59.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.Respect for grandmothers.B. A local woman's life story.C. Major changes in Adjuntas.D. Dofias' opinion of the town.(B)Experiment with Our FoodWant to cook up a delicious meal? It's not just about the food. We chat to psychologist Prof. Charles Spence about the strange science of gastrophysics. What exactly is ‘astrophysics’?It's a combination of "gastronomy(美食学)" and 'psychophysics', which involves the scientific study of how our experience of food and drink is affected by our senses and our surroundings, not just the food itself. It's a small but growing area of research which brings together psychologists, neuroscientists, marketeers, chefs, product designers, and even musicians. So what kinds of things can affect our sense of taste?Pretty much everything! From the colour and shape of the plates to the weight and material of the cutlery(餐具), through to the shape of the table and the feel of the chair you're sitting on. Then there's the number of people you're with, the mood you're in, the lighting and background music in the restaurant, and memories associated with the food. When you put all these factors together, it adds up a lot. What's the most surprising way in which our taste can be influenced? It's the idea of6sonic seasoning\ which uses sounds to change the taste of food. You can add as much as 15 per cent extra sweetness, sourness, or bitterness to a food simply by playing the right sort of music. We've created music to enhance sweetness and bitterness, and we also have music for sour, and spicy foods. Working with the Michelin-starred chocolatier Dominique Persoone in Belgium, we even showed that if we played "creamy" music in his stores we could add extra creaminess to his chocolate.Neuroscientists have found direct connections in the mouse brain between thesenses of smell and sound, so it might be that this occurs in humans too. Sonic seasoning is already being used to enhance meals in fancy restaurants, but we could also see it being used to benefit health by, for example, playing 'sweet' music so that we're happy with less sugar in our food. What's the most innovative use of gastrophysics you've seen? There's a lot happening in the world of cutlery design. Heston Blumenthal's restaurant The Fat Duck is currently serving a dish called Counting Sheep, which comes with a fluffy (毛茸茸的), weighted spoon that smells of baby powder, designed to enhance the eating experience. We've found that food tends to taste better with heavier cutlery~possibly because we associate weight with quality.60.Which of the following statements is true of gastrophysics?A. It covers different subjects.B. It neglects food to some extent.C. It has been in existence for long.D. It is created by a psychophysicist.61.According to Charles Spence, how can sonic seasoning be used to do good to our health?A.Helping us to be more resistant to the temptation to eat unhealthy food.B.Playing some music to make us feel our food is sweeter than it really is.C.Making experiments with mice to find out what food benefits our health.D.Training human brains to associate certain sounds with a particular flavour.62.Which of the following examples best illustrates the use of gastrophysics?A.A restaurant hires a psychologist to design its layout.B.A restaurant varies the sweetness of its food.C.A restaurant uses heavier plates to serve food.D.A restaurant asks its customers for suggestions.(C)The ocean bottom—a region nearly 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the Earth—is a vast frontier that even today is largely unexplored and uncharted. Until about a century ago, the deep-ocean floor was completely inaccessible, hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,6000 meters deep. Totally without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earth's surface, thedeep-ocean bottom is an unfriendly environment to humans, in some ways as forbidding and remote as outer space.Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks and sediments (沉淀物)for over a century, the first detailed global investigation of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968, with the beginning of the National Science Foundation's Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). Using techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, the DSDP's drill ship, the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a steady position on the ocean's surface and drill in very deep waters, getting samples of sediments and rock from the ocean floor. The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15-year research program that ended in November 1983. During this time, the ship logged 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 core samples of seabed sediments and rocks at 624 drilling sites around the world. The Glomar Challenger's core samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of years ago and to calculate what it will probably look like millions of years in the future. Today5 largely on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challenger's voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate tectonics (构造学)and continental drift that explain many of the geological processes that shape the Earth. The cores of sediment drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also produced information critical to understanding the world's past climates. Deep-ocean sediments provide a climatic record stretching back hundreds of millions of years, because they are largely isolated from the mechanical erosion(腐蚀)and the intense chemical and biological activity that rapidly destroy much land-based evidence of past climates. This record has already provided insights into the patterns and causes of past climatic change—information that may be used to