文化差异类作文模板英语Title: Cultural Differences。
Cultural differences are a fascinating and complex aspect of human society. They encompass a wide range of beliefs, customs, traditions, and behaviors that vary from one group to another. Understanding and appreciating these differences is essential for fostering mutual respect and harmony among people from different backgrounds. One of the most prominent cultural differences is language. Each culture has its own unique language or dialect, which shapes the way its members communicate and express themselves. Language not only serves as a means of communication but also reflects the values and worldview of a particular culture. For example, the Japanese language has different levels of formality to show respect, while in English, the use of titles and formal language may not be as prevalent. These linguistic nuances can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural communication and language learning.Another significant cultural difference is the concept of time. In some cultures, punctuality is highly valued, and being late is considered disrespectful. In contrast, other cultures have a more relaxed attitude towards time and may not adhere to strict schedules. This can lead to misunderstandings and frustration when people from different cultural backgrounds work or socialize together. Understanding and respecting each other's time orientation is crucial for effective collaboration and relationship-building.Cultural differences also manifest in social customs and etiquette. For example, greetings vary widely across cultures, with some cultures placing a strong emphasis on formal greetings and gestures of respect, while others may have more informal or casual greeting customs. Additionally, dining etiquette, gift-giving practices, and body language can differ significantly from one culture to another. Being aware of these differences and adapting one's behavior accordingly is essential when interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.Religious beliefs and practices are another major source of cultural differences. Different cultures have their own religious traditions, rituals, and ceremonies that play a significant role in shaping their values and behaviors. Understanding and respecting these religious differences is crucial for promoting tolerance and inclusivity in a multicultural society. Moreover, cultural differences can also be observed in gender roles and family dynamics. In some cultures, traditional gender roles are deeply ingrained, with distinct expectations and responsibilities for men and women. In contrast, other cultures may have more fluid or egalitarian views on gender roles. Similarly, family structures and dynamics can vary widely, influencing the way individuals interact with their family members and the broader community.Cultural differences also extend to attitudes towards authority, individualism versus collectivism, and the perception of personal space. These differences can influence how people interact in social and professional settings, as well as their values and priorities in life.It is important to recognize that cultural differences are not inherently good or bad; they simply reflect the diversity of human experience. By understanding and appreciating these differences, individuals can cultivate empathy, respect, and open-mindedness towards others. This, in turn, can lead to more harmonious relationships and effective collaboration in an increasingly globalized world. In conclusion, cultural differences encompass a wide range of beliefs, customs, traditions, and behaviors that vary from one group to another. Understanding and appreciating these differences is essential for fostering mutual respect and harmony among people from different backgrounds. By acknowledging and embracing cultural diversity, individuals can contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected global community.。

Students will then apply this knowledge in activities that require them to decide how to act in cross-cultural situations based on the information they have learned about that cultures values.I have come here for about half year, I have travelled here about several times, with my dear sister, with my dear brother, with my closely friend,so when I again was invited to travel around here, I said to myself that there would be nothing new can surprise me. Someone thinks himself is right maybe not right. So this happened on me.Followed him and went where he went and he explained the details about it, everywhere he led me to surperised me and what he said really made me think that what I saw before wasnot the basic of shanghai, the little point ofit .It is necessary totakemore time to know all things around me.In all ones life time it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But it is precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of. When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach; luck and opportunities will come your way and you are overjoyed that they constitute part of your worth. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself, mistaking difficulties and adversities for your own incompetence. It’s likely that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and stay aloof from worldly wearing a mask of cowardice, behind which the flow of sap in your life willbe retarded. To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober realist -- aware of both one’s strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for ideals can never be fully realized. You may be courageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts. That’s to way so long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself there won’t be difficulties you can’t overcome, nor obstacles you can’t surmount. To get a thorough understanding of oneself needs selfappreciation. Whether you liken yourself to a towering tree or a blade of grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature that has its own raison deter. If you earnestly admire yourself you’ll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself you’ll be enabled to fight and overcome any adversity. To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it’s needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent to it in a quiet place so that you wont be hurt by its flames; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. As you are aware, what a person physically has is but a human body that’s vulnerable when exposed to the elements. So if you fall ill, it’s up to you to take a good care of yourself. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won’t be confident andready enough to resist the attack of illness. To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of one’s life. Then one will find one’s life full of color and flavor.文化差异英语作文篇5Today,lots of people are affected by western culture especially the new generation who born after 1990s.In my opinion, some of western culture is good but some of them are not suited.Learning western culture can let us know about what is the western custom and what differnets between chinese and western.because of comparison we can learn the positive sides such as more confident, independent. On the other side, the negative sides we should not learn.for example, some high school student even younger fall in love with others. They spend much time to do it and forget what more important things they really need to do in that moment.Indeed, every coins have two sides.how to do deal with it,I think let time make the answer.文化差异英语作文篇6Through I am a Chinese,I have some west country friends. They lived in China for many years, from their tone ,I know that there are many cultural difference between West and China.Such as difference of dinner manners……In west countries ,when people are having dinner ,if one of them want to go to a WC.He or she shoud say”Excus e me ,I want to go to the toilets…”Only in such a way can others think you are of good manners. And in the bathroom, you can relieve the bowels, wash you faces, refine the make-up ,pick your teeth and so on.When you finished yourself, you can return to you set.A wonderful dinner can be continue. But in China, there are some different of it.When you want to have a bath, you shoud only say”I want togo to washroom”.That just means:I want to go out for a while. If you finished you dinner ,you can also say:”Im full”Th at means:I am full ,help youselves. And then ,you can go out to have a rest or walk. That just some of the difference of dinner manners in west and in China. When we face it in the future ,don`t forget that! 文化差异英语作文篇7There are many difference between China and America such as in the field of geography ,culture, language ,politics ,economy and education with the development of science and technology .The word get even more smaller ,the communication between them is more frequent . 文化差异的英语作文
文化差异的英语作文Title: Understanding Cultural Differences。
Culture is a multifaceted aspect of human society, encompassing traditions, beliefs, values, and behaviorsthat shape how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding cultural differences has become more crucial than ever before. In this essay, wewill delve into the significance of cultural differences and explore strategies for fostering cross-cultural understanding.First and foremost, it's essential to recognize that cultural differences exist on various levels, including but not limited to language, customs, social norms, and communication styles. These differences can manifest in subtle nuances or more profound disparities, influencing interpersonal relationships, business practices, and societal structures. For instance, while directcommunication may be valued in some cultures for itsclarity and efficiency, others may prioritize indirect communication to preserve harmony and avoid confrontation. One of the most significant challenges posed bycultural differences is the potential for misunderstanding and misinterpretation. When individuals from different cultural backgrounds interact, there is a risk of misconstruing gestures, expressions, or words due to cultural context. These misunderstandings can lead to conflict, confusion, or even offense if not addressed with sensitivity and open-mindedness. Therefore, cultivating cultural competence is essential for navigating diverse social landscapes and fostering meaningful connections across cultures. So, how can we bridge the gap between cultures and promote mutual understanding? One approach is through education and exposure to different cultural perspectives. By learning about the history, traditions, and values of other cultures, individuals can gain insights into the underlying motivations and behaviors of people from diversebackgrounds. This knowledge serves as a foundation for empathy and respect, allowing individuals to navigate cultural differences with curiosity rather than judgment. Moreover, effective communication is key to navigating cultural differences successfully. This entails not only linguistic proficiency but also an awareness of nonverbal cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. In cross-cultural interactions, individuals should strive to listen actively, clarify assumptions, and express themselves clearly and respectfully. Additionally, being open to feedback and willing to adapt one's communication style to accommodate cultural differences can facilitate smoother intercultural communication.Another strategy for promoting cross-cultural understanding is through intercultural dialogue and collaboration. By bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to work towards common goals, organizations and communities can leverage the richness of cultural diversity to foster creativity, innovation, and mutual learning. Through collaborative endeavors, individuals can gain firsthand experience in navigating cultural differences, building trust, and forgingmeaningful relationships based on shared values and objectives.Furthermore, it's essential to recognize and challenge cultural stereotypes and biases that can hinderintercultural understanding. Stereotypes oversimplify and generalize complex cultural identities, perpetuating misconceptions and prejudice. By challenging stereotypesand embracing cultural diversity in all its complexity, individuals can cultivate a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone's unique perspectives are valued and respected. In conclusion, cultural differences are an inherent aspect of human society, shaping our identities, interactions, and worldview. While these differences may pose challenges, they also present opportunities for growth, learning, and collaboration. By fostering cultural competence, embracing diversity, and engaging in opendialogue, we can bridge the gap between cultures and build a more interconnected and harmonious world.。

