1.阅读理解
Even if you've never been to Phoenix, you know this about the place It's hot. From June to September, the temperature can easily surpass the century mark. But that doesn't stop hikers from attempting the 1.3-mile hiking to the top of the city's famed Camelback Mountain. Signs warn that the trail is "extremely difficult". If you continue, a posted checklist suggests at least a liter of water per person. And if you're still not stopped, another sign farther up declares: "If you're halfway through your water, turn around!"
Unfortunately, many people to not take the warnings seriously. Fortunate y, Scott Cullymore does. The 53-year-old Cullymore can be found hiking up and down Camelback a couple of times a day, giving out cold bottles of water to worn-out hikers. He has helped hydrate so many hikers that he has earned a heavenly nickname: the Water Angel.
Cullymore was on Camelback Mountain one day in 2015 when a British tourist died after being lost for nearly six hours in the July heat. That experience inspired him to start helping people caught unaware by the cruelty of Mother Nature. "They underestimate the mountain, and they overestimate what they can do, and they get themselves in trouble." he warned.
One hiker who was offered water agrees. "You think you know the heat, but then you get out here in the desert and it surrounds you like a blanket," said Austin Hill, who was hiking with a high school friend. They were lucky, he said pointing to
Cullymore. "We ran into this Good Samaritan here." And with that, the Water Angel goes in search of another hiker in need.

Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash. The Plano, Texas, detective, dressed in plain clothes but wearing his badge (徽章) and gun, caught the man and pinned him to the hood of his car. But Hoffman had trouble containing the thief, and they got into a struggle.
"The detective has a martial arts background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a martial arts background, too, because he was able to break away so easily," a Plano police spokesperson said.
The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching: Andre Harvey and Kirby Sample, two day laborers. Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone and hit record. "I hate to say it, but I thought that this policeman was doing something illegal," Harvey said. "But when he asked for help, I thought, well, there won't be a shooting if I get over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action—while he was still recording the video—as did Sample.
"Harvey caught hold of the suspect's arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs (手铐) on," said the police spokesperson. The 27-year-old suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other
offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than $ 50.
"I've been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life," Harvey told WFAA. "It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive."
After the arrest, the three men got to know each other over steaks and ribs at a local steak house—Hoffman's treat, as a thank-you. But the rescuers say Hoffman deserves credit too. "It
could have turned real ugly." Sample told the media "He handled himself like a real professional."(1)What made Hoffman call for help when arresting the suspect?
A. He was not on duty.
B. He needed witnesses to support him.
C. He wanted to push the thief into the car.
D. He couldn't control the suspect.
(2)Why did Harvey and Kirby record the scene at the beginning?
A. To follow the fashion.
B. To keep track of the criminal.
C. To record the detective's violence.
D. To avoid being involved in the incident.
(3)What can be inferred about Harvey?
A. He was ready to violate the law.
B. He might have had some illegal behaviour.
C. He was out of work at that time.
D. He had a good martial arts background.
(4)What is Harvey and Sample's attitude towards Hoffman?
A. Appreciative.
B. Prejudiced.
C. Skeptical.
D. Cautious.
【答案】(1)D
(2)C
(3)B

