The woman looked through the peephole (窥视孔) and saw a man. At first, she thought it was a salesman who might go away. When he didn’t, she decided to answer and see what he wanted. The man asked if a woman named Karen lived at the address. The woman answered that Karen was her mother, but she wasn’t home now. The man smiled, handed an envelope over and then walked away. When the woman saw the contents of the envelope, she was shocked. She then rushed out of the apartment to run after the man, but the stranger was gone.Inside the envelope was $1,000 in cash and a letter explaining where the money was from. “Please accept this gift. My late mother devoted much of her time and resources to helping people through Random (随机的) Acts of Kindness program. One way our family honors her is to keep the tradition with acts of random kindness. Although we do not know you personally, other members of our community identified you as a deserving recipient of this gift. Please use this money in any way you see fit.”Random Acts of Kindness does not have to involve the giving of money. It can be as simple as sharing your time with someone lending an ear, or offering a compliment (赞美). The most important part is that the act is done with no expectation of anything in return. It turned out that Karen had been battling cancer for three years. The illness left her financially struggling and this amount of money would really help her. We truly never know what someone is going through and how much a random act of kindness might help turn their life around. Earlier this summer, a 35-year-old Indiana woman, died from water toxicity (毒性作用) after drinking too much water in a short period of time, according to a local news report. While drinking enough water is important, overdoing it can lead to low levels of sodium (钠) in the blood, which can be life-threatening, according to Julia Zumpano, an expert at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.Exactly how much is enough for our body depends on a variety of factors, including our weight, age, location and overall health. People in poor health, or active people such as athletes, are at risk of water toxicity, as they tend to drink large amounts of water and lose sodium through their sweat (出汗). So are women and children because of their smaller body size. While the gold standard for many years has been eight glasses of 8 ounces (盎司) of water per day, the National Academy of Medicine suggests enough water intake is about 125 ounces for men and about 91 ounces for women. And it recommends not drinking more than 48 ounces of water per hour. This includes total water from fruits, vegetables and other drinks besides water. If you struggle with getting enough water per day, you can try water bottles to help track your water intake. Eating fruits and vegetables can also increase your water intake. You could experiment with adding flavor to improve the taste of your water and encourage drinking.“Most people had better keep drinking water throughout the day, but larger amounts may be needed in the heat for an extended period of time or during exercise. If you are thirsty for water—listen to your body. But don’t overdo it,” says Zumpano.28.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?A.By giving an example.B.By showing the findings.C.By making a comparison.D.By putting up a question.29.What effect may drinking too much water have on us?A.Putting on weight.B.Speeding up aging.C.Making us more active.D.Cutting sodium in blood.30.What do we know from paragraph 4?A.We must drink less than 48 ounces of water a day.B.Women can take in more water than men an hour.C.We’d better drink about 64 ounces of water every day.D.We can’t take in any water from fruits and vegetables.31.What can be the best title for the text?A.What is the result of water toxicity?B.How much water is too much water?C.Why do you find it difficult to drink enough water?D.How often need we remind ourselves to drink water?DAntarctic blue whales have been perceived again in the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. An international-team of researchers discovered the animals five decades after whaling (捕鲸业)nearly caused them to disappear forever. "The ocean resources at South Georgia were heavily developed during the early 20th-century industrial whaling," says lead author Susannah Calderan, an ecologist with the Scottish Association for Marine Science.Antarctic blue whales were plentiful in the area until whaling began there in 1904, kicking off the beginning of industrial whaling in the Southern Ocean. While hunters originally focused on species that could be easily caught, like the humpback whale, the focus quickly moved to the blue whale. Between 1904 and 1973, 345,775 Antarctic blue whales were killed in the Southern hemisphere (半球) and in the northern Indian Ocean. Around South Georgia, blue whale catches were reported year-round without stopping. Between 1904 and 1971, industrial whaling caused 42,698 blue whales' death. Blue whales almost disappeared in these areas.Researchers studied all Antarctic blue whale data from the last three decades. They examined sightings (目睹) from scientific surveys collected by observers on ships, as well as opportunistic sightings reported by seamen and ship passengers to the South Georgia. They also examined acoustic (声音的) recordings of blue whale. They found that whale surveys from ships off South Georgia resulted in just one blue whale sighting between 1998 and 2018. But more recent surveys suggest better news. A survey in February of 2020 found nearly 60 blue whale sightings, and several acoustic detections (探测). A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011 and 2020."Their return is very meaningful, as it was widely thought that blue whales at South Georgia might have been hunted beyond a point where they could recover, and might never be seen again in great numbers at