Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneEver since Stephanie’s 13th birthday we have been receiving comments from other adults expressing their sympathies because our daughter is now a teenager. We’ve heard everything from, “ Sure she’s a good kid, but just wait, now that she’s a teenager ...” to the ever inspiring, “Well, all kids are rotten when they are teenagers, just try to go through it the best way you can.” What’s more upsetting is that many of these insensitive adults feel the need to share their negative predictions well within the hearing of both our daughters. I know that teenagers can be moody and difficult at times, but I’m 32 and I can also be difficult and moody. We worry about the future and want today’s kids to know that we care for them and that there are opportunities that await them. However, at the very point they set out on that journey toward adulthood we stand there watching them disapprovingly, just waiting for them to make a mistake, “just like we knew they would.” We tell them to respect themse lves and to say no to drugs, yet we fail to set a positive example by treating them with kindness and consideration, demonstrating our respect for them. I have, at times, beenguilty of this behavior but am now realizing that the more I see each person as a person, the more I am pleasantly surprised in some way or another. For example, a few weeks ago my husband and I were having dinner at our favorite restaurant and two teenage boys came in and sat down right beside us. I must admit that my first thought w as, “Perfect, there goes our quiet, peaceful dinner.” I was so wrong! These young men were well behaved, quiet, and left a nice tip for the waitress. Once I looked beyond the jeans so loose they were practically falling off and the multi-colored hair, I saw what fine people these kids were. Many of the people who, perhaps unknowingly, treat teens with disrespect are unhappyabout the fact that pop singers and sports stars are our children’s heroes. I feel that unless we give them something better to go af ter, we really shouldn’t complain.41. When their children reach their teens, parents usually expect ______.A. troubleB. sympathyC. congratulationsD. inspiring comments42. In the author’s opinion, the trouble with parents is that ______.A. they are too watchful of their teenage childrenB. they are too concerned about their children’s futureC. they fail to treat teenagers with sufficient kindness and respectD. they speak ill of their children within their hearing43. When two teenagers came into the restaurant and sat beside the author, her first thought was ______.A. her quiet dinner with her husband would be ruinedB. something interesting was going to happen over dinnerC. they were wrong to have chosen this restaurant for dinnerD. she and her husband were going to have a pleasant surprise44. What does the author think of the two teenage boys?A. They are typical of teenagers who wear ill-fitting clothes and dye their hair.B. They may become nice people if they are willing to change their lifestyle.C. They are fine young men despite their loose jeans and multi-colored hair.D. They will respect you if you respect them.45. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. There is nothing wrong with teenagers admiring pop singers and sport stars.B. Pop singers and sport stars should not be heroes of our children.C. If our children admire pop singers and sports stars, it is the parents who are to blame.D. Parents should set a good example for their children to follow.Passage TwoMore and more, the operations of our businesses, governments, and financial institutions are controlled by information that exists only inside computer memories. Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his own purposes can reap big reward. Even worse, a number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get away without punishment. It’s easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers. Of course, we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it’s disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who have been caught may have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck.Unlike other lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment, demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits. All too often, their demands have been met. Why? Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled (篡改) the most confidential (保密) records right under the noses of the company’s executiv es, accountants, and security staff. And so another computer criminal departs with just the recommendations he needs tocontinue his crimes elsewhere.46. It can be concluded from the passage that ______.A. it is still impossible to detect computer crimes todayB. people commit computer crimes at the request of their companyC. computer criminals escape punishment because they can’t be detectedD. computer crimes are the most serious problem in the operation of financial institutions47. It is implied in the third paragraph that ______.A. most computer criminals who are caught blame their bad luckB. the rapid increase of computer crimes is a troublesome problemC. most computer criminals are smart enough to cover up their crimesD. many more computer crimes, which are discovered, go undetected48. Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passage?A. A strict law against computer crimes must be enforced.B. Companies usually hesitate to uncover computer crimes to protect their reputation.C. Companies will guard against computer crimes to protect their reputation.D. Companies need to impose restrictions on confidential information.49. What may happen to computer criminals once they are caught?A. With a bad reputation they can hardly find another job.B. They may walk away and easily find another job.C. They will be denied access to confidential records.D. They must leave the country to go to jail.50. The passage is mainly about ______.A. why computer criminals are often able to escape punishmentB. why computer crimes are difficult to be detected by systematic inspectionsC. how computer criminals mange to get good recommendations from their former EmployersD. why computer crimes can’t be eliminatedPassage ThreeAnother cultural aspect of nonverbal communication is one that you might not think about: space. Every person perceives himself to have a sort of invisible shield surrounding his physical body. