专题限时检测(十八)阅读理解B篇保分练(一)(共4篇,限时28分钟)AVisa last year offered up to 50 small businesses a $10,000 reward to go cashless. Though it is still too early to know what will happen to the businesses that won the competition (Visa has not announced the winners yet), the key arguments in favor of cash-abandonment are that it would lead to more efficient service and carry a lower risk of theft. A recent Ne w York Times article covered restaurants in Manhattan that take plastic only, and supporters are looking forward to an entirely cashless society.Doing away with cash may indeed sound appealing. Supporters often note that China and India have already gone further in this direction than the United States. But a few drawbacks are obvious: Card companies such as Visa charge merchants high processing fees, the risk of fraud (诈骗) balances out the lower risk of theft, older consumers may not wish to make the change, and consumers will lose yet more privacy (large companies will have the ability to track every purchase made). Perhaps the less obvious one is that a cashless system will exclude the poor and the near-poor, for many poor people don't have credit cards or bank accounts.Conditions in the U. S. are nowhere near suitable for entering a cashless society; too many people would be left behind. Your young friend may be happy to accept money via PayPal or another app, your cafe may use an iPad instead of a cash register, but landlords in low-income areas still prefer money orders. It's convenient for consumers to charge, say, an outing to the nail salon — but when you add the tip to your credit card bill, it may never make it to the worker.

专题限时检测(二十六) 任务型阅读(一)(限时24分钟)A(2019·南京、盐城一模)As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we've watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don't know where to focus their efforts or they haven't understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you're looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve — and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually. The first step is to get a sense of how your selfperception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you). This is especially true for the development of emotional intelligence because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions. For example, most of us think that we're good listeners, but very often that's really not the case.Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance.Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behavior and motivation to do so.To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your selfperception and reputation, you should use a 360 degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple facets of EI.The key is to find one that guarantees confidentiality to those giving you feedback and that is focused on development and not on performance assessment.Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, you're at a huge disadvantage if you're only interested because others said you should be.Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically (内在地) motivated to make the effort matters more when changing longstanding habits than it does when simply learning a skill. That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at theintersection of the feedback you've gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations (渴望).Understanding the impacts of your current EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over the long haul as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.Once you've determined which EI skills you want to focus on, identify specific actions that you'll take.If you're working on becoming a better listener, for example, you might decide that when you're conversing with someone you'll take the time to pause, listen to what they have to say, and check that you understand before you reply.Keep it specific. You should also take every naturally occurring opportunity to practice the skill you're developing, no matter how small.By starting to change your routine reactions, you'll be well on your way to figuring out the old habits that aren't serving you well and transforming them into new, improved ones that do.PassageoutlineSupporting detailsIntroduction Though globally acknowledged, EI still (1)________professionals, for they aren't aware how to improve it.Spot the(2)_______betweenselfperceptionandreputation·With external reality check, we are(3)_________ of understanding ourinteractions accurately.·We are (4)________to change our behaviorby getting an outside feedback.·We are expected to (5)_________ howselfperception differs from reputation inall aspects.Find out what(6)______ to us·We should clearly (7)________our goals andfocus our effort on improving ourselvesinstead of just learning a skill.·(8)________the outside feedback with ourgoals can give us support on the way tostrengthening our EI.Approachesto strengthening EIIdentify what changesBe (9)_________about the actions and take advantage of every possible opportunity towe will make practice EI skills.Summary (10)________useless old habits and develop new ones in areas forimprovement others have identified with your own goals tostrengthen your EI.