South Georgia," Calderan says. "Our research shows that, populations can recover even from very low levels if they're given enough protection."32. What does the underlined word "perceived" in paragraph 1 mean?A. Kept.B. Found.C. Hunted.D. Destroyed.33. What does paragraph 2 mainly want to tell us?A. The development of industrial whaling.B. The cause of blue whales' disappearance.C. The wide spread of blue whales in the past.D. The skills of catching blue whales easily.34. What did the researchers find through their surveys in South Georgia?A. There is an increasing return of blue whales.B. Blue whales are in a more dangerous situation.C. More and more people like watching blue whales.D. South Georgia is a good place to watch blue whales.35. What might be discussed in the following paragraph?A. The risk of killing whales at higher rates.B. The sign of Antarctic blue whales' return.C. The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints. The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn’t even noticed her. Jenny sighed and got back to washing dishes. On the day of the grand opening, Jenny’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Jenny was happy as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family. At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Jenny’s age. As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny lowered her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.Jenny’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers.”“Mom, I don’t want to be out there. There are kids from school!”“So?” her mother asked. “That’s good! And through it, I learn to appreciate the beauty lying in everyday life. This week, I was busy with my preparations for the final exams. To achieve ideal grades, I not only made a practical review plan but also followed it without any delay. Besides, I got much encouragement from both my teachers and parents, which helped me build confidence to face the challenges. Last but not least, my best friend phoned me to arrange a winter holiday trip together. All these beautiful moments make me feel delighted to move for the day ahead.67.The following Monday, Steve arrived at school earlier than usual because Miss White would give a quiz on the weekend homework. When the class bell rang, Miss White handed out the test papers. At first, Steve was so nervous that his throat was dry, and his palms were sweating. But when he saw the smile on her face, his heart was full of courage again. Steve began to focus ondoing it. Time went by quickly, and it was time to hand in the test papers. To Miss White’s surprise, Steve was the first to hand in his paper. After Miss White checked Steve’s test paper, she was in total shock! She found Steve finished all the questions and passed the test for the first time. She couldn’t wait to share the good news with Steve. When seeing the score on his paper, Steve couldn’t believe his eyes. He was wild with joy, tears of delight rolling down his cheeks. From that moment, nothing was the same for Steve. His grades got better and better and he was gradually willing to play with his classmates. It was Miss White’s care that made him confident in himself. Text1:W: I think we should go to the theater.M: But we all like different kinds of films.
AToo many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest, be generous(宽宏大量的),be understanding.Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.Sooner or later, everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So, to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are exactly alike(相像).But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.01.Some friendships don’t last long because______.A. there are too many people who want to make friends.B. those who give others friendship receive friendship from others.C. some people receive friendship but don’t give friendship back.D. they don’t know friendship is something serious.02.According to the passage, honesty is______.A. something countableB. the base of friendshipC. as important as moneyD. more important than anything else03.The best title of this passage is______.A. How to Be a FriendB. Honesty Is the Best PolicyC. A Friend in Need Is a Friend IndeedD. Three Important Points in LifeEvery year, hundreds of hopeful students arrive in Washington, D. C., in order to compete in the National Spelling Bee, which has been held every year since 1925.In the competition, students under 16 take turns trying to properly spell words. The champion is the only remaining student who does not make a mistake. American students are familiar with the competition because it is practiced in many schools throughout the country. The National Spelling Bee, however, is a much bigger setting and showcases only the best spellers from all parts of the nation. Winning the competition nowadays requires the ability to perform under much pressure against so many talented students in front of a large audience. A student who wins the event in the twenty-first century will experience a much different challenge than the first winner, Frank Neuhauser, did in 1925 when he defeated(打败)only nine other competitors.Clearly, the 90 years of the National Spelling Bee’s existence proves the importance of spelling in the English language. However, struggles with spelling English words go back much more than 90 years. The charming thing about spelling correctly in English is that it is in many ways without rules. English language can absorb new words from other languages and in doing so make them “English” words. Because of this, the number of words in English is much higher than any other languages. Thus, spelling in many other languages has fewer words and fewer strange exceptions to rules. It turns out that a spelling bee in most other languages would be a waste of time. Why is that? Well, without so many exceptions(例外)to common vocabulary, there would be very few words