2.(6分)Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents' house was in north London, but during the Second World War Oxford was considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven Stephen went to St Albans School, and then on to University College, Oxford, his father's old college. Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. It was first held by Isaac Barrow, and then in 1663 by Isaac Newton.

3.(8分)Experts are warning about the dangers of "fussy eating" after a 17-year-old living on a diet of chips(炸薯条) suffered sight loss. Since leaving primary school, the teen had been eating only chips and white bread,as well as occasional meat.
The teenager, who cannot be named, saw a doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he was diagnosed(诊断) with vitamin B12 deficiency(缺乏) and took supplements, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.
Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss. Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, "He used to live on crisps, and not really any fruit or vegetables." Dr Atan and her workmates rechecked the young man’s vitamin levels and found he was low in B12 as well as some other important vitamins. He was not overweight or underweight, but was badly malnourished(营养不良的). In terms of his sight loss, he met the standard for being considered blind. "He had blind spots right in the middle of his vision," said Dr Atan. "That means he can’t drive and would find it really difficult to read or watch TV." Nutritional optic neuropathy(视神经病变)--the condition the young man has-- is treatable if diagnosed early. Left too long, however, the damage becomes permanent(永久的).
Dr Atan said cases like this are thankfully uncommon, but that parents should be aware of the possible harm that can be caused by picky eating, and ask for help from experts. And they may offer some practical advice.
1. What does the underlined word "fussy" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. strict.
B. different.
C. picky.
D. common.
2. What can we learn about this teenager when he was 14?
A.He took his illness lightly.
B. He was sporty and energetic.
C. He gave up the unhealthy diet.
D. He refused to have a health check.
3.What did Dr Atan find after rechecking this teenager’s body?
A. He would get well soon.
B. He went blind after living on chips.
C. He had corrected his vitamin B12 deficiency.
D. He was underweight because of a lack of nutrients.
4.. What will the author write in the following paragraphs?
A. The teen’s life after being treated.
B. The shocking findings about eyesight.
C. Some tips from experts on healthy eating.
D. Other cases of blindness caused by unhealthy habits.
4.(6分)Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ on these hot summer days? Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many alternatives that manage to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those who are eager to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely innovative approach. They designed a special textile(纺织物)that can absorb body heat and re-emit(重发出)its energy into space as mid-infrared
radiation (MIR). This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known as radiative cooling(辐射冷却), Science reveals. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular
shirt, you are actually wearing a device that works like a mirror.
Research conducted at Stanford University in 2017 had already managed to cool the wearer by 3℃, but this previous trial was limited. So researchers still need to test the new approach to determine how effectively the new fabric cools while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky, like in their trials. They also need to examine and measure how well it works when T-shirts are not in close contact with the skin.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming are now looking out for textile manufacturers(制造商)and clothing brands that are interested in using their fabric. They estimate that the new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. “We can make it with mass production, which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old stuff,” Yaoguang said.
So if you are an athlete or simply someone that has to deal with the extremely high temperatures, be patient because your days of feeling hot and bothered may be coming to an end!
1. What is the purpose of the new invention?
A. To warm up people’s body.
B. To cool people off in hot weather.
C. To detect the wearers’ temperature.
D. To protect clothes from becoming wet.
2. How does the special product work?
A. By turning sunlight into energy.
B. By sending out absorbed heat.
C. By keeping heat out completely.
D. By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
3. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The invention needs further testing.
B. The previous studies lack evidence.
C. The new fabric has a good cooling effect.
D. The new fabric applies to various situations.
三、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)
5.(10分)Successful people are very often early risers. Take Churchill, Obama and Darwin for example. Whatever their motivations, 1 they all obtained the benefits of putting their feet on the floor before the rooster opened its beak.
But why is rising early such a common character? Why do they drag their tired bodies to start the day early when the rest of us are still dreaming? More time
If you were to get up just one hour earlier each morning you would gain
15days in a year. 2 I don't know about you, but I have too much I want to achieve to waste my life in this way. We only need six to seven hours a night. Any more is wasting life.
Get Active
The morning is a great time to exercise. 3 Some mornings when I come back from my new habit of running, I feel energetic. Exercising in the morning will make you more productive and contribute to making you more successful.
One Step Ahead
The early risers are one step ahead of the crowd: calm and unhurriedness when everyone else is rushing to the office. 4 When you wake up early, you have more time for planning, thinking, and getting organized. You will find you waste less time from being disorganized or making bad decisions. The added benefit of getting to the office first means fewer distractions from colleagues and getting done what you planned to get done.
So if you haven't already created the habit of early rising, start tomorrow. 5 It may take a couple of days to adjust and you may not feel the benefit straight away, but stick with it Millions of super people can't all be wrong.
