Lake poets
Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey were known as Lake Poets because they lived and knew one another in the last few years of the 18th century in the district of the great lakes in Northwestern England. The former two published The Lyrical Ballads together in 1798, while all three of them had radical inclinations in their youth but later turned conservative and received pensions and poet laureateships from the aristocracy.

Background Knowledge
Wordsworth’ s famous poem about daffodils was composed in 1804, two years after he saw the flowers walking by Ullswater on a stormy day with Dorothy. His inspiration for the poem came from an account written by Dorothy. In her journal entry for 15th April 1802 she describes how the daffodils: tossed and reeled and danced, and seemed as if they verily laughed with the wind, that blew upon them over the lake; Wordsworth published his poem, 'I wandered lonely as a Cloud' , in 1807. He later altered it, and his second version, published in 1815, is the one widely known today.

Mother died when he was eight and Father died when he was 13 Separated from his sister, Dorothy, in 1778 and did not see her again until 1787 Visited France in 1790 In 1795 the Wordsworth stayed in a cottage in Dorset, where they met Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. In the years ahead a close relationship developed between William, Dorothy and Coleridge. poet laureate

Introduction
“I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” is a poem about nature. With his pure and poetic language, Wordsworth brings us into a beautiful world where there are daffodils, trees and breeze. We follow the poet at every turn of his feelings. • William Wordsworth was the first to find words for the most elementary sensations of man face to face with natural phenomena. • His deep love for nature runs through short lyrics such as “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”
But as he catches sight of daffodils stretching as far as the eyes can see and finds himself in the midst of nature, his loneliness turns into relaxation and joy. Thus the shift of the poet’s mood from sadness to happiness manifests （表明） the theme --- the great influence of nature upon human being.

Title
The choose of the word “lonely” in “I wandered lonely as a cloud” instead of other words like carefree（无忧无虑的）, leisure or jolly convey to us the poet’s depression and disconsolateness（忧郁，沮丧） at the very beginning.
