1. Background Information
Globalization
The process by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, can foster a standardization of cultural expressions around the world. An extreme interpretation of this process, often referred to as globalism, sees advanced capitalism, boosted by wireless and Internet communications and electronic business transactions, destroying local traditions and regional distinctions, creating in their place a homogenized world culture. According to this view, human experience everywhere is in jeopardy of becoming essentially the same. This appears, however, to be an overstatement of the phenomenon. Though homogenizing influences do indeed exist, people are far from creating a single overarching world culture. Tribalism
Originally it refers to behavior and attitudes that are based on strong loyalty to a tribe. Scholars believe that modern regionalism, racism, and nationalism are merely refined forms of primitive tribalism.
2. Questions and answers:
1). What are the differences between a miseducated man and an uneducated man?
2). In your opinion, what kind of education can be called a miseducation?
Step 3: Intensive Study
------ Detailed Discussion of the Text
1. This larger unity was the most important central fact of our time—something on which people could build at a time when hope seemed misty, almost unreal. (para.4)
something on which people could build: something people could use as a basis for further development.
at a time when hope seemed misty, almost unreal: at a time when hope seemed to be unclear, not very bright, and almost non-existent.
2. Let me put it differently, … (para.5)
Let me say it in a d ifferent way. “Put” here means to say or to express.
More examples:
Let me put it in another way.
Can you put it in a simple English?
To put it mildly, modesty is not one of his strong points.
3. When you got through comparing notes, you discovered that you were both talking about the same neighborhood, i.e. , this planet, and the conditions that made it pleasant or hostile to human life. (para.5)
get through doing:to complete; to finish doing
compare notes:to exchange views or information about sth. Both have done or are interested in to see if they agree
i.e. : (Latin) that is
conditions hostile to human life:conditions which make it difficult for people to live
4. …the mark of a rounded man… (para.6)
This refers to the mark of a well-educated person, that is, a person well developed intellectually, morally as well as physically. Here, however, the emphasis is on the broad-mindedness of the educated.
5. Only a few years ago an education indifferences of references fulfilled a specific if limited need. (para.6)
if limited: even though the need is limited. Here “if” means “in spite of being; although”.
He’s a good-natured man, if a little impatient.
Many, if not most, college students have part-time jobs.
6. Then overnight came the great compression. (para.7)
Notice the sentence is in inverted order. It means that all of a sudden the world had become a “global village”.
7. However friendly the universe may be, it has left the conditions of human existence precariously balanced. (para.10)
“However + adj. / adv.” is used here to introduce an adverbial clause of concession.
8. Remove any one of these and the unity of human needs is attacked and the human race with it. (para.10)
the unity of human needs: the delicate balance or interdependence of human needs 9. Leadership on this higher level does not require mountains of gold or thundering propaganda. (para.11)
The author here is not talking about economic, political, or military leadership. He is talking about moral or spiritual leadership, thus “leadership of a higher level”.
Step 4: Text Analysis
------ Main idea of the text?
In this text, the author’s central idea is that to prepare ourselves for this new world, we must all be re-educated so that we will be able to understand that there are more similarities than differences among peoples. The differences are superficial and insignificant whereas the similarities are essential and fundamental. These similarities enable all of us to be equal members in this global village and to live happily with mutual respect. Therefore, we should respect for all humanity; we should understand human needs are in the unity; we should concern the human situation itself as well.
------ Devices for developing it?
Part I (para.1-4) An open confession: what “I” hav e learned pays too much attention to the differences in this world, instead, in today’s world similarities are essential and fundamental.
Part I (para.5-7) The reason why similarities should be emphasized in today’s world. Part III (para.8-11) A new education which will give people a global perspective is needed. ( respect for humanity; the unity of human needs; concerns of the human situation itself.)
Step 5: Writing skills
Repetition for emphasis
Repetition is a technique frequently used by writers and speakers for emphasis. In paragraph 3,4 and 9 of the text, not only the structure but the key words are repeated while in paragraph 10 only the structure of “how to do sth.” is repeated.
Step 6: writing
Do you agree that tribalism is standing in our way to progress today? How about
neo-imperialism or world hegemony in the name of globalization?
