IT doesn’t matter
John Hagel and John Seely Brown have written a response to my article, saying that it "will have a significant impact in the business world" (but that it's "also dangerous").
General Motors CIO Ralph Szygenda offers some thoughtful comments on my article in the May 19 Information Week. He says, "Nicholas Carr may ultimately be correct when he says IT doesn't matter . . . [but] business-process improvement, competitive advantage, optimization, and business success do matter and they aren't commodities. To facilitate these business changes, IT can be considered a differentiator or a necessary evil. But today, it's a must in a real-time corporation . . . I also agree on spending the minimum on IT to reach desired business results. Precision investment on core infrastructure and process-differentiation IT systems is called for in today's intensely cost-conscious business versus the shotgun approach sometimes used in the past." I find it interesting, and perhaps telling, that while my argument has certainly raised the hackles of IT vendors, consultants, and pundits, most of the actual IT executives I've heard from have expressed genuine interest in and considerable agreement for my point of view.

steve jobs death
Steve Jobs Departs a World He Helped TransformApple’s visionary was born in the days of room-sized computers and, perhaps more than anyone, helped forge an age of personal devices with 1,000 times more powerSteven P. Jobs was born on Feb. 24, 1955, into an era of rotary phones and room-sized computers. He died on Oct. 5, 2011, having contributed perhaps more than any other person to forging an age of personal computers, slick electronic tablets, and slender mobile phones with a thousand times more computing power than the old mainframes. Jobs was 56 when he died, of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by friends and family, including his wife, Laurene, and their children.Jobs was a total original. He was somehow able to blend iconoclasm, rock-and-roll, and chic industrial design with the nerd sciences, as well as the unseemly profit motive of the corporation. He made that contrary combination seem totally legitimate. His iconic products—iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad—literally changed the world, making people more connected in the virtual world and less so in the physical one. He had a knack for whipping customers and the media into frenzies of anticipation and adulation, and he often elevated the business of Apple (AAPL) with a touch of the poetic. “If the hardware is the brain and the sinew of our products, the software is their soul,” was one of the last things he said publicly, at an Apple event on June 6.Apple will undoubtedly suffer without him. All the various aspects of his contribution have been chronicled since his resignation on Aug. 24, ad nauseam. Jobs harangued his employees into meeting the standards of his own lofty perfectionism, over and over. He canceled as many projects and prototypes as he approved, which ended up focusing Apple’s attention and resources on just a few game-changing products. He was relentless at manipulating the media, by alternately withholding access and then granting it, and with theatrical product reveals and occasionally belligerent interviews. He could turn a routine press conference to introduce a new gadget into something as anticipated as the Super Bowl.At Apple’s presentation of the new iPhone on Oct. 5, Jobs’s absence was gnawingly felt. Apple’s new chief executive, Tim Cook, and his fellow execs exuded confidence and used a lot of the same intonations as Jobs. But they did not come near to expressing his vivacious spirit or his deepness of feeling about Apple and its future. It felt, in a way, like they were auditioning for something. Cook himself repeatedly used the word “momentum” to express the company’s progress. Apple surely has that—shares of its stock are up 4,000 percent over the last 10 years. But Steve Jobs never had to repeat a word like that.Jobs believed the best-looking, easiest-to-use computers and devices were seamlessly integrated products where both the hardware and software were created by the same company. That conviction was wildly out of fashion in the 1990s, when Microsoft (MSFT) ruled the land and companies like Dell (DELL) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) packaged computers around Bill Gates’s operating system and Intel’s (INTC) microchips. Jobs tenaciously stuck to his principles and his revival of Apple—beginning in 1997 but really gathering steam with the 2001 release of the iPod—was not only a triumph of his vision, but a wholesale rejection of the previous decade’s conventional wisdom. “Steve was among the greatest of American innovators—brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented en ough to do it,” said President Barack Obama in a statement.Silicon Valley will now be a different place. Tech companies here measure themselves against Apple; other CEOs compare themselves to Steve Jobs. Jobs had a role—the charismatic technology guru—that a generation ago was occupied by Robert Noyce, a co-founder of Intel. He seemed to somehow hover above the fellow entrepreneurs of his day. “Steve looked at us like we were stupid,” says Scott McNealy, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a friend of J obs’s. “There are not many people I would take that from. I would take that from Steve.”The list of possible candidates for Jobs’s lofty throne is short. Jeff Bezos, CEO of (AMZN), lives up in Seattle and has Jobs’s competitive ruthlessness and business insight, but not his product flair. Oracle’s (ORCL) Larry Ellison, Jobs’s best friend, arguably has had an impact on the world but mostly in the esoteric field of business computing, not consumer devices. Bill