AFormal Afternoon TeasA pot of tea, a plate of finger sandwiches and a selection of pastries and scones: In America, this wonderful way to wile away the afternoon is commonly, though mistakenly, known as “high tea.” In Britain, where it originated, “high tea” is simply an old-fashioned name for the evening meal; it’s also called “meal tea.” The light, elegant, scone-centric meal served at fancy hotels is called “low tea” or “afternoon tea”. I am grateful to all of them.”Sosa and his wife Tess were traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, that day with 9-month-old Damian and 4-year-old Sofia. The couple were sitting several rows apart when the Airbus A320 suddenly struck a flock of Canada geese moments after taking off from LaGuardia Airport.Sosa could smell jet fuel burning and immediately knew they were in danger. “There was an explosion in the left engine which I could see from my seat,” he recalled. “The next thing I knew the plane went dead silent when both engines broke down. I got a quick glance at Tess seated ahead of me when we both realized we were in trouble.”The next three minutes were harrowing(折磨). The powerless plane plunged over The Bronx and pointed toward the Hudson, where it would eventually ditch(在水上迫降), thanks to a split-second decision by Capt. Sullenberger. Miracle on the HudsonCHave you ever spent an afternoon in the backyard, maybe grilling or enjoying a basketball game, when suddenly you notice that everything goes quiet? There is an old phrase “calm before the storm”, often used in a situation---a quiet period just before a great activity or excitement. According to our own experience, we know there is actually calm before the storm. But what causes this calm? And is it always calm before the storm?A period of calm happens in a particular kind of storm, the simplest kind of storm---a single-cell thunderstorm. In this type of thunderstorm, there is usually only one main stream of current, which is warm, damp air and drawn from places near the ground. Storms need warm and damp air as fuel, so they typically draw that air in from surrounding environment. Storms can draw in the air that fit their need from all directions—even from the direction in which the storm is traveling. As the warm, damp air is pulled into a storm system, it leaves a low-pressure vacuum(真空) coming after. The rising air meets the cold dry air that has already existed in the storm clouds, thus the temperature of the warm, damp air drops, and the water vapor in it changes into tiny drops that are a precondition of rain. These drops accumulate and build on larger particles(颗粒) like dust, until they grow large enough to form raindrops. This warm, damp air keeps moving upwards, but it becomes cooler and drier during its trip through cloud. When it reaches the top of the cloud, the air is squeezed out at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big thunderclouds. From there, the air goes down. Warm and dry air is relatively stable, and once it covers a region, that air, in turn, causes the calm before a storm. Most thunderstorms, though, don't start with calm. That's because most are actually groups of storms with complex wind patterns. There's so much air moving up and down storm groups that the calm before the storm never happens. Instead, before the storm, it might be really windy!28. Which best fits the description of a particular kind of storm?A.A thunderstorm with a single shape.B.A thunderstorm without strong winds.C.A storm with air drawn from every direction.D.A storm fueled by moving air from the ground.29. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Warm and wet air.B. Warm and dry air.C. Cold and wet air.D. Cold and dry air.30. Which does the writer most likely agree to?A. Presence of the calm relies on stable air.B. All thunderstorms don’t start with the calm.C. The drier the air is, the bigger the storm will be.D. Storm happens without air moving up and down.31. What is the passage mainly about?A. A brief introduction of a peaceful storm.B. A personal experience of a heavy storm.C. An explanation of the calm before a storm.D. An analysis of causes and effects of a storm.DAs the international demand for narrative(叙事的) film/TV content continues to increase with popular streaming services like Netflix and others the two questions then come: will the cominggenerations receive most of their entertainment through visual means rather than through the written word and will such an increase of narrative film/ TV reduce the importance of reading?Growing examples of this trend include the diminishment(减少) of fiction in the common core (核心的)curriculum, the ever-rising culture of computer games, the wave of streaming services of wide international reach, and movies filled with special effects made for children and teenagers. Nor must we ignore the economic dangers that lie ahead for the written word. The narrative film industry is a moneymaker that dwarfs(使相形见绌) the publishing industry. The other underlying question, of course, is “does it really matter if the written word bows to the world of film/TV?” From my point of view, any diminishment of fiction delivered by words is a loss for mankind. There is no greater human feature than the imagination. It lies at the very soul of the human species. It is the brain’s most powerful engine. It is the essential muscle of life and like all muscles it must be exercised and strengthened.Writing and reading are the principal tools that inspire, create and empower our imagination. Anything that diminishes that power is the enemy of mankind. It should be known that I am not opposed to new media and technological advances. Instead, I have always felt it necessary to adapt to advancing technology. In fact, a number of my novels are in various stages of development for film, TV, and live stage productions. My hope is that the written word will only stand to be complemented(补充)by its visual counterparts(对应物), not pushed to the edge of extinction.Of course, there are those who will present arguments for the superiority of the moving image over the written word. Each has its place. My argument is for finding the right balance between it and the moving image.32. In what way does narrative film/TV embarrass the written word?A. Economic benefitsB. International reachC. Cultural influenceD. Educational importance33. Why does the author value the role of the written word?A. It strengthens our muscles.B. It helps sharpen imagination.C. It distinguishes man from each other.D. It paves the way for narrative film/TV.34. What is the author’s attitude towards technology?A. CautiousB. SkepticalC. PositiveD. Critical35. What’s the author concerned about?A. The fate of reading.B. The extinction of fiction.C. The impact of the written word.D. The future of the moving image.