3.阅读理解
If we want to find out what kind of technology people used in the past, we normally have to rely on archaeologists to find ruined buildings and parts of tools or instruments or machines. Archaeologists then try to reconstruct, sometimes with the help of computer technology, what these ancient buildings and objects must have looked like, and how they might have been
made. Sometimes historians are lucky and find an ancient document with a written description of these ancient buildings and objects.
We can understand, then, why Chinese historians were so excited when they found cave paintings which show ancient science. They found these paintings in the world-renowned Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City, in Northwest China's Gansu Province. There are 500 man-made caves and they have survived for at least 1,600 years. Almost all of these caves have paintings on their ceilings or walls and they date from the 4th to 14th centuries. Wang Jinyu is an expert on these cave paintings (also called frescoes) and he says: "We discovered frescoes containing scientific and technological content in almost all of the caves which have frescoes." What is remarkable about these cave paintings according to the Xinhua News Agency is that they provide evidence of "scientific and technological inventions by ancient Chinese in maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, agronomy, architecture, textiles, traffic and transportation, arms and military equipment and medical sciences".
Among the discoveries experts have made are cave paintings showing ancient techniques of pottery making and wine production and paintings showing ancient weaving machines and then toothbrushes! The paintings also give some evidence of the lifestyle at the time with, for example, pictures of people boiling milk over 1,000 years ago. Experts believe that there is more evidence to be found, but even now the caves are a wonderful natural museum. If the walls and ceilings of the caves were all put together they would form a tapestry 20 kilometers long and 2 meters high! It won't be possible to travel back in
time-that only happens in films-but visiting these caves would be the nearest experience you could get to travelling back in time.
(1)Why were Chinese historians excited when they found cave paintings showing ancient science?
A. Because they had rarely seen cave paintings.
B. Because they could make the place a tourist attraction.
C. Because they could learn about ancient science through them.
D. Because they would be given lots of money for the discovery.
(2)The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City______.
A. have 500 man-made caves
B. have been there for at most 1,600 years
C. help us to know little about ancient science
D. have paintings on their ceilings in every cave
(3)Experts had discovered cave paintings showing the ancient techniques of ______. A. pottery making and wine production B. weaving machines and toothbrushes
C. boiling milk over 1,000 years ago
D. architecture and weaving
(4)The article is more likely to be selected from the magazine ______.
A. Modern Countries
B. Business World
C. Network World
D. Popular Science
【答案】(1)C
(2)A
(3)A
(4)D

4.阅读理解
It can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and
learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.
At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children's book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.
(1)Why was the author advised to read children's books?
A. Because she was weak in reading great works.
B. Because she was slow to learn language.
C. Because she liked children's literature.
D. Because she couldn't remember any words.
(2)What can kids get from children's books according to
the passage?
A. Vocabulary and listening skills.
B. Learning methods.
C. Words and structures.
D. Designing skills.
(3)What causes the author feel surprised while reading children's books?
A. Grasping the context from the pictures.
B. Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.
C. Getting familiar with the plots of the story.
D. Understanding the words simply from the context.
(4)What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Reading Children's Books
B. The Way of Learning Languages
C. The Method of Using Dictionary
D. My Good Reading Habits
【答案】(1)A
(2)C
(3)D

Losing a wallet is one of those careless acts most of us have come across, at some point or the other in our lives. The man was identified as Todd Brown and it was one of his co-workers who made sure Jeannie Shamatt's post reaches his colleague. Jeannie turned to Facebook again to thank Brown and his family for restoring her faith in humanity.
"I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can regardless of the outcome. This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything. 6.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
In university I had a part-time job at a shop that sold doughnuts and coffee. Situated on a block where several buses stopped, it served the people who had a few minutes to wait for their bus.
Every afternoon around four o'clock, a group of schoolchildren would burst into the shop, and business would come to a stop. Adults would glance in, see the crowd and pass on. But I didn't mind if the children waited for their bus inside. Sometimes I would hand out a bus fare when a ticket went missing —always repaid the next day. On snowy days I would give away some doughnuts. I would lock the door at closing time, and we waited in the warm shop until their bus finally arrived.
I enjoyed my young friends, but it never occurred to me that
I played an important role in their lives — until one afternoon when a man came and asked if I was the girl working on weekdays around four o'clock. He identified himself as the father of two of my favorites.
"I want you to know I appreciate what you do for my children.
I worry about them taking two
buses to get home. It means a lot that they can wait here and you keep an eye on them. When they are with the doughnut lady, I know they are safe." I told him it wasn't a big deal, and that I enjoyed the kids.
So I was the Doughnut Lady. I not only received a title, but became a landmark.
Now I think about all the people who keep an eye on my own children. They become, well, Doughnut Ladies. Like the men at the skating rink (滑冰场) who let my boys ring home; Or the bus driver who drove my daughter to her stop at the end of the route at night but wouldn't leave until I arrived to pick her up; Or that nice police officer who took pity on my boys walking home in the rain when I was at work —even though the phone rang all the next day with calls from curious neighbors. "Was that a police car I saw at your house last night?"
That wasn't a police car. That was a Doughnut Lady.

