Write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1When we conduct foreign trade, the importance of understanding the language of a country cannot be underestimated. The successful marketer must achieve export communication which requires a thorough understanding of the language as well as the ability to speak it. Those who deal with advertising should be concerned less with obvious differences between languages and more with the exact meanings expressed.A dictionary translation is not the same as an idiomatic interpretation, and seldom will the dictionary translation meet the needs. A national producer of soft drinks had the company’s brand name impressed in Chinese characters which were phonetically (按照发音地) accurate. It was discovered later, however, that the translation’s literal meanin g was ―female horse fattened with wax‖, hardly the image the company sought to describe. So carelessly translated advertising statements not only lose their intended meaning but can suggest something very different including something offensive or ridiculous. Sometimes, what was translated was not an image thecompany had in mind for their products. Many people believe that to fully appreciate the true meaning of a language it is necessary to live with the language for years. Whether or not this is the case, foreign marketers should never take it for granted that they are affectively communicating in another language.41. Which of the following is the best topic for the passage?A. Idiomatic Meanings of Languages.B. Culture Difference between Languages.C. Language Problems in Foreign Trade.D. Translation Failures in Foreign Trade.42. To an advertiser, which should he pay more attention to?A. Understanding of a language.B. Ability to speak a language.C. The sentence ―… the importance of understanding the language of a country cannot be underestimated‖ in Para. 1 most probably means ________.A. understanding of the language of a country is extremely importantB. understanding of the language of a country is less importantC. not enough importance is attached to the understanding of the language of a countryD. enough importance is attached to the understanding of the language of a countryPassage 2Elephants who paint aren’t new. Her keeper bought her some art supplies.‖ George said, ―Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning.‖The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. Initially, the keeper guides the elephant’s trunk over the canvas (花布) and offers rewards for good performance.―It only takes a few hours to a day to teach them,‖ said Mia Fineman, an art historian whose book When Elephants Paint is an illustrated history of the Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project.46. He had seen many newlyweds coming into his store to shop for their first refrigerator, washer and dryer, and air-conditioner. Pen and pencil in hand, they would ask him a lot of questions about price, features and after-sale services, but they would usually walk away at the end of their inquiry. The other day a young couple came into his store. They asked him all the usual questions and he answered all of them patiently. But when he suggested an order at the end, they replied firmly, ―We’ll have to look around places first.‖Although feeling a bit disappointed, Mr. Stevenson did not show it. Instead, he smiled, moved closer and said, ―I know you will go to Discount Dan to look at the price tags. That’s perfectly understandable. I do the same. In fact, they sell the same stuff as we do. But if you buy things there, there is something you will not get. And that is me. I come with everything I sell. I’ve been in the business for thirty years and in a few years’ time I’m going to give my store to my daughter and son-in-law. I hope they will carry on the family business. I stand behind everything I sell and I will make sure that you will never regret buying things from me.‖After this short speech Mr. Stevenson offered the young couple some ice cream to thank for their interest.Impressed by his honesty and sincerity, the young couple decided to place an order.51. Why did the young couple finally decide to place an order?A. They realized how important after-sale services were.B. They became interested in the owner and his family.C. They were touched by the owner’s hospitality.D. They were convinced of the owner’s honesty and sincerity.Passage 4Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot of money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideas of their elders. This is as it should be.The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have been around a bit longer. They don’t like to feel that their values are being quest ioned or threatened. And this is precisely what the young are doing. They are questioning the assumptions of their elders. Office hours, for instance, are nothing more than enforced slavery. Wouldn’t people work best if they were given complete freedom and responsibility? And who said that all men in the world should wear grey clothes and short hair? Why have the older generation so often used violence to solve problems? Why are they so unhappy and guilt-ridden in their personal lives? Haven’t the old lost touch with all that is important in life?Traditionally, the young have turned to their elders for guidance. Today, the situation might be reversed. The old could learn a thing or two from their children. One of the biggest lessons they could learn is that enjoyment is not ―sinful‖. Enjoyment is a principle one could apply to all aspects of life. It is surely not wrong to enjoy your work and enjoy your leisure. It is surely not wrong to live in the present rather than in the past or future.56. What’s the old generation’s comment on the young?A. The young are more knowledgeable about the world around than they were.B. The young treat historical events as seriously as they do.C. The young do not behave the way they did when they were young.D. The young tend to use violence to solve their problems.57. The old people believe that ________.A. the old values they have kept to should also change with the advancing societyB. they know more because they have experienced much more