We want to do as much as we can, see the world, learn new things — and it can all get a bit too much. Sometimes we reach a point when we feel that we can no longer be interested in everything. We have to shut some of life out, and we don't like that. We are living under the false assumption that to know anything worthwhile takes years of study, so we might as well forget it.But something inside us rebels. We still want to learn new things and make new things. They don't have to be big things. Coping with too big a challenge can be daunting The secret is to be a “micro-master” by perfecting lots and lots of small things — for a big payoff.A micro-mastery is a self-contained unit of doing, complete in itself, but connected to a greater field. You can perfect that single thing and move on to bigger things. A micro-mastery is the way we learn as kids. You never absorb all the fundamentals straight away — you learn one cool thing, then another. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has written about “flow”—a state in which time seems to be suspended because our involvement in what we're doing is so great. A micro-mastery, because it is repeatable without being repetitious, has all the elements that allow us to enter a flow state, which produces great contentment. As we get older our default setting (默认设置) becomes “off”not “on”.We stop getting interested in new things because we haven't got enough time or energy. This is an excuse but who can blame us when we hear we need 10,000 hours to “master”something. Micro-mastery slices through all the excuses. You start with something so small and easy that it doesn't impact on your life except positively. We envy the person who has a perfect French accent, who can roll a kayak, or compose a poem that isn't laughable, who can lay a brick wall that doesn't fall down. These are regarded as hard things to learn which mean a greater mastery of the field concerned. But with micro-mastery you start with the test piece and then — and only then — do you go back upstream to learn anything more about the new world.Seeing the world in terms of micro-masteries makes anything seem possible. Fancy bookbinding? Yoga? Tap dancing or tank driving? All have their micro-masteries. It's very liberating — you no longer have to feel trapped in your day job. You will start, in a small way, to get your life back from the idea that the world seems to push on us that we should do just one thing all our lives.

(A)A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the desk in front of? him. When the final student was seated he picked up a large and empty glass bottle and proceeded to fill it with rocks about 2 inches in diameter(直径). He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.He then picked up a box of pebbles(鹅卵石) and added them to jar, shaking it lightly. The pebbles , of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. "Is the jar filled now?" "Yes," the students said. But then he picked up a bag of sand and poured it into the bottle. The sand filled in everything else. Once more he asked if it was full and after some thinking they said thatit was.The professor then took two cans of beer from a bag at the side of the desk and opening them both, poured their entire contents into the jar. The students roared at this demonstration. After the laughter subsided the professor spoke again: "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things in your life; your family, your partner, your health, your children...things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your lifewould still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter... like your job, your house, and your car. The sandis everything else. The small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks." "The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, or rewire the lamp. Take care of the rocks first...the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The else is just sand."After the impact of what he had said settled, one of the students raised her hand and __________"I'm glad you asked." he replied." It just goes to prove that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."1.What’s the best title of the passage ? 2020届高考英语二轮复习:阅读理解

1、An introduction to this book is as superfluous as a candle in front of a powerful searchlight. But a convention of publishing seems to require that the candle should be there, and I am proud to be the one to hold it. About ten years ago I picked up from the pile of new books on my desk a copy of Sons and Lovers by a man of whom I had never heard, and I started to race through it with the immoral speed of the professional reviewer. But after a page or two I found myself reading, really reading. Here was—here is—a masterpiece in which every sentence counts, a book packed with significant thought and beautiful, arresting phrases, the work of a remarkable genius whose gifts are more richly various than those of any other young English novelist. To appreciate the rich variety of Mr. Lawrence we must read his later novels and his volumes of poetry. But Sons and Lovers reveals the range of his typical power. Here are combined and blended(混合的) sort of “realism” and almost lyric(抒情的) imagery and rhythm. The speech of the people is that of daily life and the things that happen to them are normal adventures and accidents; they fall in love, marry, work, fail, succeed, and die. But of their deeper emotions and of the relations of these little human beings to the earth and to the stars, Mr Lawrence makes something near to poetry and prose(散文) without violating its proper “other harmony”.Take the marvellous