predict future climates.63.The author refers to the ocean bottom as a "frontier" in the first paragraph because________.A.it is not a popular area for scientific researchB.it contains a wide variety of life formsC.it attracts courageous explorersD.it is an unknown territory64.Which of the following is true of the Glomar Challenger?A.It is an ongoing project.B.It is a type of submarine.C.It has gone on over 100 voyages.D.It made its first DSDP voyage in 1968.65.In what way was the Deep Sea Drilling Project significant?A.It was an attempt to find new sources of oil and gas.B.It was the first extensive exploration of the ocean bottom.C.It was composed of geologists from all over the world.D.It was funded entirely by the gas and oil industry.66.Which of the following is mentioned in the passage as being a result of the Deep Sea Drilling Project?A.Geologists observed forms of marine life never before seen.B.Geologists were able to predict the Earth's future appearance.C.Two geological theories became more widely accepted by scientists.rmation was revealed about the disasters that had happened on the Earth.Section CDirections: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. But with more time at home on our hands than ever, a global pandemic(疫情)has really highlighted the things in life that do and don't relate to joy—one of them being our wardrobes(衣橱).I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that over the past few months, the only clothing I have really reached for has been of the mismatched, stretch-cotton variety, worn and re-worn. _________67_________ In the face of fast fashion and alarming landfill rates, we should be proud of giving our clothing a long and appreciative life. But there needs to be a place for joy too. The party dress that feels as fun as it looks, and the tiny impractical handbag that only survives each clear-out because of old memories woven into it... does practicality always have to win out overjoy? As somebody who often struggles to let sentimental(感性的)things go, the minimalist “capsule wardrobe” is one that always gives me a bit of a headache. _________68_________ What if getting rid of that cardigan is associated with forgetting the amazing news I received while I was wearing it? What if those shoes are the perfect fit for my still one-year-old daughter? It can be difficult to know where to limit the exhibits of your own life's museum, or to predict which items will continue to feel like the most keep-worthy version of "you".The answer to most of these things, I've found, is the online second-hand shop. _________69_________ But if you do find yourself needing anything new, second-hand shopping can be an affordable way to buy better quality once instead of cheap on repeat._________70_________ But before you do away with your wardrobe entirely it's important to remember the fashionable person you were before the pandemic, and can be again.IV . Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible. Are Organic Food the Best? Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally(传统方式地)grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods—a term whose meaning varies greatly—frequently claim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others. The growing interest of consumers in the safety and more nutritional quality of the diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been motivated by sweeping claims that the food supply is not safe or adequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the large amount of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for folklore.Almost daily the public is surrounded by claims for “no-aging” diets, new vitamins, and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated (经过熏蒸的)grains and the like. One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is a real cause for concern if consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food and buy and buy only expensive organic foods instead.V. Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others.
The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development.
As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for folklore.
Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new vitamins and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains and the like.
One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foods instead.
Everyone hopes to live happily in the world. Physical exercise is indispensable to a happy life. There is a famous saying: "Life lies on exercise." Although you will not necessarily die without regular physical exercises, they' II certainly help you live longer and more healthily.
Exercise is good for us to build our bodies. It helps co - ordinate the different parts of our bodies when we have sports. For example, we must try our best to co - ordinate the movements of the arms and legs when we play basketball, or we won't be able to shoot the basket. Exercise also benefits our organs. It lets the heart beat faster than usual, and then helps enlarge the blood vessels to protect us from heart attacks.
Exercise can also contribute to the development of our ability to response agilely. For instance, when you play table- tennis, you must try to reflect as quickly as you can so that you may fight back at the right position at the fight moment.
Exercise can also contribute to improving our mood. When you do exercise, you move a lot, and you have to be more active. It helps you become more optimistic.
Exercise will fill your life with various contents and make it more colorful.
What's more, exercise will help you get rid of your inertia. If you keep doing exercise regularly, you will never be a lazy person. Therefore, exercise has great effect on one's character.
In a word, exercise is helpful, important and absolutely necessary.。