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he bumps onto someone, he feels obligated to apologize. But the size of a person’s “comfort zone” depends on his cultural ethnic origin. For example, in casual conversation, many Americans stand about four feet apart. In other words, they like to keep each other “at arm’s length”, people in Latin or Arab cultures, in contrast, stand very close to each other, and touch each other often. If someonefrom one of those cultures stands too close to an American while in conversation, the American may feel uncomfortable and back away. When Americans are talking, they expect others to respond to what they are saying. To Americans, polite conversationalists empathize by displaying expressions of excitement or disgust, shock or sadness. People with a “poker face”, whose emotions are hidden by a deadpan expression, are looked upon with suspicion. Americans also indicate their attentiveness in a conversation by raising their eyebrows, nodding, smiling politely and maintaining good eye contact. Whereas some cultures view direct eye contact as impolite or threatening, Americans see it as a sign of genuineness and honesty. If a person doesn’t look you in the eye, American might say, you should question his motives—or assume that he doesn’t like you. Yet with all the concern for eye contact, Americans still consider staring—especially at strangers—to be rude.51. What the author discussed in the previous section is most probably about______.A. classification of nonverbal communicationB. the reasons why people should think about spaceC. the relationship between communication and spaceD. some other cultural aspects of nonverbal communication52. How far people keep to each other while talking is closely associated with their______.A. cultural originB. habitsC. customD. nationality53. When an Italian talks to an Arabian on informal occasions______.A. he stands about four feet awayB. “comfort zone” does not existC. keeping close enough is preferredD. communication barriers may emerge54. A “poker face” (Line 3, Para. 2) refers to a face w hich is______.A. attentiveB. emotionalC. suspiciousD. expressionless55. In a conversation between friends, Americans regard it as sincere and truthful to____.A. maintain direct eye contactB. hide emotions with a deadpan expressionC. display excitement or disgust, shock or sadnessD. raise their eyebrows, nod and smile politelyPassage FourAfter the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report; the damage and death toll (死亡人数) could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25, 000 victims. Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despit e the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (蓝图的) for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports, called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.56. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that______.A. new computers had been installed in the buildingsB. it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD. improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways57. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______.A. counter-balance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC. help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD. measure the impact of an earthquake’s vibrations58. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ______.A. would cause serious financial problemsB. would be worthwhile though costlyC. would increase the complexity of architectural designD. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes59. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB. the development of flexible building materialsC. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD. early forecasts of earthquakes60. The author’s main purpose in wr iting the passage is to______.A. compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B. encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computersC. outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materialsD. report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildingPart III Cloze ( 1 x 20 )Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. Y ou should decide on the best choice, and write it in the brackets “【】”.Passage 1Procrastination(犹豫不决) is a disease of the mind. A scientific study in recent years has shown that it is a close relative of sadness and attention disorder; that procrastinators tend to be the result of low self-confidence and are likely to experience anxiety. The research has shown, what is more, that the illness has become quite common.Susan Robert, a behavioral psychologist who has written a book called Living With Procrastination, says that about a quarter of the adult population of the United States and Canada report having serious problems with procrastination. “when we say …serious‟we mean people for whom procrastination causes great discomfort and suffering. We‟ve found that such people are more troubled by daily life than others, that possibility of anxiety is much higher among them than in the rest of the population.”In a society driven by achievement, it is little wonder that not being able to work at full steam will bring people sadness. Surely, in the land of opportunity, this anxiety has produced an industry of experts offering solutions. Many books and specialist solutions have appeared. In exchange for $19.95, Dr. Jerome Murray will send out an audio-cassette called “Protect your future from the thief of procrastination.”Dr. Murray promises that if you follow his step-by-step rules you will be empowered to “turn self-defeat into self-realization”. “Since the start of the 1990s, procrastination has been taken more and more seriously,”said Dr. Roberts, who has been treating patients troubled by the condition for more than 20 years. “It is now recognized as a true mental health problem and is being seen more as a psychological problem and less as a moral issue.”41.What is the main topic of this passage?A. Don‟t hesitate to give up smoking.B. Don‟t regard depression as not important.C. The parrot is an extraordinary bird that can be taught to talk, can be easily