13、It was the worst day of my professional life. My publisher shut down, and we had no idea if another publisher would t ake over my novel. In addition, my second novel hadn’t sold as well as the first one. It seemed that I was watching my career going downwards. It was so terrifying.
However, as I shared my fears with my mother, she said something I would never forget: “I would love you if you were a garbage man.” She wasn’t looking down upon garbage men. She was just saying that whatever my job was, she loved me. It was just her honest feeling at that moment, but those simple words are still the ones I use to fight so many of my fears today.
To this day, when I sit down to write every day, I say those words to myself, “I’d love you if you were a garbage man.” I can still feel the selflessness of my mother’s love.
A few years ago, my mother passed away because of breast cancer. It was she who set me on the path of writing a series of children’s books to give strength to my own children. The first two are I’m Amelia Earhart and I’m Abraham Lincoln. In six months, we’ll publish I’m Rosa Parks. For me, this isn’t just a book series. It’s my dream for my own daughter, for my sons, and for all of us who need to see the power and potential (潜力) in each of us.
This series was born also because I was tired of my daughter thinking that reality TV stars were heroes. I tell my kids all the time: That’s fame (名气). Fame is different from being a hero. I wanted my kids to see real heroes who are no different than themselves. For this reason, each book tells the story of the hero when he/she was a kid. We see them as children. So it’s not just Amelia Earhart and Abraham Lincoln being famous; it’s them being just like us.
Look around. We live in a world that desires heroes. Our solution is what my mother taught me with her words: the power of an ordinary person. I can proudly repeat my moth er’s words to my kids. They’ll understand how I love them. 1.The author felt terrified because .

B.his mother passed away because of breast cancer
C.he had no idea how to sell his second novel

3.What does “themselves” in the fifth paragraph refer to?
A.Real heroes. B.Children’s books. C.The author’s kids. D.Reality TV stars.

C.be ordinary people D.realize their own potential

14、With only fish and birds for company, Eric Erden has been rowing across the Pacific Ocean to Australia in his
23-foot-long boat since he left California on July 10, 2009.
But crossing the Pacific is only part of his incredible journey. Eric has decided to go all the way around the world using only his own energy. He will row, bike, and walk without help from any motors at all. Oh, and his plan includes climbing the tallest peak on six of the continents along the way, to honour the memory of a fellow climber.
He says he is doing this to show kids that they can achieve any goal, but he hopes to have some great adventures along the way.
As a solo traveller, Eric has already faced disappointments and challenges. Because he has to row about ten hours a day, he brought along an MP3 player to listen to music and pass the time. Unfortunately, the nearly daily tropical rain for several months has forced him to keep his player packed away where it's safe and dry.
Storms and huge wave wind regularly force him in the wrong direction and even threaten to overturn his boat. “Sometimes I really feel scared,” says a somewhat embarrassed Eric. “But that’s all part of the journey. I knew this wouldn’t be easy when I started. That's why I gave myself two years to finish.”
Protein bars(蛋白棒)give him energy, and he boils water to heat freeze-dried meals on a one-burner stove. A
solar-powered machine removes salt from ocean water so he can drink it, but only when the sun shines. When that fails he sometimes tries to collect rainwater in buckets.
H e’s not bothered by any of the hardships. Eric sees the world as a laboratory where there is much to learn. And when his trip around the world takes him across land, he enjoys meeting people - especially children. He has already visited several schools and shared his story.
1.Why is Eric making this trip?

15、One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane (车道) when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. a big accident, turned his head and started yelling(吼叫) at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital. ”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck (垃圾车法则) . ” He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at wor k, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods (情绪). Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don’t.

16、“What is success”? Mr. Black asked his 6th grade business class. It was his opening conversation for the first class of the term.
“Success is riding in a sweet car, watching an 80-inch((英寸) TV, and living in a place with at least twelve rooms.” One student answered, earning(博得)laughs from all the students.
Mr. Black smiled, but shook his head. “Tom, that is excess(过量). That is not success.”
“How about being able to provide for your family?” A blonde girl named Sandy in the front suggested as an answer.“Now we’re getting closer,” Mr. Black smiled, “but try thinking about what you need and what you want.”

Everyone had to be on a team, and everyone had to help do something. My team was in charge of special effects. Gary
came up with a great idea. He got two big, old fishing nets which were once used by his father when he went fishing on the sea. Gary, Jemma, and I used ropes to tie the nets to the ceiling of the dining hall, and it looked really great. Then we cut out fish shapes from colored paper and stuckthemon the nets.
Everyone seemed to go to the party in one of three costumes: some kind of fish, a mermaid, or Neptune —the “King of the Sea”.
The dining hall looked great. Jemma’s father had put up colored lights for us. We were feeling proud of our work when the disaster happened. The nets fell down. We were all caught in the fish nets. We were laughing so hard that we couldn’t stand up. We truly felt as if we were “under the sea”. This wasn’t the effect we imagined, but it was special!

It may be hard to believe, but the American Revolution(革命)—the war that freed the American states from British control—began over a cup of tea. Tea was not the only thing that caused the war, of course, but it played a very big part. The British people’s love of tea is well-known. When the British won control over mush of North America in the early 1700s, they brought their tea- drinking habits with them. Tea quickly became the continents most popular drink. As tea could not be grown locally, just as in Britain, it was shipped into the country—mostly from India.
In the early 1700s, the Britain government made a special deal with the East India Company, as an English trading company. They agreed that no other company was allowed to bring tea to Britain or any country controlled by Britain, including America. It was a great deal for the East India Company, since it meant that the company could decide whatever price it wanted for its products. Anditalways decided on a high price!
In North America, the local people did not like having to pay such high prices. Instead of overpaying for tea from the British, they turned to Dutch traders, who secretly brought tea to the country that was just as good—and much less expensive. Al though this broke the law, the American people didn’t care. They got the same cup of tea at a much lower price.
The East India Company, however, didn’t like this at all. By the 1760s, they were losing millions of pounds each year to Dutch traders—a huge amount of money in a time when £60 a year was considered a good income. Instead of reducing their prices to compete with the Dutch, the company asked the British government for help and the government agreed. In 1767, the British introduced new law that increased the prices of all goods which were brought into America. These laws helped make the East India Company even richer and forced local people to pay much more for everything. The American leaders asked the British government not to do so, but the British refused to listen. These unfair laws increased Americans’ anger about British rule and the rest, as they say, is history.
