In a history book.C. In a novel.D. In a scientific report.BWhen I left my country Trinidad and Tobago for China to study Chinese language and culture, never in my wildest imagination did I think that twenty-one years later I would still be here. Two decades is a long time, yet I often tell my friends that it feels like only two years. That is because China is an exciting place to be with lots of opportunities for begetters or those who seek adventure. It so happens that I fall into both categories. At first, I was not sure whether I would like my experience in China, so I initially planned to study for only one year when I left Trinidad for Beijing. But as fate would have it, I fell in love with China, its people, and its culture. I extended my course for another three years to learn all I could about this fascinating country, Being in China has allowed me the rare chance to meet many distinguished people. It has also allowed me to do things which I think I would not otherwise have had the chance to do.Years later, I published my first book, “The Emperor, His Bride and the Dragon Robe. " However, to my unexpected delight, this book was officially presented to China as one of state gifts. My mother, full of exhilaration, told me that it was televised on the local news. To this day, I feel highly honored. Among my to-do list is a musical play for children based on the book. Through this book and the play, I hope to share my love for China and engender in children around the world a similar love for Chinese culture.I believe people should have dreams no matter how big or small. However, most importantly, I believe that people must strive to make more opportunities for themselves to fulfill their dreams rather than wait around for a few opportunities to come along by chance. In this regard, I like to use one of Francis Bacon's quotes: "A wise man will create more opportunities than he finds. ”4.Why does two decades feel like only two years to the author?A.Because he has been seeking for opportunities and strive for his dream.B.Because China is an exciting place with lot of opportunities.C.Because he has many friends who are always with him.D.Because he has a fancy for China its people, and its culture.5.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.The author was certain he would fall for the experience in China.B.After studying for four years in China, the author fell in love with it.C.It was rare for the author to meet distinguished people in China.D.Being in China, the author has done things which he couldn't do in his hometown.6.What does the underlined word "engender" in paragraph 3 mean?A.Spread.B. Arouse.C. Conclude.D. Emit.7.What is the best title for the passage?A.My Love for ChinaB.My Special Experience in ChinaC.Ambition is the Key to the SuccessD.China, a Dream Man's ResortCMelanie Clap ham has spent the last three years catching images of grizzlies (灰熊) at Knight Inlet, on the B.C. coast, using small camera traps housed in metal and attached securely to the forest branches.Three years and thousands of images later, the behavioral researcher and postdoctoral student at the University of Victoria has partnered with two software developers living in Silicon Valley and a grizzly research centre in Alaska to develop facial recognition technology used to identify the bears."They don't have distinctive markings on their bodies, n said Clap ham, whose interest in this technology sprang from the need to "identify and recognize individual bears over time" as part of her behavioral research over the last 11 years.Bears grow and shrink a lot depending on the season, and their appearance changes frequently during their 20-to 25-year-long lifespans. Clap ham began to wonder if AJ. might be able to solve her problem in the same way the technology recognize people's faces. Now, she says, the open-source Bear ID software can be used and adapted by anyone and could have huge hints for understanding the animals* behaviour and avoiding bear-human encounters. In relation to the technology based on human facial recognition, Ed Miller and his partner Mary Nguyen are the software developers from California who connected with Clap ham in an online forum for conservation technology in late 2024.The pair were looking for photos of bears ”for fun" as a way to learn more about recognition software, and so they connected with Clap ham to offer their expertise (专业学问) in adapting artificial intelligence."The technology Pete using is based on the same software used to recognize humans, n said Miller, who added that human identification is far easier, as there are millions of images the software can learn from.We need lots of images of individual animals to tell the system which bear is which, ” said Clap ham, who explained "deep learning" as the process where the software trains itself to recognize certain bears more accurately with more pictures it gets. Clamshell says Beard currently has an 84 percent accuracy rate. This is especially important, given that a bear will look dramatically different throughout the year as its appearance, especially fur and weight, changes a lot.8.What is Clamp's purpose of catching images of grizzlies?A.To monitor the changes of some specific bears.B.To collect data for facial recognition technology.C.To finish his postdoctoral research.D.To meet his interest in the technology.9.What do we know about Clap ham?A.Clap ham uses Al to track bears.B.Clap ham has been in her behavioral research for about 25 years.C.Clap ham cooperates with others to identify the bears.D.Clap ham majors in software developing at the University of Victoria.10.Why did Ed Miller and his partner contact Clap ham?A.They