cared for, and can create a lively atmosphere anywhere. With the help of an energetic parrot owner, a parrot can develop an enormous vocabulary. In addition, a parrot can be trained to say “Pretty boy”or “Polly wants a cracker,”and it also can learn to whistle or sing. No matter what an owner decides to teach a bird, training a parrot takes much patience, but the reward is a stream of chatter. Another reason for the parrot‟s popularity is that this pet does not require much care. For example, even a spoiled parrot does not need a house-sitter for the purpose of daily walks and daily feeding. In fact, a parrot owner may leave his or her pet with enough food for five days and have no fear that the parrot will overeat. Still another advantage of owning a parrot is its inexpensive food, including seeds, nuts, corn, and grain-along with an apple, banana, or carrot. Perhaps the most likely reason the parrot is becoming such a well-liked pet is that it is a combination of tameness and wildness. Because the parrot can live in almost any environment, it makes a fine, tame companion for many people. In addition, because it can be easily trained, it is a delightful performer. At the same time, its colorful feathers give it an air of the mystery of the parrot‟s native home, the jungle. Thus, the parrot, once a highly valued gift presented to kings and noble families, is now appreciated by a growing number of people.46.A parrot can be trained to do all the following but________.A.talkB.help its ownerC.singD.create a lively atmosphere47.Which of the following is not a reason for the easy raising of the parrot?A.It eats very little.B.Its food is inexpensiveC.It does not need a house-sitter.D.It does not require daily walks as dogs do.48.The word “tameness”in the passage means ______.A.the quality of being brave or unafraidB.the quality of being kind or warm-heartedC.the quality of being uncontrolled or fierceD.the quality of being gentle or trained49. The word “jungle”probably means ______.A.boundless desert with very little plant lifeB.large apartment building with pleasing surroundingsC.wild land overgrown with thick bushes and treesD.snow-covered mountain top in very cold areas50. The writer ______.A.likes the parrotB.dislikes the parrotC.does not like nor dislike the parrotD.values the parrot highlyPassage 3In my long life I have seen many changes in our habits and customs and conditions in general. I think that you might be interested if I told you some of them. The world I entered at the age of eighteen when I became a medical student was a world that knew nothing of such advanced things as planes, films, radios or telephones. It was a very cheap world. Prices were stable. When I entered St. Thomas‟hospital I rent a set of rooms in Vincent square for which I paid 18 shillings a week. My landlady provided me with a very good breakfast before I went to the hospital and a dinner when I came back at half past six. I only had to pay for the breakfasts and dinners twelve shillings a week. For four-pence I lunched at St. Thomas‟ on bread and butter and a glass of milk. I was able to live very well, pay my fees, buy my necessary instruments, clothe myself, and have a lot of fun on fourteen pounds a month. And I could always pawn my microscope for three pounds.I spent five years at St. Thomas‟ hospital. I was a bad student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it. I wanted, I had always wanted to be a writer, and in the evenings, after my dinner, I wrote and read. Before long, I wrote a novel called “Liza of Lambeth”, which I sent to a publisher and was accepted. It came out during my last year at the hospital and it was successful. It was of course an accident, but I didn‟t know that. I felt I could afford to give up medicine and make writing my profession; so, three days after I graduated from the school of medicine, I left for Spain to write another book, I did not realize, at that time, that I was taking a great risk.51. The text is a talk given by the writer when____.A. he was 18B. his first novel was publishedC. he graduated from the school of medicineD. he was at an advanced age52. The writer graduated from the school of medicine when he was____.A. 18 C. 23B. 28 D. 3053. “A nd I could always pawn my microscope for three pounds”means the writer could always____.A. exchange his microscope for three poundsB. borrow his microscope and pays three poundsC. have his microscope repaired with three poundsD. lend his microscope for three pounds54. In the sentence “I was able to live very well, pay my fees, buy my necessary instruments, clothe myself...”, the word “clothe” means____.A. wear clothesB. make clothes forC. wash clothes forD. buy clothes for55. The writer wanted to be a writer because____.A. he liked to take risksB. he found it easier to make a living by writingC. he was interesting in writingD. he could not study medicine wellPassage 4How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Y outh is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addtion, life is always presenting new things to the child---things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parens, he may go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.56.People can experience happiness if they___.A. always thinks of the past and regret itB. value the presentC. are no longer youngD. become old and have much experience57.When people were young, they used to___.A. be in charge of many businessesB. have few things to think about and take onC. look after their younger sisters and brothersD. face a lot of difficulties58.The pains of children lie in the fact that___.A. no one helps them make right decisionB. they are often beaten by their parentsC. they can not be accepted and praised by othersD. they are not allowed to do what they like to do59.Children are usually happy because___.A. old people lose interest in themB. they are free to do wrongC. they are familiar with everything going on around themD. things are new to them60.Which of the following is NOT needed for a young man to be happy?A. Eachpassage is followed by some questions or incompletestatements. For each of them there are 4 choicesmarked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the bestchoice, and write it in the brackets “【】”..Passage 1Advertising