However, a great deal of work which addresses qualitative issues concerning 2-D digital filters endowed with overflow nonlinearities remains to be accomplished. We consider the state-space quarter plane model of 2-D digital filters described by
acteristics (cf. Chapter 6). These nonlinearities constitute a generalization of the usual types
of overflow arithmetic employed in practice, including saturation, zeroing, two's complement and triangular overflow arithmetic. In our approach, we do not characterize these nonlinearities by sector conditions; instead, we characterize them by the range of the nonlinear function representing the overflow arithmetic. In Section 7.2, we prove several results for the global asymptotic stability of the null solution of 2-D digital filters described by (7.1) (Theorem 7.1, Corollary 7.1, and Proposition 7.1). In Section 7.3, we establish our main result for the present chapter (Theorem 7.2). We generalize our results to multidimensional cases in Section 7.4 (Theorem 7.3 and Corollary 7.2). We demonstrate the applicability of the present results by means of specific examples in Section 7.5. We conclude this chapter in Section 7.6.

7.1
Introduction
As we discussed in Chapter 5, in the implementation of linear digital filters, signals are usuMly represented and processed in a finite wordlength format. Therefore, such implementations will naturally give rise to several kinds of nonlinear effects, such as overflow and quantization. The stability analysis of 2-D (two-dimensional) as well as multidimensional digital filters subject to such nonlinearities has been of increasing interest in recent years (cf. [1], [2], [7], [8], [64], [69], [1131). Since finite wordlength realizations of digital filters result in systems which inherently are nonlinear, the asymptotic stability of such filters (under zero-input), as in many other nonlinear systems, is of great interest in practice. The global asymptotic stability of the null solution guarantees the non-existence of limit cycles (overflow oscillations) in the realized digital fitters. In this chapter, we establish new results for the global asymptotic stability of zero-input 2-D state-space digital filters with overflow nonlinearities. We do not consider quantization effects in the present chapter. The stability properties of I - D (one dimensional) digital filters subject to overflow nonlinearities have been investigated extensively during the last two decades (el. [6], [7],

In this chapter, we utilize Lyapunov's Second Method to establish new results for the global asymptotic stability of the null solution of the 2-D system (7.1). One of our results generalizes condition (7.3) and shows that the matrix G in (7.3) can be relaxed to certain classes of positive definite matrices. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which positive definite matrices can be used to construct for the 2-D system (7.1) quadratic form Lyapunov functions with the desired property that the overflow nonlinearity never increases the values of these functions. Another result for testing the global asymptotic stability of the null solution for 2-D fixed-point digital filters is given by Bauer and Jury [8] (which is established for the shiftvariant case).
