A ten-year-old from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (坚持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.
That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure (身影) that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.
Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if
there was any truth to Danny’s hunch (直觉). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Millions of Americans sit behind a computer screen, chained to their desk all day because the vast majority of stable, high-paying professions(职业) are “office jobs”. However, having a successful career does not require you to sit behind a desk and plug away at a computer all day.
In fact, there are a large number of non-desk jobs in a variety of industries that are growing and offering workers a direct path to the middle class, according to a new
analysis of labor market information from CareerBuilder. While most of the highest-paying non-desk jobs are medical professions that require a doctoral or professional degree, there are 170 non-desk professions that pay $15 per hour or more, do not require a bachelor’s degree(学士学位) for a typical entry-level position, and have seen at least 6 percent job growth over the last four years.
“The US workforce has gradually changed to office-based work because of the rise of the professional service economy and productivity gains associated with information technology,” Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder, said in a statement. “But some of the he althiest areas of job growth year after year are in middle-skill professions that don’t require workers to sit in front of computer monitors and phones for 40 hours a week.”
Here are the top-paying jobs that don’t require you to work at a desk in various kinds —none of which require a four-year college degree —and their hourly salary(工资) and growth rate since 2010: professional assistants(助理) : $26.57, 14 percent; elevator repairers: $37.81, 6 percent; mechanical engineering technicians: $25.19, 10 percent; and electromechanical(电动机械的) technicians: $24.68, 8 percent.
While they tend to pay less than traditional office jobs, non-desk professions provide a variety of benefits. Haefner points to a 2014 CareerBuilder survey that discovered workers who don’t wo rk at a desk all day are less likely to complain about their work environment and less likely to report being overweight.
28. What does the underlined phrase “plug away” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Turn off a switch.
B. Look for a job.
C. Keep on working.
D. Give up working.
29. What conclusion can we draw from the second paragraph?
A. A non-desk job may provide you with a middle-class life.
B. The last four years has seen an increase in desk jobs.
C. The college degree is the ticket to a position.
D. A non-desk job cannot offer you a secure life.
30. What is the key reason for the US workforce to change to office-based work?
A. High salary.
B. Medicine.
C. Information technology.
D. Service industries.
31. Which job has grown the fastest since 2010?
A. Elevator repairers.
B. Professional assistants.

MacDonald paused a moment in front of the burning car. Flames six feet tall poured from the engine, the smell of melting rubber heavy in the air. For a few seconds, MacDonald thought about whether the car would explode, killing them both. He thought about how lucky he was to have already just survived a head-on collision between his truck and the red Chevy Cobalt now in flames. Was he ready to risk his life to save the man that he believed could have ended his?
The two-vehicle collision happened at 3:44 p.m. on Monday south of Newmarket. MacDonald was heading to work when, he says, another car swerved into his lane, hitting him head-on. Soon after the collision, the other driver’s car burst into flames with him trapped inside. MacDonald, 25, came to a decision. He would try to save the man’s life. He ran to the car. The driver’s side door was blocked but the passenger’s door was pushed open by the driver, a 64-year-old man now barely conscious. Hardly noticing the heat, MacDonald opened the door and grabbed the shoulder of the drive r’s jacket. He dragged the man about 15 feet before two bystanders came to help him pull the man to a safe distance. Moments later the entire car was on fire.
The police confirmed the other driver was charged with careless driving. MacDonald escaped the crash with whiplash, sore muscles and wrists from the airbag release, and a headache. The other driver received serious but non-life threatening injuries, said the police.
MacD onald is just grateful that both of them came out alive. “I’m just glad I stood up when I was needed,” said Mac D onald. “You only get a couple of chances in your life
to prove what you are made of.”

第二节
In the future, man’s life will be very different from that of today. First, with the development of medicine, on the average, a person will live to the age of about 120.
Second, because of the discovery of new energy, the environmental pollution will be under control. Third, people’s daily life will change greatly, too. For example, robots will do all your housework for you; your chair will change its color to match what you’re wearing; perhaps some people will go to the moon for a holiday.

Text 10
M: Growing crops in containers saves water. It needs little fertilizer(肥料). In addition, the chemicals cannot run off into nearby waterways. The same earth mixture can be used for five or six years.
Since Earth Boxes went on sale in 1994, many people around the world have used them. Other people have made their own vegetable growing boxes. Some use two
large plastic containers. One container has holes in the bottom and sits inside the other box. Earth mixture goes into the top container, and water goes through a tube into the bottom box. A plastic trash bag is then used to cover the top container.
Some people think this kind of gardening will be important to people in poor countries where hunger is a problem. A lot of food can be grown in a small space for a small amount of money.
The people who make Earth Boxes are interested in educating young people. They have developed a program aimed at teaching students science and agriculture. When children first enter elementary school, they learn about water, soil, light, and nutrition. In middle school, they do experiments and collect information. In high school, they learn how to use math to better understand what happens when plants grow. The learning program includes written materials for teachers and students. And it uses an Earth Box in the classroom as a small laboratory for experiments.。
