AWhat if the car waiting patiently behind a parked bus is a driverless or autonomous vehicle (AV)?Will this robot car be able to understand what you mean when you flash your lights or madly wave your hands? Its sensors could decide that it's only safe to overtake when there's no oncoming traffic at all.On a busy road at schoolhome time, this may be never leading to increasingly angry passengers and increasingly angry drivers queuing behind. And how will a robot car driving out from a Tjun ction into oncoming traffic be able to make the necessary eye contact with a human driver? These safetyfirst robot cars could become victims of their own politeness and end up being bullied and ignored by aggressive, impatient humans. This, at any rate, is one of the conclusions to be drawn from research carried out by Dr. Chris Tennant of the psychological and behavioral science department at the London School of Economics. His Europewide survey finds that nearly twothirds of drivers think machines won't have enough common sense to interact with human drivers. And more than twofifths think a robot car would remain stuck behind our parked lorry for a long time.“If you view the road as a social space, you will consciously negotiate your journey with other drivers.People who like that negotiation process appear to feel less comfortable engaging with AVs than with human drivers,”says Mr Tennant in his report.Of course, humans are always skeptical about new technologies of which they have little experience. That skepticism usually decreases with usage, however. And even many skeptics accept that emotionless AVs could cause fewer accidents than we humans, with our tendency to road anger, tiredness and lack of concentration.A statistic often repeated is that human error is responsible for more than 90% of accidents. But 70% of the 12,000 people Mr Tennant and his team interviewed agreed that: “As a point of principle, humans should be in control of their vehicles.” An even greater proportion —80% —thought an autonomous vehicle should always have a steering wheel.

(2013·东北三省三校第二次联考,D)Deception (骗术) is something that people do all the time, and it plays an important role in military (事的) strategy. Now some researchers are trying to figure out how to get robots to do it, by looking at the behavior of squirrels and birds. At Georgia Tech, a team led by Ronald Arkin, a professor at the School of Interactive Computing, studied the literature on squirrels hiding their acorns (橡果). Squirrels will hide their food in a certain place, but when they see other squirrels trying to steal from them, they attempt to fool the thieves by running to a false location.Ronald Arkin and his Ph. D. student Jaeeun Shim used that as a model for robot behavior. They programmed the robot into tricking a “predator (捕食者)” machine by doing what a squirrel does: showing the enemy a false location for an important resource. The team also looked at how other animals—in this case, a species of bird called Arabian babbler—drive off predators. A babbler will make an alarm call when they see a predator and other babblers will join the bird and make more calls. They then surround the predator, all the while flapping (拍打) wings and making noises. The babblers don't ever actually fight the animal they want to drive off; they just make enough noises and flaps around enough so that it seems that attacking a babbler isn't worth it.They found that the deception works when the group reaches a certain size—essentially, when enough birds arrive to convince the enemy that it's best to back off. Davis modeled that behavior in software using a military scene and found that it worked even if the group didn't have the firepower to confront the enemy directly. The military is interested in this because a robot that can fool an opponent is a valuable tool. It could lead an enemy down a false trail or make itself look more dangerous than it actually is.

Our Lady's Hospice, the first of its kind in these western islands, has entered the second century of caring for those with terminal illness. It was first opened in Milltown and its opening was the realization of a long cherished() dream. For years people had longed for a place where poor, lonely, friendless dying persons---- no longer fit subjects for hospital wards--- could find care, comfort and peacefulness in their last days of life. In December 1879 these hopes were realized when Our Lady's formally welcomed the first patients---35 in number. So great were the applications for admission that six years later the foundation stone of the present Hospice was laid on 18th July 1886 and completed in August 1888.Much has been written about the spirit of the Hospice and much will continue to be written with present increasing interest in the Hospice movement. Yet it isdifficult to capture a spirit in words. Over a hundred years ago Our Lady's Hospice was opened in spirit that regarded neither race, nor belief, nor class but looked simply to the need of the person for help and for peace in the last days of life. We hope the same spirit born out of love, care and respect for the dignity and worth of each human person, will comfort all, both patients and their loved ones, who seek our help in the Hospice today.77. "their loved ones"in the last sentence refers to ___________.(A) dying patients (B) patients and doctors(C) those whom patients love (D) human persons81. Which of the following is in agreement with the Hospice spirit?(A) Taking care of those seriously-ill people who believe in themselves.(B) Showing love for those who live in these western islands.(C) Freeing white patients from pain and comforting their fears, and supporting their loved ones.