of lifeC. young people are good successors to their ideasD. young people should not continue to live the way they did58. The young are challenging traditional values EXCEPT in ______.A. clothing fashionB. traditional conceptsC. fixed working hoursD. marriage patterns59. We can infer from the 2nd paragraph that ________.A. the young generation differs from the old in their attitude toward lifeB. the young generation seeks to possess more material wealthC. the old are regretful for their past personal livesD. the old have been trying to keep up with the modern life60. One important aspect the old should learn from the young is that ________.A. they should fully enjoy lifeB. they should expect a better future and cherish the hard past timeC. they should try to integrate leisure in workD. they should learn to attach importance to material lifePart IV Writing(本大题1小题,共20分)Write an essay on the topic “My View on One-child Family”. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Have you ever noticed advertisements which say, “Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or your money back! From the firstday your pronunciation will be e xcellent. Just send …” and so on. Of course it never happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to learn is the mother tongue. And think how much practice that gets. Before the Second World War people usually learnt a foreign language in order to read the literature of the country. Now speaking the foreign language is what most people want. Every year many millions of people start learning one. How do they do it?Some people try at home with books and records or tapes; some use radio or television programs; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will take a long time, like language learning at school.A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken. However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors need to be able to read books and reports in the foreign language. 福师12秋《大学英语(1)》练习题福师12秋《大学英语(1)》练习题一、阅读:( 1 )Are you worried by the rising crime rate? If you are, then you probably know that your house, possessions and person are increasingly in danger of suffering from the tremendous rise in the cases of burglary(入室行窃) and assault(人身攻击).Figures indicate an ever-increasing crime rate but it is only too easy to imagine “It will never happen to me.” Unfortunately, statistics show that it really can happen to you and, if you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim.Fortunately, there is something definite which you can do. Protect Alarms can help to protect our house with a burglar alarm system which is effective, simply to operate and easily affordable.Y ou must remember that possessing a burglar alarm is no indication that your house is packed with valuable possessions. They say the risk of a heartattack is greatest within an hour of being in traffic. The findings are based on a German study of almost 700 people who suffered heart attacks. The patients described their activities during the four days before their heart attack. Researchers found that those who had been in traffic were three times more likely to have a heart attack within one hour, compared to those who had not been in traffic. Most of those in the study had been traveling by car. But some had been on bicycles and others were on buses.Research shows that people in cars and buses are exposed to ten times the amount of pollutants as people walking on the street. That is largely because they breathe in the particles and gasses released from the vehicles in front of them.Over time, these small particles speed the buildup of a sticky substance in the blood. This can cause blockages(阻塞) to form in the arteries(动脉) around the heart and lead to a heart attack.Other studies have also linked heart trouble to stress, similar to the kind that people face while driving in heavy traffic. But the researchers of the latest study say they do not know whether the increased heart attack risk was the result of stress or pollution. They suggest it may be a combination ofstress, noise and pollution. Experts say the research shows the need fro cleaner vehicles and better city planning.6. According to the study, which of the following ways is the safest in traffic?A. Walking on the streetB. Driving a carC. Taking a busD. Ridinga bicycle7. What is good manners in one country may not be appropriate behavior in another. Chinese people may be shocked at what counts as good manners in England. When an Englishman passes a friend in the street he does not always stop to talk. He may just nod, say" hello" and pass on. If two friends do stop to talk, they do not shake hands. It is only at parties for young people (students, for instance) that a person could go up to someone he does not know and introduce himself. On more formal occasions or at parties run by older people a guest always waits to be introduced to someone he does not know by the host, hostess or another guest who he already knows. At even a formal dinner an Englishman does not wait for a toast before he has a drink. The English reserve toasts for very formal or very special occasions. In these cases the toast will usually be accompanied by a short speech, for example, at a wedding reception or at a party for somebody who is retiring. After a private dinner in someone's house an Englishman will only shake hands with the host and hostess if it is a fairly formal occasion, like a business dinner, and he will usually put his coat on and say goodbye as he leaves the house.Luckily, like Chinese people, the English usually excuse foreign students over matters of etiquette. But even so, perhaps the safest advice for the overseas student, no matter what country he is visiting, is to follow the old proverb: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.11. When an Englishman meets a friend in the street, he may ____________________.A. stop to talk to his friendB. just nod and say “hello”C. shake hands with his friendD. just say goodbye12. What will a person do when he attend a party run by older people?A. Go up to a stranger and introduce himself.B. Ask his friend to introduce him to others.C. Give a speech in front of others to introduce himself.D. Wait to be introduced by the host / hostess.13. On which occasion will the English toast?A. A wedding reception.B. A dinner party.C. A speech.D. A meeting.14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. D ifferent countries have similar ideas about what good manners are.B. Chinese people seem to be more polite than English people.C. An Englishman will shake hands with the host after a private business dinner.D. The English usually can’t understand foreign students impolite behaviors.15. Which of the following best explains the proverb: when in Rome, do as the Romans do?A. If you go to Rome, you must do things like the Romans.B. When you go to a foreign country, you should learn something about their manners.C. Romans always do the right thing, so you should follow them.D. Manners in Roman are as easy to follow as in other countries.