Grammar (number and concord)A.1. arecf. The Koreans are a hard-working people.2. are3. wasTwo units linked by "and" may sometimes be viewed as combined into one whole, and then the singular verb is rightly used, e.g.A cart and horse was seen in the distance. There was a cup and saucer on the table.4. seems"Tea years seems" that period seems." Plural phrases of measure or quantity may be viewed as a single unit,, e.g. Five miles was (=That distance was) as far as they went that day.Five pounds doesn't (= That amount doesn't) buy as much as it used to.Note that in the last example we use the pronoun "it."5. am6. wasThe water was gone. Compare:The town has often suffered from flooding, and this year nearly half is under water (the town is under water).About half of the children were severely undernourished (thechildren were undernourished).7. were8. are, their hands9. consistscf. Lesson Eleven, Notes to the Text, 3;Exercis IV A.10. was11. is"This kind of books" means the same as "this kind of book," because we are only interested in the "type,"and no longer concerned whether it is one book ormore than one. After "this kind of. . . " we use thesingular verb, e.g.This kind of man/men annoys me.But if we rephrase the sentence to express the idea of plurality, a plural verb may be used, e.g.Books of this kind are interesting.12. are"These/those kind of + plural noun," though not so acceptable to some grammarians, is common in speech and followed by a plural verb, e.g.These kind of cigarettes are tremendously expensive. "These kind of books" can be rephrased , without change in meaning, into any of the following more acceptable ways of expression: this kind of book(s)/these kinds of book(s)/books of this kind/books like this/ such books.13. is14. have readThe focus is on the group. Some students have read the book and John is one of them.15. has readThe focus is on the individual. 0nly John has read the book.16. are17. is18. wasB.1. d"They (them, their)" is often used, especially in speech to refer to "everybody," "somebody," "no-body," or other similar singular words, e.g.If anybody calls, tell them I'm out.Everyone thinks they're the center of the universe. Everybody has arrived, haven't they? This can avoid using such clumsy expressions as ". . .hasn't he or she?"2. a/bWhen "turn" means "become," the predicative noun takes zero article, e.g.He was a medical student before he turned writer. When the subject is plural, the predicative noun is more often singular than plural, e.g.Both sisters turned musician(s).3. b4. a/b/c/dIn an informal style, it is possible to use "there is" before plural noun phrases when we regard "there" as the subject of the sentence, e.g.There's some children at the door.5. dThe speaker supposes there are several kinds of pear tree and is asking what they are. cf.What kind of pear tree flourishes best ... ? (He has only one kind in mind.)6. a /cThe verb agrees with the noun after "loads of," e.g.Loads of big apples were on the ground."Go to waste" means "be wasted."7. a/b"His wife and secretary" can refer to the one and same person, but not necessarily. "His" can be omitted before "secretary."8. c"Butter" is implied after "good." cf.Both the immature and the precocious student need individual attention (there is a "student" omitted after "immature").9. a"Whisky and soda" is one kind of drink which is a concoction of whisky and soda. cf.Bread and butter (= bread spread with butter) is all that is provided with the tea. But:Bread and butter (=both bread and butter) are sold in the shop on the corner.10. a/b/c/d"None" is followed by either a singular or plural verb as senserequires. Only the singular is correct in:The company has ordered more coal, but none of the coal has yet arrived (the coal has not yet arrived)The plural is correct in:None of the workers in this factory have gone on strike (All the workers do not go on strike). In this last sentence however, the singular verb would also be correct, since "none of the workers" can be viewed as equivalent to the singular: Not one hasgone on strike. The choice may also be governed by other factors, as in:None of them is the man I met this morning (I met one man only)None of the members have paid their subscriptions (to avoid saying "his or her subscription").Where the choice is free, the plural is more common.C.1. is (The thing I want is two books.)/are (What I want is not one book.)When "what" can be interpreted either as "the thing that" or as "the things that," the following verb can accordingly be either singular or plural, e.g.What he enjoys is/are geography and French.Traditionally however, the singular verb has been favoured in such cases. Only the singular verb is possible in sentences like: What hurts is my left leg. What I'd like is a digital watch.2. has, its (The promises were made by the committee collectively.)