态度差异英文作文
态度差异英文作文英文:Attitude is an important factor that affects our daily life. Different attitudes can lead to different outcomes. In my opinion, having a positive attitude is always better than having a negative one.A positive attitude can bring us happiness and success. When we face challenges, a positive attitude can help us stay motivated and find solutions. For example, when I was studying for a difficult exam, I could have had a negative attitude and thought that I would never pass. However, I chose to have a positive attitude and believed that I could do it with hard work and determination. As a result, I passed the exam with a good grade. On the other hand, a negative attitude can bring us down and limit our potential. When we have a negative attitude, we tend to focus on the problems rather than thesolutions. For instance, when I was working on a group project, one of my teammates had a negative attitude and kept complaining about how difficult the project was. This attitude affected the whole group and made us less productive. In the end, we did not achieve our goal as well as we could have.中文:态度是影响我们日常生活的重要因素。
文化差异如何影响我们的日常生活 英语作文
文化差异如何影响我们的日常生活英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1How Cultural Differences Impact Our Daily LivesWe live in an incredibly diverse world, with thousands of unique cultures spread across every continent. Even within a single country, there can be vast cultural differences between regions, ethnicities, and communities. As a student, I've had the opportunity to interact with people from all kinds of backgrounds, and it has made me realize just how much our cultural upbringings shape our daily experiences, thought processes, and behaviors. One of the most obvious ways culture impacts our lives is through language. The languages we speak not only allow us to communicate, but they also provide windows into entire ways of thinking and expressing ourselves. Many concepts simply don't translate perfectly between languages because they are so deeply rooted in cultural contexts. I have friends who speak languages like Arabic, Mandarin, and Hindi, and I'm alwaysfascinated by the unique idioms, proverbs, and figures of speech that get lost in translation to English.Beyond just language, culture heavily influences our values, beliefs, and worldviews. What one culture might consider a critical moral principle, another might find utterly trivial or even offensive. My North American upbringing has emphasized values like individualism, egalitarianism, and the pursuit of happiness. However, I have classmates from East Asian cultures where values like collectivism, deference to authority, and social harmony take precedence. These differences in fundamental values can lead to culture clashes and misunderstandings when we interact across cultural boundaries. Our cultures also largely determine how we approach fundamental aspects of daily life, like food, dress, and social etiquette. The cuisines we eat, the clothes we wear, and the manners we observe are all deeply rooted in our cultural traditions. For instance, while it's perfectly acceptable in some cultures to eat with your hands, in others it is considered shockingly rude. Simple acts like styles of dress, practices around gift-giving, or attitudes towards punctuality can vary enormously depending on one's cultural context.Even our attitudes towards concepts like time, space, and social relationships are predominantly shaped by culture. I have a friend from a Native American community where time is viewed as a circular, cyclical concept rather than the linear construct that is more common in Western cultures. In some cultures, individuals prioritize tasks sequentially and emphasize punctuality, while in others, multiple tasks are juggled in parallel with a more fluid view of scheduling. Cultures can have radically different notions of personal space, eye contact, body language, and appropriate physical contact. Our cultures essentially create the lenses through which we interpret and experience reality.Beyond surface-level differences, culture can influence our deepest cognitive processes in profound ways. Numerous studies have demonstrated that our cultural backgrounds impact how we visually perceive objects, how we solve problems, how we process information, and even how our brains develop neural pathways from childhood. People from cultures that emphasize holistic, interconnected worldviews tend to have different patterns of thought and reasoning compared to those from cultures that prioritize analytical, decontextualized thinking. Some cultures are more oriented towards survival values like social status and avoiding threats, while others skew more towards values like self-expression and novelty-seeking.Given how deeply culture is woven into who we are as human beings, it's no surprise that cultural differences can be a major source of misunderstanding, conflict, and prejudice in our world. We tend to assume that our own cultural norms are universal and correct, then judge those who deviate from those norms as weird, rude, or wrong. This narcissistic mindset fuels racism, xenophobia, and all manner of divides between cultural groups. At the same time, being exposed to other cultures can be an enriching, perspective-shifting experience that helps usre-examine our own assumptions and biases. Living in a cultural melting pot, I'm constantly being challenged to question my cultural conditioning and consider new ways of looking