Gates, iconic in his own right, has withdrawn from technology into philanthropy. And his legacy is being gradually diminished by the decline of Microsoft and its inability to catch the wave of smartphones and tablets.Maybe there are new Steve Jobses out there and we don’t yet know their names. “There will be figures like him again to fill these shoes. Theyjust have not grown up yet,” says Steve Blank, a longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur and historian. “People will look at Jobs and aspire to be him, and that is his lasting legacy. He set the gold standard for every company in the 21st century.”Jobs was not just admired, he was loved. That was clear on Wednesday, when fans posted their thoughts on Twitter and Facebook. They also flocked to Apple stores around the world—those sparkling monuments to industrial design and connected devices that no one thought Jobs should build when he opened the first one in 2001. They left flowers, shared memories, and simply wanted to be part of what felt like a momentous event—the passing of an era. It brought to mind the death of John Lennon in 1980, and the em otional throngs that gathered in Liverpool and New York’s Central Park. Lennon was one of Jobs’s heroes, and Jobs used a photograph of him and Yoko Ono in the 1997 advertising campaign that espoused his own personal philosophy: Think Different.Steve Jobs thought differently, and we all benefited. As a beloved innovator retreats into memory, he’ll be missed.。

It's often said in business that some event—— good or bad——happened on a particular chief execu tive's “watch.” It's a nautical expression suggesting that the enterprise is a ship and that this particular chief executive took the helm at some moment mid-journey,just in time to land a great white whale or hit an iceberg. Good or bad, that course and the event that followed were already set before the CEO entered the pilothouse. The idea is that CEOs come and go,but great companies go on forever.

MATRICULATION FIXATIONMatriculation fixationTwo years ago, I was languishing in the waiting room of a Philadelphia hospital when a complete stranger unexpectedly began telling me about his daughter's college plans. As my 79-year-old mother was recovering from major surgery that afternoon, I could not give him my complete and undivided attention. But as the briefing session wore on, I did manage to garner most of the relevant details. The girl, bright but not brilliant, had been accepted to a first-tier university without financial aid but had also been accepted to a local, second-echelon university where she was promised a free ride. Money being tight, with other college-bound children in the family queue, the man had persuaded his daughter to accept the second university's offer. Now he was worried that she would one day rue this decision. Because she would be graduating from a less prestigious institution, fewer contacts would be made and fewer doors would be opened. Her degree would put her within striking distance of the yellow brick road, but not physically on the road itself. Did this make her father the spawn of Satan? As a man of the world accustomed to being told the most intimate details about complete strangers' marriages, careers and hobbies, I had long ago acquired the requisite skills to mediate this crisis. I told the man that many of my high school chums had graduated from the second-tier university in question and had gone on to live rich, full lives.I told him that I myself had graduated from a second-echelon Philadelphia university not unlike the one his daughter was entering, and had managed to carve out a nice little niche for myself. I told him that my college days had been among the happiest of my life, that the sun never set without my thanking God for the illumination and inspiration provided by my talented, dedicated professors. Pressed for biographical data, I explained that I was a freelance writer, ticked off a list of my credentials and said I was pretty happy with the way my career had turned out.The man had never heard of me, had never read anything I'd written. Though he tried to feign interest in my pathetic curriculum vitae, I could see that he was devastated. By following an academic path similar to mine, his daughter, who was also planning a career in journalism, was going to end up as big a failure as I.I never did find out why he was visiting the hospital.I mention this incident because it illustrates the neurotic gabbiness that afflicts parents when it comes time to send their children to college. I know whereof I speak. Next fall, my daughter goes to college. Three years later my son will follow suit. I will be sorry to see them go; over the years they have proved to be remarkably amusing. But every dark cloud has a silver lining. Once my children have left the house, I will never again have to participate in a mind-numbing discussion about where my children or my friends' children or my neighbors' children are going to college, and why. On thissubject, I am completely tapped out. This lack of interest does not stem from pure selfishness or unalloyed contempt for other people's offspring. Rather, I feel this way because I find almost all conversations about the college selection process to be banal, self-aggrandizing, self-flagellatory or punitive. I'd rather talk about cribbage. The most infuriating conversation is the one where the parent clearly seeks a decisive, career-validating moment of emotional closure. Such individuals believe that securing admission to a top-flight university provides a child with an irrevocable passport to success, guaranteeing a life of uninterrupted economic mirth. Parents such as these upwardly mobile chuckleheads exude an almost Prussian belligerence when announcing their children's