Forcing waiters and waitresses to survive on tips from customers rather than normal wages is a pointless, crude, and unique American custom that, in the past several years, a handful of progressive restaurant owners have attempted to do away with. Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group, is about to join their ranks and has announced that he plans to gradually stop tipping at the company's 13 restaurants.
What, exactly, is wrong with tipping? As Brian Palmer has explained, more or less it's everything. To start, leaving a waiter's pay in the hands of customers has a feeling of classism And in theory, handing restaurant customers the power to tip is at least supposed to motivate better service. This fails in practice because humans turn out to be pretty arbitrary (随意的) about their tipping behavior. Research has shown that the amount diners tip has very little
to do with their level of satisfaction. All of this doesn't encourage waiters and waitresses to do anything but turn over as many tables as possible.
Tipping is also very unfair to kitchen staff. The law allows restaurants to divide tips between front-of-the-house workers like waiters, hosts, hostesses, and bartenders (调酒师), but not cooks. This creates a system in which the people serving the food in a restaurant can earn more than the people preparing it.
One of the most fascinating parts of Meyer's move is that, unlike some restaurant owners who have taken an anti-tipping stand, he won't simply add a standard extra charge to diners' bills. Rather, Union Square Hospitality Group means to raise menu prices enough to fully cover the cost of a meal. If Meyer manages to move away from tipping at all without hurting his profits, it would almost certainly set the stage for others to follow suit.
(1)What's Danny Meyer's attitude towards stopping tipping?
A. Negative.
B. Supportive.
C. Objective.
D. Doubtful.
(2)What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Tipping may disturb the restaurants' management.
B. Tipping will guarantee diners high quality service.
C. Tipping can arouse the staff's enthusiasm for work.
D. Tipping will bring customers a sense of satisfaction.
(3)What can we know about Union Square Hospitality group?
A. Brian Palmer is in charge of it now.
B. Its cooks earn much more than its servers.
C. Restaurant tipping has been totally banned there.
D. Diners will be charged more for the dishes there.
(4)What is the topic of the passage?
A. Restaurants' getting rid of tipping.
B. Difficulties that restaurants are faced with.
C. The popularity of no-tipping restaurants.
D. Tips on running restaurants successfully.
【答案】(1)B
(2)A
(3)D
(4)A

根据第一段中的“Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group, is about to join their ranks and has announced that he plans to gradually stop tipping at the company's 13 restaurants.”

根据第二段中的“leaving a waiter's pay in the hands of customers has a feeling of classism (阶级歧视).This fails in practice because humans turn out to be pretty arbitrary (随意的) about their tipping behavior.”和“All of this doesn't encourage waiters and waitresses to do anything but turn over as many tables as possible.”

根据最后一段中的“Ra ther, Union Square Hospitality Group means to raise menu prices enough to fully cover the cost of a meal.”

根据第一段中的“Danny Meyer, …… has announced that he plans to gradually stop tipping at the company's 13 restaurants.”

"Tomorrow is another day" — this line has impressed various people at various times. It's now 70 years after it appeared in the film, but it still seems to hold its power especially during an economic downturn.
The phrase comes from a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's successful 1936 novel Gone With the Wind. It's set in the American South and tells the story of a strong heroine, Scarlett O' Hara, who struggles to find love during the Civil War and, afterwards, of her strength in surviving the war and its hardships.
Love story
In a moment of despair, Scarlett finally realizes that her love belongs to Rhett Butler. For many audiences, it is the theme of love and struggle that has kept the movie alive. While the burning of Atlanta might seem irrelevant (不相关的) to today's viewers, the timeless theme of love keeps its ability to touch people.
With a promise to her lover still in her mind, Scarlett chooses to stay in the midst of war and take care of Melanie. But her heart is broken when Rhett just walks away, leaving the woman that he once loved with cruel words, "Frankly, dear, I don't give a damn."
Great epic (史诗)
The film shows the love-hate relationship of these characters, but also American history, the fall of the Confederacy and the following period of Reconstruction in the South. The background made this film a true classic in the epic genre.
When the film opened after World War II, French viewers loved it, and it reminded them of their fight against the Nazis. In 1940 Shanghai, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (侵略), people stood in line for hours to watch this film, and saw the same suffering they were having as well as the hope and possibility of building a new homeland from the ruins. Each nationality could identify with the story and see it as a victory. In fact, Gone With the Wind never lost its charm and ability to inspire and amaze.
Biggest of all time
The film had five directors, 15-plus screenwriters, and an unexpected $3.9 million budget. The film brought in $200 million, which makes it the biggest selling film of all times in North America. It also won 10 Academy awards in 1940.
(1)The underlined word "it" in the first paragraph refers to ______.
A. the novel Gone with the Wind
B. "tomorrow is another day"
C. the movie Gone with the Wind
D. the Academy Award
(2)The text is written mainly to ______.
A. celebrate the anniversary of Margaret Mitchell
B. introduce how the film was directed and filmed
C. throw light on (阐述) the charm of the movie "Gone with the Wind"
D. inspire people to struggle the economic downturn
(3)It can be concluded that Scarlett O' Hara is ______.
A. optimistic and lucky
B. childish and realistic
C. caring and stubborn
D. strong-minded and persistent (坚毅的)
(4)The passage mentions Shanghai in order to ______.
A. prove that the background of the movie touched viewers
B. describe how popular the movie was at that time
C. point out that Shanghai was a center of entertainment
D. tell us that Chinese were suffering the War then
【答案】(1)B
(2)C
(3)D
(4)A