参考答案:BDACB( 4)Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or only there to buy a book as a present. Y ou may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive design is irresistible, although this method of selecting ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather uninteresting book, you soon become lost in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must hurry to keep some forgotten appointment——without buying a book, of course. The opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. Y ou can go to such places as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” Y ou needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Y ou may want to find out where a particular section is. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. But when he has led you there, the assistant should leave politely and look as if he is not interested in sellinga single book.1. The best title for this passage may be _________.A. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up his position in society.6. You should decide on the best choice andmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Some people do not like anything to be out of place. They are never late for work. They return their books to the library on time. They remember people’s birthdays, a nd they pay their bills as soon as they arrive. Mr. Rock is such a person.Mr. Rock works in a bank, and lives on his own. The only family he has is in the next town. His sister lives there with her husband, and her son, Mark. Mr. Rock does not see his sister or her family every year, but he sends them Christmas cards and he has not forgotten one of Mark’s seventeen birthdays.Last week Mr. Rock had quite a surprise. He drove home from the bank at the usual time, driving neither too slowly nor too fast. He parked his car where he always parks it, out of the way of other cars, and went inside to make his evening meal. Straight away, there was a knock at the door. Mr. Rock opened the door only to find a policeman on the door step.“Have I done anything wrong?”Mr. Rock asked himself. “Have I driven on the wrong side of the road? Rock had not seen his nephew for a long timeB.Mr. Rock did not like to see the young manC.Mr. Rock was a shy personD.M ark came to visit his uncle regularlyPassage 2If you judge by the number of people who go to see the games and by the number of those who actually play it,basketball is probably the most popular sport in the United States today. It is mainly an indoor game, and the season extends from late autumn, through the winter, to early spring. There are many professional teams; but for the most part, basketball is a school sport. There is hardly a high school or college in the country that does not have its team.In spring and summer, the most popular sport is baseball. During the warm weather, you can see young men and boys playing this game in any part of the country. Radio and television bring the details of the big games to every corner of that land, and the activities of the professional teams are a subject of conversation for Americanseverywhere. In autumn, the most popular sport is football. As you know, this is not the same kind of game that is so popular in other parts of the world. Like basketball and baseball, it is typically American, and those who have never seen it before have difficulty in seeing any sense in it. But for most people the game itself is not so important as the music and the cheering that go with it. On a cool bright autumn afternoon, there is nothing so colorful and exciting as a football game.6. Basketball is probably the most popular sport in America today because_____________.A. it is an indoor gameB. it is a school gameC. most people like to play or watch the gameD. there are many professional teams7. The passage shows that in America___________________.A. almost all the high schools and colleges have their basketball teamsB. every high school doesn’t have its own basketball teamC. no college has its own basketball teamD. some high schools and colleges have their basketball teams8. During the warm weather, Americans often talk about_______________.A. the activities of the professional baseball teamsB. the radio and televisionC. the details of the football matchesD. the details of the big games10. From the passage we know that American football is_______________.A. similar to that in other parts of the worldB. different from that in other parts of the worldC. not so popular as that in other parts of the worldD. as popular as that in other parts of the worldPassage 3A great deal of nonsense is written about the character of a nation, chiefly because many observers, influenced by national pride and prejudices feel irresistibly tempted (诱惑)to generalize(概括)about everything. In a nation of many millions of people, there are bound to be many different kinds: rich and poor, clever and stupid, good and bad, modest and conceited (自满的), patient and impatient, honest anddishonest. Moreover, a nation may develop a sort of collective character in its politics and literature, which is not recognizable in individual people. Generalizations, therefore, tend to be unrealistic, and should be made, and accepted, with caution. One word of warning is necessary. The British people who take up appointments in Asia and