destinations, congratulating themselves on a job well done, while issuing a sotto voce taunt to parents of the less gifted. For them, the hard part of child rearing is now over. Junior went to the right prep school, made the right friends, signed up for the right activities and is now headed for the right school. Now we can get the heck out of here and move to Tuscany. But in reality, life doesn't end at age 17. Or 21. In real life, some children get the finest educations but still become first-class screw-ups. My own profession is filled with people who went to the right school but ended up in the wrong career. (They should have been flacks; the phone ringing in the next room is not and never will be the Pulitzer committee.) Some of those boys and girls most likely to succeed are going to end up on welfare or skid row. At which point they'll need parental input. Or cash. A parent's responsibility doesn't end once the kids leave. A parent's responsibility never ends. That's why Nature gives you the job.A second, far more numerous class of obsessives consists of people who suddenly realize that their Brand X children aren't going to make the cut. Seventeen years of unread textbooks, unvisited museums and untaken A.P. courses are now finally taking their toll, and those grandiose delivery-room dreams of Amherst, Bard and Duke are suddenly going up in smoke. Bashfully, shamefacedly, miserably, these parents now mumble the names of the glamourless institutions their progeny are skulking off to. Invariably, they are colleges you never heard of in towns no one wants to visit in states whose capitals only repeat winners on ''Jeopardy'' can name. The market has spoken, the glum parental expressions seem to say. My child is an idiot. But once again, reality has a way of upsetting the worst-laid plans of mice and Mensa. Some kids are late bloomers. Some kids are better off in a less competitive environment. Lots of people achieve huge success in this society without a degree from a prestigious university. Just because your child has failed to clear the first, or even the 20th, hurdle doesn't mean you should disown him. Matisse didn't get rolling until he was in his 40's. Bill Gates, David Geffen, Michael Dell, Graydon Carter and Madonna are all college dropouts. Ronald Reagan attended tiny Eureka College, while Warren Buffet went to Football U in Lincoln, Neb. Despite what you may have read in F. Scott Fitzgerald (who dropped out of Princeton in 1917), life doesn't have just one act. There is often Act II. And Act V. Not to mention the sequels.Matriculation fixation reaches its dottiest form during the obligatory campus visit. Here it is neverentirely clear what parents are looking for, particularly in high-profile institutions whose renown has in some way preceded them. During a recent visit to M.I.T., I watched the first 30 seconds of an admissions office video poking fun at the university's reputation as a nerd factory. While my wife and daughter watched the rest of the video, which assured applicants that M.I.T. nerds were hard to find, I took a stroll around the campus. I saw a lot of nerds. And I do not mean this as a criticism.Later that morning, a guide showed a bunch of us around campus. At one juncture, she pointed out a restaurant where students could grab a fast, inexpensive meal. ''How much?'' asked one high-strung mother. ''About eight bucks,'' she was told. The woman shuddered, noting that forking over $8 for dinner every night could get pretty darned expensive.''It's going to cost you 40 grand to send your kid to school here, I interjected.''''Don't start worrying about dinner prices.''Since that visit this fall, this incident has become an invaluable part of my repertory. Now, whenever I am dragooned into the 30,000th interminable conversation about the college selection process I indicate that sedulous monitoring of on-campus restaurant prices should be a vital component of the winnowing procedure, particularly vis-脿-vis panini. People who hear me say things like this can't decide whether I am insensitive or ornery or flat-out dumb. Well, let's just put it this way: I was never M.I.T. material.1. 两年前的一天,我坐在费城一所医院的大厅里焦急地等待着,一位素不相识的人突然向我讲述了他女儿的大学就读计划。

a student drop out of columbia作文Chief editor of China Daily, dear sir / Mr. MadamI, I am very glad to read an article in your newspaper about rural children forced to drop out of school. This has had a great impact on me and moved me to write to you.The main reasons for this phenomenon are as follows: family poverty, need to help families in order to earn income, if children aretoo far away or not interested in external assistance and unwilling to goto school, then most of these obstacles can be eliminated. The challenge is to organize donations from different sources so that we can work together to solve this problem. Every child has the right to education.I am very eager to contribute to solving this problem. I will donate my pocket money to this cause. I really hope your paper can accept this challenge and organize a plan to help these rural children.Thank you for your attention Cheng, Li Hua.中文翻译:《中国日报》总编辑,亲爱的先生/马达米先生很高兴在您的报纸上读到一篇关于农村儿童被迫辍学的文章,这对我产生了巨大的影响,并感动我写信给您。