/have, their (It is possible each member,of the committee made their own promises.)3. makes/make4. deserveThis is a different case from B/10, above, because it is a quotation from the 17th century English poet John Dryden, and as such, its wording is not to be readily changed. In fact, "none but" has come to be treated as one word meaning "only", leaving "the brave" in the position of the subject which naturally requires a plural verb. Here are more examples: None but fools are/None but a fool is interested in such things. None but the best coffee is to my taste. The quotation (now a proverb) means: Only brave men deserve beautiful women.5. have (cf. A, 6)6. isThat is a single rose which has a bit of white and a bit of blue on it. cf. The white and blue roses are....7. is (cf. A, 4)8. isAlthough "more than one" is plural in meaning, the grammatical subject is "one student." The singular verb is therefore correct in:No than one person was injured in the accident.9. is10. has11. are (= What I say and what I think are ...12. isThe two are inseparable. More examples:War and peace is a constant theme in history. We're at the beginning of a period in which real negotiation and compromise is possible (Henry Kissinger).13. are14. is,15. is16. is (= Each man and woman ...)Linked units introduced by "each" or "every" require a singularverb, because "each" and "every" focus on the individual units separately, eg.Each room and (each) corridor in the building has been painted in the same color.Every man and (every) woman is required to complete two years of national service.17. is (cf. 16)18. is/are19. consists20. knows/know (cf. B, 10)VII. Don't worry. You may be able to say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag in the near future.Instead of burying(埋葬) your face in an ocean of textbooks, newspapers, magazines and novels, you will soon find that an E﹣book reader can take the place of them all.An E﹣book reader is a new kind of mini machine designed to hold thousands of text files and display them on the screen as real text printed(印刷) on a paper page.In the same way in which the iPod(a kind of MP3)has changed the way people enjoy music, E﹣book readers could change the way that books are read. Some scientists haveThe size of an E﹣book reader is the same as that of real books. Its screen is different from that of a computer. It is as thin as a piece of paper. The words on an E﹣book reader's screen look exactly the same as those on real pages. However, you can do more with an E﹣book reader than you can with a real book. The reader can change the size of the words and connect to the Internet to download new books.(1)Which of the following is TRUE about an E﹣book reader?________A. It makes us lose interest in learning knowledgeB. An E﹣book reader can display text files as clearly as real text printed on a paper pageC. The essay concentrates on that Victorian ___phantom_____ known as the ___the angel in the house_______ (borrowed from Coventry Patmore’s poem)—that selfless__, sacrificial__ woman in the nineteenth century whose sole purpose in life was to soothe, to flatter, and to comfort the male__ half of the world’s population. “Killing __the angel in the house___,” wrote Virginia Woolf, “was part of the occupation_ of a woman writer.”That has proved to be a ___ prophetic__ statement, for today, not only in the domain__of letters(文学界), but in the __entire____ professional world, women are still engaged in that deadly contest in their struggle for social and economic__equality______.She stresses her dexterity to fight against what society has in mind for women like her, encouraging women to be whom they want to be. In doing so, she hopes to have cracked the glass ______ceiling______ that holds women from their natural rights.Virginia Woolf uses clear diction when she depicts three unique metaphors: ___the angel in the house_____, __the_fisherman___, and __the empty room___. While telling the story of the Angel of the House, she showed a lthough the Angel was “pure,” if she were not __rid of_____, she would have “plucked ___the heart out of her writing_____” so instead, Woolf kille d her. The author then describes the metaphor of the __fisherman____ in the form of a girl. In the girl’s dream, she let her “_imagination___ sweep unchecked round every ___rock___ and ___cranny____ of the world” able to explore and thinkwhat she wanted t o without a second thought. Then before the fisherman knew it, her “line” was lost, her imagination “dashed__” into “something hard,” and