Africa are not fully typical of their nation. For one thing, they are usually specialists in one field or another. The average British person is not a specialist, and although he can read and write he is not particularly cultured in the intellectual sense. “Highbrow” is a word very often used by the common people of Britain to describe and condemn any form of intellectual culture. Moreover, the great technical achievements of Europeans do not mean that a European is basically more intelligent than an African or Asian. The achievements are due to the handing down and sharing of knowledge and to organized training and research rather than to mental superiority; and of course, the mere possession of, say, a motor-car or washing machine and the ability to operate it, does not require any understanding of how it works.11. To know the character of a nation, one should _______.A.o bserve the behavior of the leadersB.read the literature of the nationC.never accept any generalizationsD.f orm a sound judgement of everything12. One reason for the difference between the British people working abroad and theaverage person at home is that the former ________.A.a re more intellectually culturedB.have made many foreign friendsC.work much harderD.h old important positions13. According to the author, ______.A.E uropeans are more intelligent than Africans and AsiansB.there is no such a thing as mental superiorityC.Europeans should share their knowledge with Africans and AsiansD.m ental superiority is vital to the scientific progress in Europe14. This passage is written ______.A.t o warn the readers against misunderstanding the British peopleB.to make a brief introduction to different social classes in BritainC.to criticize the nonsense written about BritainD.t o describe the people’s living conditions in Britain15. What does the author imply by writing the last sentence of the passage?A.K nowing how to operate a motor-car or washing machine means a highmental intelligence.B.The technical achievements of Europeans are due to their intelligence.C.Only knowing how to operate some household appliances does not reallymean that they are of real intelligence.D.E uropeans are more intelligent than Africans and Asians because they are ofmental superiority.Passage 4When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks from other beasts. Andlater they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dogwould not eat what was caught without permission. But now people in cities need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.16.According to the passage, in the old days people trained dogs _______ .A.f or protection against robberyB.just for funC.for companionshipD.f or protection against other animals17.The word “companionship” may mean _______.A.w orshipB.treasureC.friendly relationshipD.p artnership18.The dogs were used for hunting because ________ .A.t hey were good huntersB.they obeyed their mastersC.they were useful for protectionD.t hey did not eat other animals19.The most important reason for people to keep dogs now is _______.A.t hey need companionB.they like childrenC.they enjoy huntingD.t hey want to protect themselves20.We can infer (推断) from the passage that ________.A.d ogs can be helpful to those who need companyB.city people always feel lonelyC.dogs can be interestingD.t he city can be a very dangerous placePassage 5As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for healthy mind and body. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be.A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusualdifficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact, we make choices between “ flight” and “fight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life and death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we can not remove stress from our life (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.21. We are fast losing the art of relaxation because_______.A.t he pace of life is increasingB.we are rushing through our lifeC.we are on the go from morning till nightD.a ll of the above22. According to the writer, the most important character fora manager is _______.A.t o know the art of relaxationB.not to fear stressC.to provide motivation for othersD.t o enjoy good health23. As far as the amount of stress is concerned, _______.A.d ifferent people can withstand different amount of stressB.different people can withstand the same amount of stressC.a man can withstand different amount of stress at different timeD.a man can withstand the same amount of stress at different time24. The phrase “such a reaction” refers to _______.A.t he “fight”B.the “ flight”C.the reaction to high blood pressure and heart diseasesD.t he reaction to stress both chemically and physically25. The a uthor’s idea about stress is possibly ______.A.t o completely remove it from our livesB.to have stronger stress that lasts longerC.to find proper ways to deal with itD.t o be always exposed to huge stressPassage 6No other author in American literature is better known or more loved than Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Born in Missouri in 1835, he grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River and became a riverboat pilot when he was 21 years old. So he adopted the pen name of “Mark Twain”, which was derived from a phr ase meaning “two fathoms deep” used by the boatmen on the Mississippi as they measured the depth of the river. The river environment inspired the two novels which brought him his greatest fame: “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn”. It is easy to look around for villains---- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the professors for assigning too much work, the parents for pushing their children too far, the students for driving themselves too hard. But there are no villains, only victims. They know that entrance into the better schools will be an entrance into the better law firms and better medical practices where they will make a lot of money. They also know that it is very hard to achieve success both in life and in study. The pressure is almost as heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. They live in a brutal economy.