Lamp life is defined as the time it takes for more than 50 percent of a lamp sample population to have brightness decrease by approximately 50 percent of the rated lumens for the specified lamp. The lamp life rating is not guaranteed in any way. The actual operating life span of a projector lamp will vary according to operating conditions and usage patterns. Usage of a projector instressful conditions which may include dusty environments, under high temperatures, many hours per day, and abrupt powering-off will most likely result in a lamp’s shortened operating life span or possible lamp failure.HDMI input: One HDMI connector for supporting HDMI 1.4a. specification HDCP compliant.Analog Audio input: One 3.5 mm stereo mini phone jack (Blue).Variable audio output: One 3.5 mm stereo mini phone jack (Green).USB (type B) port: One mini USB slave for remote support and firmware upgrade.5V/1.5A output: One USB type A 5V DC / 1.5 A outputs for supporting wireless display mpPHILIPS 195 W user-replaceable lamp Lamp life Normal mode: Up to 5000 hoursEco mode: Up to 6000 hours6Additional InformationFor additional information on how to use your projector, please see the Dell Projectors User Guide at /support/manuals.28Additional Information7Contacting DellFor customers in the United States, call 800-WWW-DELL (800-999-3355).Dell provides several online and telephone-based support and service options. 题目2正反方:This house believes that everyone should attend college
2. This house believes that everyone should attend college正方:We believe that everyone reach the appropriate age should go to college nowadays. In the 21st century, the competition is more and more stiff. College education is a best way to success and to make society progress .1、College definition:定义一:Those national or international organizations and their associated networks that carry out research or provide education and training on the scientific, technical, legal, social cultural and economic aspect of water and water-related issues, as well as those national or international professional organizations and media which provide information on research. It includes: national and international professional organizations, private or public universities, schools and research centers, public and private training centers.定义二:College refers to university colleges, further education colleges (for any age student, and usually for any level), divided into technical colleges and community colleges and sixth form (ages 16-18) colleges. College is the generic term for any post-secondary undergraduate education. People go to "college" after high school, regardless of whether the specific institution or a university. Everyone means one has the aptitudes or abilities. to attend college.Attending college benefits people a lot, the mental rigor, the social activities, maybe even just the experience of college itself.这两个定义都可以用.2、The aim of college education :College training is the great but ordinary means to a great but ordinary end; it aims at raising the intellectual tone of society, at cultivating the public mind, at purifying the national taste, at supplying true principles to popular enthusiasm and fixed aims to popular aspiration, at giving enlargement and sobriety to the ideas of the age, at facilitating the exercise of political power, and refining the intercourse of private life. It is the education that gives a man a clear, conscious view of his won opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force in urging them. It teaches him to see things as they are, to go right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant. It prepares him to fill any post with credit, and to master any subject with facility. It shows him how to accommodate himself to others, how to throw himself into their state of mind, how to bring before them his own, how to influence them, how to come to an understanding with them, how to bear with them. He is at home in any society; he has common ground with every class; he knows when to speak and when to be silent; he is able to converse; he is able to listen; he can ask a question pertinently, and gain a lesson seasonably, when he has nothing to impart himself; He is ever ready, yet never in the way; he is a pleasant companion, and a comrade you can depend upon; he knows when to be serious and when to trifle with gracefulness and to be serious with effect. He has the repose of a mind which lives in itself, while it lives in the world, and which has resources for its happiness at home when it cannot go abroad. He has a gift that serves him in public, and supports him in retirement, without which good fortune is but vulgar, and with which failure and disappointment have a charm. The art which tends to make a man all this, is in the object which it pursues as useful as the art of wealth or the art of health, though it is less susceptible of method, and less tangible, less certain, less complete in its result.3、The positive effects of college education:①According to the U.S. Census Bureau Earnings by Occupation and Education Index released in 2005, the percentages indicated that people with some college education were seven percent more likely to be employed. With a bachelors degree you 12% more likely to be employed and for those with an advanced degree, your odds increase to 16% over people with a high school diploma.②A、A new report from the College Board has plenty of data to back up the well-worn claim that college graduates can expect significantly higher wages over their lifetime than their counterparts. And the gap between the earning potential of college graduates and high school graduations is only widening, the report notes. For instance, in 2005, a person with a professional degree could expect to make $100,000 a year, compared with less than $32,000 for a high school graduate and $51,000 for a graduate of a four-year college.(有大学背景的人比没有大学背景工资更高)B、one will have a greater chance of a higher salary than non-college educated workers. The median earnings of a high school graduate in the United States were $21,332 in 2005 according to the same Earnings by Occupation and Education report by the Census Bureau. Workers with some college can expect a median income of over $10,000 more than someone with a high school education (for a median salary of $31,988), and over $20,000 more with a bachelor degree (for a median salary of $42,877).A和B的两个例子都是一样的,大家认为哪个好久选哪个。