paragraph on next to the last page of Sons and Lovers(Mr Lawrence depends so little on plot in the ordinary sense of the word that it is perfectly fair to read the end of his book first):Where was he? One tiny upright speck of flesh, less than an ear of wheat lost in the field. He could not bear it. On every side the immense dark silence seemed pressing him, so tiny a spark, into extinction, and yet, almost nothing, he could not be extinct. Night, in which everything was lost, went reaching out, beyond stars and sun, stars and sun, a few bright grains, went spinning round for terror, and holding each other in embrace, there in the darkness that outpassed them all, and left them tiny and daunted(气馁). So much, and himself, infinitesimal, at the core a nothingness, and yet not nothing.Such glorious writing lifts the book far above a novel which is merely a story. I beg the reader to attend to every line of it and not to miss a single one of the many sentences that await and surprise you. Some are enthusiastic and impressive, like the paragraph above; others are keen, “realistic” observations of thin gs and people. In one of his books Mr Lawrence makes a character say, or think, that life is “mixed”. That indicates his philosophy and his method. He blends the accurately literal and trivial(琐碎的) with the extremely poetic. To find a similar blending of tiny daily detail and wide imaginative vision, we must go back to two older novelists, Hardy and Meredith. I do not mean that Mr Lawrence derives(源于) directly from them or, indeed, that he is clearly the disciple(弟子) of any master. I do feel simply that he is of the elder stature(名望) of Hardy and Meredith, and I know of no other young novelist who is quite worthy of their company. When I first tried to express this comparison, this connection, I was contradicted by a fellowcritic, who pointed out that Meredith and Hardy are entirely unlike each other and that therefore Mr Lawrence cannot resemble both. To be sure, nothing is more hateful than forced comparisons, nothing more boring than to discover parallels between one work of art and another. An artist's mastery consists in his difference from other masters. But to refer a young man of genius to an older one, at the same time pronouncing his independence and originality, is a fair, if not very superior, method of praising him.1.The underlined word “superfluous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.A.meaningfulB.unnecessaryC.fundamentalD.fashionable2.What is typical of Lawrence's works?A.They equally reveal his genius power.B.They contain lots of great lyric poetry.C.They present some real living situations.D.They focus on relations between humans.3.What does the author want to illustrate by including one paragraph from Sons and Lovers?A.The plot of the novel has little to do with daily life.B.It is wise to read Lawrence's books from the end.wrence is not capable of telling good stories.D.The language in Lawrence's books is elegant.4.Who were Hardy and Meredith?A.They taught Lawrence literature when he was young.B.They were the realistic novelists of Lawrence's time.C.They were novelists who resemble each other in writing.D.They were novelists combining details with imagination.5.According to the author, what does an artist's mastery mean?A.He must have personal diversity.B.He must have the critical spirits.C.He must be happy to be compared.D.He must be a man of genius.6.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To introduce Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers.B.To show his experiences of reading classics.C.To analyze Lawrence's writing characteristics.D.To compare the styles of different novelists.2、My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.”When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation. I didn’t get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest. The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore. In an age in which the word “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who made it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn’t mean they have no desire to do good.Still shocked by my son’s daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him---- but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What’s for supper?”I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toastsome bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.1.Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?A.He was an excellent swimmer.B.The water of the river is shallow.C.He was old enough to swim.D.The rocks ca n be of help if there’s danger.2.The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably means __________.A.Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kidsB.Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinksC.Anton always has a desire to help othersD.Anton seldom changes his mind3.In the mother’s eyes, what her son did was _______________.A.dangerous but interestingB.meaningful but difficultC.unexpected and courageousD.awful and absurd4.What might be the best title for the passage?A.My Son, My HeroB.Anton, A Silent BoyC.A Good DeedD.A Proud Mother3、If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage at Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather or humans.Born and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall painting at Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gans u Province. The 1,651-year-old Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a huge collection of Buddhist art—more than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square meters of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is China’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduation from Peking University in 1963. While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors. In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, but found Fan firmly in their way. “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings. “Despite our efforts to minimize damage, we can’t completely stop them from being eroded. But the digital database will last.”Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up in Shanghai with their aunt. “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt,” she said. Fan, 79, retired two years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.1.Which of the following measures didn’t Fan Jinshi take to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes?A.Opening Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes to the public extensively.B.Planting trees and stopping the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes being eroded.C.Picturing and classifying all the sculptures and paintings online.D.Putting doors on the caves and monitoring temperature and humidity.2.When was Fan separated from her husband?A.In 1963.B.In 1967.C.In 1986.D.In the late 1990s.3.The phrase “in their way” in Pa ragraph 4 means ________.A.Go to a place.B.Be in favor of something.C.Reject something.D.Give in to something.4.The passage is mainly about _________.A.the history of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes.B.the attractions of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes.C.Fan’s devo tion to preserving Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes.D.the appeal for the protection of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes.5.What kind of person do you think Fan is?A.Considerate and easy-going.B.kind and intelligent.C.Humorous and sweet-tempered.D.Devoted and persistent.4、Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and thereafter a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.Sounds unusual, doesn t it? But it’s not that unrealistic, with the development of China's highspeed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railwayplan----to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. If China's plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days. The new system would still follow China's high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. China's bullet train(高速客车),the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the world's fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issuevs that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge (轨距),maintenance of railway tracks. So,it's important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions yuan on domestic railway expansion. China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on,not to mention the better communicationamong those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they'll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.1.China s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because______.A.China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regionsB.China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various waysC.China will develop its railway system and communication with other countriesD.the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation. business and tourism2.According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is______.A.technical issuesB.safety of the systemC.financial problemsD.maintenance of railway tracks3.Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's high-speed railway plan?A.Critical.B.Reserved.C.Doubtful.D.Positive.4.Which of the following might be thebest title for the passage?A.New Railway StandardsB.Big Railway DreamsC.High-speed Bullet TrainsD.International Railway Network5、Daniel Anderson, a famous psycho logist, believes it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds. One traditional be lief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. Butaccording to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers. For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.1.By watching TV, children learn _________.A.images through wordsB.more than explicit meaningsC.more about images than wordsD.little about people’s psychology2.An educational program is best watched by a child _________.A.on his ownB.with other kidsC.with his parentsD.with his teachers3.Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?A.Radio-listeningB.Television-watchingC.Parents’ reading listD.Parents’ educational background4.Anderson believed that _________.A.the more a child watches TV, the smarter he isB.the younger a child is, the more he watches TVC.the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TVD.the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school5.