We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people: “ Did Jerry really care when I said goodbye to Helen? ” “ When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or
did he envy my luck? ” When we look back, questions like these can make us feel bad, but when we look back, it's too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes people's words hide real meaning. If we don't really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “ You are a lucky dog. ” Is he really on your side? If he says, “ You are a lucky boy. ” or “ You are a lucky girl. ” , that's being friendly. However, for a“ lucky dog” , there's a bit of envy in the“ dog” . He doesn't think you should have such good luck.
“ Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another example that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problems as part of your life as a whole. But is he? He really means that your problem can't be important. It's telling you to think of all the poor people in hunger and cold in the world when you haven't got a date(约会)for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Do his words square with(与……一致)the tone(声调)of his voice? His posture(姿势)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of his words to you may save another mistake.

A. the speaker of the sentence is just being friendly
B. the same as “ You are a lucky boy. ” or “You are a lucky girl. ”
C. sometimes the words used by a speaker don't show the feeling behind the words
D. the word “ dog” shows a bit of envy
()8. In Paragraph 3, the sentence “ Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” means .

听第二篇短文, 完成第16—20小题.
It was not a good day for Maya. Everything was going wrong. First, she woke up late and didn't have time to eat breakfast. And when she packed her schoolbag, she couldn't find her ruler.
“Let me help you, ” said her brother, Abdul. He found her ruler on the floor. “Let's run to the bus stop, ” he said. “ We'll just make it. ”
But she forgot to bring her homework and the teacher was unhappy about that. The teacher gave her writing homework to do the next day. On the way home, it started o rain. She dropped her books on the ground as she got off the bus.
Abdul got off the bus just behind her. “ Don't worry, ” he said. “ If we take them home and dry them quickly, they will be all right. ”
“ Thanks, Abdul, ” said Maya.
That night Maya sat down to do her homework. But when she read the topic of the writing homework, she smiled. The teacher wrote at the top of the page, “ Write
about your best friend. Tell us what you like best about him or her. ” She thought for a while and started to write, “ The best thing about my brother Abdul. ”。
