Subject: Hello!
Hi, Liam!
So you're my new pen friend. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I'm 14 years old and I live in
Calgary, Canada. I have two older brothers, Brian and Sam. I'm the only girl.
I love sports and I'm always looking for exciting new hobbies to try. I like playing baseball in winter.
It's fun beating the boys! But summer is my favourite time of the year. I love skateboarding and
rock climbing in summer.
Skateboarding's great because it's so fun and easy to learn! I often skateboard after school. There
are many places in the park where I can do stunts. I'm good at stunts like jumping and turning the
skateboard!
Rock climbing is also really fun. I usually climb with my dad on weekends. We can't do it on real
mountains very often because we live in the city. We do indoor rock climbing instead but it's not as
challenging.
So that's me! How about you? Please write back soon!
Bye for now!

14、Living abroad to study can certainly be an interesting experience but is that alone a good enough reason for spending years far away from home? To make the experience truly valuable, there has to be a purpose behind the decision to study abroad. This may be a wish to perfect language skills in a foreign language environment, or a clever move in your career development. You must also consider the costs, not just of living and studying abroad, but of applying (申请). Most universities now require international students to pay for application.
If you are sure that you want to apply to study abroad after considering these points, your next step is to choose the right programme of studies. Research your choices and choose carefully. You must do your homework well. Most universities have information online but you can also email and ask them to send you more details. Y ou can find a lot of information on school ranking from education websites. But read carefully. Different universities emphasize different strengths (强调不同的强项). Don’t just think about the university’s reputation (名声); look for the most suitable for
your purposes.
Next, you must deal with a large pile of paperwork. This includes filling in application form, preparing your school records, and getting recommendation letters. Reading the instructions and requirements of the universities carefully is of great importance. Sadly, many fine applicants (申请者) get kicked out in the first round, simply because they don’t follow the application procedure (程序) properly.
Money is another important consideration. Some scholarships are provided by governments, others by schools and colleges. This information, again, can be found on the Internet. If you find a scholarship that is suitable for you, follow the application procedure carefully; the earlier you apply, the better your chance of getting it.
1.According to the article, studying abroad is truly valuable because ______.
A.it is an interesting experience B.all your friends are doing so
C.it is a good chance to develop your career D.it is fun to travel around the world
2.A school ranking list tells you ______.
A.how much the courses cost B.the names of all the professors
C.how good the school is compared to others D.where the school is located
3.What are the three things to do when you are applying to study in a university abroad?
A.Study hard, read the instructions and requirements, and buy an airplane ticket.
B.Prepare recommendation letters, prepare school records, and fill in the application form.

D.Write a recommendation letter, do paperwork, and study hard.

A sweater label may tell you to wash by washing in cold water. The label on a coat may say "dry clean only". Washing may ruin (损坏) this coat. If you do as the directions say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best.
Many clothes today must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed. You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. 16、“In my day, we had to walk a mile to school—uphill, both ways.” That may sound like an old joke. Today, only 13 percent of kids walk to school, down from 66 percent 30 years ago.
Studies show that fewer children are walking and biking to school, and more children are at risk of becoming overweight. Changing behaviors of children and parents require creative ways that are safe and fun.
A walking school bus can be both.
It works like a bus, picking up ‘passengers’ along the way at designated(指定的) ‘bus stops’ except everyone is walking! The Walking School Bus works as asupervisedgroup of children walking to and from school along a safe and enjoyable set route. There are at least two parents in a group. One parent ‘drives’ at the front of the bus, while the other parent supervises at the back. The same of different supervisors go with the children to and from school. Additional(增加的) parents may be needed depending on the walking environment.
The ‘bus’ can go as often as parents want to ‘drive’ it and chil dren want to use it. This means that it can even work as little as one morning or afternoon each week. All children are welcome to join the bus even if their parents cannot be drivers. And the service is free.
Socially, it’s great because the children meet other children, otherwise they would only know by sight.
“My children have formed some good friendships because of the Walking Bus. The parents get to know other parents too!” a parent said. “From our experience of the Walking Bus, it has only been a mean ingful thing. It gets all of us
walking more and the children do not complain about walking like they used to. ”
Some kids said compared to walking school bus, it’s boring in a car when they were asked why not get into a car. Besides these, it might have a good effect on heavy traffic.
1.How many students walked to school 30 years ago?
A.66 percent. B.13 percent. C.30 percent. D.53 percent.
2.What does the underlined word “supervised” mean in the passage?
A.controlled B.explored C.required D.improved
3.What can the Walking School Bus NOT do to help the children __________.
A.make more friends B.reduce the risk of being overweight
C.exercise more D.complain about walking
4.The best title of this passage is “__________”.
A.A new way to exercise B.A new school bus
C.A walking school bus D.Parents’ driving school bus