the girl was “roused from her dream.” By telling about the fisherman, she was able to show how censored woman’s minds were because they were always “i mpeded___(阻碍) by the extreme conventionality__ (惯例、习俗、老套) of the other sex.”2. Invisible Man is written by __Ralph____ ___Ellison_____, and this novel won him the National Book Award for fiction and catapulted__ him to national ____prominence______. Because Invisible Man is a bildungsroman (an __education___ novel or a _coming-of-age____ kind of novel that chronicles a character’s ___psychological____, ____moral_____ and ____social____ growth), the narrative and thematic concerns of the story revolve around the development of the narrator as an individual. The first chapter focuses on a gathering of the town's most ___prestigious/important____ white citizens held the day after the narrator's graduation. Because of the narrator's well-received ___oration/speech_____ at graduation, he is asked to repeat his speech at the gathering, which he deems a great honor. Upon arriving at the fancy ballroom, he learns that before his speech he must first _participate____ in the "battle royal" to be fought by several black boys hired for the __occasion___. The boys are led into the main hall where the narrator is shocked at the drunkenness of many of the town's most respected members. Half naked, the boys are only part of the night's____ entertainment ____. Pushed to the front of the hall, they are brought into full view of a naked, blond woman who is expected to dance for the crowd. The incredible humiliation of the scene causes most of the boys to want to run away but they are kept in place as the white men of the group chase the terrified woman around the room. The next event of the night directly involves the narrator and other boys; they are all made to wear ____ blindfolds ___ and enter the boxing ring. Covered in ___darkness_____, voices from the smoky room yell jeers and taunts to the boys until they are incited to fight. The fighting becomes hysterical and crazed, though slightly less tortuous for the narrator when he maneuvers his blindfold in such a manner to allow a little vision and more control over his fights. Suddenly, however, he is left in the ring as one of the final two who must fight until one wins. The narrator is mostly concerned that he will not get a chance to deliver__ his oration___, finally deciding to just fall to the floor with one of Tatlock's punches. The boys are then taunted one last time when the white men throw gold coins onto a carpet and encourage them to grab for the money. The carpet turns out to be electrified, and a jolt_____ is received by anyone touching a coin. The narrator attempts to grab as many coins as possible without touching the carpet and does so, almost throwing a seated white man onto the carpet by holding onto his chair leg. The narrator is then finally allowed to give his speech during which the men do not even bother to listen. Regardless, the narrator receives a scholarship at the end of the night and is so pleased that he ignores the earlier ___humiliation__ and the voice of his dying grandfather which continues to haunt_____ him in his dreams. The grandfather is a device used by Ellison to foreshadow heavily the rest of the novel as well as enhance the illustrations presented during the chapter. Appearing at the beginning and the end, the grandfather provides a lesson to the young narrator which his parents then tell him to ignore. The guilt of treachery____ that his grandfather instills in him follows him into the gathering of white men and ends the chapter haunting him in a dream that, he notes, he has dreamt often since. The experience of the gathering is the beginning of a race against himself, as the grandfather writes in the dream: "keep this nigger-boy running____".The idea of invisibility surfaces most within the chapter during the speech, which the narrator has continued to practice for even in the most humiliating______ of moments. Increasing the hypocrisy embedded in the upright citizens gathering, the men not only fail to listen to the speech but yell to the narrator to speak up when his throat is choked by blood. Nauseated and overwhelmed, he makes the mistake of saying "social equality" instead of "social responsibility" and is almost thrown out of the room. Only by thoroughly swallowing the hypocrisy___ of the room and the events he has had to participate in can he finally exit___ the scene without further harm. Sadly, the narrator accepts this prize as an award well worth his humiliation___. He cannot yet understand his grandfather's message because he still refuses to spit out the blood and speak for himself.。
