——黄炎培Reading(p 30-31)Work to live, live to work为了生活而工作,为了工作而生活If you were asked the question. “Do you work to live or live to work?”, what would your answer be? Some might say that we work because we have to, not least because we need the salary that enables us to be financially independent. It is certainly true that most of us do join the labour force once our studies are completed. Indeed, it could be argued that our education geared towards preparing us for a life of work. However, earning living is by no means the only reason why we work—there are other important reasons that motivate us to enter the world of work.

Title: The Significance of Knowledge and Skills。
Knowledge and skills are two indispensable elementsthat shape individuals' success and contribute to the advancement of society. In this essay, we will delve into the importance of both knowledge and skills, explore their interplay, and discuss how they collectively drive personal and societal development.Firstly, let's dissect the concept of knowledge. Knowledge encompasses the understanding, information, and awareness acquired through learning, experience, or education. It serves as the foundation upon which individuals build their capabilities and make informed decisions. Knowledge empowers individuals to navigate through various challenges, solve complex problems, and adapt to changing circumstances. Furthermore, knowledge fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, which are essential for innovation and progressin all spheres of life.On the other hand, skills refer to the practical abilities, competencies, and proficiencies acquired through practice, training, and application of knowledge. Skills are the tools that individuals utilize to translate theoretical understanding into tangible actions and outcomes. Whether it's technical expertise in a specific field, interpersonal communication skills, or leadership abilities, skills enable individuals to effectively execute tasks, collaborate with others, and achieve desired objectives. Moreover, honing skills not only enhances individual performance but also contributes to collective productivity and efficiency within organizations and communities. The relationship between knowledge and skills is symbiotic. While knowledge provides the theoretical framework and conceptual understanding, skills serve as the means to apply and utilize that knowledge effectively. In other words, knowledge without practical skills may remain dormant and underutilized, whereas skills without a solidfoundation of knowledge may lack depth and sustainability. Therefore, fostering a balance between acquiring knowledge and developing skills is paramount for personal growth and professional success. In today's rapidly evolving world, where technological advancements and globalization redefine the landscape of work and life, the demand for both knowledge and skills is ever-increasing. Traditional academic knowledge alone may no longer suffice in the face of dynamic challenges and emerging opportunities. Similarly, possessing technical skills without the ability to adapt, innovate, and communicate effectively may limit one's potential for advancement in a competitive environment. Therefore, individuals need to embrace a lifelong learning mindsetthat emphasizes continuous acquisition of knowledge and refinement of skills to stay relevant and thrive in the21st century. Moreover, the significance of knowledge and skills extends beyond individual development to societal progress.A knowledgeable and skilled workforce drives economicgrowth, fosters innovation, and enhances global competitiveness. Countries that prioritize investment in education, vocational training, and lifelong learning initiatives tend to have higher productivity levels, lower unemployment rates, and greater social mobility. Furthermore, knowledge-sharing and skill-transfer mechanisms facilitate collaboration, cross-cultural understanding, and sustainable development on a global scale. In conclusion, knowledge and skills are inseparable pillars of personal and societal advancement. While knowledge provides the theoretical understanding and intellectual capacity, skills enable individuals to translate that knowledge into practical actions and outcomes. Embracing a holistic approach that emphasizes continuous learning, skill development, and innovation is essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world and driving positive change. By harnessing the synergies between knowledge and skills, individuals can unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the progress of society.。

Text
The old saying, “practice makes perfect” is only partially correct. It is very much true that the more you practice something, the easier it will become. However, there is not necessarily a relationship between how often you practice and how well you execute a given skill. It is entirely possible for you to learn a skill incorrectly, or to introduce bad habits and poor form into a skill you spend a lot of time practicing. Bad habits or poor form may endanger you at a later time.

Learning Knowledge and Skill: Practice
Knowledge can be studied, but skills you desire to learn or improve must be practiced. You have to practice — to do — skills in order to learn them. Skills you can learn include: how to speak in public, how to build a house or fix a leaky faucet, how to make a web page, how to ask out someone on a date, and how to cook a meal. You can learn such skills or others in a class or group, or from a description printed in a book or web page — but they won’t help you and you won’t learn them unless you practice them.
2. Have you ever had any experience of stage fright? If yes, please share one with the class.
I still remember the first time I attended the English Speech Contest in the first college year. With so many teachers and fellow students sitting before me, I felt so nervous that I forgot what I was going to say. The whole audience gave me a loud applause to cheer for me, and after almost 30 seconds, I went on with my speech. Except for that pause, I did it very well and won the second prize.