Education is not a bystanders sport. Numerous researchers have shown that when students participate in classroom discussion they hold more positive attitudes toward school, and that positive attitudes promote learning. It is no coincidence that girls are more passive in the classroom discussion and score lower than boys on SATs.
We found that at all grade levels in all communities and in all subject areas boys controlled classroom communication. They participated in more interactions than girls did, and their participation became greater as the year went on.
Our research contradicted the traditional assumption that girls control classroom communication in reading while boys in math. We found that whether the subject was language arts and English or math and science, boys got more than their fair share of teacher attention. That teachers talk more to male students is simply because boys are more aggressive in grabbing their attention by calling out answers to the teachers' questions first. While girls sit patiently with their hands raised or keep silent. Psychologist Lisa Serbin and K.Daniel O'Leary, then at the state university of New York at stony brook studied classroom interaction at preschool level and found that teachers gave boys more attention, praised them more often and were at least twice as likely to have extended conversations with them.
Years of experience have shown that the best way to learn something is to do it yourself. It is also important to give students specific and direct feedback about the quality of their work and answers. Teachers behave differently depending on whether boys or girls are active to provide answers during discussions. During classroom discussion, teachers in our study reacted to boys answers with powerful, precise and effective responses, while they often gave girls mild and unclear reactions because of their silence. Too often, girls remain in the dark about the quality of their answers. Active students receiving precise feedback are more likely to achieve academically. And they are more likely to be boys.
This kind of communication game is played at work, as well as at school. As reported in numerous studies, it goes like this.
Men speak more often and frequently interrupt women.
Listeners recall more from male speakers than from female speakers, even when both use a similar speaking style and cover the same content.
Women participate less actively in conversation. They do more smiling and gazing, and they are more often the passive by standers in professional and social conversations among peers. Women often their own statements into unsure comments. This is accomplished by using qualifiers and by adding tag question. These uncertain patterns weaken impact and signal a lack of power and influence.
Only when girls are active and treated equally in the classroom will they be more likely to achieve equality in the workplace.
(1)What does the authors mean when they say“Education is not a bystanders sport.”? A. Both boys and girls should do more sports. B. The girl students should be the audience to watch the boy students' discussions.
C. The boy students should not be too active in the classroom discussions.
D. Both boy and girl students should take an active part in the classroom discussions.
(2)Which of the following is Not true?
A. Girls' scores are lower than boys on SATs.
B. Girls control classroom discussion in reading while boys in maths.
C. Boys control classroom discussion in both reading and maths.
D. Boys are more confident
in calling out answers to catching the teachers' attention.
(3)The factors that contribute to the students' effective learning are the following except__________.
A. The students can take an active part in the classroom discussion
B. The students do it themselves
C. Teachers can give students specific and direct feedback the quality of their work and answers
D. Students transform their own statements into uncertain comments
【答案】(1)D
(2)B
(3)D

根据第三段中的“Our research contradicted the traditional assumption that girls control classroom communication in reading while boys in math. We found that whether the subject was language arts and English or math and science, boys got more than their fair share of teacher attention.”

根据第一段中的“Numerous researchers have shown that when students participate in classroom discussion they hold more positive attitudes toward school, and that positive attitudes promote learning.”可知,A项“学生们能够积极参与课堂讨论”是对的;根据第四段的“Years of exp erience have shown that the best way to learn something is to do it yourself. It is also important to give students specific and direct feedback about the quality of their work and answers. ”可知,多年的经验表明,最好的学习方法是自己去做。

给学生关于他们的工作和答案的质量的具体而直接的反馈也是很重要的。

故B、C都是有利的因素;而D项“学生们将自己的陈述转化为不确定的评论”文章中没有提到。

故选D。

【点评】本题考点涉及细节理解和推理判断两个题型的考查,是一篇教育类阅读,考生需要准确掌握细节信息,并根据上下文进行逻辑推理,从而选出正确答案。

5.阅读理解
A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night's wrong decision—a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym's 21-day
workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train for a marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions wouldn't be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn't disturb my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that "wanting" and "doing" are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that's hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment, too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn't. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
(1)What was the author's wrong decision?
A. Going to the gym early.
B. Training for a marathon.
C. Eating a lot the previous night.
D. Stopping being lazy for a change.
(2)What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Some of the author's bad habits.
B.Some ways of the author's killing his spare time.
C.The importance of sticking to the normal daily routine.
D.The difficulty of the author's keeping on with the workout plan.
(3)What does the underlined word "sabotage" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Prevent.
B.Hear.
C.Improve.
D.Distinguish.
(4)What did the author learn from the workout challenge?
A.Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B.Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
C.It's more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
D.There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.
【答案】(1)C
(2)D
(3)A
(4)B

根据第一段中的“As I was burning off last night's wrong decision—a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym's 21-day workout challenge”可知,昨晚我做了一个错误的决定:吃了一顿大餐。

根据第二段中的“It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise r outines and diet restrictions wouldn't be easy.”

根据第三段中的“Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising.”

” 由“However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.”

根据第四段的“At the end of the challenge, I learned som ething even more important: I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter …I felt a sense of accomplishment…I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.”

83-year-old Antonio Vicente has spent the last four decades of his life fighting against the trend. As Brazilian landowners cut down rainforests to make room for profitable plantations(种植园) and cattle grounds, he struggled to bring the jungles of his childhood back to life.
