考试分为综合笔试与口试两个阶段。

The proctors gave us the rules - no cheating, bathrooms only at designated times, etc. With a final motivational "You've got this!" we began the listening portion.The first passage was about American high school culture - homecoming dances, pep rallies, that kind of stuff. I totally blanked on a few of the questions. Ugh, of course they'd pick an topic I knew nothing about! The second recording discussed job interview etiquette and body language. I feel like I did better on that one since my parents have prepped me for future interviews since I was like 5 years old!After a harrowing two hours of listening and furiously bubbling in answers, we finally got a break. I desperately chugged some water and tried to regain my bearings. Deep breaths, Ji-won, deep breaths. I pulled out the granola bar mymom had lovingly packed and scarfed it down for some brain fuel.Then it was time for the speaking portion. We were assigned rooms with individual examiners who would put us through our paces. I got called into my room feeling like I was heading to the executioner! The examiner was a kind-looking older woman with a warm smile. She did her best to make me feel at ease as we went through the various speaking tasks.First up was a basic candidate introduction where I had to describe myself, my hobbies, future goals, etc. Piece of cake, I've practiced this dozens of times! Then we moved into some roleplaying activities. One was asking for restaurant recommendations, another was negotiating the return policy at a store. The examiner was very patient as I fumbled through the scenarios.Then came the hard part - the open-ended sample response section. She described a couple situations in Chinese and I had to respond in English on how I would react or what my opinion was. One was about being asked to participate in a class debate tournament. Another asked for my thoughts on homework policies. I struggled to quickly organize my thoughts into coherent English sentences. My palms were sweating like crazy!After what felt like an eternity, she gave me a warm "xiexie" and I was finally done! I practically sprinted out of there, gulping down the fresh air of freedom. My brain felt like an overworked CPU about to burst into flames!Now it's just a waiting game until the scores come out. Part of me wants to know right away how I did, while another part never wants to think about that exam again! Whatever the result, I gave it my best shot.Looking back, it was definitely a valuable experience that will help me in the future. The exam pushed me to synthesize everything I've learned about English listening and speaking into real practical use. While exhausting, it felt like a key milestone in gauging my current skill level and motivating me to continue improving.At the end of the day, the exam made it crystal clear that English proficiency is so vital in our globalized world.