that everyone didn’t already know.04.How is today’s competition different from the first National Spelling Bee?A. It produces more winners.B. It draws more talented audience.C. It attracts more competitors.D. It tests more strange words.05.Why does the author mention “other languages” in Paragraph 3?A. To introduce the new rules of the competition.B. To gather students from other countries.C. To explain the difficulty in English spelling.D. To show the strict rules of written English.06.What’s the author’s attitude toward holding spelling competitions in most other languages?A. Uncaring.B. Supportive.C. Responsible.D. Doubtful.07.What does the text mainly talk about?A. Ways to win a Spelling Bee.B. The most difficult language.C. The best spellers.D. A competition about spelling. When I met and married a Japanese man in New York, I thought he would learn a bit more English and we would continue to live our lives there. But in life’s twists and turns, we ended up living in Tokyo! I was the one who needed to learn Japanese and fast! There is no experience quite as lonely as living in a foreign country without a grasp of the language. Especially to make friends and to break that loneliness, it is the first and foremost goal to attain...always an uphill climb, while totally awkward!I was a trained English Language teacher, and while I lived abroad, I did that work, and when we moved back to America, I planned to continue it. The country’s financial difficulties at the time, however, saw deep cuts to the English as a second language in schools and to refugee language programs. So I simply took a job in a department store, at its Child Playroom. But this store was located near a major company that hired some of its workforce from many other countries. Often a preschooler in my playroom could not speak a word of English, and would look so lost and lonely! My heart flew to them! We interacted with each other a lot. We would play English language games and they would teach their language to me.Years later, when a small girl who had come from South America could speak good English, she said to me, “Teacher, remember when I called you Maestra?” Another child whose language was only Russian originally-we built a robot from blocks and fed it block food and learned English words that way-would come years afterwards and continue to play that same game! These moments became my life compass, due north is that place where when persons are different, Love Matters!08.What was the author’s challenge after marriage?A. She had to give up her job.B. She lost all her best friends.C. She needed to learn a new language.D. She was forced to live overseas.09.Why did the author change her job after she returned home?A. She set up her own company.B. She lost interest in teaching.C. Better teachers were needed.D. Teaching jobs were greatly reduced.10.What would the author and the young children do in the playroom?A. They learned each other’s languages.B. They took language tests.C. They cared for each other.D. They encouraged each other in learning.11.Which word can best describe the author’s interactions with children?A. Tiring.B. Helpful.C. Simple.D. Humorous.Local bamboo plantations in Europe have ensured that giant pandas in Belgium and the United Kingdom have been fed with enough fresh bamboo during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to zookeepers.Every week, there are about 1,000 kilograms of fresh bamboo delivered from a French bamboo plantation called La Bambouseraie to the Belgian zoo of Pairi Daiza where two giant pandas plus their three babies live.Mathieu Goedefroy, spokesman of the zoo, said “It is very important for us to be assured that we always and at every time are able to provide fresh bamboo of the highest quality for our dear pandas. That’s why we decide to buy this growing house.”Since 1856, when a botanist Eugene Mazel began his first plantings by making species from all the world used to the plantation, La Bamhouseraie has developed into a park growing more than 240 varieties of bamboo now.Of the 1,000 kilograms of bamboo delivered to the zoo each week, only a small part is eaten by the pandas. The other animals can consume the rest of it so that none is wasted. The story is similar in the U.K.’s Edinburgh Zoo, where the fresh bamboo has been shipped from the Netherlands. Jo Elliot, the animal collection manager at the zoo, said, “We have made sure that our stores have enough supplies. The pandas need their bamboo. Most of it gets shipped in from the Netherlands, and at the moment that is fine. We are still getting deliveries.”In early May, Canada’s Calgary Zoo said it would have to send back two giant pandas to China, since fewer flights, as a result of COVID-19, were causing a lack of bamboo for the pandas. An adult giant panda eats about 35 kilograms of bamboo shoots, or kilograms of fresh bamboo and bamboo leaves daily. There was no locally grown bamboo in Calgary, so supplies of bamboo had relied on the shipments from China.“We have also contacted our workmates from Calgary, Canada,” Goedefroy said. “We’ll see if we could be of any help for them with our bamboo supplies.”12.Where does Pairi Daiza get bamboo for their pandas?A. From a zoo in China.B. From a French plantation.C. From a zoo in Belgium.D. From a plantation in the Netherlands.13.What is the similarity between the Edinburgh Zoo and Pairi Daiza?A. They make full use of the bamboo.B. They have to return pandas to China.C. They have enough bamboo supplies.D. They got bamboo from the same place.14.What can be inferred about Calgary Zoo from the last two paragraphs?A. It could grow some bamboo soon.B. Pairi Daiza may send bamboo to it.C. It will give less bamboo to pandas.D. There will be no more pandas living in it.15.What is the best title for the text?A. COVID-19 Harmed Pandas’ HealthB. COVID-19 Brought Chances to ZoosC. European Plantations Grew Bamboo WellD.
