There is a nine-year-old kid sitting at his desk and all of a sudden, a pool of water forms between his feet and the front of his pants are wet.
He thinks his heart is beating fastest because he cannot possibly imagine how this has happened. It’s never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they’ll never speak to him again as long as he lives. The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and says this prayer (祷告), “Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from now I’m dead meat.” He looks up fro m his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.
As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and u nbelievably pours the bowl of water in the boy’s lap.
The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, “Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!”
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of being laughed at, the boy is the object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym shorts to put on while his pants dry out.

I was in my home office on a boring Sunday in May 2020 when I looked out of the window and saw my dad’s car parked in my driveway. I had thought I mistook another person for my dad. However, when I looked at the man
carefully again, I found that he was indeed my dad. He was walking from the front door to his car and was just about to drive away. Why would he drive all the way to my house, only to turn around and leave? Had the doorbell stopped working? Was something wrong?
I raced downstairs, opened the door, and cried out, “Dad!” just before he made it out of the driveway. He looked up in surprise, and stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I asked.
My dad lived one hour away. I hadn’t seen him in person since COVID- 19 was declared a pandemic (流行病) two months earlier. We were all following the health guidelines of self-isolation (自我隔离) and wouldn’t leave the house unless it was absolutely necessary, so it was strange that Dad would just show up. My dad smiled and pointed at something beside the door, where I could see what looked like a plant wrapped up in wrapping paper.
“Open it,” he said.
I opened it and found a bright yellow begonia (秋海棠) plant. It came to me that it was Mother ’s Day, and I had seen many women posting pictures on social media of the lovely flowers they had received from kids and husbands. Waving his hand, Dad drove off.
Later that day, I made a phone call to thank him, letting him know how touched I was to know that he had made a two-hour round trip just to leave a begonia on my doorstep. His act of love really brightened my day.
“I’m sad that I couldn’t hug you. Dad, I love you,” I said.
“Me, too,” he replied with a big smile.
We got talking about the pandemic and how difficult it was to go so long without hugs and kisses from family. That was when my dad let me in on his little secret.
Paragraph 1:It turned out that he did several acts of kindness in a couple of weeks.

Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were going to drive from New
York to Virginia to visit relatives. She could not wait. She had missed playing with her cousins and talking to her aunt and uncle.
After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Joan’s dad looked to Joan and her mother. “Is everyone ready for our road trip?” They both grinned (露齿而笑) and nodded.
It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed that the car began to veer (突然变向) to the side of the road.
Joan’s father got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great si gh. He poked his head through the passenger side window. “We have a flat tire,” he said to Joan’s mom.
“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia,” she suggested. Joan’s father looked down at his feet sheepishly (羞怯地). “I ... haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”
Her mother seemed frustrated (沮丧), but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,” she suggested.
But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no reception in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly (茫然地) at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.
Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center.
Joan looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia? Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

Before I turned 10, I lost my parents. My siblings(兄弟姐妹) left Hyderabad after relatives adopted them, but I insisted on staying back to continue my education. I lived alone in a room that a family member allowed me to use rent-free. To support myself, I began to deliver newspapers.
I would be up every morning by 5 am and walk five kilometers to the newspaper office. By 6 am, I would collect 50copies of Manzil (Urdu Daily)-the bundle(一捆)must have weighed over 5 kilograms. My beat (工作区域)spanned(跨越)3kilometers. After distributing(分发)the copies, I would rush home-another 3 kilometers-quickly eat and be off to high school.
On a cold winter morning, I got home after my deliveries to find a boy of my age at my doorstep. He introduced himself as Afzal and said his father wanted to see me.
I was greeted at the d oor by Afzal’s mother, Naseem. She served tea and snacks as Afzal’s father, Mr. Kader, joined us. She gently asked me about my daily routine. I told her about my morning job.
Later,as I was about to leave after thanking them, Mr. Kader asked me to wait. Naseem asked me,”How many miles do you walk every day?”
“A little more than six.” I replied. My reply shocked her.
“That’s too much! You must be really tired every day.” Naseem looked at me with misty eyes.
“I have been used to that.” I said, managing a s mile.

When I was a child, my mother often took me to a nursing home where I enjoyed spending time with the old people.
One day, a very old lady named Mrs. Kurtz seemed sad. For days, I had never seen her smile or laugh. My
parents learned that she had no family or friends. Mrs. Smith, one of the old people told me that Mrs. Kurtz had turned eighty-nine, and that she was upset to be celebrating another birthday all alone without any cards or gifts. She truly believed there was no one in the world who loved her.
This moved me deeply, and I started to create a plan in my mind. I ran home and raced to my room. I took out my piggy bank (储钱罐) that I always valued. I raced down the stairs and explained to my mother what I was about to do. And she smiled at me proudly. She planted a kiss on my cheek and said, “I must be the luckiest mother i n the world to have such a caring daughter.”

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, you should always think of other people and try to help other people.
One night after going to class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a take-out, I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes(边缘) of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity(慷慨). But to me, it was what any ”human being“ should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table, I asked him to order whatever he wanted. Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. “No Santa Claus?” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. “Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money, and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for.
I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-t wo class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for break during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t hav e a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I chose a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