at the world. Learning about other cultures breeds understanding, empathy, and cognitive flexibility. In an increasingly globalized society, having cross-cultural competence is becoming a tremendous asset. Aside from just being an intriguing intellectual exercise, truly understanding how culture shapes our realities positions us to collaborate, communicate, and innovate more effectively across cultural divides. Perhaps even more importantly, cross-cultural understanding helps dissolve "us vs. them" mentalities andfosters a shared sense of our common humanity amidst the wondrous diversity of human experience. As a student surrounded by cultural diversity, I feel tremendously fortunate to be immersed in an environment where I can learn about different cultures every day. Whether it's through friendships, coursework, campus events, or just casual conversations, I'm constantly being exposed to different perspectives that challenge and expand my own worldviews. While it can sometimes lead to moments of confusion or miscommunication, learning to bridge cultural gaps has been an invaluable part of my education.Ultimately, recognizing and respecting how profoundly culture impacts our daily realities is crucial for fostering harmony in our multicultural world. By opening our minds to new cultures, we don't just learn about others - we learn about ourselves. We realize that our own cultural lenses are just one variant of the beautiful diversity of human experience. With greatercross-cultural understanding, we gain opportunities for deeper connections, richer collaborations, and more inclusive communities that celebrate our differences while cherishing our core shared values. As future leaders in an interconnected global society, developing this culturally fluent mindset will be one ofthe most powerful assets my generation can carry into the years ahead.篇2How Cultural Differences Impact Our Daily LivesAs a student in today's increasingly globalized world, I can't help but notice the rich tapestry of cultural diversity that surrounds me every day. From the variety of languages echoing through the hallways to the diverse fashion styles and culinary traditions represented in the cafeteria, it's clear that people from all walks of life bring their unique cultural identities to our campus. While this melting pot of cultures is beautiful and enriching in many ways, it can also present challenges as we navigate the differences in our values, customs, and ways of thinking. These cultural differences often manifest themselves in subtle, yet profound ways that impact our daily routines and interactions. In this essay, I'll explore how disparities in cultural norms and beliefs can shape everything from our concepts of time and personal space to our communication styles and dietary choices. One area where cultural differences become immediately apparent is our perception and use of time itself. In somecultures, such as many in the West, there's a strong emphasis on punctuality, schedules, and making the most efficient use of every minute. However, in other parts of the world, time is viewed as a more fluid and flexible concept. A meeting scheduled for 2pm might realistically start an hour or two later without being considered rude or inappropriate. As a student with group projects and commitments that require coordination, these contrasting perspectives on time management can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings. Our differing cultural attitudes surrounding personal space and physical contact also play a major role in our daily lives. Some cultures promote a more reserved sense of personal space, finding excessive touching or close proximity uncomfortable or inappropriate. Other cultures, however, may be much more tactile and see nothing wrong with frequent hugs, hand-holding, or standing exceptionally close during conversations. These differences in what's considered a comfortable level of personal space can lead to awkward situations or unintended offence.Another arena where cultural differences have a profound impact is in our communication styles and ways of relating to one another. Culturally ingrained norms around directness versus indirectness, the role of context in conversations, anddiffering values surrounding concepts like individualism versus collectivism all shape how we interact. A statement or gesture intended as an innocent observation in one culture could be perceived as blunt or offensive in another. The degree to which we view disagreements or emotional displays as acceptable also varies across cultural lines. Miscommunications and misunderstandings rooted in these differences are daily occurrences in multicultural environments.Food and dietary customs represent another area rife with cultural differences that impact our lives. What's considered a delicacy or comfort food in one culture might be deemed utterly repulsive or taboo in another. Religious or philosophical beliefs may prohibit the consumption of certain ingredients or food preparation methods. Differing cultural attitudes surrounding mealtime etiquette, from using utensils versus hands to policies on visible burping or slurping, can make an innocent meal a potential minefield if we're unaware of these nuances. As college students frequently cooking communal meals or attending social gatherings involving food, these culinary cultural differences demand sensitivity and openness.Distinct cultural perspectives also shape our attitudes surrounding relationships, family dynamics, gender roles, andsocial hierarchies in ways that have ripple effects throughout our daily routines. How we view the appropriateness of public displays of affection, the depth of obligation we feel toward extended families, or the level of deference we're expected to show authority figures are just a few examples. Violating these unspoken codes of conduct in multicultural settings can lead to discomfort or offense. While the clashes and challenges posed by cultural differences cannot be ignored, I don't mean to paint too bleak a picture. These differences simultaneously represent an incredible