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To advise on the educational use of TV.B.To describe TV’s harmful effects on childre n.C.To explain traditional views on TV influences.D.To present Anderson’s unconventional ideas.6、Students who want to attend an American college or university must explain how they will pay for their education. They have to show that they will be able to pay for each year of study. Students have to consider not only the tuition, the cost of classes, but also meals and a place to live in, which is known as room-and-board. They also need money for books and supplies. And they need money to spend on social activities and other things.Educational advisers say foreign students should have enough money in a local bank to pay for at least two months of expenditure. So how much will a year at an American school cost? Generally speaking, the answer is: a lot. A leading state university in the Pacific Northwest will serve as an example. The University of Washington says foreign students are paying more than $36,000 this year. This major research university currently has 2,600 foreign students from more than one hundred countries. There are many schools that cost less, but also others that cost more. Its web site says the University of Washington does not offer financial assistance to international students. This is generally true of American schools, especially at the undergraduate level. The international application for the university includes a Statement of Financial Responsibility that must be signed. Students must also provide a bank letter or statement from within the past six months. And they have to name someone who will help with payments. These people must send proof from a bank to show that they have the money. Your government or employer may be able to help you pay all or some of the college costs. A good idea is to ask at least eighteen months before you want to start classes in the United States. Our Foreign Student Services, including links to web sites discussed in our reports, can be found at w+w=w.unsv.c-o/m. To learn more about higher education in America, the State Department has a special web site: .1.Students who are going to study in America must __________.A.buy their own textbooks themselvesB.prove that they can pay for their studyC.find a living place with a kitchenD.find someone to pay for their college fees2.Who is this speech probably given to?A.Students who are going to graduate from colleges.B.Students who are going to college in the US.C.Students who are going to apply for room-and-board.D.Students who can’t pay for the ir college study by themselves.3.What is NOT a must if you, a foreign student, apply for the university in the US?A.Apply eighteen months before you want to start.B.A signed Statement of Financial Responsibility.C.People who will help you pay for the study should provide a bank proof.D.A bank letter from within the past six months.4.What is the speaker’s purpose in this speech?A.To tell foreign students that money is the most important thing in the US.B.To advise foreign students to apply as soon as possible so as to have more chances.C.To state some requirements that foreign students should pay attention to when applying for colleges.D.To tell people about the present situation of foreign students in the US.

专题限时检测(二十七)任务型阅读(二)(限时24分钟)A(2019·泰州模拟)Who's Really Addicting You To Technology?“Nearly everyone I know is addicted in some measure to the Internet”,wrote Tony Schwartz in The Ne w York Times. It's a common complaint these days. A steady stream of similar headlines accuses the Net and its offspring apps, social media sites and online games of addicting us to distraction. There's little doubt that nearly everyone who comes in contact with the Net has difficulty disconnecting. Then who's at fault for its overuse? To find solutions, it's important to understand what we're dealing with. There are four parties cooperating to keep you connected: the tech, your boss, your friends and you.The technologies themselves and their makers are the easiest suspects to blame for our distraction. Online services like Facebook, Google, twitter and the like rely on advertising revenue, so the more frequently you use them, the more money they make. No wonder these companies employ teams of people focused on improving their services to be as attractive as possible.Good as these services are, there are simple steps we can take to keep them from coming too close. However, less than 15 percent of smartphone users are willing to adjust their notification settings — meaning the remaining 85 percent of us default to (默认) the app makers' every preset devices. While companies like Facebook harvest attention to generate revenue from advertisers, other technologies have no such agenda. Take email, for example. We check email at all hours of the day — we're obsessed, because that's what the boss wants. For almost all white-collar jobs, email is the primary tool of corporate communication. A slow response to a message could hurt not only your reputation but also your livelihood.Your friends are also responsible for the addiction. Think about this familiar scene. People gathered around a table, enjoying food and each others' company. Then, during an interval in the conversation, someone takes out their phone to check who knows what. Barely anyone notices and no one says a thing. The reality is taking one's phone out at the wrong time is more than an impolite behavior because, unlike other minor offense, checking tech is contagious (传染). Once one person looks at their phone, other people tend to do the same, starting a chain reaction. The technology, your boss, and your friends, all influence how often you find yourself using (or overusing) these gadgets. But there's still someone who deserves careful examination — the person holding the phone. When people are doing something difficult they'd rather not do, the phone is used to transportthem elsewhere. They can easily escape discomfort temporarily, by answering email or browsing the web under the excuse of socalled“research”. The truth is that we are working unproductively out of our bad habits.Personal technology is indeed more attractive than ever, which doesn't mean we shouldn't attempt to control our use of technology, instead, we should come to terms with the fact that it's more than the technology that's responsible for our habits. Our workplace culture, social norms and individual behaviors all play a part.
