How Green Are Your Jeans?
Part One
Warming Up
Jeans are one of the most widely worn articles of clothing. Millions of pairs are produced every year. Our wardrobes are filled with different styles, fits, and shades of denim. Women, especially, search for the latest pair-skinnies, flair, boot cut, highwaisted, low-waisted, acid washed, the list goes on and on. But what about the environmental impact of each pair? Researchers say that 1500 gallons of water are dedicated toward the cotton used to make one pair of jeans. Once cotton is ready for production, it is dyed in a chemical solvent that is full of oil. The dye that is left over has to go somewhere, and so chemicals are often left spilling into the rest of our environment. The next step often includes sandblasting or stone washing the jeans. Those faded spots and lines on your jeans did not just appear out of nowhere. This process requires a lot of machine energy and, unfortunately, more water. Once a consumer takes a pair of jeans home, there is an even greater chance of environmental disturbance. Nearly 3.5 liters of water is used on one pair of jeans alone each time you wash them. With an average American female having 8 pairs of jeans, that water waste adds up quickly. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. recorded that in 2009, 12.7 million tons of waste was attributed to the textile industry. That is over ten pounds per person in the U.S. alone. If we continue with these habits, there will be more waste than we know what to do with. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to help. Clearly it would be ridiculous and unrealistic to ask anyone to flat out stop wearing jeans; they are an American staple.

1. 2. 3.ng statements. Decide whether they are true (T) or false (F). A chemical substance is widely applied in the process of preparing the cotton for jean production. F After a pair of jeans has been bought and brought to home, less water is needed. F American people can be persuaded not to wear jeans even though they are typically American. F Before you buy a pair of jeans, you should conduct research on the manufacturer to decide whether it is eco-friendly or not. T Due to the recycling of jeans trends, jeans sold in secondhand stores can be in fashion. T Old-fashioned or old jeans can be converted into different objects, such as purses or wallets. T People should be encouraged to buy clothes which don’t go out of fashion and which match with different outfits, instead of buying fashionable items all the time. T People are encouraged to go shopping at a local or secondhand Key Clear store as well as big shopping malls. F
In this unit, you are expected to learn how people try to live green lives in different ways; how to formulate, and solve problems; how to launch a campaign of green living at campus level.