follows us everywhere. Whenever we turn on the television, listen to the radio or open a newspaper or magazine, we are bombarded with advertisements. They invite us to try a new type of orange juice, wear X-brand jeans or watch the latest film. They beg us to notice the difference and discover the advantages. They exist to make us want what they are selling.Strangely, the more we are exposed to advertising, the less we notice it. We get so used to seeing advertisements everywhere that they become largely invisible, as if they were another part of our everyday lives. But do that mean that we are no longer affected by them? One advertising expert believes that the special power of advertising lies in the fact that we do not pay much attention to it. Dr. Krugman, who was head of research for a major advertising company for many years, says that the less we notice ads, the more we are affected by them. Dr. Krugman believes that when we stop noticing advertisements, we lower our defenses, allowing the messages of the advertisements to be taken in and stored, ready to be triggered into action at the right moment. He says that the effects of advertising on the individual are small, but over a period of time they have a powerful effect on the masses.A market analyst says that all advertising, no matter how innocent, is misleading in some way. When asked about the power of advertising in research surveys, most people agree that it works, but not on them. Almost everyone believes that they have complete control over how thousands of ads they see every day affect them. 【】51. Ads exist to make people want .A. a new type of orange juiceB. X-brand jeansC. to watch the latest filmD. what they advertise【】52. The more we see ads, the less we .A. pay attention to themB. feel tired of themC. neglect themD. put up with them【】53. Although we may think we are not affected by them, Dr. Krugman believes that advertisements affect .A. all of usB. most of usC. some of usD. a few individuals【】54. Dr. Krugman believes that when we stop noticing ads, we begin to .A. like themB. be on guard against themC. accept themD. dislike them【】55. When asked about the power of ads, most people agree that ads are ineffective on .A. individualsB. massesC. othersD. them Passage 2Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of .getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”【】56. From the passage, we understand that .A.the author did not understand the importance of giving until hewas in late thirtiesB.the author was like most people who were mostly receivers ratherthan giversC.the author received the same education as most people during hischildhoodD.the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a processof getting【】57. According to the author .A.giving means you will lack moneyB.the excitement of giving can bring you moneyC.you don’t have to be rich in order to giveD.when you give away money, you will be rich【】58.The author wrote a note of appreciation to the post office because.A. h e knew what such a note would mean to the post office.B. h e had discovered giving-away made life all the more exciting.C.he believed he would get something back by doing so.D.the postman delivered an important letter in time.【】59. When the author needed a post office box, .A.he had to put his name on a waiting listB.he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation.C.many people had applied for post-office boxes before himD.he asked the postmaster to make one for him【】60. In reply to the postmaster’s question, the author said .A.it was the special deliveryB.it was the post-office boxC.it was the note of appreciation he wroteD.it was he who wrote him a letter a year agoPassage 3Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one of life’s essentials. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest years for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33 percent―from 8.8 million to 11.7 million―according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America. For those who feel pain or guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance.”Said Arnold E.Bender, the former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London. “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. “T he literature,”says one researcher, Dr. Ernesto Pollitt at the University of Texas, “is poor”.【】61. The passage is mainly concerned with .A.a study of the Chicago-based Market Research CorporationB.one of life’s essentialstest figures of people who don’t eat breakfastD.breakfast and human health【】62. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that .A.several studies have been done in the past few yearsB.not eating breakfast does no harm to one’s healthC.adults have especially made studies in this fieldD.eating little in the morning may be good for health【】63. In the third paragraph, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.” means ..A.anyone without breakfast does improve his performanceB.not giving people breakfast improves performanceC.people having breakfast do improve their performanceD.having breakfast does not improve performance, either【】64. The word “literature”in the last sentence refers to .A.stories about breakfastB.written works on a particular subjectC.any printed materialsD.the modern novels of American【】65. What is implied but not stated by the author is that .A.not eating breakfast might affect the health of childrenB.breakfast does not affect performanceC.Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition inLondonD.People who don’t eat breakfast have increasedPassage 4Each day, computers help millions of people do their jobs more effectively. For example, they can help managers decide on a future course of action, and they can then help with the follow-up checks on performance to see if planned goals are being achieved. By using accurate and timely facts supplied by data base management software, a manager can do a better job of identifying problems and opportunities. And managers may not need to spend as much time in controlling when a computer can respond with a triggered report if actural performance varies from what was planned. The time saved in controlling may allow managers to give more attention to employees’ concerns, and this, in turn, may result in improved morale(士气)。