provided her with their specific knowledge in Al.B.They wanted to know more about Al.C.They were eager to attend the online forum.D.They were using the same Bear ID software.11.What is the purpose of this text?A.To call on more people to protect grizzlies.B.To describe the living habits of grizzlies.C.To introduce the technology used to identify grizzlies.D.To record a friendship between Melanie and her partners.DCalifornia likes to think of itself as the state where the future happens, and in 2008, its voters decided the future was high-speed rail. So they approved a $9 billion bond issue to begin an incredible government infrastructure project: a bullet train connecting San Francisco and Los- Angeles, at a cost of $33 billion. For years, the optimists have imagined Californians will travel quickly, comfortably and environmentally between the state*s two major population centers. The pessimists, meanwhile, have watched the project costs a lot. At last count, the estimates had traveled up to $75 billion, even were still climbing. On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin News om (D ) in his state speech called for the state to transform the project to a less costly rail that would run through the Central Valley, which attracted voters' elsewhere attention, because what happened in California illustrates the fact that any U.S. rail project may take a risk.Distance. In other places of the world, major population centers are much closer to each other. And big cities that are reasonably close together is pretty much an essential condition for high-speed rail, which is why they have it and we don't. Imagine what it would take to build a line from New York City to Los Angeles 一 or to Chicago, Houston or Phoenix.Wealth. Of course, the United States does have a few cities that look ripe for rail. And instead of high-speed rail between these cities, we have the express, which takes eight hours to travel from Washington to Boston. Why haven't we built something better? Because truly high-speed rail needs to travel in a fairly straight line. Building newer, better, straighter rail lines would require the government to buy all the land between Point A and Point B and tear down anything that happened to be in the way. However, what's between Point A and Point B is a great deal of highly valuable real estate that will be very expensive to purchase.California displays all these problems totally. The part of the rail line that was reasonably cheap to build didn't go anywhere near where the people were ; it ran through the Central Valley where land was reasonably cheap and the lobbies wererelatively few.12.In paragraph 1, the author intends toA.prove the point of the passageB.explain a government projectC.introduce a topic for discussionD.present the background information13.What do we know about the bullet train project?A.All people are not in favor of the bullet train project.B.The cost of the project is approximately 75 billion.C.Other states have to risk building their own bullet program.D.The project will make Americans travel rapidly, cozily and environmentally.14.What mainly leads to bullet train program's failure?ernors in California tend to leave the project behind.B.The distance is the main reason to limit the bullet project in America.C.None of cities in America can afford to build a bullet train.D.Bullet train is not as popular as express in America.15.What attitude does the author hold towards the high-speed rail in California?A. Indifferent.B. Neutral.C. Negative.D. Optimistic.其次节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)依据短文内容,从短文中的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, China's largest e-commerce vendor, has officially confirmed it will hold an initial public offering in the United States, the company has announced. The decision will "make [Alibaba] a more global company and enhance the company’s transparency, as well as allow the company to continue to pursue our long-term vision and ideals," according to a company statement sent on Sunday to China Daily. It did not specify which bourse it will choose to float its shares, or give a detailed timetable. Alibaba said that, should circumstances permit in the future, it will work towards toward extending its public status in China’s capital market in order to share its growth with the Chinese people. The company also expressed gratitude towards those in Hong Kong who have supported Alibaba Group, including the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which shut the door on a potential listing last September. "We respect the viewpoints and policies of Hong Kong and will continue to pay close attention to and support the process of innovation and development of Hong Kong," the statement added. Hong Kong regulators rejected Alibaba's IPO because of the firm's special request to keep a shareholder structure which would have allowed a group of top managers and founders to nominate and control the company's board of directors. The unique requirement went against the exchange's one-share-one-vote principle. The statement puts an end to rampant rumors about Alibaba’s choice of listing venue. For example, the firm's recent purchase of a stake in a Hong Kong-listed company prompted speculation that Alibaba might use the deal to go public. Analysts polled by Reuters have put Alibaba's market value at around $140 billion and the value of the IPO at $15 billion. If successful, it will go public in the world's biggest listing since Facebook Inc's debut in 2012. The announcement came just two days after micro-blogging service Sina Weibo filed to raise $500 million via a US IPO. Alibaba holds 18 percent of Sina Weibo's shares.