(D) Loving and helping those of the terminally ill.DEvery profession, art and science has its technical vocabulary, the function of which is to tell about things or processes which have no names in ordinary English, and to give greater exactness. Such special terms are necessary in discussion and precise in understanding. Besides, they save time, for it is much more economical to name a process than to describe it.Different occupations, however, differ widely in the character of their special vocabularies. In trades like farming and fishery, which have occupied great numbers of native words. Hence, these vocabularies are more familiar in sound and more generally understood. The special terms of law, medicine and philosophy have also become pretty familiar to educated persons, and havecontributed much to the popular vocabulary. Yet every profession still possesses a large body of technical terms that remain essentially foreign, even to educated speech. And the proportion has been much increased in the last 50 years, particularly in the various departments of natural and political science and in the mechanic arts. Here new terms are formed and abandoned()with the greatest freedom. Most of the new terms are used in special discussions, and seldom get into general literature or conversation. Yet no profession is nowadays a close circle. The lawyer, the physician, or the man of science, associates freely with other people, and does not meet them only in a professional way. Furthermore, what is called "popular science"makes everybody familiar with modern views and recent discoveries. Any important experiment, though made in a remote or local laboratory, is at once reported in the newspapers, and everybody is soon talking about it . Thus our common speech is always taking up new technical terms and making them commonplace.82. of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody.Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed. There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “applepolishing”—“softsoaping”or “butteringup”.A gift is just one way to “softsoap”somebody,or to “butter him up”.Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise—telling him how good he looks,or how well he speaks,or how talented and wise he is.Endless are the ways of flattery.Who does not love to hear it?Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is.In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us,who get so little of it.We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it.But if we just lap it up for its food value and nourishment,as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it.A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣).They overpraised him to the skies,as a man of limitless might. He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in.The tide was too busy to listen to him.The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery.21.Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “applepolishing”?A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management.C.A king is said to be of limitless power by his followers.D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.22.What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell’s example?A.Everybody can be an apple polisher.B.Cromwell was not a good apple polisher.C.George Fox and his party were not apple polishers.D.There are people who don’t like being apple polished.23.Which of the following statements about flattery is TRUE according to the author?A.Too much flattery can carry us away.B.Flattery is too empty to do people any good.C.Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(过度的) pride.D.Flattery is one of the ways to applepolish people.24.Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore?A.Because he was sick of his normal life.B.Because he disliked being overpraised any more.C.Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was.D.Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king.BWelcome to France! Here are some places of interest in Paris.Louvre MuseumThe collection of the Louvre Museum Label.27.What’s the closest meaning of the underlined word “enchantment”in the last paragraph?A.Charm. B.Shock.C.Disappointment. D.Puzzle.CThe baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert (警觉).Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze (凝视) starts to lose its focus — until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were showncards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two.The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.28.The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby's ________.A.sense of hearing B.sense of sightC.sense of touch D.sense of smell29.Babies are sensitive to the change in ________.A.the size of cards B.the colour of picturesC.the shape of patterns D.the number of objects30.Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?A.To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.B.To see how babies recognize sounds.C.To carry their experiment further.D.To keep the babies' interest.31.Where does this text probably come from?A.Science fiction.B.Children's literature.C.An advertisement.D.A science report.DWhen asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.For kids, happiness has a magical quality.Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity.I can still recall the excitement ofbeing invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party. In adulthood the things that bring deep joy — love, marriage, birth — also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunchbox and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work.I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we've got to have. We're so selfconscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier.Happiness isn't about what happens to us — it's about how we see what happens to us.It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.32.As people grow older, they ________.A.feel it harder to experience happinessB.associate their happiness less with othersC.will take fewer risks in pursuing happinessD.tend to believe responsibility means happiness33.What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 5 and 6?A.She cares little about her own health.B.She enjoys the freedom of traveling.C.She is easily pleased by things in daily life.D.She prefers getting pleasure from housework.34.What can be inferred from Paragraph 7?A.Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness.B.Psychologists' opinion is well proved by Grandma's case.C.Grandma often found time for social gatherings.D.Grandma's happiness came from modest expectations of life.35.What can be concluded from the passage?A.Happiness lies between the positive and the negative.B.Each man is the master of his own fate.C.Success leads to happiness.D.Happy is he who is content.七选五Being a VolunteerWhat can you do to help people? The answer is—to be a volunteer!36Help yourself by helping othersWhen you volunteer to help others, you are helping yourself.