Every person plans to run off to some tropical isle, but few do. Real life, family, work, and monetary limitations get in the way. Ian Fleming let none of these considerations stop him.
After the war, Fleming set down his schedule. The first week of January saw him leave England and travel to Jamaica. The first week of March saw his return. He accepted his job at Kemsley newspapers without compromise—this portion of the year would be set aside for Jamaica or he would look elsewhere for employment.
For 6 years Fleming traveled each winter to Jamaica, lounging in paradise, romancing women, chasing the sunset, but it was not until he faced the pressure of a married woman who was pregnant with his child did Fleming start the writer's journey
which would change his life and popular culture forever. As Fleming waited in Jamaica for Anne's divorce to become final, he wrote the first draft of a novel, Casino Royale.
Fleming's career as a writer deserves more examination than can be offered here, but suffice it to say, over the next 12 years, Ian Fleming transformed his elite existence, his arrogance, his style, and his acid wit into some of the greatest thrillers ever written. Fleming incurred the respect of authors as diverse as Raymond Chandler, Kingsley Amis, and Edith Sitwell. His fans included John, Jackie, and Bobby Kennedy, and his social circle included Prime Minister Anthony Eden, Evelyn Waugh, and Somerset Maugham.
Fleming filled out the 12 years of Bond with great adventure journalism. Even in stories which had little action or pay off, such as his short non-fiction book, The Diamond Smugglers, the "Fleming-flair" ensured exciting reading. He wrote the "Atticus" column for the Sunday Times, proving a wonderful conduit for inside intelligence information, and clever rebukes (指责).
Regardless of book sales or family obligations, Fleming managed to live the life he wanted. As the years passed, his passion for golfing increased so he took more time with it. Fleming's long-term fascination with America grew, so he traveled there more often.
Ian Fleming's full life caught up with him through his heart. It may be that years of drinking and smoking took their toll, or that the butter-rich cooking Fleming loved was the culprit. Or maybe it was just genetics. Whatever the cause, Fleming's health declined in the late 1950s. This plus anxieties in the marriage increased Fleming's depression. With the success of Bond, the world came knocking at Fleming's door, and he had a harder time
shutting those out that he did not want in his life.
Nonetheless, Fleming fought the loosing battle of his weakening heart by throwing more fuel on the fire. He continued to drink and smoke, making some excuses but not many. He wrote books he wanted to read, and traveled the world with style and authority. By this time, Fleming had already earned his own fortune, created his own identity, and ruled his own literary empire.(1)According to the second paragraph, Fleming accepted the job offered by Kemsley newspaper ________.
A. and had to give up his yearly holiday plan to Jamaica
B. because he was offered to work in Jamaica every winter
C. so that he wouldn't have to look for employment elsewhere
D. on condition that he took two months off to Jamaica every year
(2)What led Fleming follow the path of writing?
A. His dream to be a writer.
B. The pressure from a woman.
C. His potential for literature.
D. His state of health.
(3)When he began writing, Fleming never expected that ________.
A. he would change popular culture
B. he could get over the pressure
C. Anne would have a divorce
D. Anne would keep his child
(4)Fleming's thrillers reflected his ________.
A. sense for popular culture
B. relationship with Anne
C. own personalities
D. life at Jamaica
(5)The fact that "Fleming filled out the 12 years of Bond with great adventure journalism" shows that ________.
A. Fleming took up journalism when he finished Bond's adventures
B. Fleming put Bond through many thrilling adventures
C. Fleming described Bond as an adventurous journalist
D. Fleming experienced Bond's adventures when he was a journalist
(6)According to the passage, Fleming died of ________.
A. an unidentified reason