opportunity for personal growth, enlightenment, and the expansion of our own worldviews. Learning about and embracing the cultural identities of those around us allows us to develop critical traits like open-mindedness, empathy, and the ability to question our own assumptions and biases. Thecross-pollination of ideas, customs, and perspectives can inspire creativity and innovation. Moreover, despite our apparent differences, I'm continuously struck by the core commonalities and universal human experiences that transcend cultural boundaries. The desire to find meaning, pursuit of happiness, cherishing of loved ones – these are common threads that unite us all. By leadingwith curiosity and compassion while navigating cultural differences, we have the power to highlight the humanity we share even as we celebrate diversity. In this era of globalization and rapidly shifting demographics, developing the cross-cultural competence to bridge divides and seek mutual understanding is not just an academic exercise, but an essential life skill. Every encounter, whether in the classroom, dining hall, or dorm room, represents an opportunity to expand our cultural horizons and build connections across differences. If we can learn to approach each other with nuanced cultural awareness and open minds, we can turn these differences from obstacles into Assets that enrich our daily lives and collective human experience.篇3Cultural Differences: How They Shape Our Everyday ExistenceAs a student hailing from a multicultural background, I've come to realize that the world we inhabit is a intricate tapestry woven with diverse cultural threads. Each culture brings its unique traditions, values, and perspectives, influencing every aspect of our lives – from the way we communicate to thechoices we make on a daily basis. Exploring these cultural nuances has not only broadened my horizons but has also prompted me to reflect on how deeply ingrained these differences are in shaping our everyday experiences. One of the most apparent manifestations of cultural diversity lies in our communication styles. The way we express ourselves, both verbally and non-verbally, is heavily influenced by our cultural upbringing. For instance, some cultures emphasize direct and explicit communication, while others favor a more indirect and implicit approach. This contrast can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications, especially in multicultural settings. I vividly recall instances where a casual gesture or a turn of phrase, innocuous in one culture, was perceived as offensive or insensitive in another.Beyond communication, cultural differences also shape our perceptions of time and punctuality. In some societies, being precisely on time is considered a sign of respect and professionalism, while in others, a more relaxed approach to schedules is the norm. This discrepancy can create friction in academic or professional environments, where expectations regarding deadlines and meeting times may clash.Food and dietary habits are another domain where cultural influences are profound. The ingredients, preparation methods, and even the social rituals surrounding food consumption can vary dramatically across cultures. For many, food is not merely a means of sustenance but a deeply ingrained part of their cultural identity. As a student navigating a diverse campus environment, I've had the privilege of experiencing and appreciating the rich tapestry of culinary traditions from around the globe.Cultural differences also manifest in our approaches to interpersonal relationships and social etiquette. The boundaries between personal and professional spheres, the appropriate level of physical contact, and the expectations surroundinggift-giving or hospitality can vary widely. These nuances can create misunderstandings or inadvertent breaches of social norms, underscoring the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity. Moreover, our cultural backgrounds shape our attitudes towards authority, hierarchy, and decision-making processes. In some cultures, a more egalitarian approach is favored, while in others, hierarchical structures and deference to authority are deeply ingrained. These contrasting perspectives can influence the dynamics within classrooms, workplaces, and even families, impacting how decisions are made and how conflicts are resolved.Another area where cultural differences are acutely felt is in our perspectives on time and planning. Some cultures embrace a more linear, future-oriented approach, meticulously planning and prioritizing long-term goals. In contrast, other cultures may have a more cyclical, present-focused worldview, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment and embracing spontaneity. This divergence can manifest in academic settings, where students from different cultural backgrounds may approach project deadlines and time management differently.Beyond these tangible aspects, cultural diversity also influences our values, beliefs, and worldviews. Our perspectives on concepts such as individuality versus collectivism, the role of religion or spirituality, and our attitudes towards gender roles and family structures can be deeply rooted in our cultural upbringing. These underlying values shape our decision-making processes, our priorities, and our overall approach to life.As a student navigating this multicultural landscape, I've come to appreciate the richness and complexity that cultural diversity brings to our daily experiences. It has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, question my assumptions, anddevelop a deeper empathy and understanding for perspectives different from my own.At the same time, I've also witnessed the potential for misunderstandings and conflicts arising from cultural differences. Misconceptions, prejudices, and a lack of cultural awareness can create barriers and hinder effective communication and collaboration. It is therefore crucial for us as global citizens to actively cultivate cultural competence and embrace diversity as a source of strength and enrichment.Ultimately, cultural differences are not merely superficial variations; they are deeply ingrained in our identities and shape the lens through which we perceive and engage with the world around us. By acknowledging and respecting these differences, we can foster greater understanding, build bridges across cultures, and create more inclusive and harmonious communities. As I continue my academic journey, I am committed to embracing cultural diversity as an opportunity for personal growth and intellectual enrichment. By actively seeking to understand and appreciate the cultural nuances that shape our daily lives, we can build a more compassionate, respectful, andinterconnected world – one where our differences are celebrated and our shared humanity is recognized.。