IPO?Arm Soars 25% in the Year's Biggest Initial Public OfferingBy Erin Griffith and Don ClarkCall it Wall Street's Groundhog Day. When shares of Arm, the British chip designer, began trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange on Thursday in the year's biggest initial public offering, investors, tech executives, bankers and start-up founders were watching closely for how it performed. They quickly got their answer: It was an early spring. Arm's shares opened trading at $56.10, up 10 percent from its initial offering price of $51. Shares quickly soared further, rising 25 percent by the end of trading to close at $63.59 and giving the company a valuation of $67.9 billion. That stands out in a year that has been the worst for I.P.O.s since 2009. Arm is a particularly interesting test of the public market because it provides an essential technology that is geopolitically and strategically coveted, which also means it faces challenges.Founded in 1990 in Cambridge, England, the company sells blueprints of a part of a chip known as a processor core. Its customers include many of the world's largest tech companies, like Apple, Google, Samsung and Nvidia.Arm's chip designs are primarily used in smartphones, but the company has pitched itself as able to ride the wave of artificial intelligence sweeping Silicon Valley. Many A.I. companies need the most advanced computer chips to do the sophisticated calculations required to develop the tech.【词汇过关】请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。

Part1时事热点(2024·北京房山·一模)The beginning of the Year of the Dragon has foreshadowed a “Song of Ice and Fire” with the emergence of Sora, a text-to-video AI model. Videos generated by Sora display strong consistency when it comes to characters and backgrounds, and support continuous shots of up to 60 seconds, including highly detailed settings and multiple camera angles. 1 However, film insiders noted that currently, AI-generated 60-second videos cannot support the creation of a full-length movie, and the idea that AI tools will “bomb” the film and television industry is so far unfounded. Meanwhile, experts say not to worry excessively, as the integration of AI will help optimize certain occupations, attract more innovative talents and bring new possibilities to the film and television industry. 2From the age of film stock to the digital age, from practical effects to digital effects, from 2D to 3D, Sora, like any technological revolution in the century-long history of film, will improve production efficiency, update production and may even create new genres and trends in filmmaking. 3 Students learning film production can view Sora as a helpful assistant to unleash their sci-fi imagination.Facing the panic signals that AI tools will threaten the global film industry, film insiders argued that the fundamental DNA of film is art and that human creativity cannot be replaced. 4 Many directors, screenwriters, and actors achieve great works by continuously integrating personal emotions and life experiences. This kind of individual creativity cannot be imitated by machines like Sora.5 However, just as the invention of printing did not replace literature or the invention of photography did not replace painting, Sora and its subsequent updates and upgrades will not replace film because the core of these art forms is creativity, which is a unique aspect of human thought.A.With OpenAI’s iteration speed, producing AI videos dozens of minutes long is not far off. B.It is also likely to be incorporated into film and television education and training in the future. C.Film and television are closely linked to technological advancements, which stimulate creativity.D.Sora will undoubtedly prompt changes in existing industrial production and may even replacesome jobs.E.Sora is undoubtedly “more of an opportunity than a challenge” for the global film and television industry.F.Creativity and film production requires the integration of emotional experiences and individual memories.G.This implies that with just a text description, ordinary people using Sora may be able to become “great directors”.(2023·陕西西安·一模)Do you sometimes wish there was a quick and easy way to do your homework? Well a new artificial intelligence technology has been released and people are concerned that it could lead to students cheating on their work.ChatGPT is an online service which can not only answer questions but also write realistic school essays just like humans. 6 .But what exactly is ChatGPT and how could it affect the future of homework? ChatGPT was released late last year by company OpenAI, which was founded by Elon Musk. 7 , answering questions from the user. The online chatbot has been trained on lots of information and data from the internet -it can have a human-like conversation answering questions, admitting mistakes and rejecting any inappropriate questions.Experts say it can be used to write essays, stories, poems and even solve computer coding.8 , which OpenAI admit. Sometimes it writes answers which are incorrect or don’t make sense, and it occasionally guesses what the user has asked it, rather than asking more follow-up questions to understand the question better. What are people saying about it?9 . Some think students might use it to cheat whereas others think they should use the tool in the classroom to help children learn.10 . They argue that, just like when the calculator or Google were created, people were unsure at first, but if teachers introduce the technology and teach pupils the benefits but also the downfalls that could help their learning. There are the problems with ChatGPT. Built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 family of large language models, it engages in human-like dialogue directed by prompting (提示). 11ChatGPT has numerous potential uses. But from a scientific point of view, there is a need to closely watch the development of technologies like ChatGPT before reaching a conclusion about their impacts. 12 So we should not fear ChatGPT will take up humans’ jobs overnight.ChatGPT’s performance is being improved. 13 However, it still has a long way to go to completely imitate the human mind and language competence. When it comes to professional writing, ChatGPT’s answers at times seem reasonable but actually incorrect or meaningless. It might give some good answers to general questions, yet it is no substitute for professional advice.14 It is a kind of groundbreaking research, but its potential risks have not been thoroughly studied. It is still a new technology that we need to study, but should not over-rate (高评). It’s even unwise to blindly commit huge amounts of money to further develop ChatGPT, because it may not turn out to be successful and create bubbles in the high-tech market.China has developed its own large-scale language models, such as Huawei’s Pangu NLP models, Baidu’s ERNIE, Tencent’s HUNYUAN NLP models, and Alibaba’s AliceMind. 15 China needs more special models in specific fields, such as the modern Chinese language, ancient Chinese language, minority languages, and dialects, to break the language barrier among people. Below we take a closer look the possible dangers of artificial intelligence.Job losses due to AI automationAI-powered job automation is a pressing concern as the technology is adopted in industries like marketing, manufacturing and healthcare. Eighty-five million jobs are expected to be lost to automation between 2020 and 2025. 17 And while it’s true that AI will create new jobs, many employees who won’t have the skills could get left behind.Social control through AI algorithms (算法)TikTok runs on an AI algorithm that fill a user’s feed with content related to previous media they’ve viewed on the platform. Criticism of the app targets this process and the algorithm’s failure to filter out harmful and inaccurate content, raising doubts over Tik Tok, ability to protect its users from dangerous and misleading media. 18 So it really leads to a situation where you literally cannot believe your own eyes and ears.19Blue-collar workers have experienced wage declines as high as 70 percent because of automation. On the other hand, white-collar workers have remained largely untouched. From this sense, if the trend continues, the existing social and economic gaps between different races and classes will be further widened. Weakening ethics and goodwill If mankind’s so-called technological progress were to become an enemy of the common good, this would lead to a heavy blow to modern civilization. The rapid rise of the conversational AI tool ChatGPT gives these concerns more substance. It is good for our vocabulary and literacy skills, teaching us math or science concepts and helping us learn history. Apart from those, reading has another benefit. Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character’s suffering? If so, that is because you have empathy (共情) for the character. 21 Research shows that human brains react differently to stories and facts. 22 In addition, your brain thinks you are in the story, which means you experience the characters’ thoughts as if they were real.23 This skill, called emotional intelligence (EI), can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. Research shows that building this intelligence can lead to greater tolerance. One study found that people who read the Harry Potter novels, which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil, were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民).This theory of EI has been put into practice in schools. After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class, a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war, students in St Michael’s High School were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization — Refugee Action.2425 Not only are we more likely to engage in helpful behaviors when we feel empathy for other people, but others are also more likely to help us when they experience empathy.
Chinese inte rnet giant Alibaba has filed documents for a public share sale in the US, which is widely expected to be one of the biggest in history.

In its filing, the company said it was seeking to raise $1bn. But that figur e is seen just as an estimate to calculate various fees.
Analysts expect it to raise more than $15bn and top Facebook's share sale.
Alibaba did not disclose details of the number of shares it intends to sell or their p rice range.
It also did not reveal which US exchange - the Nas daq or New York Stock Exchange - it is looking to list its shares on.
Smartphone growth
Founded 15 years ago by Jack Ma, the firm has been a dominant force in e-commerce in China and is now the biggest online retailer in the country.
While it has been a key playe r in the sector for many yea rs, its filing gave investors the first glimpse at the firm's finances.
The firm generated revenues of 40.5bn yuan in the nine months to the end of December 2013, making a net profit of $2.9bn.
The documents reveal that last ye ar, the value of all merchandise sold on Alibab a's various platforms was $248bn, with more than 11.3 billion orders placed.
The total val ue of merchandise sold on its platforms last year was more than that sold on Amazon and eBay combined.
In a nod to the importance of smartphones, the firm said it was responsible for 72% of mobile commerce in China.
That is importa nt as Alibaba has been locked in competition recently with rival Tencent - China's largest internet firm - to attract mobile shoppers.
Analysts said there was likely to be keen interest in the share sale as investors hope the firm will be able to replicate its success in China on a global scale.
"If it is able to transport that kind of power to outside China, it has the potential to become a true global e-commerce powerhouse," said Roger Entner, lead analyst and founder of Recon Analytics.。