In today's globalized world, cultural differences play a significant role in shaping our interactions with others. As we interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, we often encounter differences in language, customs, traditions, and social norms. These differences can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts if not understood and respected. In this essay, we will explore the impact of cultural differences on our interactions and ways to bridge the gap between different cultures.Firstly, language barriers are one of the most common challenges when dealing with cultural differences.Different languages have their own unique structures, expressions, and idioms, which can be difficult to understand for non-native speakers. This can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings, as people may interpret words and phrases differently based on theircultural context. Moreover, language is deeply intertwined with culture, and certain words or phrases may carry different connotations or meanings in different cultures. Different Culture, Different Attitudes Towards FamilyRecently, I am busy with my 2000-word essay on different family lives between Chinese and English people. And of course I consulted a lot of books and essays on this topic. Among them one greatest difference impresses me most. That is the different attitudes toward family. That day, I referred to an article on the different names of two peoples. As we all know, Chinese people put family name first, while the English first name first. So while reading this passage, I didn’t pay much attention, and just took it as granted. But the word “why” made me confused. It’s just a tradition, and there’s no reason. However, the following lines gave me a great shock, yes, a great shock. To put family name first is to put family as the top priority, and that is why Chinese people put family name first. Oppositely, English people put the fist name first because they believe family should give place to individual, and individual is the most important. As a Chinese, honestly, I can’t accept this attitude. But this reminds me of the big differences of two countries’ national condition, history, folk custom, culture, etc. So we cannot say which is better. Proceeding from a comprehensive perspective, we can see both cultures have their own merits and demerits.Back to the topic, in china, family being the first means children should obey the parents’decisions and ask for advices if necessary, and the children should not rebel against parents’orders. People believe this is the right way to be filial and to show respect to the elder. However, destructively, this negatively exerts bad effects on the children that they become too independent to make themselves be able to live on their own after 18 years old. While in Britain, individual being first means parents never interfere with children’s personal lives. The children are cultivated to be the independent person, both physically and mentally, who have the rights to make decisions and speak freely. Consequently, they can handle their personal affairs and tackle difficulties on their own at an early age. However, on the other hand, the children have no idea why they should support the elderly, because in their opinion, everyone should be independent. In china, there are numerous examples to prove that many grown-ups cannot make decisions by themselves and still are spiritual independent on their parents. Take my cousin for example, he is still single with an age of 30, so he chooses to live with his parents, not because they have no money but for his spiritual independence. In his view, living with his parents makes it more convenient to enjoy a better life, because parents may do the housework and prepare dinners for him, sometimes they can even help with his decisions. But, take a look at an English child, and then you will find it impossible for him to live with his parents any more after being an adult. If they have to do so, they must pay the rent. May be in our Chinese opinions, this practice is cruelty, but it is common in Britain. When talking about supporting the elderly, we may also find such a huge gap between Chinese and English opinions. In china, it is a right and proper thing for children to look after the old parents, but in Britain things are different. Every people think the elderly should be independent, and nobody question that. For example, there was one old man going to his son’s house to live for only half a year in the financial crisis, but he had to pay for the rent of his room at 200pounds each month. As far as I am concerned, maybe it is cruel and brutal to say that the British old people serve themselves right just as the words “no pay, no gain”. And it is also inappropriate to say thatthe Chinese elderly working wholeheartedly is just to have an exchange for a peaceful sunset of life. But, to some extent, they all are the truth. From the above words, we can see the dramatic differences between Chinese and Britain peoples’ attitudes towards family. Perhaps it is difficult for us to agree with their opinions, but what we can do is to try to understand and tolerate their attitudes, and this requires us to adapt to their way of thinking and know more about their culture, history, art, custom and so on. And I think this is what a foreign language-majored student should do most.。
